Breaking words

Very Serious Issue With Indesign
Hi,
I noticed there is a serious issue with indesign, the words are breaking across two lines, i have attached the indesign file and snapshot of page no 4, highlighted the text where its breaking.
I am using Indesign CS6, Scripting is in Hindi Language.
This script works perfectly in pagemaker, with the same font, but with Indesign its causing very serious Issue

I think maybe the problem is the font itself, which looks like it is not really Unicode compliant. The character where the break is occurring is mapped to the underline Low Line, or underscore character, which would explain a lot.
InDesign's formatting, line breaking, and word breaking algorithms all assume the font is properly encoded. If that is not the case, you get a situation where, say, the hyphen character is "drawn" as an "A". This works as long as you type "-" where you want an "A" but as soon as InDesign needs to break a word, you'd see it unexpectedly break "on" the A. (And other hyphenated words suddenly end with an A.)
The very best thing to do is ditch this font. It's a dead end; no current or newer software will be able to work with it. Joel is one of the strongest advocates for that (I come running right behind him).
The solution is to import your text, then use Find/Change for every single character code to the proper one. All of them! (It helps if you can find a predefined mapping for your font. It even helps more if you know how to write scripts )

  • pre div style="word-wrap:break-word" long text /div /pre doesn't force wrap

    <pre><div style="word-wrap:break-word">long text</div></pre> works in IE9 but not FireFox 31. Actual returns do wrap text but the text of long paragraphs extends outside the <div>, despite the word-wrap:break-word style. Maybe I'm expecting too much interpretation from <pre>? But I am thinking if IE can handle this, perhaps FireFox could too?

  • RH7 doesn't break Word document into topics based on headings

    Hi,
    Have been working with RH7 and Word 2007 for some time and everything was OK.
    Yesterday tried to generate another Help by importing a Word document.
    RH just didn't generate topics based on the headings.
    The entire document was imported into a single topic - into a text box.
    Any idea what the problem could be?
    Thanks,
    Rakefet

    Sometimes the environment can mysteriously change so pagination was the place to start!
    The next thing to check is the headings in the specific document Word. I've seen quite a few posts where further investigation reveals that the "headings" were in fact styles the author had created that were not the heading styles that come with Word. Is this possible here, is it one of your documents or someone else's creation?
    Try creating a new project and importing a document that has imported correctly in the past. Does it still do so or does it too display this problem?

  • Firefox lets table overflow instead of breaking words at soft hyphens

    On http://www.idea.int/vt/country_view.cfm?id=2 , the table overflows into the right column because of long table headings. I inserted soft hyphens into them to help the browsers break the headings when needed. This seems to work in IE 8 and Google Chrome but not in Firefox.

    Yeah, same thing on my end. It seems like it's a difference of attitude in terms of implementing the standards. You should file a bug at [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org bugzilla] and let the devs know about this. See if it hasn't been file already. Remember that bugzilla is for bug work, not discussions or complaints.

  • Why does anchoring break word wrap?

    I have a 200+ page typical book--one big column per page (two facing pages), and about 30 images/illustrations scattered throughout the book (at most one image per page). Most of the images are, say, half the column wide, and I want the text to flow around them. So I place the image in a reasonable spot and select Word Wrap | Wrap Around Bounding Box. Looks great so far. Then I anchor it--and the first line of text flows UNDER the image frame. Release the anchor and it word wraps correctly. When it's anchored I've tried both Wrap Around Bounding Box and Wrap Around Object, and various other word wrap options--the first line of text still wraps under the image frame. But all is well once I release the anchor. I'm a newbie--what am I missing?

    It seems to not-work-as-expected if I place the anchor in text that is being word wrapped--that is, anywhere horizontal to the image. If I place the anchor in text above the image, that isn't being wrapped, it appears to work as expected. Sadly, this would suggest that if I want to place an image next to the paragraph that references it, and place the anchor inside the paragraph that references the image, that word wrapping won't work.

  • Non breaking word or phrase

    I have some long URLs, and I want to keep the whole url together so that it doesn't break from one line to the next. Is that possible?

    You can try
    Format > Document > Text Options
    Allow Line Breaks After:
    [ / - \= \m ]
    and remove the characters at which breaks occur, probably including "/".
    [ Apply ]

  • Pages breaks words using "Justify text" on certain accented characters

    I'm working on a document in Hungarian, and it seems that when I use the "justified text" setting, this puts extra white space around certain accented characters.
    Please see these screenshots:
    http://www.kkovacs.hu/~kkovacs/Pages-bug-with-accented-words.jpg
    In this case, "időszak" should be a single word, and it is, when I write it as "Idõszak" (using õ instead of ő, but this is not the character that is needed there). The problem seems independent of the font that I use (Big Caslon, in the example above).
    Is there a way to work around this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kristóf

    Hello
    My old eyes fooled me.
    I saw a "lowercase o with a tilde" when it was a "lowercase o with double acute"
    With your font which is a bit more recent than mine, the missing glyph is grabbed from an other font (I didn't search which one it is).
    I didn't got what was in your original screenshot.
    I just get a character with a fully different drawing.
    It's funny because it's the kind of problem RC-R and me where exchanging about in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1644259&tstart=0
    Given what I get, I will not call that a bug but a feature that many users (most of them ?) are unaware of.
    The operating system does its best to display the character we are asking for even if it is not built in the used font.
    This trickery has PROs and CONs.
    For your use, I'm afraid that CONs are the most important and that you will have to search for a font embedding the needed characters.
    To scan the contents of a font, I uses the free Linotype FontExplorer which displays the defined glyphs in black and the missing ones in red so, it's easy to see if a font fit our needs.

  • Read Only TextAreas with Carriage Return, Line Breaks and Word Wrapping

    Hi all,
    I know there are a few posts around this subject but I cannot find the answer to the exact problem I have.
    I have a page that has a 'TextArea with Character Counter' (4000 Chars) that is conditionally read only based on the users credentials (using the 'Read Only' attributes of the TextArea item).
    When the field is editable (not Read Only) everything works fine but when I make the field Read Only I start to have problems:
    The first problem is that the Carriage Return and Line Breaks are ignored and the text becomes one continuos block. I have managed to fix this by adding pre and post element text of pre and /pre tags. This has made the Carriage Return and Line Breaks word nicely and dispaly correctly.
    However, it has introduced a second problem. Long lines, with no Carriage Returns or Line Breaks, now extend to the far right of the page with no word wrapping, making my page potentially 4000+ characters wide.
    How can I get the field to be display only, with recognised Carriage Returns and Line Breaks, and Word Wrapping inside a fixed width of, say, 150 characters?
    Many thanks,
    Martin

    Hi,
    Just a cut and paste of yours with the field name changed:
    htp.p('<script>');
    htp.p('$x("P3_COMMENTS").readonly=true;');
    htp.p('</script>');I also have the following in the page HTML Header, could they be conflicting?
    <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript">
    function setReleaseToProd(wpTypeCode){
       //setReleaseToProd($v(this))
      var get = new htmldb_Get(null,$v('pFlowId'),'APPLICATION_PROCESS=set_release_to_prod',0);
      get.addParam('x01',wpTypeCode);
      gReturn = get.get();
      if(gReturn) {
         $s('P3_RELEASE_TO_PROD',gReturn);
      get = null;
    </script>I am a long way from knowing much about Javascript (this page code was written by someone else) so all help is much appreciated.

  • Word Attachments

    After a somewhat recent conversion to using Mail.app, some of my recipients are having trouble reading Word documents in their receiving email programs. I am using Mail 2.1.3 (753.1/753).
    I sent several emails with single attachments to my wife who is using Netscape Mail on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.4.11. She can successfully read Excel, PowerPoint, pdf and jpg attachments. When sending Word attachments (whose names include .doc), she is unable to read them. I do not have Send Windows Friendly attachments selected. The Word attachments are visible and can be saved to disk. The files are known to be Word documents by the OS (via Get Info). When either Word is opened first and the file is selected, or the file is double clicked, a window appears asking to "Convert File" from some unknown format. My wife indicates that she has no trouble reading Word documents received from other senders (not necessarily Macs, most likely PCs).
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I did not see any useful ideas in recent threads.

    Thanks again for your attention to my problem.
    Here is the attachment header - it is identical on the sending and receiving machines. For some reason, it is in 2 pieces.

  • Non-breaking space in Adobe Muse

    Is it possible to insert non-breaking space in Adobe Muse?

    Hi,
    There is no direct way or Muse-specific keyboard shortcut to insert a non-breaking space.
    On Mac, I was able to insert it using Unicode Hex Input keyboard layout (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_input#Hexadecimal_code_input). Non-breaking space is 00A0. I would expect the corresponding Windows method to work too.
    That said, Muse exports a setting (word-wrap: break-word) that allows word breaks at normally 'unbreakable' positions. I haven't tested it, but I have a feeling non-breaking spaces will be defeated by this setting. May I ask what your use case is?
    Thanks,
    Abhishek

  • Adding template break box model and font

    I have been working on this one for a few hours now and I can't figure it out. I am working with the HTML5 Boilerplate and recreating the home page for our company. When I do not include the template, the file works fine in IE. But the second I apply a template the whole page becomes broken and the IE box model applies and my font sizing gets messed up.
    I have included a link to the files on a testing server, if this is not allowed, let me know and I can put up the code.
    Excuse the cupcakes from FlexSlider, I have not yet finished that piece.
    Working (no template): http://www.qa.mpay.com/index.asp
    Not working (template): http://www.qa.mpay.com/copy.asp
    Do I just need to rework my entire code so that it is more compliant with the IE Box Model qualifications, ie. div inside of a div with width on one and padding/margin on the other?

    Alright here's the code for the one that's not working. After posting last night, I realized the links were probably only viewable internally.
    UPDATE: Just added <html> after <!doctype html> like I've seen you post about in another forum discussion. That seems to have fixed it. Why is that needed? Isn't it the html tag being opened in the line <html class="no-js" lang="en"> What I mean by this, is why does it work fine in other browsers when that is missing, but it messes up with IE?
    P.S. I'm starting to blame H5BP for poor documentation, but I'm learning a lot in the process.

  • Hyphenating words at the right margin of a sentence

    How do I stop iBooks Author from automatically breaking words that do not fit at the right margin of a line of text into a hyphenated word with the left part at the end of one line and the right part moved to the front of the next line?
    Many words are awkwardly broken up, such as "ges-ture", etc.  Is there a global setting to stop all automatic hyphenations (while keeping the ones I had originally set in my manuscript)?
    Thanks for any guidance.

    Hello reidjenner,
    This can be adjusted in the Document Inspector, as detailed below.
    Turn hyphenation on or off
    By default, words are automatically hyphenated if they need to break at the end of a line.
    Do any of the following:
    Turn hyphenation on or off for the entire document: Open the Document inspector, and select or deselect Hyphenate (in the Document pane).
    iBooks Author: Correct and hyphenate text automatically
