Breaking news - Aperture 3.01 just released!

Says' Improves stability and addresses number of issues....upgrading, memory etc etc
Sounds good! When it works Aperture 3 is a great upgrade. Let's hope this solves the many problems that had various 'workarounds' - so more people can enjoy using it!

There's a sticky at the top of the page and a good half a dozen threads on the subject already...

  • I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build.  The same call works fine when running on the device

I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build. The same call works fine when running on the device (iPhone) using debug build. When running with a release build, the result handler is never called (nor is the fault handler called). Viewing the BlazeDS logs in debug mode, the call is received and send back with data. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be a data size issue.
I have targeted one specific data call that returns in the String value a string length of 44kb, which fails in the release build (result or fault handler never called), but the result handler is called as expected in debug build. When I do not populate the String value (in server side Java code) on the object (just set it empty string), the result handler is then called, and the object is returned (release build).
The custom object being returned in the call is a very a simple object, with getters/setters for simple types boolean, int, String, and one org.23c.dom.Document type. This same object type is used on other other RemoteObject calls (different data) and works fine (release and debug builds). I originally was returning as a Document, but, just to make sure this wasn't the problem, changed the value to be returned to a String, just to rule out XML/Dom issues in serialization.
I don't understand 1) why the release build vs. debug build behavior is different for a RemoteObject call, 2) why the calls work in debug build when sending over a somewhat large (but, not unreasonable) amount of data in a String object, but not in release build.
I have't tried to find out exactly where the failure point in size is, but, not sure that's even relevant, since 44kb isn't an unreasonable size to expect.
By turning on the Debug mode in BlazeDS, I can see the object and it's attributes being serialized and everything looks good there. The calls are received and processed appropriately in BlazeDS for both debug and release build testing.
Anyone have an idea on other things to try to debug/resolve this?
Platform testing is BlazeDS 4, Flashbuilder 4.7, Websphere 8 server, iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). Tried using multiple Flex SDK's 4.12 to the latest 4.13, with no change in behavior.
    Thanks!

After a week's worth of debugging, I found the issue.
The Java type returned from the call was defined as ArrayList.  Changing it to List resolved the problem.
I'm not sure why ArrayList isn't a valid return type, I've been looking at the Adobe docs, and still can't see why this isn't valid.  And, why it works in Debug mode and not in Release build is even stranger.  Maybe someone can shed some light on the logic here to me.

  • Can I get rid of Exchange with the new Server just released?

Hi, I saw the new 8 core machine and all the programs. I also recieved an email from Apple telling me about all the calendaring it has.
I want to get rid of Exchange. I have Outlook on 99.9% the clients, however, and they're not going to get rid of Windows or Office any time soon. Will the new server just released and the server software do Exchange server calendaring, scheduling, etc. just like (or better) than Exchange does?
    Thanks.

iCalServer uses the new standard CalDAV protocol for calendaring. Exchange uses MS's own proprietary protocols - we do not have those implemented in iCalServer. As a result your existing Outlook users can't use iCalServer right now.
The good news is that there is at least one group working on a plugin for Outlook that will enable access to iCalServer. Whilst this is still alpha quality right now progress is being made, and hopefully in the near future thee will be something usable. See <http://openconnector.org>.

    Hi there!
Yes, same problem too; I've already sent an email to apple support and just received a very vague and unpractical response with "call apple support in your country" as main advice. I've obviously emailed back stating that I need a clearer response and I don not have any intention to spend money calling for support when updates is a free tool. I do also believe this is a probem generated on Apple's end, I just wish they learned to say "sorry, it's us;  working on it!"

  • What do you think of the new creative cloud cc that was just released?

What do you think of the new creative cloud cc that was just released? I'm using it now and I think it's great. It's cs6 on stereroids lol More new features that people who fully paid for cs6 should of had.
I do wish the cloud standard price changes to 29.99 a month for all users so everyone gets a chance to enjoy the cloud.

I just downloaded CC, and still have all my CS6 apps as backup. Bridge CC (64-bit) is showing the same unacceptable performance I had with CS6 version. Can't believe that Adobe is so inept. I did fix the CS6 version but I forget how I did it.  CS6 version of Bridge is near instantaneous. And it's not a matter of building the cache. It takes the program forever just to respond to a simple mouse click in the menu bar.
Photoshop CC crashed my machine, whereas CS6 version runs perfectly. Afraid to download any further apps.
Adobe 11 failed to install because it think's prior version of the that program is still on the computer. I never installed Acrobat 11 on this machine. Just Acrobat 10, which also got the stupid 30-day "refuse to start" bug, so I'm using Acrobat 9.5 which works flawlessly.  Funny how the newer the code from Adobe, the worse it gets for its customers.
I'm using Win 7 Pro, 16GB mem, Nvidia 2800M video card on Thinkpad with i7-920XM chip.

The fingerprint scanner will be a function of new hardware.

  • Help with purchasing new Mac Book Pro- 2014 release vs. 2013?

OK, so my 15" 2008 Mac Book Pro is on its last gasp--didn't help when I dropped it while open (I can now see into its innards though it's still working...sort of).
I'm not a technophile (mainly use my laptop for writing--my profession--and eBay business) so my sister told me to make sure that I had at least 8 GB and a fast processing speed. Retina display not necessary (her graphic artists friends hate it apparently) so that would lower the price; however it seems that there are two releases: Oct 2013 and July 2014.  Read up on the latest release but not sure how much is necessary for to have...or care about.
Can you all weigh in and tell me (a) how important it is to have "the latest and greatest" and (b) how necessary is Retina display and (c) which would YOU purchase if you had my budget constraints.  Thanks!
Anyway, I've narrowed down my choices of MacBook Pro purchases to what was within my budget: $1300 including tax.  I wanted a 15" but it was too much $$$$, plus I can just use an external monitor.
Both are available at Apple. Both come with 1 year and 3-year extended warranties and both have the standard software installed, including Pages.
One more thing....Wondering if having Flash Storage is important?  Only refurbished one (see below) has it.
Prices for both end up being almost the same--around $1250 out the door, including tax.
OPTION #1  NEW LAPTOP. July 2014 Release   NON RETINA DISPLAY
2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    4GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB - NOTE: I WOULD HAVE THIS UPGRADED TO 8 MG
    500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
    Accessory Kit
OPTION #2   REFURBISHED  -Oct. 14 Release - RETINA DISPLAY
13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch
    8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    256GB Flash Storage1
    720p FaceTime HD camera
    Intel Iris Graphics

Hmm... I'm not really sure where you found a July 2014 release without a retina display. I think it might be the old version because that laptop was last updated in 2012 (to my understanding. Also, your sister is kind of wrong, if you want a computer that will work well for everyday things, 4gb of ram is just fine. I have a three year old MacBook Air with 4gb of ram and do things in Photoshop, Illustrator, Pixelmator, FCP, etc. all the time running OS X Yosemite and it runs like brand new. However, if you want to future proof it, you might want 8gb so it can always run the latest OSes.
Flash Storage is amazingly fast compared to a Hard Drive. It also has no moving parts, therefore is much more durable, and much more likely to survive a drop than a Hard Drive (which would seem to be useful in your situation).
Also, I don't know why your sister's friends would hate the Retina display. Many people love it because it gives them the ability to edit pixel by pixel with perfect accuracy.
I would go for the Retina display. It has better specs for the same price so why not? Not to mention that it's much faster and will likely receive updates much longer than the new MacBook Pro without Retina display.
    I hope I helped.

  • How do I create a new Aperture library from pictures I moved from IMAC?

I moved my Photos to External Hard drive from MAC . Can I create new aperture library in EHD?

As I wrote as long as both programs are latest versions they share the same library structure and can open each others libraries.
Open Aperture and then select File->Switch to Library. If the iPhoto library shows up in the list select it. If it does not select Other/New… If the iphoto library shows up in this list select it if not select Other Library and find, select and open the iPhoto library.
At this point there are a few things you can do depending on your situation. You can just leave the library as is if you do most of your work in iPhoto. Or you can turn the this library into an Aperture library.
To make it an Aperture library open Aperture and create a new empty library as you did before. Now go to File->Import->Library and select the iPhoto library. The iPhoto library will be imported and converted to an Aperture library.
While all of thsi is safe you the iPhoto library it is alwasy a good idea to have a bakup of the library before starting just in case.

  • Sneak Preview ABAP Edition just released

The Sneak Preview: ABAP Edition is now available. Kathy just announced it in the forum: Sneak Preview Update: ABAP Edition just released!!
The link to the Sneak Preview stays the same: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/uuid/cfc19866-0401-0010-35b2-dc8158247fb6
Basically this is a "slim" or "mini" ABAP installation with a compressed database component, comparable to the "slim" Java version. It's supposed to run with a minimum of 1GB but 2GB RAM is recommended.
Feedback on this edition, like the others, should go in the SDN Code Sample/Download forum (Software Downloads).
    Cheers,
    Marilyn

It would be really awesome to see the community weigh in on their experiences with this installation.
I'm going to suggest that we find a way to reward participants for doing a good job of sharing and documenting their experiences with the installation.
One idea would be to give a "double point" allocation.
That means that good content contribution (articles, blogs, detailed forum posts in a separate marked thread) that articulates the substance of what a downloader does in the course of the new ABAP Sneak Preview installation: tips and tricks, installation guide details, observations and detailed opinions,  will be <u>doubly rewarded</u>.
Hey, this is a very time consuming activity, as I am experiencing myself at present.
    Thoughts?

  • PhotoKit Sharpener 2.0 just released-System requirements?

As hard as I looked, I could not find on the PixelGenius site either the "What's New" or the "System Requirements" for the just released PhotoKit Sharpener 2.0.  (The PDF User Guide won't download.)
    • Has anything other than 64-bit functionality been added in terms of features or new algorithms?
    • Is this new version Tiger/PPC compatible?  (CS4)

Found that my CS5 in 64 bit mode does not provide access to change dimensions in the output sharpener module of Contone and Inkjet. However in 32 bit mode this is ok. Here is a screendump of the plug-in running in the 64 bit CS5.
This is a feature, not a bug...as we said in the manual (I think it's in there) you need to have your units set to Inches or CMs (unit dimensions) NOT pixels in order to resize. In Contone and Inkjet, we allow resizing WITHOUT resampling because we feel it's important to maintain the native pixel dimensions of the image.
So, if you change the size (assuming a unit other than pixels) the resolution will change to maintain the original pixel count (same as doing a resize in Image Size with resample off).
For Halftone, we DO allow BOTH resizing AND resampling because when you prepare an image for halftone repro, you DON'T want to send TOO many pixels at the line screen. So we suggest resizing and downsampling to get you images in the 1.5-2.5 (max at 2.5) PPI to LPI ratio. We really do suggest 2X as the optimal.
For Web and Multimedia, we allow resampling but since the web and screen display is designed for 1 image pixel for 1 screen pixel (assuming "72 pixels" but in reality it's whatever the display really is).
We just realized today that we didn't explain the Halftone Output Sharpening correctly in the manual...sorry about that. We're actually planning on putting up some sample workflows on the web site and preparing images for halftone output will be one of them!

  • Can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture, can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture

can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture, can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture.
Does anyone out there no if you can merge the libraries?  I have two hard drives full of photos saved in the Aperture 2.1.1 library, I have never needed to upgrade.  I bought a Mac desktop and purchased the new aperture.  When I plug the hard drive in and try to use the other ones from the earlier version, the computer says files are incomplatible..
    Can anyone help?

When AP 3.0 was released, Apple added a new rendering engine and the local adjustment brushes. Upgrading at that time required that the library be upgraded also to use the new features. Users had the option of upgrading the library database (and internal support files) only, or to opt for updating all images to allow use of the local adjustment features (brushes) on those images.
There have been additional updates that required the library to be updated also (AP 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 if memory serves). There may have been a couple of additional ones, but those 3.x updates added key features.
I suspect you may need to update your current library to AP 2.1.4 > make a copy for backup > upgrade library to AP 3. You may be able to upgrade directly from 2.1.4 to 3.4.1, but I am not sure since I went from 2.1.4 to 3.0.
If you have OS X 10.8.2 on the new machine, I am not sure if AP 2.1.4 can be run (hopefully others can answer that one). Merging and exporting projects as a library were one of the features in AP 3, so you must have a library at that level to do that type of procedure.
Here is a link to the update features and you will see some recommendations at the bottom for upgrading the libraries for use with AP 3.

If i buy a macbook pro 2 months before the new operating system comes is released, can i get it for free?

Generally once Apple gives the official release date, then Macs have become available for up to date pricing.  As long as just the season has been stated, there is no guarantee that Macs purchased during the season in question will get up to date pricing.  So watch http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ the day that the release date is announced.   Past performance is no guarantee of future returns.  Thankfully since 10.7's release Apple's full fledged releases have only been $20 USD, and updates are free to the full fledged release.  I.e. 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 are updates to 10.7.
10.8.1 to 10.8.4 are updates to 10.8.  It was only with 10.6 and earlier the distribution for each full release was at least $99 and up to date were around $20 going back to 10.2.  10.6 is though available on the Apple Store for only $20.

I agree..I'm not going to get ahead of myself and plan out what I want to buy before anything is really gone into detail. But I do say if it's just for the Apple online store (not iTunes store) then that Apple protection plan for the iPhone that I haven't got yet looks pretty nice. But if it's for iTunes as well then I'm getting $100 worth of 24 season 6, ringtones, and songs.
