Bridge broadband modem to wireless?

Hi all sorry if i do anything wrong im new here. Anyway, need some help. I have taken my airport express with me to a friends house and am trying to setup a wireless network using the airport express as a base station. I want to be able to share internet round the house while i am here. I have the airport express connected to the desktop computer (XP) with the usb adsl modem via the ethernet card. I then am using the airport express to connect to my laptop over wireless though. I can't get the airport express to share internet. It is just saying local access only. I have enabled ics on the desktop but still no joy. Please help!

Resolved, firewall issue.

  • I recently purchased an airport extreme base station. I want to replace my older linksys wireless router. I had a successful set up but can not get it to talk to broadband modem, I am missing something but what?

I recently purchased an airport extreme to replace my older linksys wireless router. had a successful set up but can not get connected to the internet. for some reason, which I am sure is apparent to others, i am missing some needed info to connect to the dsl broadband modem that I have.  would love some good tips.

    Try this:
Turn off or remove power from the DSL model, the router, and your computer. Wait not less than one minute. Restore power to the modem and wait until the status lights indicate a connection to the ISP. Next, restore power to the router and wait until the status light shows connection to the modem. Last, turn on the computer. Check your Network preferences to be sure they are configured for a DHCP connection and that the router has received a valid IP address (not 169.xxx.xxx.xxx).

  • Firefox is showing "Server not found" when Fedora 14 NetworkManger is detecting ppp connection through wireless broadband modem

    Hi,
I am using Wireless broadband modem. Network manager is detecting the modem and successfully acquring an ip through ppp0. But Firefox is showing "Server not found". I have found that /etc/resolv.conf is updated properly. And ping or nslookup on some url like www.google.com is working from terminal. So it seems either firefox is not able to use DNS or ppp connection. I have also tried by disabling eth or lo. But of no use.

    See this thread: here.
However, please don't use 192.168.0.2 for the router but 192.168.137.2 instead. Home sharing uses 192.168.137.1 on the sharing computer instead of 192.168.0.1 as it was in earlier Windows versions.
To make the change, unplug the WRT from your network. Wire your second computer to a LAN port of the WRT.
Open the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/
On the main setup page, change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.137.2.
On the same page, disable the DHCP server.
    Save settings.
Unplug the computer. Now wire one of the numbered LAN ports of the WRT to your home sharing computer.
    That's it.

  • Which wireless? Time Capsule of Broadband Modem?

    Some advice please!
I have just bought an Apple Time Capsule, but am still within time to send it back if I want to.
I have a household using one hardwired Mac, and two wireless MacBooks.
We use BeBroadband which gives us 24meg internet access.
The BeBroadband modem is a self configuring thing with built in wireless and 4 ports.
What is the best way to incorporate the Time Capsule?
Should I use the Time Capsule's wireless capability, or try and connect it using the BeBroadband's modem for wireless?
If I use BeBroadband's modem, is there any advantage in having the Time Capsule rather than a straight forward Lacie hard drive?
I don't really know what I'm doing, so apologies if it's a silly question......

    Some impulse buying?
What is the best way to incorporate the Time Capsule?
Why did you buy it? What role did you want it to perform? If you want it located remotely from the BeBroadband modem configure the Time Capsule to join your current wireless network. Otherwise you could connect it via Ethernet to the modem.

The Time Capsule provides remote file access, how would you do that with the LaCie drive?

  • How do I install Airport Time Capsule with ATT Uverse when two of my modems are wireless?

I recently purchased an Airport Time Capsule so that I can back up multiple Apple devices. I currently have ATT Uverse and my internet provider. Also, two of my modems are wireless. How can I set up the Time Capsule so the the two wireless modems will still work?

I think you are using wrong terminology so can I ask exactly what is the model number of the wireless modem??
The Uverse is already a router.. and I guess you have cable service.. so there is no need for more modems.. more likely you mean you have two wireless routers and these should be setup as Wireless Access Points.. (WAP or AP). If they are working as routers then you have far too many routers. If they are working as modems you have far too many modems.
It is impossible to tell you how to setup the TC until we know what the setup is.
But let me suggest the most straight forward approach is to plug the TC into the Uverse by ethernet (it cannot be used by wireless.. so this is necessary). Run the TC in bridge mode.. and create a wireless network. Test if you then can access it from your network client devices and do backups from Macs.. if so there is no need for the wireless modems.. leave them off.

  • Apple TV 3 Status Light turns ON and stays ON when I turn ON my Broadband Modem. How do I stop this ?

Since I updated my Apple TV 3 to 5.1.1, the Status Light turns ON and stays ON when I turn ON my Broadband Modem. How do I stop this ?
At the moment I have to go to the HDMI channel that my  ATV 3 is connected to, wake the ATV, then put it back to sleep, to turn OFF the status lght.
When I first got my ATV I did not have this problem, when it was running 5.1.0.
I sent in a Feedback form, but they only as the option to select the OS version of a NON iOS device.
Is there a fix to this that wont involve me leaving my modem ON all the time ?
    I turn my modem OFF when I am not using the Internet because I am a bit paranoid about the security of the data on my devices, and if I leave the modem turned ON all the time it might make me an easier target for hackers etc. { This is NOT part of my question, just explaining why I turn my modem OFF ( I feel safer ) }
    <Edited by Host>

The ATV3 does that to me when I turn on my TV. the light goes on and stays on. If I switch to the ATV3, it seems to be half asleep with the light on ... I do wish Apple would enable the HDMI CEC and then everything would make sense. I've turned off my wireless and on again but the ATV3 light does not turn on automatically for me.
As you pointed out, I guess this could be a small glitch on the new firmware/software update... I wonder if this could be fixed by doing a restore from the iTunes app. I might give it a try tomorrow and see what happens...
    Cheers!

  • Unable to download podcasts on home network thru router on broadband modem

    HELP!
In the last month or so, I am unable to download podcasts thru out home network. Have 2 imacs, one connected wirelessly (N) and one ethernet on a Belkin Router connected to a Motorola Broadband Modem (DHCP). When podcasts are refreshed and begin to download, the downloads often stop. My research reveals that the podcast downloads cause all the machines on the network to become disconnected from the router with the exception of a TIVO connection. Thus no internet access across the VPN. The router remains connected to the internet, and if restarted, the network machines are restored. Wondering if I need to configure a Proxy Server for the VPN and for ITunes handshaking? Guidance appreciated.

Updated information: It appears, according to the Belkin Firewall Security Log, that the podcast downloads are being interrupted by the router which lists the event as a DoS Attack from my ISP address registered to the internet service provider (Comcast). Gathering this is based on high udp activity on port 80 (Can you tell I a over my head here?). I know I can configure certain port privileges in the firewall settings, downloaded the apple port sheets somewhere.......

  • Cricket UM185C Broadband Modem and Snow Leopard 10.6.x

Cricket has (fraudulently in my opinion) jettisoned support for the UM185C USB Broadband modem and Snow Leopard after very little time. I only paid for the UM185C less than 6 months ago and here I am with wasted money and a service I've paid for that is useless.
Anyway, I saw here where intrepid forum users where able to get the Cricket A600 USB Broadband Modem and Snow Leopard to work together after a series of terminal hacks, etc.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2142240&start=15&tstart=0
Is there any hope for making the UM185C work or should I simply discontinue service with Cricket and report them to the BBB for fraud and leave well enough alone.
I think the fact that there's no mention of the UM185C in these forums tells me that most Mac users are ditching Cricket for broadband and I can't blame them. What an unethical company they are. By the way, want to have some fun? Try downloading the "mac" version of the driver from the Cricket site for the UM185C; it's an .exe file for Windows.

    Hi Cowicide Moo,
My name is Ryan and I work in partnership with Cricket Wireless. We are sorry to hear about any confusion you may have encountered regarding the types of software supported by our various selections of broadband devices. On our website, we provide a clear list of modems and support software for customers to be able to determine the correct device to purchase for their computer.

As you'll see, the UM185C is supported by Mac OS X Leopard (10.5+) and earlier, but does not currently support Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6+) 32-bit. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • DSL modem and Wireless G router not connecting.

Alright this one is weird for me. Two days ago I got a Wireless-G CISCO router. Or a WRT54G2 V 1.5 model. Now I set it up on my XP desktop and at first it seemed fine. I tried to get onto the internet and it wouldn't go. Then I tried to connect my laptop to the router and it succeeded, but the router couldn't connect to the internet.
After calling tec they told me that I need to fully bridge my modem. I'll list the specs down there later. Anyway I wen't back to my laptop, which has windows 7, and checked the router but it has a red X to the SSID and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." And the other SSID's around me are fine. Let's not worry about my laptop though. Back to the desktop I learned that for whatever reason my address is 192.168.2.1 and that my modem needs to be fully bridged.
I got the internet to work, but it keeps cutting out. The problem is that the IP adress goes from 192. bla bla to 99. bla bla. It would do this every time I re-cycled the router. It would start at the 192. and give me perfect internet. Then it would switch IP after 30 secounds and go to the 99. which I couldn't do anything online. So do I have to bridge?

Oh and would there be a chance the router and modem are all together not compatible?

  • USB760 Broadband Modem & MiFi Mobile Hotspot & iPad

I have a USB760 Broadband Modem that I use with my Dell Laptop (it does not have wireless built in).
I also have an iPad with wireless and 3G, purchased from Apple last summer.
If I can, I'd like to avoid paying for two separate Verizon accounts.
Is there a way I can access a single Verizon account on both the Dell Laptop and the iPad?  For example, can I:
--Sign up for a single Verizon account that I can access using either the MiFi Mobile Hotspot or the USB760 Modem?
    OR
--Create a hotspot for the iPad from my laptop with the USB760 Modem?
    OR...

  • Read this for all having problem setting up Routers with Broadband Modems

I have used Netgear and Linksys for years now, but hadn't setup a new router for a while. Hence, struggled installing a new Airport Extreme to replace my Linksys Router which was not providing enough signal strength for my Mac Mini based iTunes database to stream to my Apple TV wirelessly. Here is what I did finally to resolve the issue:
My setup: Arris TM502G broadband modem provided by Comcast
    1. I kept the old router powered up and removed the WAN connection from it and connected it to the AE.
    2. After I installed the Airport Utility, I powered up the AE and let it go thru the installation process and allowed it to pick up the settings from the old router. This step is simple and can be done manually.
    3. After that the struggle began as "Renew DHCP" wouldn't get me a valid 71.xxx.xxx.xxx series IP address from the Modem. I read all the posts (and felt the same pain as others). Saw very helpful posts with good intention to help others like "remove the power", "remove the battery from the modem", "let it sit without power for 24hrs", etc.. I couldn't use some of these suggestions as my house will be without an internet connection for a long time.
    4. Finally, I pressed the "Reset" switch behind the modem for a few seconds until all but the power indicator had turned off indicating a reset. Once it came up and all the LEDs were lit, a few seconds later the LED on the AE turned solid Green indicating success. Looked at the Airport Utility and indeed it had got the new IP address.
There are not too many broadband modem manufacturers and so it shouldn't be too difficult to publish the installation procedure under FAQ on Apple support website for all the modems that Apple's test team has tested with. It could save a lot of grief. Even for a geek like me, I had to burn the midnight oil.
PS: My Apple TV is now streaming the movies/tv shows/home videos from my Mac Mini smoothly. That was the reason I purchased this expensive router. And I found the "guest access" feature which I wasn't aware of. Excellent feature to let my son's friends hook up their laptops during a study/school project session without letting them access our other home computers.

do you mean to see that the XP machine is working as a VPN server ?? if yes then you need not require to forward ports on the router...the laptop should be able to connect to the VPN server remotely ..
if not , then connect the VPN server directly to the modem and check whether you can connect to the VPN server remotely from the router ..

  • Have installed OSX Mavericks and Vodafone Mobile Broadband Modem no longer connects despite reloading its software. Now cannot reinstall OSX Mountain Lion

Upgraded to OSX Mavericks. Vodafone Mobile Broadband Modem no longer connects. Tried again after reinstalling latest Vodafone Modem software update for Mac OSX, but no use.

Could somebody give a feedback about the solution proposed by Bokir?
I am experiencing exactly the same problem after upgrading to Mavericks with the Huawei E220 modem.
The connection is established for a few seconds, but no data is transfered, and the connection is then closing automatically.
I left the modem plugged in and the Vodafone software set to Automatic, and after numerous attempts and 10 to 15 minutes, it appeared that the connection was finally established.
That is of course no way to work.
After running the VMB uninstaller, there are still a lot of stuff in library cache & preference folder that are pertaining to VMB and not removed.
It is also strange that after uninstalling and reinstalling the VMB software, I am not requested to enter my pin code to establish a connection.
It is obvious that there must be some other VMB files (probably corrupted) somewhere in the system that are not removed by the uninstaller.
I have another macbook pro running VMB without problem and I am really afraid to install Mavericks on this laptop because of this issue.
    Thanks again for any feedback.

  • HT4262 What do I have to do to my Apple Extreme to switch it from a DSL broadband modem to a cable modem?

What do I have to do to my Apple Extreme to switch it from a DSL broadband modem to a cable modem?

Did you do the factory reset of the AE?? That is necessary. The AE keeps too many values from the last setup to easily move to a new configuration.
The quick method of factory reset.
Please look at Time Capsule (TC) as the same thing as the Extreme.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
The power cycle of the cable modem is very important.. it has to be off completely for 20min and sometimes longer.. overnight. Some battery backup version modems do not go off without removing the battery.. even unscrew the coax cable.
Make sure when you power up the modem only the AE is plugged in. Make sure the AE is set to router mode.. DHCP + NAT.. and is plugged in WAN port to the LAN port of the modem.
If you keep having trouble post again..
We need to know the model of the AE and firmware it is running.
Also what version utility on what OS you are setting it up from.

  • Sno Leopard does not compatible to my broadband modem

    Dear Sir or Madam,
Last month, I made the new Snow leopard installed in my mac book pro as advertised that we can go faster with it. Having had the SL installed I could not start browsing using my broadband modem.
Then I brought it to my ISP provider and found that it is not compatible with my broadband. The same answer I got from the reseler technician, and so I have to uninstall it and return it back to the previous one, Mac Os 10.5.8.
Lucky for me I have made a back up prior the installation but not for the Mail, I lost all the contacts and mails. So I have to take the address in contact from my iphone.
Please do necessary upgrade on this since I believ some of the users may have been facing the same problem. Thanks and regards, Aryanto Ramli from Jakarta, Indonesia.

    Problem solved.
In reading another thread, noticed a simiar problem. In pairing, I ignored the fact that neither uconnect nor the phone detected each other, and entered the default PIN "0000"into Uconnect. Once entered things began to proceed - Uconnect and the iphone5 detected each other and the rest proceeded as normal.
