BRIDGE ALTERING TONALITY & SATURATION?

Ref; Win7-64/ PS CS6. Adobe RGB set in the camera, & PS Work-Space.
I recently elected to "alternate" from Canon DPP-- to Bridge for reviewing .CR2 raw files from my Canon 7D/ CF card.
I noted that when selecting an image & clicking the Space-bar the image goes to "full" screen, & if I click the Space-bar again "it" returns to the thumbnail with no apparent change to the file---- BUT---
if I click the space bar to enlarge---, and then click on the image to "zoom in" on it, the image  becomes "darker" & far more saturated, & when I click the Space-bar to return to the thumbnail---The thumbnail  has changed to the darker more saturated condition.
When the images are opened in ACR they are unchanged from the original.
Just curious as to why Bridge would make those "visual" changes.   Though it doesn't alter the raw file in any way, it seems rather strange, & it makes the image evaluation process a bit "sticky".
Regards,
Leigh

Cannon and Nikon have different RAW formats, so Bridge will have to have correct conversion program to read them. Make sure you have latest update of Bridge. Don't have answer but remember seeing questions about Canon images. Try a search of this forum with Canon RAW or thumbs or other variations. Also check out search of knowledgebank.

  • Bridge altering images automatically

When I click on a Canon file thumbnail in CS3 Bridge to look at it in Bridge, not RAW, Bridge alters the image leaving it lacking contrast and with desaturated color. The image looks nothing like the original thumbnail. When the image is then opened in RAW it looks exactly like the desaturated, uncontrasty image that Bridge turned it into. This does not happen to the Nikon files I look at in Bridge. If I open a Canon image in Photoshop, going straight to RAW, the image retains all the contrast and saturation of the original file. I have tried everything to stop Bridge from manhandling my Canon files but have had no luck. Any thoughts as to why Bridge ruins the Canon files and not Nikon's and what I can do about it?

  • Tonal Saturation

I would like to see a curves-like box available for saturation based on tonal value. By adjusting the curve, a user could manipulate levels of saturation based upon luminosity i.e. shadow saturation, midtone saturation, and highlight saturation.
Why is this important? Well, the most important reason is that the human eye is very poor at seeing color definition in low light. Conversely, cameras are just as good at seeing color in the dark as in the light. This is one of the reasons why cameras aren't very well able to reproduce night scenes.
In any case, I would like to see a lum:sat box. What do the rest of you think?

When you say the Basic panel has disappeared, do you mean the whole right side panel or individual tools such as the White Balance tool is gone? If it is the whole right side panel that is missing, you may have hidden it. Using the Tab key, you can cycle between hiding and showing the side panels. You can also move your mouse over to the far right side of your screen to get the panel restored but it will disappear when you move your mouse off the panel. There is also a small triangle on the left edge of the right panel that you can right click on in order to determine the show/hide behavior (I personally use the manual mode).
Regarding the individual windows contained in the left/right panels, they can be opened and closed by clicking of the triangle that is displayed next to name of the tool in its header bar. While you can elect what modules will be shown on the LR Top panel, I am not aware of any mechanism to completely hide individual tools in the left/right panels. If all else failes, you can hit the Shift/Tab key combo a few times to restore all of your windows the the default behavior.

  • Altering Hue/Saturation using scripting

    Hi,
I can't work out how to change the hue/saturation/brigtness in photoshop using scripting (currently using applescript) - the 'adjust' command doesn't seem to work.

  • Use Color or Magic Bullet Looks for complete grade and effects?

I am a long time MB Looks user - not heavy dosages but I do find it easy and fast as it keeps you inside FCP and along with the 3-Way CC it was efficient.
I am nearing an edit on a 80 minute documentary which involves going from color to clips converted to black & white and sepia tone for effect. I am thinking to use Color workflow for the entire color grade and effects.
Does Color dispense the need for Looks altogether? I have used color a few times now but not on a complete feature length, so I would need to sharpen my knowledge.

Color, MB Looks, FCP's 3WCC are all arrows in our quiver. We don't need to give one up to use another.
I'm working on a doc now (it's rendering out in Color as I type this) that has "Hero" shots being treated in MB Looks. But I use Color to even out all those Hero shots so the MBL settings I'm using will be applied consistently. But even then I find it useful to to precede MBL with a 3WCC so I can easily adjust the tonality, saturation, and color palette of the shot without having to step back into the MBL interface.
I can definitely guarantee that I couldn't have graded this show in 2.5 days if I just kept myself to using only the FCP interface. Even with the prep time for the Color round-trip - I get better results faster...

  • Photo Landscape versus Portrait Orientation Anomaly

I took 2 photos in portrait orientation (long side vertical, i.e.,  "oriented vertically").  I viewed these in Adobe Bridge CS3 and of course initially found them to be lying on their side, oriented horizontally.  I used the button visible on upper right in Adobe Bridge that shows a partial circle and arrowhead to change the orientation of the photos to be oriented vertically.  I opened these in Photoshop CS3 and they displayed correctly oriented vertically.  I tweaked them and saved them, thinking that they must now be correctly oriented vertically, as they displayed correctly both in Bridge and in Photoshop.  However, when these are viewed in a web browser (Mozilla or Internet Explorer) they display incorrectly, horizontally oriented.  I know this must have a ridiculously simple explanation and solution, but it is not apparent to me how to tell Bridge or Photoshop to orient the photo in default orientation as it will be viewed in other non-Adobe programs.  Where is this information stored and how can I correct it?  This seems to be an undesirable behavior, as a user can be unaware that the image is not correctly rotated.
    Thank you.

Thank you Curt for your helpful answer.
This topic remains confusing but here is what I have found:
I am examining 2 copies of an image:
    a. an original image which appears unrotated in Bridge and Photoshop and a browser (i.e., appears wider across than in height) which I'll call "Original".
    b. a modified image which appears oriented in portrait orientation in Bridge and Photoshop (rotated from the original) but oriented in landscape orientation (unrotated) in a browser, which I'll call "Anomalous"
    (1) In Bridge, I was previously not displaying the "Orientation" flag.  I have turned this on as you have suggested.  This flag reads:
    Original: Normal
    Anomalous: Rotate -90 degrees
[This is certainly a helpful indication that the image is being displayed as rotated, though you have to hunt for it.]
    (2) In Photoshop CS3, I read the following relevant "File Info" metadata, none of which I can modify:
    Original image:
Camera Data 2 > Pixel Dimension X: 2592 [largest dimension]
       Camera Data 2: Orientation: "Normal"
Advanced > TIFF Properties: Orientation: 1
Advanced > EXIF Properties: PixelXDimension: 2592
File > Page Setup > Orientation: Portrait
    Anomalous image:
Camera Data 2 > Pixel Dimension X: 2592 [largest dimension]
       Camera Data 2: Orientation: "Normal"
Advanced > TIFF Properties: Orientation: 1
Advanced > EXIF Properties: PixelXDimension: 2592
File > Page Setup > Orientation: Portrait
In other words, I can find no imbedded metadata item in the image as Photoshop reads out the metadata that indicates the state of the rotation flag that Bridge has modified.
Given the available and somewhat discordant findings so far, it appears that I'll have to adjust the rotation of the rotated image in Bridge back to "Normal" first before opening and rotating the image in Photoshop.  This seems to be the only way I can find to set the orientation flag to "Normal" in Photoshop, so that the image will open both in Photoshop and in a browser to the proper orientation.
Are you aware of how Photoshop might explicitly display the value of the Bridge-altered orientation flag?
    Thank you again.

  • JPEG vs. NEF

    Hello,
I have recently started shooting in the NEF (RAW) format with my Nikon D7100. I literally consumed and swallowed the whole lot of articles regarding RAW vs. JPEG format and learned that RAW is better, RAW retains more data, RAW has more details, professionals use only RAW, etc. However, I took a few test shots of the same objects comparing NEF and 24 pixels JPEG and frankly after post-processing in Lightroom 5 was unable to see any significant difference between them. A few advantages of NEF (RAW) that I nevertheless can see are that LR has more editing options for RAW such as more options in WB editing, lens correction and camera calibration. Another possible advantage of RAW is that it does not require messing with WB, day light control and other initial camera set-up. Thus, my question is whether it is worth shooting in RAW given that is takes more space on a memory card and after alI I have to save the edited RAW file as JPEG on my hard drive? Does the edited RAW file lose data after exporting it on a hard drive as JPEG? I would appreciate it if anybody could share knowledge.
    Thanks and regards,
    Alex

If you don't do any significant editing on the image, and you don't need full dynamic range, jpeg is pretty much as good as raw.
    Advantages of raw:
Raw can capture 3 - 4 stops more dynamic range, i.e. the range between the lightest and darkest parts of the picture
Exposure latitude: raw can recover from much more over or under exposure without loss or damage to image information
Much greater ability to alter colour and white balance in post processing.  More than minor wb adjustment in jpeg can result in unwanted hue changes or loss of image detail
Much greater ability to alter tonal balace in post processing.
In addition to color and tone, there is also detail - you can't un-apply noise reduction (or sharpening) done to the jpeg, for example.

  • B&W fade to color

In celebration of our 50th anniversary, I would like to create a series of ads that have a black & white image (old) fading into a full color image (new) as the background.  What is the best way to accomplish this?
    Ubiquitous Info:
    Adobe CS6 PS v13.0.1 x32 extended on a Win XP sp3 OS
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
    Susan

    Susan,
To show what others are talking about, I did this B/W to Color Image:
In my case, I Duplicated the Background Layer (in color), then applied a Hue, Saturation, Brightness Adjustment Layer, and altered the Saturation to 0%. I then applied a Layer Mask to that Adjustment Layer, and created that with a Linear Gradient from Black to Transparent, in that Layer Mask. Note: I used Ps CS 2 on this laptop, so your GUI will look a bit different, but the process will be the same.
    Good luck,

  • How can I prevent Bridge from altering my photos?

    HELP!!!
Within the past few days my Bridge CS4 program has been making my life miserable. I had been utilizing the program to batch photos from my extensive photo library, rename them, sort them (i.e., change sort/ordinal number), and the like without any difficulty and then suddenly, after executing such processes my thumbnails turned completely white and would not open in Bridge, Photoshop CS4 Extended - much less anything else. I tried reopening them as .jpg's, .psd's, .tiff's to no avail. I went into properties on each photo and checked the "open with" tab, and it noted that the photo was not recognized. I had some moderate success opening them with Quicktime Picture Viewer, but converting them back to a Bridge readable format (i.e., their original state) proved impossible. Having noticed that Quicktime had hijacked nearly my entire photo opening process, I uninstalled it in the hope that it would solve the problem. It didn't. I then went into Bridge and Photoshop CS4 preferences to try and modify how photos were opened, and couldn't seem to find anything applicable. I did, however, increase the memory and cache allocated to each program substantially.
Last night I ran into more problems with Bridge. While scanning both photo negatives and prints into Bridge and saving them into various files, I encountered the same problem indicated in paragraph one. I tried scanning several of them a second time and succeeded; however, I had to save them to a different file and give them dissimilar names in .tiff format. In the process I found more than a dozen ways to spell "Mexico," "Tokyo," and "Ukraine"! They would not save as .jpg's or .psd's.
I use Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, have a Pentium 4 Dual Core (2.8) processor, 4 GB Memory, Nvidia GE Force 7600 video card (yes, the drivers are up to date), and Hewlett Packard Photosmart C7180 and C7280 printers for scanning. All of the photos involved are stored on a Maxtor One Touch 1TB Turbo auxillary hard drive.
Also, could anyone suggest how I can get the  SD/MMC card reader on my PC to work?
Thanks to any and all for assisting me with my problem.

Thank you curt y for your quick response. I have seen your recommendations on the adobe forums link in the past and many of your solutions
seem to have helped other people with Bridge problems. I took your suggestion and gave it a whirl - all preferences were restored to defaults - and the problem continues. I get the feeling the problems lies with the program's interaction with Windows.
Having tried a few more things, I've found that I can move the photo shell (the inscription underneath the thumbnail states, "Window Shell Common") to my desktop and open it there with Photoshop (i.e., going through the song and dance of "open with" and clicking on the CS4 icon, where it opens up in RAW). I must then move it over to Photoshop CS4 and save it as a .jpg or a .psd. Unfortunately, after all this it still won't open in Bridge. By all appearances, Bridge somehow has become corrupted and I'm probably going to have to do a complete Photoshop CS4 uninstall and reinstall.
I've spent hundreds - if not thousands - of hours scanning into my system some 10,000 photographs of my travels (yes, they are backed up on discs), and Bridge should not be negatively impacting my ability to organize and manipulation them as is happening now. If the uninstall/reinstall does not resolve the problem, I'll be back on this forum for more suggestions.
As for the card reader issue, I'm well aware of the 2GB/over 2GB issue. I typically use a 4GB or more card in my camera. I can download fine through my HP 7180 and 7280 card readers, but my HP 1518n card reader is a different story. I'll work a little more on it, too.
    Thanks again.

Have you tried resetting your preferences by holding down the Ctrl key and starting Bridge?  You will get a reset window, choose all 3 options.
The only thing I know about card readers is that there are 2 versions.  One for cards of 2 gigs or less, and one for HD cards over 2 gigs.  Make sure card and reader match.

  • Images in Bridge preview too red and saturated

I have used Adobe Bridge CS3 successfully for many years. Now all of a sudden all of my images in Preview appear very red and overly saturated. Can anyone tell me what has gone wrong?? thanks.

I did ALL those things and the problem remains.
Just to be sure about ALL, you followed the KB article with removing cache
    and plist etc also?
    Strangely images look okay in
the "content" area but overly saturated in preview.
Could you provide more detail about the file types you are using for this
(maybe even provide a screenshot to clarify better) and OSX you are using.
And are you using High Quality settings for preview?
Do you think this means my Bridge is cooked
No, I can't think of that, it must be a setting (or rather resetting)
problem and should be possible to solve to my opinion.
     and i'll have to upgrade?
That's entirely up to you, I can only tell you that Adobe has a 3-version
upgrade policy, after this you need to buy a full version to keep on track.
But you surely benefit from CS5 Bridge that is much faster and more stable
    then the CS3 edition

  • Bridge NEF view  - selected image altered - Camera Raw issue?

I use a Nikon D700  and CS3 Bridge on a MAC OSX 10.4.11, and when browsing NEF images in Bridge there is an action performed on the image whenever I click on it. I use the settings where a filmstrip is along the bottom and upon selection a larger image appears above. Initially the image appears as I recall exposing it and looks balanced with good saturation, but after selection the image brightens and loses saturation after a few moments. When I open the image in Camera Raw I find that the Brightness is set at +50 and the contrast is set at +25, and the Blacks slider is set at 5. When I reset those parameters to zero I do not recover the look of the image as it was before selection in the bridge window. In order to do that I have to raise the saturation, decrease the brightness and do a fair amount of work to get back to the way the image appeared in Bridge prior to selection. Can anyone tell me what is happening to the image in bridge and how to keep the image from changing after I select it, or at least how to find the settings that have been evidently applied to the image?  If I right click on the thumbnail first, I find that the image will open in camera raw without any changes being made in Bridge, so I was able to make jpegs that show the difference between the two images. The first image is as it appears before selcting the thumbnail, and the second is the image in camera raw. If I were to have selected the image normally with a left click in Bridge, the photo as you see it in camera raw would have appeared in bridge and not been recoverable to its earlier state. Can someone help me undertand what is happening here? How can I find out what Bridge or Camera Raw is doing to the images and retain the appearance as it first appears in Bridge? Thank you for your help.

    This is a common question.
What you see first in Bridge is actually a JPG which the camera has embedded in the NEF, and uses all the camera's color settings (contrast, saturation, etc.).  Once you select the NEF, ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) attempts to render its own preview of the NEF.  Because ACR does not understand the camera's color settings, it gives you its default rendering, which usually is somewhat different than the camera's.
In newer versions of ACR (5.x), Adobe has profiles which mimic the camera's presets ('Standard', 'Vivid', etc.) and can be applied automatically in Bridge.  Unfortunately, you will need CS4 for this version of ACR (and these profiles have some issues of their own, e.g. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/479960?tstart=0).  You can also create your own ACR presets to more or less emulate a particular look (I believe you will need CS4 for this as well).

  • Why is the color so saturated in Bridge?

I am using Photoshop CC with Window 7. When I open my raw files in Bridge, the color is very saturated, particularly the red and green. If I click on the image it will return to normal. Anyone has idea why?
    Thanks

I have the same issue. Low volume while using speakerphone function. At 1' (30cm) it measures at almost half the dB of a blackberry pearl speakerphone. Basically renders the speakerphone function unusable in anything but the quietest environments, and even then its questionable. There are several people in the office I work at that have a 3G and 3GS phones. 3G phones tend to be a bit better but still quiet compared to Motorola, Nokia, and Blackberries. The other 3GS phones were just as bad as mine. This is definitely not a user error.

  • Bridge/PS CS3 display less saturated than other apps?

For a while I was sure I was seeing the dreaded "red color cast" on converting extended-gamut documents (ProPhoto, aRGB) to sRGB.  But a little experimentation has revealed that the problem is not in conversion, it's in how Bridge and PS display the images.
For an example of what I'm talking about, look at http://www.jhmg.net/misc/sRGB/colorShift.png   This is a screenshot with the same image file opened in both PS and WIndows picture viewer.  As you can see, the one on the right (Windows Picture Viewer) is slightly more saturated and has a significant red color cast compared to the same file displayed by PS.  My first thought was that I had accidentally set the advanced "desaturate colors" option in Color Settings, but that's not the case (see http://www.jhmg.net/misc/sRGB/colorSettings.png).
This color shift happens no matter what file format I use (PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF).  When the file displays in PS it looks like the one on the left, but in Windows or in a browser (Firefox, IE8) it has a red cast.  This happens on ALL images.
I have also checked to make sure the formats that support embedded profiles (PNG, JPEG) have the correct profiles.  For BMP and GIF, when I open the file in PS and assign sRGB, the image looks like the one on the left (less saturated).
Windows and PS/Bridge just don't render the colors the same way, and this is 100% reproducible.
Note: My monitor is calibrated, and I have a custom monitor profile installed at the OS level.  I can't find any way to specify a monitor profile in PS so I assume it will use whatever the OS provides.

    J Maloney wrote:
If you ASSIGN your monitor profile to an image already CONVERTED to sRGB in PS, it looks like Windows viewer. This is because Windows viewer is not color managed
If I understand you, then any sRGB image displayed on my monitor in a non-color-managed app will be more saturated and redder than it should be because its pixel values are being interpreted as if they were in my monitor's custom wider-than-sRGB colorspace when in fact they're not.  When displayed in PS, Photoshop "knows" that they're in sRGB and my monitor isn't, and adjusts accordingly.  Right?
Here are some shots from the MS Color control panel applet comparing my monitor's gamut (color shape) to sRGB (white/gray shape):
    From "below":
    From the side:
    From "above":
This explains why there's more red, but curiously I don't see the same effect in the green, which has an even wider gamut as shown below.  Maybe the green levels in this image aren't high enough to be shifted appreciably?

  • Will apple ever introduce saturation alterations?

Will apple ever include a "saturation" button in which it is possible to alter the degree of colour on the screen similar to the brightness slider bar? Many complain that their screens lack the vibrant colours needed to really enjoy watching movies and playing their favourite apps. Including this feature could boost sales and popularity of all the iDevices,  including iPod touch which generally has a poor colour quality.

I personally doubt it, but let Apple know of your concern here. They should have a Gamma adjustment to get rid of the yellow hue of screens too. Unfortunately, you have to jailbreak to do that.
