Bridge CS4 Odd Hyperlink Behaviour In WinXP Pro

After I upgraded to Photoshop CS4 I configured Bridge to start on log-in under the Preferences, Advanced menu. Later I found that clicking on any hyperlink in another application, such as Microsoft Outlook or even from the Control Panel, Windows Update hyperlink, there would be a delay of as much as 60 seconds in bringing up a copy of IE7, if IE7 was NOT already running.
After pulling my hair out chasing "problems" in IE7 I found that the problem was caused by Bridge CS4 running in the background. When I unchecked the Start on Log-in box in Bridge Advanced Preferences and did a WinXP restart, the hyperlinks started working again.
Has anyone observed similar hyperlink problems or know how to fix this problem?
Bill

Can you determine what Bridge might be doing in the background? If it is pointed at a folder with many image files it might be generating preview images -- a processor intensive operation. This could be even more so if the images were camera raw files. A program launch request would be competing with Bridge for the CPU.
With Bridge running in the background, bring up the task manager with Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look at CPU usage in the performance tab. If it is high, exit bridge and see if it goes down.
Should you determine that the running Bridge is taking most/all of the CPU, then relaunch Bridge and see what Bridge might be doing: Is it pointed to folder with a lot of images to generate previews? Are preview generation options set to give Bridge a lot of processing work?
Look at what Bridge's Folders panel is pointing to. Is it a folder or folder hierarchy with many images? Click on View in Bridge and uncheck Show Items from subfolders if it is checked. (You might have Bridge pointed to My Pictures and trying to render and cache all the images there there.) Navigate Bridge to an empty folder. Does this reduce CPU usage (in the task manager display)?
Look at options for thumbnail quality and preview generation. Make sure Generate 100% Previews is not checked.

  • Odd hyperlink behaviour in Firefox

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing problems with hyperlinks in webhelp running on Firefox?
I have created a new webhelp system - nothing clever such as merging - just 70 or so topics. The help contains hyperlinks to other topics in the webhelp - these are left to page default (the intention being that they should open and replace the current page).
I have published the help to my C drive and am running it from there. When I select a link to another topic, the target topic opens for a second, then the help jumps to the parent folder for that topic. I just tried another webhelp system that I created a week ago (and was fine then) and it shows the same behaviour.
When I do exactly the same in IE, it works as expected.
I'm using Robohelp 7, Firefox 3.6 (it was the same with Firefox 3.5.7 so  I tried upgrading) and Vista (though I tried on a Mac and it's the same, so I've ruled out an operating system quirk).
I'm guessing this is down to a recent Firefox update...or have I just done something daft?

Well, curious indeed! It now seems to be fixed.
The sample file was fine, so that put paid to my Firefox ranting.
I was checking the generate settings for anything that might be relevant, and noticed that it was set to synch TOC automatically. I changed this to synch manually and published again - it worked fine in Firefox. I then set it back to synch automatically and generated again, and it is still fine.
I then repeated the above with an older webhelp system that was OK last week but not today, and it seems to have fixed that too.
Thus my highly technical conclusion is that the TOC got its knickers in a twist.
Many thanks for your help Peter - I now have the sample files in case of future turmoil...

  • Bridge CS4 memory problems

I am repeatedly receiving a "Bridge is running low on memory, it is recommended you restart Bridge" message when using the loop to view CR2 files from a Canon 5D Mk2. Bridge CS4 (3.0.0.464), MacBook Pro 2.5ghz duo, 4 GB ram, OSX 10.5.5. Anyone have any advice?

I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help. Try it anyway, though.

Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.

    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 causes Blue Screen of Death! Help?

    Can anyone help?
I keep getting a Blue Screen of Death every so often when I am using Adobe Bridge CS4 and another program, either Photoshop or Bryce or Cinema4D.
When I have been working in the other program for a while and attempt to return to Bridge, the instant I click on the bridge icon in the low taskbar, the PC blue screens and everything dies instantly with no time to read the blue screen or to take a photo of it, never mind do anything useful like save the file I was working on.
I have winXP Pro and an NVidia Ge Force 8800 GTS graphics card. (both are up to date)
I recently got the Adobe updates but there wasn't one for Bridge.
Buckets full of memory: 289GB free on the C drive and I store most (work) things on my F drive which is a terrabyte with 315 gigs free.
Um.... dunno what else to say.
    Except:  HELP!!!

Well, I don't find that the magnifying glass ability is all that much help to me as often what you see in that magnified area is too blurry to be of any use - my eyes aren't wonderful with small things (including small text - I therefore have the text on all the machines I use set to quite large, browser included) so I like large thumbnails too, and usually I find that the big thumbnails are sufficient for me to find what I want.
So that's not been the cause of my BSOD.
By the way what's "ralentize"?  Is it like "pixilate"?
On the BSOD - it sounds to me that there can be more than one cause in Bridge of the BSOD, so it sounds as if Bridge CS4 - is just not stable, period.
The fact that Bridge in CS3 and CS2 worked just fine is a good indicator of this, (to me anyway) as most people seem to be saying so.
I wouldn't like to rely on NVidia's next update fixing this, as I've already updated NVidia once since this began and it didn't help, I now hear that there's now another update out for the NVidia Ge Force 8800 GTS (which is what I have in my PC), so I will be updating that when I get back, but as the last update didn't fix it, I doubt if this one will either, I think it's something that Adobe will have to sort out, but I doubt if they will.
So it looks like those of us with that graphics card are just left without being able to use Bridge properly - if at all.
I've given up on it on my PC and so I'm refusing to use it on my Laptop either, since it would be silly to get so used to it that I can't work without it.
I have tried using Irfanview, but it's functionalitly is comparably limited.  So I'm looking out for something else.
I don't at the moment have PhotoshopCS4 on the laptop and as I left the box with the program in it in my room at Uni I can't install it on the laptop with its different Graphics card (although still an NVidia it's a Ge Force Go 6800, not the 8800 Gts), until I get back next week... not that I really want to, if it's just going to crash the laptop like it does the PC.
I do have Corel's Paintshop Pro Photo X2 on here, but I don't use it anything like as much as I do Photoshop, but at least the Bridge or Browser (they call it "Organiser") on that doesn't kill the entire computer, although it does take up room on the screen instead of opening as a whole new window.
Also PaintShopPro does not save an inferior version of the image when saving as BMP, which I've noticed does now happen with Photoshop CS4 (when comparing .psd or pspimage with bmp).
    emirkill,
I will also try the "enable software rendering" when I get back, that you've used, in case that helps.

  • Problem with Bridge CS4 reading/editing XMP metadata added in Bridge CS6

Please excuse me if this is a dumb/obvious question. I did try searching the forums for similar problems and didn't find anything that seemed to speak to my issue.
I'm having a problem where Bridge CS4 won't read/edit xmp metadata (specifically, keywords and descriptions in the IPTC panel) that I have entered using CS6. it will read some files, not others. The files are all .mp4s. Of these files, I can read/edit IPTC panel metadata for some of them in Bridge CS4; I can add metadata for all of them in CS6. I see no particular pattern in these files to explain what is and isn't read/editable in CS4.
My question is whether this is a compatibility issue between different versions of CS (in this instance, CS4 and CS6). i know it's a tired refrain to blame software when it could easily be user error, in which case I'd be frankly delighted to know what i'm doing wrong. Please bear with me as I give a few more details.
I'm using macs. I've tried this on multiple systems - for instance, on a mac pro 3 which for some reason has both CS4 and CS6 installed, i can add and edit keywords using CS6, but not when using CS4. Again, in CS4, some .mp4 files read/edit, others do not.
Bridge CS4 blames the files and tells me that the selected file cannot store xmp metadata, and that the properties cannot be modified. To be specific, in the metadata panel it says "this property cannot be modified"; in the keyword panel, it says, "This file (zzz.mp4) cannot store xmp metadata. No changes will occur." This seems odd, because I'm able to add xmp metadata for the same files in CS6 on the same computer, and other computers. I know this problem would disappear if all our computers were using CS6 (or CC), but unfortunately that's not a possibility at the moment. Some of them only have CS4.
Computer details (not an exhaustive list, but two instances): mac pro 3.1 running snow leopard, 16GB memory; macbook pro 4.1 running snow leopard, 4GB memory; adobe bridge cs6 (5.0.0.399) and cs4 (3.0.0.464).
    Things I have tried:
Permissions - the files are set to read/write for everyone. Given that I can add/edit metadata in CS6, it doesn't seem to be a permission issue.
Purging the cache - other users seem to have had problems adding metadata in Bridge CS4 where purging the cache for affected files solved the problem. Didn't work in this instance.
Upgrading all affected computers to CS6/CC is beyond my control. I need to figure out why CS4 won't let me read/add/edit xmp metadata, if only for the sake of understanding the broader implications for interoperability.
Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    adobe bridge cs6 (5.0.0.399) and cs4 (3.0.0.464).
Without having experience with mp4 files and metadata my observation is that you certainly have not updated Bridge CS6 ( should be 5.0.2.4) and I believe also not the latest version of CS4, can't imaging this also stayed at .0.0 so first try to update both.
And if CS4 can read the data of some files it should be capable of reading them all. Be sure to have the files completely cached first, can take a while.
Other things to try in CS4 is refresh preferences (hold down option key while restarting Bridge and choose reset prefs).
And also check for hidden cache files using menu view/show hidden files. Sometimes those cache files can be troublesome between versions.
If purge cache did not work and reset prefs also failed consider to also delete Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manual (from user library)

  • Bridge (CS4) refuses to 'see' one of my external hard drives

I have three external hard drives. All are recognised by Bridge. In order to cope with my large collection of images I have installed a fourth - a 1Tb Fujitsu Storagebird.   This is recognised by Photoshop CS4 (all updates applied) (but not if I try Browse in Bridge), by My Computer on Windows, by DxO Pro, even by by IrfanView.   But Bridge plays fast and loose.  I have, on occasion, managed to get it to recognise the drive, but generally I have to struggle, restarting the Fujitsu, refreshing View in Bridge.  Today, however, it is completely refusing to recognise the drive.
    Any ideas?

    Dear Curt,
For a moment there I thought you had the answer.  Sadly, no.  I disabled the Autostart, rebooted. No joy.  Still won't recognise the drive.  A couple of odd things:  as I said, it has on occasion recognised the drive; when I switch on the drive and get the 'What do you want Windows to do?' box there is an entry for 'Download images using Adobe Bridge CS4'.  If I click on that it rushes off and prepares to do that.  So it is aware of the drive.  Finally, Bridge recognises the three other drives.   The 'rogue' drive works with all other programmes
    Is a puzzlement...
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Bridge CS4 search returns No items to display

A find search for "keyword contains" returns a partial list of files using a parent keyword, and returns "No items to display" for specific child keywords missing from the parent keyword "find".
I have deleted and reapplied the keywords in the missing files and reindexed all of my files afterwards.  The same files are still missing from a parent keyword search and from a specific child keyword search.
I upgraded from CS2, and had no similar problems under CS2.  Both CS4 and my OS, WinXP Pro, are updated to date.
    Any ideas?  Thank you.
(I mistakenly posted this to an old similar named problem under the Bridge Mac discussion group; there was no effective solution offered there.)

    Curt,
No difference at first, but, a new observation and resolution.  The suggested Keywords, Find..., search procedure continued to ignore/overlook all of the previously missing files.
Observation:  All of the missing files are contained in one subfolder named, Oregon.  Any Find continues to return no items from this subfolder.
Resolution:  I renamed folder Oregon to Oregonx, created a new folder named Oregon, and copied all files from the old folder, Oregonx, to the new folder, Oregon.
Find under Oregon = No items
Find under Oregonx = all files containing the keyword.
I tested this result by renaming the new folder, Oregon, to Oregon1.  Find under Oregon1 = all files containing the keyword.
Finally, I reran the global Edit, Find..., across all folders = all files containing the required keyword.
    Go figure!
Thank you for the suggestions and persistence.

  • Can not open Camera Raw in Bridge CS4, or see thumbnails

    MacBook Pro
    OS 10.5.5
    Photo Shop CS4 version 11
    Camera Raw 5.2.0.65
I had another version of Camera Raw from PS3. When I bought the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, I deleted the old camera raw plug in, so as to not conflict with the new camera raw plug in.
When I open PS4, click Photoshop, click about plug in, ONLY one version of Camera Raw comes up.
In OS 10, when I click GO at the top, then applications, then Adobe Photoshop CS4, then Plug Ins, then File Formats, I get two Camera Raw icons: a blue lego like icon that says "Camera Raw.plugin" and another icon that looks like the Macintosh HD icon, but is labeled "CameraProfiles.dmg"
The problem is that I can't open files in Camera Raw when in Bridge CS4, nor can I see the little photo thumbnails either.
    Can someone please help?
    Desperate in NYC.

The Photoshop folder is NOT the correct location for the Camera Raw plug-in, since several versions of Photoshop.
The correct location, is, as described in the readme and in the FAQ of this very forum [hint]:
Mac: [root of your hard disk, NOT your user folder's library]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS4/File Formats/

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 pops error when Update Option from Help is launched

    Hi All,
when i m trying to Launch the Update from the help menu of Adobe Bridge it pops-up with a error messge instead of launching update.
    The error says
    Adobe Bridge
Bridge is not in a position to check for updates.
The cause of the error may lie in the fact that an Internet connection can be established or that you are logged in as a user without administrator privileges.
    Ok
Please help what is the probable cause for this.
I have tried disabling the updateoption by
    1) Adding the Enterprise DWORD value in registry HKLM\Software\Adobe\Updater
    2) Adding the "Update" "Suppress" value in "Application.XML.Override" file while installing the CS4 Suite
I am using  Vista Build is the behavioural diff seen on XP n Vista
    Thank You

    Hey
Apologies I dont think I had made myself clear.
I am trying to package Adobe Photoshop CS4 which has Adobe Bridge as a component. As per the company standards, I am suppossed to be deploying this package & installing it using silent setup. Since this is a corporate environment, they do not want any auto updates to be enabled, as well as disable all menu items related to updates. Hence I had checked through the Adobe Support Site and followed the instructions provided by using the Adobe Deployment Toolkit and supressed the updates using the tool.
Inspite of following the steps mentioned in the Deployment Kit and the guides associated with it, I was unable to supress the Updates options that reflects under Help Menu for Adobe Bridge CS4. All the other associated programs like photoshop, Extend Scripts etc the updates are disabled. The problem seems to be only with the Adobe Bridge Update.
I have also tried disabling the update option by
    1) Adding the Enterprise DWORD value in registry HKLM\Software\Adobe\Updater
    2) Adding the "Update" "Suppress" value in "Application.XML.Override" file while installing the CS4 Suite
Inspite of trying the above steps the update option in the menu is still enabled and when I click on the updates menu item I get the following error message.
    Adobe Bridge
Bridge is not in a position to check for updates.
The cause of the error may lie in the fact that an Internet connection can be established or that you are logged in as a user without administrator privileges.
    Ok
    Please advise,

  • Bridge CS4 is slow, slow, slow (so is Photoshop CS4)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+ CPU, 4 GB RAM, Windows XP SP2 32-bit, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card, two 1-TB hard disks with hundreds of GB free
With Bridge CS3 it took less than ten seconds to build the thumbnails of a folder with 85 image files. With Bridge CS4, it takes almost two minutes. Anybody having the same problem?
And where have the preference options for the thumbnail quality gone? I wanted to set the thumbnail quality to 'low' for a speed-up but I cannot. The options just aren't there in the Bridge CS4 preferences dialog ... and it takes forever building those thumbnails one after one, about one per second. And as if that wasn't bad enough already, Bridge CS4 extracts more than hundred thumbnails from only 85 raw image files, according to the text appearing in the status bar next to the spinning radar icon. There is something seriously screwed up.
And Photoshop CS4 is sluggish, too (no matter if Enable OpenGL is on or off).
So by and large, CS4 is a major disappointment. I hope for some updates REAL soon. For now, I am back to CS3. :(

Nope. There is no star icon, no square, and below the workspace options there's the Content pane. Why don't you simply put the thumbnail quality options where they belong and where they always have been?
EDIT: Now I found out what Michelle was talking about: the so-called path bar. Of course I disabled that silly path bar first thing after installing Bridge CS4 so I didn't notice that the UI of one of the most essential settings is located there---and
    i only
there ... even though it has nothing to do with paths. (Suggestion what to do to this UI's designer removed.)

  • WinXp Pro as Virtualbox Guest can't ping router/internet

    Hi:
I am running Arch 64 and installed virtualbox_bin 2.0.4-1 from AUR and guest additions 2.0.2-1 from AUR.
I have installed as a guest os, WinXP Pro and set up bridge networking per
    http://mychael.gotdns.com/blog/2007/05/ … -bridging/.
My Arch host works fine (it can access the internet and ping the guest WinXP Pro). My WinXP Pro guest can ping my Arch host and other local machines on my network. However it cannot ping my router or access or ping the internet.
I log onto the WinXP Pro as the Administrator and I have the firewall disabled, so I don't think it is being blocked on the XP side by anything.
As far as Arch goes, I have tried adding the host name of the WinXP Pro machine to /etc/hosts and put the ip adress of the XP machine into /etc/hosts.allow. Neither of these actions resulted in success. I don't think I have a firewall or other special security measures on my Arch? I just did a fresh ftp install yesterday and did not add ssh or other security measures that weren't included in the default install and the base-devel install.
My search of the forums turned up a similar problem to mine that was solved by removing the firewall in the WinXP guest. I have already done that still without success.
My uneducated guess is that the gateway ip is not getting to the guest. I am using static ip for both the Arch host and the WinXP guest. The WinXP guest says that it is connected and reports no problems. I tried using dhcp on the XP guest but that didn't work either.
Here is the network section of my /etc/rc.conf

    Hi Floris:
    Thanks for the reply.
I originally tried the Arch Way without success, that is why I tried the other way.
However at your suggestion, I have tried the Arch Way again, with the same results. That is I can ping other computers on my network but I can't ping my router nor access the internet from my guest.
Seeing that I have the same problem regardless of which method I use leads me to believe that it must be something simple and obvious that I am doing wrong. But what??! I have no idea.
Any thoughts you have would be much appreciated.

  • Bridge CS4 freezes when I open a folder with avi files

Whenever I navigate to a folder with avi files, Bridge CS4 freezes. I have tried resetting my preferences, changing the file associations, but it still hangs. Both Windows and Bridge are set up to associate avi files with VLC Media Player. The files open and play just fine in VLC. I am running CS4 on a Win XP Pro machine. It used to not be a problem and I could play avi files in Bridge. I'm not sure when the problem started since I don't shoot a lot of video. Any ideas?

Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files

No wonder I think this is Bridge.
That is indeed a tempting thought, have you already tried the refresh preferences for Bridge using ctrl key pressed down while restarting Bridge?
But Bridge is very critical in reacting on odd system behavior, so also keep the advice of Station-Two in mind. On a Mac repairing permissions often solves problems, don't know the PC equivalent of this.

Go to Bridge preferences/Advanced and uncheck Open at login. This is probably the cause.
If this doesn't work, check your account login items. If Bridge is there delete it.
If neither of these suggestions work report back.
