Break mail into "chunks" for importing into Entourage?

Hello,
I currently have a mail.app account that is around 10GB in size. Mail.app is giving our studio far too much trouble (especially when upgrading from 1.0 to 2.0) and we're switching to Entourage. The problem I'm having right now is that Entourage limits its mail database to 4GB, thus I can't import my mail.app account. Is there a way to break up my mail.app account into more manageable (3GB) chucks for importing into Entourage?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Kristin.

OPEN LETTER TO THE MAIL 2.0 CODING TEAM. RSVP.
with thanks to DAVID GIMENO GOST, for answering so many people's posts about all the mail 2.0 bugs.
hi guys,
i love all things apple, and i have done for twenty years.
but with respect, your build of mail 2.0 really could be a lot better.
moving my mail from 1.0 on an ibook g3 running os X 10.3.9, over to mail 2.0 on an intel macbook 1.83 running os X 10.4.7 has been a nightmare.
the discussion boards of many mac sites feature countless cases of people making the move from 1.0 to 2.0, with all their e-mails disappearing.
having spent two weeks reading the knowledge forums, and learning about emailchemy, plus all the complications which, even with that third party program, still exist in moving one's mail over from version 1.0 over to 2.0, are both massive and horrendous.
and that's for me, who has twenty years of finding my way around mac bugs.
but this one is the most difficult i've ever seen, as well as being one of the most widespread problems in a FULL VERSION RELEASE of an apple program, which apple has done nothing to resolve during the six months in which this problem has been widespread in the mac community worldwide.
so thank god for DAVID GIMENO GOST !
i'm amazed that apple still hasn't come up with a patch for moving mail from 1.0 to 2.0.
even now, while i've finally got all my mail back today, 95% is showing as unread, due to the last obstacles in the process, which i can no longer face solving.
i've also lost hundreds of red mail flags during the transfer :o(.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, guys:
we shouldn't need to be buying third party software to move our e-mails from apple mail 1.0 up to apple mail 2.0, and even then be faced by massive hurdles to overcome, which take weeks for someone who at least has SOME idea of what he's doing.
i pity all the people who read the numerous forum posts about how difficult it is to transfer their mail from 1.0 to 2.0, and simply give up on the spot, and have to start their e-mail history TODAY, unable to access their previous e-mail again - potentially now for ever.
because the ironic joke is that we can't even have an access copy of mail 1.0 on our macs to read our old e-mails, unless we hack that program out of the 10.3 cd installation set, which the gurus on your own web site recommend us NOT to do !
so what are we supposed to do, to access our old e-mail, which we can't open, even though YES, it is in our mail folder, and YES, we did full rebuilds of every mail folder, and YES, we trashed our mail preferences first.
e-mail is now at the very center of the average mac user's digital life.
a user's most important program should not require countless hours scrolling through the astonishing number of problems within mail 2.0, which the apple.com discussion boards evidence, with new problems being added every day.
please sort this out, and build a patch, for the sanity of the many people who love apple, but who are unable to access any of their old e-mails.
because i wouldn't wish the last fortnight on anyone else.
RSVP, APPLE.
with best wishes to everyone on the infinity loop,

ps: if you're a mac user who has been affected by the mail 2.0 disappearing bug, please post a reply to this message, and send me an e-mail to: [email protected], so that we can draw apple's increasing attention to it. thanks.

  • Mail 2 crashes while importing from Entourage X

    Hello all:
I am trying to move over from Entourage X to Mail/Address Book/iCal under Tiger. However, when I try to run the import from Entourage feature in Mail, I am unable to import my mail files from Entourage.
Specifically, the problem I'm having is that Mail crashes mid-way through the import process. When I restart Mail, it attempts to re-start the import process but crashes again. If I hit "Cancel" I can see part of my folder structure under the "Import" folder, but no mail messages in it.
One possibility is that my Mail database in Entourage is very large, with thousands of mail messages and a fairly complicated folder structure. Based on the progress bar, I estimate a total import would take about an hour or so. The crash appears to happen 10-15 minutes into the import process.
Does anyone have any suggestions how I might be able to get around this? I would very much like to switch over to Mail - I assume that it is a better application than Entourage.
    Thanks,
    Sohil

Let’s fix the second problem first. Step 4 in the procedure below will cause Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again. Hence, before proceeding, you my want to delete from the server any messages you don’t want to be downloaded again.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • How do I get Mail notifications only for important replies?

Is there a way to set up the notifications from Mail to only pop up for important replies? I know that I can change the mailbox which goes through to the notification center, but how do you make that mailbox? I can't figure out the smart mailbox rules for this. I don't want to get notifications from all mail, just replies to specific messages of my choosing. I don't care that some web store is having a sale, I can check that later. I do want to know that my coworker replied to that message I really needed an answer to right away. So how do I limit it? It can't rely on things like importance flags, since there's no guarantee that the responder will keep the flag. Any ideas?

I will clarify. I would like to select emails that are either:
Replies to recently sent mail. This isn't perfect, since some messages are not important, so I don't need to know right away that there's a reply.
    or
Replies to specific messages that I would mark as important within Mail.app, somehow. I don't specifically want to mark the messages with an !important flag, since that would impose on the recipient, and there's no way to guarantee that they will reply with the !important flag intact.
I suppose that I might use Contacts groups and add the "currently important" people to a specific group, then select the messages from people in that group, but that is not exactly optimal, since I'd have to maintain that group manually.

  • Is it possible to successfully import large Entourage databases into Mail?

    Hi:
Perusing lots of threads, it looks like Mail has some issues importing large Entourage databases; my Entourage Identity is about 6 GB.
The most current of the threads I saw was a few months old. Does anyone know if Apple has recently found a way to import these large files successfully, preserving the subfolder hierarchy and getting all of the messages transferred?
The other alternative for me is just to start with Mail fresh and run Entourage in a parallel fashion for half a year or so, until I no longer regularly need to use Entourage, but I'd prefer the more elegant approach.
    Thank you!

Char did the suggested solution work? I suspect not - but if it did please confirm. I've also been trying to import large business use mail databases from entourage 2004 & 2008 into Mail without much luck. In one case it took 12 separate imports because each would fail after successfully importing a few folders. After each fail I needed to logout the user and login again in order for Mail to "find" the entourage mail file again. As a final step I had to reassemble, from the import folders, the previous file structure by drag and drop. Complete pain and the result is questionable no matter how carefully I do this. Without a good import solution we will have to stick with entourage 2008 or upgrade to the new version of Outlook 2011. Disappointing performance from apple Mail on this.

  • Can't import from Entourage into Mail

I'm trying to import my Entourage 2008 email into Apple Mail 6.0.  Everytime I try I get an error message, "Error - Unable to connect to Microsoft Entourage.  Try opening Microsoft Entourage first, then run the import".  I tried that and it didn't work either.  I exported my Entourage data as a .rge but then when I try to import it, there is a nested duplication of all the folders from Entourage. And I've got too many emails/folders to drag them.  Any ideas or suggestions?

This is too late for Norm, but incase anyone else is having this problem, it may be due to having Office 2011 installed (ignore if this is not your case).
I would find the same error on trying to import from Entourage, and after digging around a bit, tracked the problem to having Office 2011 installed. Once I completely removed Office 2011, the import worked fine.

  • Can't import all Entourage emails into Mail

    Hello all,
So I decided to finally switch over to Leopard. I thought about doing an archive/install or delete/install, but then figured I would first just try the upgrade to see how it went (especially because I have tons of software that the disks are back in America [I live in China] and could not reinstall them if I had to, etc)...
I did a full cloneable back-up with Super-Duper, then upgraded, and everything seemed OK. I decided to switch over to Mail.app (I used to use it like 2 years ago, then had wanted to try Entourage, but lately the simplicity of Mail.app beckoned again).
So I started to import my mail from Entourage. Everything went in pretty much fine, except for the SENT folder. It would import, and then when I looked, it was all Sent mail but only up to Oct 18,2008. I then deleted that "Import/Sent" mailbox in Mail.app, then tried to Import again, just checking the "Sent Mail" box when it asks you "which items do you want to import from Entourage", etc...
But still, it would import a huge sent-mail folder, but lacking emails from Oct 18-Dec 10 2008.
Any thoughts on why? Any suggestions on how to just get those SPECIFIC emails from Entourage and put them directly into Mail.app? It's over a month of Sent mails, which i actually need for my work (to check what I sent to which client, etc)...
    Thanks- Samantha

If this was archived from Mac OS X Mail, then choose "Mail for Mac OS X", not "mbox files".

  • How can I import Outlook for Mac mail into Lion Mail?

How can I import mail from Outlook for Mac into Lion Mail?

It is not Outlook that needs to be sync'd; it is the Exchange Server.  Find out from the System Administrator of the Exchange Server the EXTERNAL name and use that to setup a new mail account in Lion Mail.  I highlight the "external" because the URL used for Window's Outlook Clients will not work.  Try the webmail URL first.

  • How to import PST file into Entourage 2004 ?

    Hello all,
I wonder if somebody can help. I just recently threw my Windows PC out and replaced it by an iMac - I just love it !
One thing still challenges me though. I got all the old contacts and emails in a PST file format, Outlook 2003.
Can anybody tell me how I convert/import them into Entourage 2004 ?
Thanks very much for your help in advance
    Lenochka

The best way is through an exchange server. If you don't have access to one, then there are two more options from the site mentioned above (http://www.entourage.mvps.org/cross_platform/#pst):
"Other options to convert your Outlook mail into the MBOX format.
Use Mozilla Mail. See Dave Riches tutorial here
Use Paul Berkowitz's Export-Import Scripts download here"

  • Getting M$ Outlook 2002 into M$ Office for Mac 2008 Entourage

Need to move all email, contacts, and calendar from M$ Windows platform from M$ Outlook to Mac Snow Leopard platform under M$ Office for Mac 2008 Entourage.
    BACKGROUND
OK, I've made this far. I bought my first MacPro in Aug 2008 and my MacBook Pro in Oct 2008 running both on Windows XP Pro under "BootCamp" and slowly playing on the other side with OSX Leopard. In Jun 2009 I bought a new MacBook Pro and running a subordinate Windows XP Pro under Parallels .. BUT .. for the most part have been doing more and more with Snow Leopard and FCP but have yet to move my mail, contacts, and calendar to the new machine while still running Outlook Express for email and Outlook for contacts and calendar respectively. Now it's time to make the final move to Mac but for now I shall go with....
    PLAN & CURRENT STATUS
M$ Office for Mac 2008 and want to run under Mac Snow Leopard. I've installed the software but need to get my material converted over to the new machine. BTW, I would love to try Mail and iCal but this is my move for now and at least it's a Mac app with some of my M$ Windows familiarity to it as Mac up scales iCal or it's replacement and then I'll go there when the time comes but for now this is a major move for me and I'm proud of myself for getting this far so quickly.
Step 1. I have imported all contacts, emails, and calendar from Outlook Express into M$ Outlook 2002 on the old MacBook Pro in Windows and am ready to move everything to the other MacBook Pro (new unibody one Jun 2009) and need the next step(s) from anyone who can help.
    Step 2. ???
Thanks in advance for any who can help in this matter. I want to make the transition quickly so I can sell off last years model MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Core 2 Due 250 with 4Gb RAM.

    Try O2M from littlemachines.com

  • Importing pst files into entourage

I am using Entourage to interface with our Microsoft exchange server and its working fine.
However I have all my old Outlook 2004 emails stored as pst files which i used to access offline via Outlook before i bought a Mac
Is there any way i can import these "old" emails into Entourage to give me the same functionality?

PST to Entourage conversion is one of those disgraceful "gaps" that demonstrates Microsofts unwillingness to engage with customers.
There is no built-in mechanism. There are, however, some work-around methods:
    1. Export Data from Outlook to Mozilla Mail (or ThunderBird). Then import into Entourage:
    http://www.riches.com.au/articles/export-outlook-entourage.htm
    2. Do the same, but use Outlook Express as the conduit: http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/user/view/cs_msg/9928
    3. Buy a third-party solution: http://www.littlemachines.com/ Make sure you check for a refunds policy in case it does not work!
    4. Microsofts solution: Convert the PST to Outlook 2001 (Mac Classic) format. Then use a PST Import Tool to get the data into Entourage. Requires you to have a PPC Mac running Classic..... (http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/08/importingfrom_outlook_forwin.html).

  • Import iCal into Entourage

I have been using iCal for some time, and have numerous Calendars I wish to "import" into Entourage. I have tried synching with .mac but no joy. I seem unable to "copy" the calendars over. Is there a easy way of doing this?

    Justin,
Searching Apple Discussions with: import iCal into Entourage provides some possible helpful replies.

  • Import Address Book into Entourage

I posted a question before about a problem with Mail and Exchange/Outlook. In doing some additional research it appears I can solve my problem by using Entourage.
Now I have to try and export the addresses in the Apple Address Book into Entourage. It appears Apple Address Book will not export in a comma delimited format and Entourage will not import vCards.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David

    David,
This was posted in MacFixIt and it works perfectly:
    Entourage addresses into Address Book:
    1. Create a new desktop folder. Name it anything you want, but v-card would be appropriate, because that's what you will be creating.
    2. Open Entourage's Addresses and select the ones that you want to bring over.
    3. Drag these addresses into the v-card folder.
    4. Drag the v-card folder into the Name field of Apple's Address Book. You can safely trash the folder after you are finished.
    Apple addresses to Entourage:
    1. In Apple's Address Book, select the addresses that you want to export to Entourage.
    2. Open Entourage Address Book and drag those addresses into Entourage Address Book. If you are exporting multiple addresses, hold Option while you do this, otherwise only the topmost address will be exported and you'll have to do it one-by-one.
These methods are not perfect. You may find some minor errors, such as a Home email coming across as Work, but otherwise you'll get everything.

  • Importing Outlook Contacts into Entourage

The Apple store imported my Outlook into Entourage, but my 2300 Contacts are missing thr Categories. What can be done?

iTunes on the PC can load contacts directly into iPhone.
Or you can export vcards, copy to Mac, load into "Address Book", then sync into iPhone with Mac iTunes. Outlook only has an option to export vcards 1-at-a-time. There are several 3rd party programs for the PC that can export all-at-once.

No. HDV will always make a break at the start/stop points on the tape using FCE.
It's a consequence of the Mpeg file layout.
