Bricked my WRT350N :(

Ok,
in short right now I need TFTP program and instructions how to use it to restore firmware. It would also be nice to get 2.0.017 firmware for WRT350N V2.1
Here is some back story:
so I was trying to get my WRT350N and WUSB300N work together with slim results. Wide channel 8 and center channel 6 was the only time I got it working some way. The WUSB adapter reported to have strog link to WRT350N (100%) and reported to be using 300Mbps connection. But when I tried moving some files only 10% of the 300Mbps network was utilized very other channel configuration either lock the wireless network completely... Well enough about that...
Then I saw that WRT350N has a firmware update so I decided to go ahead and try it. Well actually the firmware update was for V2.0 and my WRT350N say V2.1 in the back, but since the support doesn't have anyother optionsto choose from than V1.0 and V2.0 I decided to go with the V2.0. My old firmware was 2.0.0.17 and the new one is 2.0.0.19.
I unplugged everything else, but my computer from the router. Then I reset the router to factory defaults and after reboot I went ahead to upgrade the firmware. The firmware started upgrading with a red bar that didn't move far and then it changed screen with a violet or was it a blue bar and where it said something like upgrading and the bar went all the way to 100%, but after that nothing happen. I waited for 10 minutes and then tried to open another connection to the router but it refused. Then I tried to ping the router, but it didn't answer.. I unplugged the router and then plugged it back on, but it still refuses to give me an IP address and if I set static ip and ping it it refuses to answer. All the leds are indicating that everything should be fine. Then I go ahead and read the troubleshoot instructions from the manual to see if I can force upgrade the firmware. Well the manual says I should use TFTP (a program that is supposed to come in the upgrade package, but it doesn't). I can't find it anywhere from this site either... I can find a TFTP client from elsewhere, but have no idea how to use it to restore the firmware as there is no instructions for as those didn't come with the upgrade package either.

Look toward the bottom of this URL for info about tftp.exe.

  • WRT350N v2.1 bricked after firmware upgrade - what to do now?

    Hi,
I bought the European version of WRT350N v.2.1 (S/N Q10H401385). The router was very unstable (it was repeatedly hanging after few laptops were connected), so I decided to flash newer firmware. Unfortunately, I did not check that the firmware version 2.0.19 wich I found on the Liksys site is for v.2.0 - and after flashing it over 2.0.17 the device is completely dead. It does not answer for  pings. I tried to reset it with the 30-30-30 method. No luck either. I noticed only that if I keep the reset button during a few seconds and then release it when the router is powered on, the power diode begins to blink in yellow.
The device is only a few months old. Please advice, what can I do now? Can be the router repaired somehow, and does the warranty applies in such an instance?
Many thanks in advanr  for any hint or reply.
    Best,
    Dianthus

Hi, yes you did exactly the same. Unfortunately, I couldn not find any solution, besides quite advanced technically - the router must be disassembled, some special cables attached and the system recovered at the very basic level.
I decided to return it to my vendor - I desribed the problem and waited 2 weeks for an answer. The router has been not returned, and I have got the cash back.
Perhaps it is the best option also for you.
Btw. I have got enough money to buy DLINK 655 and now I am totally happy with it. This Linksys we speak about was certailny not a good device, and I found many complaints in the net on it.
Unfortunately, in my case the lock-ups hve had worse consequences than just some troubles at home - I have used it as the wifi device during a meeting, and the connections was just very bad. But at that time, I could'nt know that the device is faulty, and it seems that all the line of these routers are broken somehow.
    Good luck,
    Dianthus

  • WRT54GS v7 and WRT350N not recognized files

Hello, i have both routers and as wish to update their firmware tried to download it but pops up a window with "file si not in a recognizable format" Pls, need help.

I am too afraid to experiment on my router to give you the correct installation tool.
IF you were using THE ROUTER'S web based firmware upgrade tool (http://192.168.1.1/Upgrade.asp) , my guess is that the *.bin file will NOT work.
You need a tftp.exe utility tool (do a wiki on Trivial File Transfer Protocol or TFTP).
Do an ONLINE chat with Linksys and ask them to provide you a link to the proper utility tool for the WRT350N.  I THINK the utility tools are specific to the model.  As I understand it, the tool installs a temporary firmware in the router, enabling the router to then upload the new firmware version.  If all goes right, you will flash the router and the new firmware will appear.  If all goes WRONG, you will have nothing that works!!
Be aware that, if the the firmware flash fails, you WILL lose your connectivity -- my guess is that will be permanent, too -- as I've just learned, your router will be "bricked".  The v1.03.2 firmware is crap, so you probably have to take the chance to upgrade.  I did it and had to work with Linksys to replace my router because the firmware flash bricked my router.  It will take at least two weeks to return and get another router, so I dragged an old one out of my closet of junk (or you could go directly to the modem, I guess).
HOWEVER,  the good news is that the v1.03.7 firmware works reasonably well and 1000% better than the older versions.
    Good luck and good sailing.

  • WRT350N and a Sony SMP-N100 media player

My network consists of the WRT350N with wired ethernet to mainframe PC, two wireless laptops, and a Sony Network Media Player(SMP-N100) which is also wireless and connected to a TV. I can access internet services like Netflix and it's working fine, but I bought it mainly to stream media files from my mainframe PC, through the WRT350N, to the Sony Network Media Player. The mainframe PC and the laptops share these same files easily. The oldest hardware is the WRT350N and all OS's are WinXP, WRT350N firmware is 1.03.7. Everything I've found so far hints at DLNA incompatibility....please, someone, say it ain't so. The WRT350N hasn't let me down..... 'till now.

    Thank you for responding.
I am able to ping the media player so there is communication to and from pc thru the router.
I made all the changes you suggested and still nothing.
But, in the process of doing all this I made my way to windows media player and its media sharing settings.
I did, after allot of trial and error, get the media player to appear in a window that indicates media share devices.
Soooo many settings, no wonder windows is such a monster....it doesn't want to play with the other kids(lol).
I am able to, now, access the pc from the media player, but, the only format I've been able to display on the tv is .jpeg's.
I have all kinds of pictures(jpg's, gif's, png's) and all kinds of video's(wmv's, avi's, mpeg's) and none of it is protected or illegal copies..
Basically every file format supported by the media player, at least according to their manual.
Do I have to use windows media player to share media from the PC? Is it their stupid DRM aspect thats preventing me from ACCESSING DEVICES I OWN?
Sorry, I didn't mean to yell, I get so frustrated when I hit the various brick walls' in windows.

  • WRT350N Losing connection with web browser after running Bittorrent client

    My Setup:
HP Pavillion Dual Core Desktop PC 2GB Memory
    Windows Vista Premium Home
Linksys Wireless WUSB G Adapter for my destop
Time Warrner Cable Modem - Webstar Model
I have had a WRT54G for a long time, and it has been flawless, I decided to buy a Refurbed by Linksys WRT350N because I anticipate getting a new device and devices that will use the Draft N Standard.  Anyhow, I have it set to narrowband to use ONLY Wireless G, have it set up as i Did with my G Router to use WEP with Broadcast SSID ETC ETC, opened up all the same ports forwarded on it and made all same settings as in my WRT54G.
    Here is the problem:
I typically use a Bittorrent client to download large files to my computer, specifically UTorrent.    With my WRT54G I would get good speeds but even after a couple of hours I would still be able to start my Browser, IE or Firefox 3 and get, albeit slow, but still get my webpages to render.
Now when UTorrent runs for a couple of hours with my WRT350N I load my web browser and I get a message that says "Cannot connect" or connection is timing out.  Sometimes it will load the page but looks more text like than HTML, and I attribute that to packet loss?
Anyhow I did use Linksys Tech Support, and they suggested I changed my MTU to a lower setting instead of Auto which I did and it didnt make a difference, welL i shouldnt say that I do get forecastfox to load on FIrefox where it didnt load before and sometimes I get the non html version of the pages to load.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am patient and LOVE a project and I have a feeling this is going to be one.

Actually that is what I was doing last night and got a bad flash and bricked my router..so its on its way back to Linksys...

  • WRT350N Locking Up

I bought one of the Linksys certified refurbished WRT350Ns as an upgrade to my v6 WRT54G. I probably should of been satisfied with my 54G as that is running solid as a rock now. Anyway, the 350N arrived to me DOA. It was bricked with just a flashing power light. So I'm like OK, I'll just return it. Spent an hour on Tech Support to get nowhere, and then called again and got a support ticket number. I quickly proceeded to get an RMA number. I packed up the router and sent it November 15th, they got it at their warehouse on the 19th.
I have not heard a response from them until just today when I got my RMA returned. I came home and opened the box, only to be greeted by the same router I sent in. I was thinking maybe it's fine, they completely fixed it, and boy was I wrong.
The router now boots, but Locks up every time I modify the configuration, it also locks up after about a minute of being powered on. This happens on both Official Linksys firmware and DD-WRT. I upgraded from Official to DD-WRT and did a 30-30-30 reset on all three flashes to get to eko's TNG MEGA 11296, and this still happens. My question is: Does anyone have any idea what's going on with the router and if there's anyway to fix it that is not too intensive and does not involve getting another RMA?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As per your concern i think you have update the Firmware on Linksys Router with DD-WRT Firmware, Its better you update it with the latest Firmware from linksys. and Follow this Steps.

Please report if you're having a problem after saving the BASIC SETUP Tab.
I could'nt go to any other settings/tabs right after I saved the Basic Setup.
These are the steps I always do before and after upgrading the router's firmware:
    1. Hard reset
    2. Upgrade
    3. Hard reset
I'm using Vista Ultimate. Tried to re-flash a couple more times but either I'm getting gibberish characters when I'm clicking any of the tabs after saving the Basic Setup Tab or I get the "Page cannot be displayed" error.
I had to reflash to the previous version v1.03.2 to get the router working (?) again...

I brought up the ipconfig /all and it shows this:

I have tried the WRT350N_1_03_2_US_upgrade_utility.exe software using the 192.168.1.1 / admin and it replies as "Unable to get responses from the server"! It then does nothing.
    Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop program.
I then tried using the 169.254.145.82 and it got to the "Verify the information below. etc etc etc". Click on Upgrade and then nothing happens.
    Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop program.
I just brought up the Upgrade executable so that I could copy the messages and it defaulted to 139.142.40.129. I clicked on "Upgrade" and still get the "Unable to get responses from the server" It then does nothing.
    Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop program.
    Any suggestions?
The reset button still does not appear to do anything and the power light blinks continuously but at a different frequency than the Ethernet light.
Do I now have an expensive brick?
BTW: I installed a switch between the modem and the router so that I can at least get access to this forum to read and post. I have been switching the cable back and forth for testing.

  • For Users of WRT350N - My experience

For all you WRT350N Users out there, I thought I'd post my experience and tips gained over the past 7-8 months using the WRT350N since my WRT54G died.
I purchased the WRT350N obviously as a replacement for the WRT54G with extremely high expectations. Though I did not have any -N equipment as yet, I was planning on it. I did like the fact that it had the USB port. It was also a Linksys product so I expected the same good, reliable experience with it as I had in the past. I was upgrading some of my home office equipment and wanted to embrace wireless for all my peripherals (ie. get rid of the wires).
In the beginning, it was hell.
I suffered from all kinds of bizarre and cryptic events. The WRT350N was at 1.03.2. I had all manners of dropped internet connections, extremely poor wireless performance (WEP and B/G Mode). You've read the threads, I've experienced them all. I almost threw the unit out in total frustration. I upgraded to 1.03.7 about a month after purchase following the procedure outlined by other contributors on this forum...(You must follow the instructions to the letter).
Since then, the unit has worked as advertised in wired modes: internet connection has been solid and stable with no re-boots. The wireless piece has been a bugger running WEP and in B or G... still had 54MB/s when close to the WRT350N but this dropped considerably when the wireless device was moved to other parts of the house.
Well, I fixed the problem... and wireless piece is now running at 270MB/s (-N Mode) flawlessly throughout my house. See below.
So, what have I learned and is it of any use to anyone else?
First off, everyone's configurations, equipment, environment, needs and expectations are different, so take the following with a grain of salt. This is my experience.
    My Network and stuff:
    Cable Broadband - Cable modem
DellXPS-3.4Ghz (Desktop), 1 TeraByte drives configured for RAID 0, 1 GB Network card, lot's of USB devices hanging off it - everything running on MS XP - System is wired to the WRT350N.
Dell8100-1.5Ghz (Desktop), 500GB Drives, 1GB Network card and a bunch of peripherals - everything running on MS XP - System is wired to the WRT350N.
1 Terabyte USB External Drive used primarily for backups. Originally purchased to hang off the USB port of the WRT350N as a quasi-network drive... It can be configured and it does work. However, I had trouble with Norton Ghost 12 doing backups to the drive via the 350N USB port. I removed it from the 350N USB port and re-attached it to a spare DELL XPS USB port - no problems since. I also have a number of printers, three of which are directly connected to the Desktops.
I purchased a HP Photosmart C8180 All-in-one (good unit BTW) as a network (wired or wireless) color printer and for photo printing etc. It worked intermittently with the 350N when configured for wireless using WEP and in B/G mode. The printer, unfortunately does not support wireless in -N mode using WPA2 Personal-AES. So it is now wired with network connection at 1 GB.
Dell Latitude D600 Laptop... Frustrating!!! With the on-board Intel Wireless B/G, I never really got consistent, solid network or Internet connections via the 350N. It worked poorly with the 350N - wireless. It worked fine wired to the 350N.
Solution: I disabled the on-board Intel Wireless and purchased a Linksys WPC300N - It is a -N device. I really crossed my fingers with this purchase. Well, the card works. I get solid, repeatable wireless connection to the Network/Internet anywhere in the house at 270MB/s. I have had absolutely no interference from any of my neighbor's B and G routers. I have yet to experience any degradation in speed or signal. Use: WPA2 Personal-AES for security. Faster than all the other settings I've tried.
So the 350N works in my case, as advertised. My first -N appliance - the WPC300N card for the Dell laptop also works as advertised. I haven't hooked up XBox or fully utilized/explored all the other features nor have I set up the router for VPN (one step at a time).
So here's what I have in the configuration:
Under SETUP/Basic Setup: Internet Connection Type: Automatic configuration - DHCP
DHCP Server: Enabled - Use DHCP Reservation and assign your devices (MAC Addresses) to IPs
Under SETUP/MAC Address Clone: Enable. My DELL XPS MAC is cloned here (Must do)
    Under SETUP/Advanced Routing:NAT Enabled
    Under Wireless/Basic Wireless Settings:
    Network Mode: Mixed (b/g/n)
Network Name (SSID): Put your SSID here (anything other that linksys!) Radio Band: Wide - 40MHz Channel
    Wide Channel: 3
    Standard Channel: 1 - 2.412GHz
    SSID Broadcast: Enabled
I've experimented with the Auto settings here... it works but I got better results in my case with the above.
Under Wireless/Wireless Security: Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
    Encryption: AES
Passphrase: I put a name in here
Key Renewal: The default I believe is 3600 (works). I put in 7200 (works)
Under Wireless/Wireless MAC Filter: (Kind of up to you. For added security, I enabled it and put in my Laptop and other wireless devices MAC addresses here.
    Wireless MAC Filter: Enabled
Access Restriction : Permit PCs listed below to access the wireless network.
MAC Address Filter List : Fill out your applicable MAC addresses here. Under Wireless/Advanced Wireless Settings: AP Isolation: Disabled
    Frame Burst: Enabled
    Authentication Type: (Default: Auto)
    Basic Rate: (Default: Default)
    Transmission Rate: (Default: Auto)
    N Transmission Rate: (Default: Auto)
    CTS Protection Mode: (Default: Auto)
    Beacon Interval: 50
    DTIM Interval: 1
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2307
    RTS Threshold: 2306
    Under Security/Firewall:
Firewall-SPI Firewall Protection: Enabled Everything else - default
Under Storage: I had this configured to handle my USB Terabyte drive but since decoupled it for other reasons. It works and has worked as a Network drive in my case.
Under Access Restrictions: I left everything default here.
Under Applications and Gaming: I have done nothing here. Can't advise on port forwarding or the like.
Under Administration: Everything here is vanilla except under Management I have enabled Upnp.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers!

My WRT350N has given me very little trouble, however the storage link does not work that great. I definitly like the WRT350 router over my old WRT300. Thanks for the tips and info. I just wished that LInksys came out with firmware updates for there products more often that fixed bugs.

  • Will Apple cover me if updating to iOS5 on ipod Touch 3rd gen ruins/bricks it?

I have heard stories of some people's apple products not working/bricked after attempting to upgrade to iOS5.
I have a 1.5 year old ipod Touch 3rd gen. No warranty on it from Apple (tho I do have one from Square Trade for ADH, but I called them and they said if it is a software issue, they don't cover it.)
I am very concerned about d/ling the ios5 upgrade and it ruining my ipod touch.  In effect, I will take a device that could fetch almost $200 on ebay (which I could then use to upgrade to a Touch 5gen), and turn it into a worthless piece of junk if I upgrade and it ruins it.
Also, I know that they have released 5.0.1 (beta I believe?) for update.   I still read stories on here from people waiting until now (Nov, a month after it was first released when so many people tried to d/l it and had terrible problems), but now are still getting network timed out error msgs, etc.
So is there ANY protection from Apple if their update should screw my ipod touch??
Should I just wait longer for a final, stable version  of ios 5? (like v5.1)  Or just totally skip the iOS 5 upgrade and stay safe with iOS 4?  I don't know that it is really worth the $200 loss risk to upgrade to iOS5.  (i.e. 3rd gen doesn't have the ability to find and lock/wipe my lost touch, etc.)
I do know that I should:
    1) install itunes 10.5 anew on my laptop  (itunes and syncing WAS done on my tower, until I just got it back from being serviced for some Major problems/virues/malware/etc.  I'm not comfortable using it, as the problems on it included not being able to start Local Services, connect to the internet, no audio services, etc.  The guy says it is booting up and services are working now, but you never know....But i digress...)
    2) be on AC and not battery on my laptop
    3) be hardwired (ethernet) to the internet and not use my wireless connection
    4) turn off Windows 7 Firewall, and disable my PC Tools Spyware Docter with Antivirus.
So, what do you all think? should I wait until later to upgrade to say os 5.1?  Should I even RISK upgrading to iOS5 on a touch 3gen and lose almost $200 cash?  And will Apple give me ANY protection should it ruin my touch?  (I seriously doubt it.)
    Thanks for input.

Before proceeding with the update, it wouldn't hurt to manually back up the iPod in iTunes by right->clicking on it from under the Devices section and choosing Backup.    See this article for more information on what is stored in the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Also make sure that any content you may have synced to the device from iTunes, such as Music, movies, TV Shows, podcasts, etc. are all stored on your computer and in iTunes before updating the iPod's version of iOS.
Otherwise, I would go ahead with the upgrade.  I didn't have any issues with it on my iPhone.

  • Iphone 6 touch ID did not working , then restored and it bricked

I'm very depressed now. My iphone 6 is not working. Touch ID didn't work so I restored and updated to 8.1.3 and it stuck at 50% and showed the error 53 then bricked . I bought it in New Zealand and I'm working in another country. What should I do now ?

    Hey David,
The troubleshooting suggestions in this article will resolve most issues like the one that you’ve described, where you saw the alert message when attempting to restore your iPhone 6.

  • My mid-2011 MacBook Air bricks itself after 10.7.2 update

I have a new MacBook Air (11") that was working just great, until today.  Today, I used Software Update to install the updates, which included 10.7.2 as well as the recue partition update.
I did everything you're supposed to do, and when it rebooted, the gray screen comes up, and it shows the spinny doohickey on the bottom showing that it's working.  Then, suddenly, up pops a big "no" icon (the circle with the slash through it) after about 60 seconds.
It simply doesn't do anything after that.
Hard-power-off, wait, power-on, repeat, same thing.
So I reboot with cmd-R to get the rescue partition. It works fine; I ask it to re-install Mac OS X, which then takes about 45 minutes (argh).  Finally, Mac OS X is back, the machine is nicely booted up, all my files are there, everything is good.. But of course, the reinstall took me back to 10.7.1.
All I want to do is upgrade my fricking iPhone to IOS 5.0, but I can't do that without knowing I can sync which requires iCloud which of course requires 10.7.2.  So I *have* to re-do the upgrade.
Back to Software Update, back to installing 10.7.2. And .. 20 minutes later .. back to bricked MacBook Air.
What a waste of my time. What a failure, Apple. I'm very very very very very unhappy that I've wasted so much time just to update my damned iPhone to IOS 5. I'm still without an update. Now I'm trying to figure out how to move my iTunes to another machine -- not nearly as obvious as it should be.  ARGH. I'm going to throw this MacBook Air off the balcony in about 10 minutes. :-(
    Thanks for listening.

Wow, you're right -- I can't believe it. I just really can't believe they would screw up so badly, yet when I search for "10.7.2 filevault" I don't find more than a couple of articles about it on the web (including this thread). Why on earth wouldn't Apple have put up some kind of warning about this? I can't believe it, really. It's insane.
On my newly-functional 10.7.2 MBA, I wanted to test your theory and so I turned on filevault 2 and encrypted the main disk again.  It of course wanted me to reboot. So I rebooted. And *blammy* -- same error / boot failure.  Wow.  Also, interestingly, even on a working 10.7.2 system, you can't mount a USB drive that was encrypted using Filevault 2 encryption (in Disk Utility, e.g., as a "Mac OS X, journalled, encrypted" volume that was encrypted with DiskUtility on Lion 10.7.1).  I still have a 10.7.1 machine that I will not upgrade until I can at least decrypt the disk -- but right now, Disk Utility tells me it fails decrypting the external USB disk so I'm hosed!!! ARGH.
Now, going back to the booting problem after upgrade -- for anyone's reference who's still keeping score -- you can easily recover from the booting problem with upgrading a Filevault 2 root drive: Power-cycle the machine and then hold down cmd-r to bring up the Lion Recovery application.  Within Lion Recovery, choose "Disk Utility", and then click on the (as yet unmounted, still encrypted) root hard drive to select it. Then go to the File menu, and choose "Turn off encryption" for this disk.  It then prompts you for the password, and if you enter it, *blammy* you're back up and running again.
In my case, the disk had only just begun encrypting so the action was instant, and then once it confirmed the disk was now decrypted, I simply chose "Restart" from the Apple menu, and I was back in business (no hairy re-installs to deal with).  If this is an already-encrypted volume, presumably it'll take you a bit longer (the normal 45-minutes to 2 hours) to decrypt it.  But at least no more installing software -- it'll "just work".
Maybe I'll go post a simpler version of these instructinos on the other threads, but this is the simplest fix -- just turn off filevault 2 from within Lion Recovery, basically, and that fixes the boot problems.
Apple, if you're listening, you really really really need to say something to your users so they know. Many many many MBA users are likely to have still not upgraded. You can prevent them from hating you and your products by making sure they don't screw the pooch here.  Short version: Mid-2011 MacBook Airs running Filevault 2 WILL NOT BOOT after 10.7.2 update; so users should turn off Filevault2 before upgrading.

  • 3GS freezes on upgrade ipHone 4.0.2 - it's a brick now!

    Hi,
I Have a 3GS on contract from O2 in the UK. Last night I got the note in iTunes to say that 4.0.2 is ready for installing. I was on 4.0.1 and have the lastest iTunes in Win 7 / 32-bit. So I did a sync, and started the upgrade. Unfortunately it stalled at some point and just froze.
So I removed the USB plug and got to the "restore iPhone" point, and clicked on "Restore" in iTunes. That unpacked the already downloaded software, verified with Apple, and started the restore. Unfortunately that gets about 3/4 along the progress bar in iTunes and 1/4 on the iPhone - and stalls.
So I tried a few things:
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - restarted Windows and tried again
    - downloaded jpsw files for 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 (iPhone2,14.0.1_8A306Restore and iPhone2,14.0.2_8A400Restore) and pointed to these when I Shift-Clicked on the restore button. With the 4.0.2 it starts up, but freezes at the same point. With 4.0.1 it says something about being an incorrect version and doesn't attempt an installation.
I can't see anything else to try and my iPhone is a brick - please help!!

Hi again. Panic over. I deleted the ipsw file in %AppData% and started agai - and it seems to have gone well. The phone seems to work again.

  • Did I just brick my board? MSI P67A-GD55

So I decided to flash my BIOS to the newest version. I downloaded the newest BIOS and proceeded to flash the BIOS with the MSI utility. After the computer restarted it beeped a couple of times like usual, but it did not continue to windows after that and the screen went black. I saw that the USB stick was being used(light on the USB stick was flashing) so I didn't do anything.
But even after about 45 minutes nothing at happened, the screen was still black. I was reading around online and some people said to clear the CMOS if this happens. After I cleared CMOS and restarted the computer, I got no beeps and no video signal at all. And now nothing happens at all. It does not even beep like usual.
I removed all the ram and restarted the computer and that time I got 3 long beeps. When I put them back in nothing happened like before. So did I brick my board? Is there any way to bring this board back to life? This board was advertised as having a Bios recovery feature(M flash) anyone know how I can use that?
    Thanks for your help.
BTW, I am already going to get a new board, but I won't have it until at least the end of this month. Anyone know how long MSI RMAs take? Will they even RMA the board?
Not related, but I was also having a problem with fan control on this motherboard. No matter what the CPU fan would run at max speed.

If you sent it to MSI in the USA, that is odd as they usually turn things around in 7 working days. If it is a re-seller or outside of the USA it is hard to say how long it will take.
In the usa to check for status, email [email protected] Place the RMA# in your subject and ask for an update.
Yeah this is in the US, the place I sent the motherboard to is only like 3 hours from my house actually.
I'll send them a email. Their online tracker doesn't seem to be updated that often and I can't even go to the tracking page right now for some reason.

  • ZR will not update - Phone is a brick

My 2 month old Xperia ZR (purchased unlocked from Amazon at $549 US) is now a brick.  I bought this phone for its ability to survive underwater, dust resistance and drop test.  It seems just the rugged phone that I needed for 24x7x365 support duty.
Well, I should have asked if the phone would survive an upgrade.  Apparently, it does not.
Performing the 10.3.1.A.2.67 system upgrade failed  as I used PC Companion on Win7.  I was warned it would take 30 minutes for the upgrade by PC Companion.  At 26 minutes, I received an error message.  The retry also failed.  Then, the driver would not load and Win7 kept telling me the ZR was an unknown USB dev ice.
BUT, by this time, my phone was a brick.  It would turn on, show the SONY logo and, then, turn off.
So, I call Sony Mobile Tech Support (1-866-766-9374 or 1-877-7XPERIA).  Mayelin sent my a procedure to try in recovering my phone.  No go.  So, I call back and talk to Jamie.  She doesn't even want to read my case notes (1-840176438).  She goes to read the notes and transfers me to Mr. Dialtone.  I call back and take to Natasha and ask for a Supervisor.  Apparently, Sony does not staff their Call Centers with Supervisors.  So, she asks for my number in order to have someone in Escalations call me back.  No, she did not know when the callback would take place nor any timeframe like that there.
After 25 years of technical support experience in data networks, I know bull**bleep** when I hear it.  There really ought to be a law that mandates Supervisors be present and available at all times a support call center is operating.  The support bull**bleep** performed by companies such as Sony, and/or its outsource support vendors, is just criminal considering how much their products cost.  Very unprofessional and user hostile.
I have included the procedure sent to me by Mayelin.  It may be of help to some other poor and unfortunate person who might have also bought this Hercules of a phone.
I will wait until Monday when I might be able to get a Supervisor.  I will then discuss how useless it is for me to undergo their 7-10 business days "evaluation" return-to-factory service when their system upgrade killed my phone.  I would expect and advance replacement on the next business day at the very least.  BUT, apparently, $549 does not get you this when you buy one of these indestructible phones.
How sad.  Has Sony quality really come to this?  I own a lot of Sony A/V and some professional products.  I just bought one of their new VAIO laptops at top dollar from a Sony Store (Stanford Shopping Center).
If this experience has taught me anything is that I should probably stick to Sony Ericsson or not buy Sony Mobile products at all.  My old Sony-Ericsson T515 never gave me any hiccups as big as this Xperia ZR is giving me.

  • MacBook Pro 8,2 bricked radeon/i915 even outside linux

    My hardware:
    MacBook Pro 8,2
    core i7, 8GB Ram, Radeon HD 6400M Series GPU, 1680x1050 non-glare screen
After having done a lot of reading, I tried to install Arch Linux onto my MacBook Pro. I re-installed MacOS, did all updates, and followed the wiki instructions. After a couple of failed attempts to get GRUB to EFI-boot from the Apple bootloader (carefully avoiding the usage of efibootmgr), I finally managed to EFI-boot the base system via reFind and EFISTUB. I quickly was able to set up everything I need, only X would work only with the radeon driver. But since I went through all the trouble to EFI-boot the machine solely for the purpose of being able to use the i915 graphics, I tried all the kernel paramters (radeon.modeset=0 and all the i915 parameters that are mentioned all over the places in all sorts of recommended/mentioned combinations). But no luck, startx would always exit with a "no screens found" message when configuring xorg.conf to use the "intel" driver. Needless to say, both xf86-video-radeon and xf86-video-intel were installed. Using the module acpi_call and doing "sudo turn_off_gpu.sh" ends up with "failed" messages only. Doing "lspci | grep VGA" returns both intel and AMD graphics adapter, so I should actually have successfully booted in EFI mode. I started blacklisting the radeon module, but lspci -k still shows the radeon module for the gpu. The only thing I did not try is adding the "outb" lines to GRUB as I'm not using GRUB and was very reluctant to change anything about my working EFI boot setup. Finally, I decided to try vgaswitcheroo. I read that I need to enable debugfs in the fstab before, so I added the line "debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs 0 0" to fstab. Careful as I am, I rebooted before installing vgaswitcheroo.
And from then on, arch linux boots into a black screen. I can log in if I switch to tty1 or another and type blind, and I can reboot that way. Just as a routine, I try to boot up MacOS, and it also boots into a black screen. This has always worked so far, I tried that regularly. I totally panick and grab an Ubuntu 12.04 CD that happens to lie around and boot it via the apple bootloader in bios compatibility mode (which worked, before, too). It also boots into black screen. Even the darn MacOS Install DVD boots into a black scren now!
But I'm not the one that gives up easily. Since Arch displays all the boot messages until it loads the virtual console (I think), I messed around with the kernel parameters again and it turns out I can get to console login if I use radeon.modeset=0. I configured X to use the fbdev driver again, and there you go, I get graphical login and whatnot with radeon.modeset=0. Still, even though fbdev is used, the temperature is around 70 to 80 degrees Celsius. I decide to finally install vgaswitcheroo (systemd-vgaswitcheroo-units), since the whole thing is bricked anyway, and enable it via systemd. Radeon module is blacklisted. I still am only able to reach graphical or console target when radeon.modeset=0 is set, but now I got a X running with desktop effects on fbdev driver and around 50 degrees Ceslius temperature. Still, every other OS boots into black screen.
I seem to have completely messed up everything. Strangely enough, the arch system seems to be completely usable (except that it wakes up from suspend with that black screen now), but it seems to be the only system that can be run on that machine now. I would greatly appreciate any help on what might have gone wrong or what I could try to enable the gpu for other systems again.
Edit: I seem to have managed to brick reFind now, too. While trying to boot the MacOS Installation medium it seems to have magically "fixed" the EFI partition leaving me with no reFind at all now. There's no way I can access that stupid thing anymore. Gotta send it in, probably (

I'm still reluctant to give up on that bricked machine... Since it is able to display part of the boot up messages of the arch install cd and the previously working installation showed everything until loading of the virtual console (at least that's what I believe it did when the screen went black), it looks to me that the problem lies in initializing a different graphical output. That would also explain why I was able to initialize X only with the fbdev driver... and the screen didn't flicker during boot-up when I did radeon.modeset=0 so I assume it stayed on framebuffer mode all along.
Does anyone know of a boot medium that boots into framebuffer video mode even though a GPU is present? All I'd need is a bash or similar shell. I can load into the UEFI shell with arch install CD, but I'm not familiar with that shell and it follows a different syntax than I am used to, as it is designed for an entirely different purpose. If anyone knows a boot medium that does not try to pipe the graphical output through the gpu (or the integrated i915 graphics). Must be something like this around?
