Bridge CS4 assigning tags

I think I am in the right place to ask this question. I got Bridge, I guess as I stumbled upon it a few months ago, with Photoshop Elements 8. It is EXACTLY what I have been looking for as I have over 1000 photos to organize and scan in. They are old photos, not photos that will be transfered from a camera (as many of the titorials concentrate on).
Because I have so many photos that I have been working on over the years, I have photos scattered, many duplicate photos that are the same format, and many that are duplicates with both TIFF and JPG formats, over a few hard drives and folders. I realize that I may not be able to do what I am about to ask over differant hard drives but I but it can be done over images on the same drive.
As I take a folder and tag each photo, I find the same photo coming up in another fold that is the same or had been edited or is in another format. I don't really want to delete until I have everything tagged and make sure I don't need it before deleting. Is there any way to bring up all images on a hard drive, regardless of what folder it is, sort them by name, and then I can "group" tag them (except for such things as format and editted or not editted)? This way I wont have to tag them over and over each time I tackle another folder.
Hope this is clear and I would certainly appreciat any pointers anyone may have.
Thanks,
Jim

You are probably in the right place...
I understand your point, since I had about the same problem last years with about 2 000 old scanned family pictures gathered from various family members. Unfortunately I cannot help you with Bridge, as I am a Windows and Organizer user.
In your case, the original drive and folders organization seem to be more of a problem than a helpful tool.
If you could move all your files to a single drive/folder, do you really think alphabetical sorting would help ?
I rather think that to 'group'  similar photos you'll have to use content and visual similarity to use keywords.
I could help you (or other people with the same problem) with the organizer, but I don't know if this would provide the pointers you are looking for.
Things you can do in the Organizer:
-  move all files to a single master folder in a chosen drive (via backup/restore)
- stack (group) files even from different folders/drives
- index by visual similarity
- face recognition
- export with renaming scheme (Windows)
- smart tagging based on multicriteria searches

  • Web Gallery in Bridge CS4 not working

I've just started using the Web Gallery function in Bridge CS4. The output previews just fine, and loads perfectly from local disk in my browser. When I upload to my webspace, I get just a blank page.
I have contacted my ISP, who say that the problem lies with the Index.html file. They have run it through a validator at W3.org, and it comes back with multiple errors. i have no idea how to fix these errors, and in any case can't understand why it loads just fine from my hard drive, but not from my webspace.
Has anyone here had a similar issue?
    Thanks

Yeah, and I don't see a 'show file names' box on the templates I've looked at.
What I did was go into the group.xml file and I could find the TITLE tags and changed those to what I wanted for my caption.
Still seems somethings not right, since I had to manually add them.

  • Why not use Bridge CS4 with PsCS3?

I will post this on both the Bridge and Ps User-to-User forums as it applies to both.
I have PsCS3 and PsCS4 installed side by side in the default folders assigned by Adobe but have shifted my Bridge CS4 Cache (containing all the thumbnails and previews) from C:Documents and Settings\etc to a subfolder within My Documents, which I had previously moved to my F: drive - my main data drive.
I have found Bridge CS4 to be much more stable than Bridge CS3. Additionally, Bridge CS4 has certain features which make it more attractive and easier to use than Bridge CS3. I want to use Bridge CS4 in conjunction with PsCS3 until Adobe has sorted out the problems with PsCS4 - which at the moment is simply unuseable on my rather old and humble system.
On my system, I seem to be able to use Bridge CS4 with PsCS3 without any problems detected so far. I even have things set up such that any JPEG, TIFF or PSD file double clicked within Bridge CS4 or within Windows Explorer (Win XP Pro SP3) automatically opens the file in PsCS3 and not PsCS4 (provided, of course, that PsCS4 is not itself already running). Furthermore, even with PsCS3 running beside Bridge CS4, from within Bridge CS4 I can open any RAW, JPEG or TIFF file in Camera Raw 5.1 and use its new features (Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter, extra vignetting capabilities, etcetera) which were not available in the last release of Camera Raw (4.6 I think) associated with PsCS3. The only problem comes when trying to open edits made in Camera Raw 5.1 in PsCS3 using the "Open Image" button in ACR - it does nothing/won't work, this is, it won't open the image with the ACR adjustments in PsCS3. That's not a big deal for me - as I am currently not doing any work within ACR (any version) and if I needed to I could simply save the ACR edits and then open the files in PsCS4, save the files as PSDs and then open them in PsCS3 to finalise them there.
Has anyone else had a similar experience, or does anyone else know of any reason(s) why I should not continue to use this workflow, at least in the short term?

I've been away. Thanks John, Bart and Buko for your responses. Think you misunderstood my post Bart, but it does not matter now. John got the correct message. Buko: of course CS3 cannot use ACR 5.x - that was implicit in my post.

Pse 8 and Bridge cs4 seems to work okay here on mac os x 10.9.4 mavericks.
The only trouble i've had is with the output module in bridge cs4, which has crashed on occasion.

  • Bridge CS4 Search Not Displaying NEF Files + Keyword Problems

Hello, I am hoping someone can be of service to peculiar problem that apparently nobody else has had.
I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar
    file.
Two days I ago I changed something in Preferences->Metadata and the next time I started Bridge CS4 and used the loupe tool on a NEF
file, it took longer than usual for the preview to come up and when it did, it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw. I quit the program and the next time I started Bridge, it crashed upon using the loupe tool. I looked up help on Adobe's website and it appeared I had corrupted preferences. Per Adobe's instructions I option clicked at Bridge startup to delete the preferences and purge the cache.
Everything appeared to be normal until today when I searched for a keyword and got 36 random results when I know I have hundreds of
photos tagged with that particular keyword. I started typing in other keywords and getting the same sort of results- very limited numbers of photos I have hundreds of. I always include all subfolders in all searches and used every search method available through Bridge to no avail. The searches always came up with a fraction of the photos I actually have tagged.
I then verified and repaired all disk permissions from the operating system installation CD and Bridge started returning results as
usual. However, when I clicked on an individual file in the Content pane, some of my Keywords started to appear in italics below the rest of my Keyword tree. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why some images will return the Keywords normally and others in italics. Also, sometime the italicized keyword tree will include keywords I edited due to typos and thus no longer existing my normal Keyword tree. I gave the "Make Persistent" command a try. It converts the italics to regular case, but it also doubles the tag so I now have two of that tag (one in the normal keyword tree, and the now converted italics keyword tree.)
Now I'm noticing that all my search results are not including NEF files; just JPEG and the occasional DNG file that I made through Adobe Camera RAW. I'm not sure if this has been the case throughout my problem or if I just noticed it late.
Regarding not displaying NEF files in searches, it appears that it will default to displaying JPEG if it has the option because as of lately I have only been shooting RAW and some of those files are showing up in the still-wonky searches (still displaying random or no photos of keywords.) However, if I manually navigate to a file, I can open and edit NEF files with no problem, they just don't display in any search modes.
Here's two short videos of what happens when I navigate a folder with NEF files by manually searching:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDjUDZzULKQ
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9HkDK7DCs
When I click on a NEF file, the one ahead of it in Content view processes into a more contrasty image and the loupe tool previews jump between 100% and 400% and then change to 100% when dragged or they just process themselves right then and there.

I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
Snow Leopard and Bridge CS4 do have some issues. Some have no problems and others have much problems I'm afraid.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar file.
To my knowledge the keywords are written into the XMP Metadata that is saved in the IPTC section of file itself, the XMP data in the sidecar file contain the changes you made in ACR. In other words, the keywords you have added should still be there.
Also see this Knowledge Base article about Keywords:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402660.html
Two days I ago I changed something in Preferences->Metadata and the next time I started Bridge CS4 and used the loupe tool on a NEF file, it took longer than usual for the preview to come up and when it did, it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%.
Changes metadata in prefs only affects the visability of the fields in the metadata panel. put or deselect a checkmark in front of an option will let you see or not see the field in this panel, the actual data and fields ar still in the file.
it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw.
You can change the magnification for the loupe to 100 / 200 / 400 and 800 % using the scrollwheel or with loupe active the + and - keys. Bridge shows the settings that you made in ACR. If you have changed the default Camera Raw setting it will also change the thumbs for this file. A thumbs needs some time to be cached. First it shows with a black border around, when first cached it shows the embedded preview and in the second round it renders the ACR settings and High Quality preview (if you have not disabled this setting). Caching needs some time.
Everything appeared to be normal until today when I searched for a keyword and got 36 random results when I know I have hundreds of photos tagged with that particular keyword. I started typing in other keywords and getting the same sort of results- very limited numbers of photos I have hundreds of. I always include all subfolders in all searches and used every search method available through Bridge to no avail. The searches always came up with a fraction of the photos I actually have tagged.
Maybe you need to let the indexing in find do its work again but it might also be a snow leopard issue. Try an other app (Digital Asset Management like Expresion Media or  Portfolio) to check about the keywording and find. You can use a trial version for several days. You have several options to use find keywords. In the panel itself, in the filterpanel uner the keyword tab, when clicking on a visible keyword it only shows the files with that keyword or in the menu Edit / find (shortcut cmd + F) explore the options in this menu and also choose include non indexed and let Bridge start to index your files again.
    Don't know about that.
Here's two short videos of what happens when I navigate a folder with NEF files by manually searching:

As you can see the black border around some file that disappear after a while or when you select them they have not been cached. You used purge cache so most of your earlier cached results are gone and need to rebuild.

  • Bridge CS4 - I still can't move keywords for stock photos

    I'm on a Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, 4G RAM.
I buy a lot of stock photos. The stock photo companies have thoughtfully assigned a bunch of keywords to the photos, sometimes in other languages that I don't really speak. Photos.com is notorious for applying keywords that have nothing to do with the photo, as evidenced my my searches for certain keywords. I wish they'd all stop doing this.
When these photos are opened, their keywords appear under "Other Keywords." I can make the keyword permanent under "Other Keywords," but I am unable to drag the keyword(s) into the main keyword list in an effort to GET RID OF this "Other Keywords" list.
I was hoping this was addressed in Bridge CS4, but of course it wasn't...UNLESS...
someone here knows how to do it?

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

  • Import BRIDGE collections + picture tags into Lightroom 3

    Hi everybody
I am just evaluating LIGHTROOM 3.3 and I have CS4 Design Premium Package including BRIDGE CS4. NowI have a huge amount of picture and gave them a lot of picture tags like stars and colors etc and I have several COLLECTIONS under Bridge (NAME.filelist).
How do I get all the COLLECTIONS and picture TAGs of my BRIDGE environment into Lightroom?
    Does anbody have an idea?
Thanks in advance and merry X-mas to all of you
    Georg

    Hi WW,
thx a lot for your help.
regarding collections I found the following article here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3196896#3196896
Your help regarding tags is surely helpful and solve the problem, but it is only a work-around.
For my understanding the three products out of one house (PhotoShop Elements Organizer, Bridge and Lightroom) doing about the same, should ...
work the same (same idea, same behaviour, organizing by path/subfolders instead of cataloges etc.)
maintain the same database and files (LR should recognize the collections from BR and Vice Versa, use the same cache files etc.) and should
be compatible to each other (e.g. Tags, Collections etc)
This is not pointing at you WW  , I hope someone of the ADOBE Developer team is reading this!!
    Actually I suggest ADOBE
to eliminate Organizer and integrate the good functions into BRIDGE.
give BRIDGE as the free of charge picture organizer to PS Elements and to PS CS
change LIGHTROOM into an payable upgrade of BRIDGE with enhanced functionality of the free of charge BRIDGE
better integration of PSE, PS CS and Lightroom
Beside that I suggest to get rid of the Catalog idea of Lightroom with it's import/export and synchronization needs and instead use or at least integrate the idea of BRIDGE to get pictures structured and organized by path and subfolders, as this is anyhow how the pictures are stored already for most of us. I doubt that anybody just throw all files into one big subdirectory and get the organized into cataloges. But please keep collections as they are helpful to quickly collect some pictures to commonly work on them. by drag & drop
    Thanks
Merry X-Mas and a Happy New Year
    Georg

  • Bridge CS4 desaturating thumbnails

Approximately 1 second or less after opening Bridge CS4 it slightly desaturates the colours of the thumbnails - this is especially noticeable with greens. When any image is then opened in PsCS4 it contimues to display the desaturated colours.
I have compared this bebaviour with Bridge CS3 and PsCS3 where it does not happen, as far as I can tell, because the amount of desaturation is fairly subtle.
This all started 2 days ago just after I replaced my el cheapo Philips B190B monitor (which nevertheless displays wonderful colours :1280x1024 pixels and probably a fairly narrow  gamut approximating sRGB) with an NEC 2690WUXi2 (1920x1200 displaying 97.8% of AdobeRGB 1998). There may be no connection but I thought that I should mention it.
All images were produced in Ps within the sRGB Working Space and were duly tagged with the sRGB profile. The problem persits even though I have switched back to the Philips monitor. Both monitors were calibrated and profiled with the iOneD2 puck and the latest Gretag software.
Anybody else experienced this, or have any idea what may be happening?

When Bridge first finds an image, it displays an icon or a thumbnail built in to the image file, if available. If Bridge is set to show high quality thumbnails, it will then go about rendering its own version of the image thumbnail, using whichever program necessary. This usually takes a fraction of a second to a few seconds per image, depending on content.
Bridge is a colour-managed application. Basically, it understands document colour profiles and display device profiles, and adjusts colour output accordingly. Sometimes this doesn't happen straight away—there may be a delay after thumbnails are updated, or you might need to force the display profile adjustment by minimising and maximising the window. But, if pictures still don't display their colours correctly, there could be one of two reasons: the images were not recorded correctly, or the computer/software is not set up correctly.
Assuming (!) your pictures have been made correctly, this leaves your computer set-up. If you are displaying JPEG or PSD images, the problem will probably be down to incorrect calibration and profiling of your monitor. Jumping to a wide-gamut monitor can be a bit of a culture shock, and you notice just how many Windows programs are not colour-managed. You need to be sure that your monitor has been properly calibrated and you are using the correct display profile. You also need to be sure that no other software is interfering with this process, like gamma adjusters and display driver utilities.
Raw images are different, in that there is no such thing as an out-of-the-camera look, only the embedded thumbnail, which is recorded according to the camera's own develop settings (but if you wanted that look, you wouldn't be shooting raw!). Adobe Camera Raw defaults can (and should) be adjusted to your own taste, and this will have a big effect on the appearance of high quality thumbnails in Bridge. If your defaults are poor, your thumbnails will be poor too.
Desaturated colours are often the result of displaying a wide-gamut source with a small gamut profile, e.g. displaying an Adobe RGB source with an sRGB profile. The opposite can happen with wide-gamut monitors and non-colour-management-aware programs, and you get garish colours on your expensive new monitor.

  • Has bridge cs4 a database?

    Hi
    has bridge cs4 a database?
i mean i can tag photos and rating, photos in different folders and different hard disk
well if i want to see all the photos rated 5 star , can i do it?
with bridge cs3(it has not a dabase) i had to use the search tool or set the filter and browse the folders
but this with cs3 overload the cpu because every time scan photos for the info
well with bridge cs4 can i do it , has  a database , or also cs4 has to scan every time all the photos?
my last question is can i make a filter and save it , i mean use the same filter every time brigde cs4 start up
for example filter ->files jpg and raw files , save this filter (i tried to make a scipt ,but i was not able to do it)
and every time bridge cs4 start up ,works with this filter?
    thanks to all
    have a nice day

Bridge does have a database, but Bridge is designed to work as a browser. It doesn't catalog files.
You're better off asking these questions in the Bridge forums, as well.

  • Photoshop CS4 - File Type Associations and Bridge CS4

I have both Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop Elements 7.0 installed on my PC running Windows Vista Home Premium, I removed Photoshop CS3 after installing CS4. The issue I have is that if I look at file associations in Bridge CS4 under Preferences, none of the file types are set to Photoshop CS4, they are set to either Explorer or Photoshop Elements 7.0. The even stranger thing is also that if I try to change the associations, Photoshop CS4 is not even displayed as an option, as Photoshop Elements 7.0 always is, I have to browse in order to find it. This works, but I find it strange. Also within Windows none of the file associations are set to Photoshop CS4 after installation, I have to change them manually, again by browsing for it. I remember that in previous installs of Photoshop there was the possibility to change or use default file associtions, does CS4 have this? I guess this is not really a problem, but I find it somewhat strange that Elements 7.0 is always offered as an option but not CS4 and makes me feel it hasn't installed properly. Anyone have any ideas?

CCleaner did the trick for me too!
But I still suspect something about CS4 installer is not right.
Under CS3 I used Vista "open with">"choose program">"always use" to assiciate bridge CS3 with my canon camera raw files.. At that time it did work.
After installing CS4, I wanted to do the same with bridge CS4 but it didnt work. In the "choose program" vista menu, whatever I was doing, I couldnt select bridge CS4 it was always comming back to photoshop cs4 or bridge cs3.
After using CCleaner, I could re-associate the way I want right away.
So my word to photoshop's installer developper: please try to reproduce this issue, it should be easy, and make the installer avoid this.
    Thanks

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 will not launch ACR

I'm getting this message when trying to open an image from Bridge CS4 in ACR,
"Camera raw requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature"
Any ideas how to cure this, I've downloaded the update 5.2.2., what is the correct location for this? Automatic update is just opening a box withe file in and I cant find the previous.
By the way ACR opens fine from Photoshop CS4.
    Thanks
    Philip James

    Philip:
This has been discussed in the Camera Raw Forum: you may need to install the new ACR 5.2 plug-in in the correct place manually.

  • How to view individual art board in Bridge CS4?

    Hi.
Can somebody tell me how to configure the Adobe Bridge CS4 so that it shows/views/displays individual art boards (that I can scroll thru) and NOT the whole *.ai file (which contains ALL the art boards)?
I want to preview the individual art boards as a larger image, and when they all appear together in the *.ai file, they appear smaller.
At the bottom of this page:
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/illustrator/articles/lrvid4016_ai.html
    it says;
"To view documents, open Adobe Bridge and select an Illustrator document from the Content panel. A larger view of the document appears in the Preview panel located to the right of the Content panel. When viewing an Illustrator file with multiple artboards, click the right-facing arrow below the preview to display each of the artboards."
I do not have this arrow, so therefore no option. On my bridge, all artboards appear together. How do I separate them and get the arrow he is talking about?
    TIA.

Interesting, looks like you also need to save the file with Create PDF Compatible File checked in the Illustrator options dialog when saving - the sample files were saved without PDF compatibility, so no individual artboard preview.
I resaved the sample file In the Cradle of the Deep with Create PDF Compatible File checked, and it shows the artboard previews individually.

  • Can not open Camera Raw in Bridge CS4, or see thumbnails

    MacBook Pro
    OS 10.5.5
    Photo Shop CS4 version 11
    Camera Raw 5.2.0.65
I had another version of Camera Raw from PS3. When I bought the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, I deleted the old camera raw plug in, so as to not conflict with the new camera raw plug in.
When I open PS4, click Photoshop, click about plug in, ONLY one version of Camera Raw comes up.
In OS 10, when I click GO at the top, then applications, then Adobe Photoshop CS4, then Plug Ins, then File Formats, I get two Camera Raw icons: a blue lego like icon that says "Camera Raw.plugin" and another icon that looks like the Macintosh HD icon, but is labeled "CameraProfiles.dmg"
The problem is that I can't open files in Camera Raw when in Bridge CS4, nor can I see the little photo thumbnails either.
    Can someone please help?
    Desperate in NYC.

The Photoshop folder is NOT the correct location for the Camera Raw plug-in, since several versions of Photoshop.
The correct location, is, as described in the readme and in the FAQ of this very forum [hint]:
Mac: [root of your hard disk, NOT your user folder's library]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS4/File Formats/
