Bridge CS4 - Refining a Saved Search

I conducted a global search and saved it. Looks like a collection now. To refine the collection, I created "Select" labels for the images I wanted to work with, and repeated the search with a new clause "Label includes 'Select'". Fine, got my images. Very cool so far. Saved this sub-selection under a new name.
When I try to open one of the images for editing in Photoshop CS4, the stop sign (circle with diagonal line) appears in Photoshop. Maybe I need open the collection in Photoshop?
How does that work? Open a collection in Photoshop CS4?

Please cancel this message. On second try I was able to edit members of the selection in Photoshop.

  • Bridge CS4 Search Not Displaying NEF Files + Keyword Problems

Hello, I am hoping someone can be of service to peculiar problem that apparently nobody else has had.
I am running Adobe Bridge CS4 (came bundled with Photoshop Elements 8) on a 2009 24 inch iMac with 4GB RAM and a 2.6mHz processor running Snow Leopard v10.6.2.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar
    file.
Two days I ago I changed something in Preferences->Metadata and the next time I started Bridge CS4 and used the loupe tool on a NEF
file, it took longer than usual for the preview to come up and when it did, it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw. I quit the program and the next time I started Bridge, it crashed upon using the loupe tool. I looked up help on Adobe's website and it appeared I had corrupted preferences. Per Adobe's instructions I option clicked at Bridge startup to delete the preferences and purge the cache.
Everything appeared to be normal until today when I searched for a keyword and got 36 random results when I know I have hundreds of
photos tagged with that particular keyword. I started typing in other keywords and getting the same sort of results- very limited numbers of photos I have hundreds of. I always include all subfolders in all searches and used every search method available through Bridge to no avail. The searches always came up with a fraction of the photos I actually have tagged.
I then verified and repaired all disk permissions from the operating system installation CD and Bridge started returning results as
usual. However, when I clicked on an individual file in the Content pane, some of my Keywords started to appear in italics below the rest of my Keyword tree. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why some images will return the Keywords normally and others in italics. Also, sometime the italicized keyword tree will include keywords I edited due to typos and thus no longer existing my normal Keyword tree. I gave the "Make Persistent" command a try. It converts the italics to regular case, but it also doubles the tag so I now have two of that tag (one in the normal keyword tree, and the now converted italics keyword tree.)
Now I'm noticing that all my search results are not including NEF files; just JPEG and the occasional DNG file that I made through Adobe Camera RAW. I'm not sure if this has been the case throughout my problem or if I just noticed it late.
Regarding not displaying NEF files in searches, it appears that it will default to displaying JPEG if it has the option because as of lately I have only been shooting RAW and some of those files are showing up in the still-wonky searches (still displaying random or no photos of keywords.) However, if I manually navigate to a file, I can open and edit NEF files with no problem, they just don't display in any search modes.
Here's two short videos of what happens when I navigate a folder with NEF files by manually searching:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDjUDZzULKQ
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9HkDK7DCs
When I click on a NEF file, the one ahead of it in Content view processes into a more contrasty image and the loupe tool previews jump between 100% and 400% and then change to 100% when dragged or they just process themselves right then and there.

Snow Leopard and Bridge CS4 do have some issues. Some have no problems and others have much problems I'm afraid.
I use Adobe Bridge CS4 to add Keywords to all my photos and edit 14 bit Nikon NEF RAW files. I write the keywords to an .XMP sidecar file.
To my knowledge the keywords are written into the XMP Metadata that is saved in the IPTC section of file itself, the XMP data in the sidecar file contain the changes you made in ACR. In other words, the keywords you have added should still be there.
Also see this Knowledge Base article about Keywords:

Changes metadata in prefs only affects the visability of the fields in the metadata panel. put or deselect a checkmark in front of an option will let you see or not see the field in this panel, the actual data and fields ar still in the file.
it was at 200% magnification instead of 100%. Once the loupe preview showed up, the NEF file had some sort of processing applied to it (it became more contrasted.) This was all within Bridge ant NOT Adobe Camera Raw.
You can change the magnification for the loupe to 100 / 200 / 400 and 800 % using the scrollwheel or with loupe active the + and - keys. Bridge shows the settings that you made in ACR. If you have changed the default Camera Raw setting it will also change the thumbs for this file. A thumbs needs some time to be cached. First it shows with a black border around, when first cached it shows the embedded preview and in the second round it renders the ACR settings and High Quality preview (if you have not disabled this setting). Caching needs some time.

Maybe you need to let the indexing in find do its work again but it might also be a snow leopard issue. Try an other app (Digital Asset Management like Expresion Media or  Portfolio) to check about the keywording and find. You can use a trial version for several days. You have several options to use find keywords. In the panel itself, in the filterpanel uner the keyword tab, when clicking on a visible keyword it only shows the files with that keyword or in the menu Edit / find (shortcut cmd + F) explore the options in this menu and also choose include non indexed and let Bridge start to index your files again.

    Don't know about that.

As you can see the black border around some file that disappear after a while or when you select them they have not been cached. You used purge cache so most of your earlier cached results are gone and need to rebuild.

  • Bridge CS4 is messing up half the files when saved

Basically, my wife is uses Bridge CS4 to edit her photos and a a little bit ago, she acquired a Canon 7D.  Ever since then, around half the images after editing are literally, half messed up (see picture).  I figured it was because her iMac was slowing down and could probably use a fresh install of everything.  Well I re-installed OSX and Photoshop CS4 extended, and yesterday she went to edit images and the same thing was happening.  All updates have been applied, the camera is running firmware vesion 1.25 (the latest).  .  The rest of the system is as follows:
    OSX 10.5.8
    Bridge 3.0.0.464 - (edit)*
    Adobe Camera RAW file 5.7
    iMas (spring 2007)
    Core 2 duo - 2ghz
2gb ram (one DIM is non factory -PNY)
Hard drive has over 200 gigs free space
NOTE:  the photos are not being worked with from the camera.  They are being downloaded to the computer using the standard adobe transfer utility (I cant remember the name).
One last quirk.  If she goes and edits it a second time, and resaves, it always saves the image correctly.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
P.S.  I was just informed by my wife that it does this with photos originally sent to her in CD format as well.

I have detected certain anomalies on bridge and photoshop behavior after working with them during a long time.
You better start using system maintenance. Apple Disk utility comes for free within the utility folder in your default Application folder, start check disk and check and repair permissions.
If your disk needs repair you have to use the original install disk that came with OSX to start up from this disk and then repair your disk.
There should also be at least 10 % free space left on your disk, for some odd reason it does not matter what size the disk is, the 10 % rule is always there
There are some excellent maintenance application that come for reasonable to cheap prices, try a Google search for this.

  • Can't Search PDFs in Bridge CS4??

I was considering using Bridge CS4 to manage my thousands of PDF documents, but have run across a problem on Win 7 64-bit.  Searching the fulltext of PDFs in bridge always yields no documents -- even if I choose to use Windows Search.   I have the proper ifilter set up to do fulltext searches of PDFs, and fulltext search does work if I just use the windows search box from the start menu, but it absolutely does not work work in bridge at all.
    Any idea why?
    thanks

OK, I think I see what you are saying now.
When you click search with Windows on the Bridge toolbar can you see it searching through the folders?
As a test try a search for a metadata item like a keyword and see it the Windows search turns that up.  It may indeed be a bug if the nothing shows up.
Win7 and CS4 were not built to run together and there are still things to fix.  But with CS5 due out shortly, who knows how much effort they will put into that effort.

  • Limiting Bridge CS4 search

My earlier post has been answered but when I did that Bridge crashed...which is not surprising as my computer has been in use for a couple of days with many windows and programs open. So, I rebooted.
In strting Bridge up again and to search my entire drive for images worked fine until I noticed that it was searching and displaing each and every file on my hard drive. I only need the image files. I have been looking to as how I limit it to just image files but am having no luck.
When it brought up all the images the first time, and then crshed, it looked like they were all just image files....unless further down it was searching for others.
    Any pointers would be appreciated!
    JIm

I saw where once all the files are "discovered" you can filter out what you want to see.
As far as your second message, Barbara (and thank you) not sure what "lockfiles" are and haven't sorted that out by searching in Google. I am still working with Snow Leopard (afraid to upgrade, did on one computer and having probs). I had two com.adobe.bridge.plist files which I deleted. I am looking for the folder containing saved state files but haven't found yet.
In looking into how I repair permissions, I found this:
    Tips & Warnings
Disk Utility for Snow Leopard can only verify or repair permissions for Mac OS X 10.6.x disks. Use Leopard to verify or repair permissions for Mac OS X 10.5.
I have SL 10.5.8. Out of Luck? I doubt I even have a Leopard disc for this June '09 MBP.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Exporting PDF in Bridge CS4

When I export a PDF in Bridge CS4 using the output panel (on low quality setting), the file size is much larger than any of the PDF presentations I used to make in Bridge CS2. I've tried reducing the file size of the images that the PDF is made of- but the resulting PDF presentation is still a very large file (20-70 MB). Does anyone know how to reduce the file size of  the PDF when using the output feature (other than specifying 'low quality' and reducing the size of the images)? Bridge CS2 gave a lot more freedom in how the PDF was compressed and created. Thanks!

If you still have the option Low then this means you did not update the Outputmodule. Do a search for it on the Adobe site. With this update you have more and better options (yet still not enough but it is better) for saving.
If you have Acrobat Pro you can also use the option to reduce file size inhere but I don't know an other easy way for the moment (I use this option in Acrobat Pro a lot and it is very good, I create PDF files in 300 dpi and after using reduce a 20 MB file is reduced to 1,5 MB with excellent quality)

  • Can't upload gallery in Bridge CS4 - settings are correct

I am running Bridge CS4 on OS 10.4, 2 gigs of RAM.  I have created several web galleries but can't upload any of them.  If I try saving them to my harddrive and then uploading, I just get a blank shell.  The index works when running from my harddrive, but I just get a shell when running from my server.  When I try to upload directly to my server, I get a "server cannot be found" error. I have quadruple checked my settings, and those same FTP settings work with other programs (Cute FTP and Fetch) so I know that's not the problem.  Why can't Bridge create a gallery and upload it?  I've been having to use Lightroom but I'm just running a trial right now and would like to figure out how to get Bridge to do this before I can't use Lightroom anymore.  Thanks!

Unfortunately I can't tell you what the results of previous discussions were, as I don't deal with the Web; but I do know that this has been discussed here before, so I did a forum search and received these 24 hits.

  • Files edited in Lightroom and displayed correctly in Bridge are not really saved

Hi I used Lightroom 3 to edit pics on a laptop, saved. Transferred the files through explorer to a USB card, copied to my desktop. Opened though Bridge CS4 – the pics were displayed perfectly (as edited). Through explorer however the pics were shown as not edited – so I found out the files were not saved as edited, but the editing info was added to the files. Not too bad but how should I order prints? Or show the pics on a computer where there is not Lightroom nor Bridge? The only method known to me is opening all files in Photoshop and saving the files there. Hell of a job! Please help. Thank you. Dmitry

Not sure what this means.  Where was the editing info added to?
Sometimes using an external drive on can run into permission problems, so the info is not written.  Can this be a reason?

  • How to view individual art board in Bridge CS4?

    Hi.
Can somebody tell me how to configure the Adobe Bridge CS4 so that it shows/views/displays individual art boards (that I can scroll thru) and NOT the whole *.ai file (which contains ALL the art boards)?
I want to preview the individual art boards as a larger image, and when they all appear together in the *.ai file, they appear smaller.
At the bottom of this page:
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/illustrator/articles/lrvid4016_ai.html
    it says;
"To view documents, open Adobe Bridge and select an Illustrator document from the Content panel. A larger view of the document appears in the Preview panel located to the right of the Content panel. When viewing an Illustrator file with multiple artboards, click the right-facing arrow below the preview to display each of the artboards."
I do not have this arrow, so therefore no option. On my bridge, all artboards appear together. How do I separate them and get the arrow he is talking about?
    TIA.

Interesting, looks like you also need to save the file with Create PDF Compatible File checked in the Illustrator options dialog when saving - the sample files were saved without PDF compatibility, so no individual artboard preview.
I resaved the sample file In the Cradle of the Deep with Create PDF Compatible File checked, and it shows the artboard previews individually.

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 vs CS3

    Hello everyone,
I'm taking a class at the college about Photoshop and we are in a chapter
    where we're using Bridge.
The class uses version CS4, but I'm using CS3 (the instructor gave a
thumbs-up to that prior to class). I'm in a place where I can't figure out
how to do it in CS3 and asking your help.
Here's the scenario from the textbook (CS4):
    1. Open Bridge and click on the Folders tab.
--- Like in PS, there is a menu at the top that I don't have in CS3. Same
here in Bridge. After clicking the Folder tab, the book is showing a screen
where there are headings of Essentials, Filmstrip, Metadata, and Output.
    2. Open the .psd file
--- that we were working with earlier in the chapter in PS
    3. Click Output, then click the PDF button, then click Repeat One Photo per
Page check box, then click the Refresh Preview button.
    --- I'm lost!
    4. Scroll down to the Watermark section of the Output panel, click the View
PDF After Save checkbox, then Save.
    --- Still lost!
Before I'm troubling you, I spent about 90 minutes looking through menus,
    Adobe help, and online. Nothing!
So I'm drawing on the experience within the group to tell me if these steps
are possible in CS3 - even if they are not exactly as described above. As in
PS, sometimes the book shows how to do something and I can figure out a
    work-around in CS3.
    Thank you!
    Gil

I certainly agree with John J.  The user interfaces are quite different, and the Bridge Output create  pdf function you are asked to do in Bridge CS4 replaced a CS3 pdf fuction performed from Photoshop CS3 called PDF Presentation.
Here's a series of CS3 steps that gets close to what your CS4 exercise looks to be calling for:
    1. Launch Bridge CS3 and click on the folders tab and navigate to the folder with the pds files for your exercise.  (Ignore the different layout for workspaces et al.)
    2. Select one or more psd files in Bridge (thumbnails in Content panel).
    3.  Still in Bridge, click on Tools > Photoshop > PDF Presentation.  This will launch Photoshop if it not already open and display a PDF Presentation dialog box with some choices.  The top section will list Source Files, which should show the file or files you had selected in Bridge.  In the bottom section Output Options select the Presentation button, and you might click to Include Filename.
    4. Click Save at top of the dialog box.  You should get a Save dialog box.  Select filename and where to save the pdf; then you should see Photoshop's Save Adobe PDF dialog box in which, under General,  you can check View PDF After Saving.

  • Adobe Bridge CS4 causes Blue Screen of Death! Help?

    Can anyone help?
I keep getting a Blue Screen of Death every so often when I am using Adobe Bridge CS4 and another program, either Photoshop or Bryce or Cinema4D.
When I have been working in the other program for a while and attempt to return to Bridge, the instant I click on the bridge icon in the low taskbar, the PC blue screens and everything dies instantly with no time to read the blue screen or to take a photo of it, never mind do anything useful like save the file I was working on.
I have winXP Pro and an NVidia Ge Force 8800 GTS graphics card. (both are up to date)
I recently got the Adobe updates but there wasn't one for Bridge.
Buckets full of memory: 289GB free on the C drive and I store most (work) things on my F drive which is a terrabyte with 315 gigs free.
Um.... dunno what else to say.
    Except:  HELP!!!

Well, I don't find that the magnifying glass ability is all that much help to me as often what you see in that magnified area is too blurry to be of any use - my eyes aren't wonderful with small things (including small text - I therefore have the text on all the machines I use set to quite large, browser included) so I like large thumbnails too, and usually I find that the big thumbnails are sufficient for me to find what I want.
So that's not been the cause of my BSOD.
By the way what's "ralentize"?  Is it like "pixilate"?
On the BSOD - it sounds to me that there can be more than one cause in Bridge of the BSOD, so it sounds as if Bridge CS4 - is just not stable, period.
The fact that Bridge in CS3 and CS2 worked just fine is a good indicator of this, (to me anyway) as most people seem to be saying so.
I wouldn't like to rely on NVidia's next update fixing this, as I've already updated NVidia once since this began and it didn't help, I now hear that there's now another update out for the NVidia Ge Force 8800 GTS (which is what I have in my PC), so I will be updating that when I get back, but as the last update didn't fix it, I doubt if this one will either, I think it's something that Adobe will have to sort out, but I doubt if they will.
So it looks like those of us with that graphics card are just left without being able to use Bridge properly - if at all.
I've given up on it on my PC and so I'm refusing to use it on my Laptop either, since it would be silly to get so used to it that I can't work without it.
I have tried using Irfanview, but it's functionalitly is comparably limited.  So I'm looking out for something else.
I don't at the moment have PhotoshopCS4 on the laptop and as I left the box with the program in it in my room at Uni I can't install it on the laptop with its different Graphics card (although still an NVidia it's a Ge Force Go 6800, not the 8800 Gts), until I get back next week... not that I really want to, if it's just going to crash the laptop like it does the PC.
I do have Corel's Paintshop Pro Photo X2 on here, but I don't use it anything like as much as I do Photoshop, but at least the Bridge or Browser (they call it "Organiser") on that doesn't kill the entire computer, although it does take up room on the screen instead of opening as a whole new window.
Also PaintShopPro does not save an inferior version of the image when saving as BMP, which I've noticed does now happen with Photoshop CS4 (when comparing .psd or pspimage with bmp).
    emirkill,
I will also try the "enable software rendering" when I get back, that you've used, in case that helps.

  • Need help installing Bridge CS4 gallery in DW CS4

I've spent days trying to find out how to put a gallery I created in Bridge CS4 into Dreamweaver CS4. Bridge created a folder filled with a lot of files, including image files and an index.html file. How do I insert these into my DW page? I'm fairly new to Dreamweaver and need the specific steps laid out for me. Thanks.

    Greetings,
Copy the entire folder to your web root in the Dreamweaver CS4 and create a HTML page from your template, name it "gallery" then open the Dreamweaver CS4 if not already opened, click to open the files of your website at the right hand Corner of the Dreamweaver CS4 page or windows > files to open it; search for the folder of the gallery open it and copy the .swf player file to the space you have created on the gallery page save the page then press F12 on your keyboard or file > preview in browser and choose your browser to view your gallery. You could resize it after all that. It worked for me on my new web design. Good luck.
    Best regards,

  • Using CS3 Web Photo Gallery Control Panel in Bridge CS4?

I found where the styles are located in the library, and it doesn't look like the old templates will work with the new Output feature of Bridge. I want to use my old templates from CS3 that I have customized, and would like to use them with Bridge. I have installed the extra Goodies, but they will only work through Photoshop, not Bridge.
Is there a way to have Bridge>Tools>Photoshop bring up the legacy version control panel for the Web Photo Gallery?
    Thank you:)

    Hi Paul,
I'm not a Lightroom user, but the new Web Photo Galleries that come in CS4 are in Bridge. They are Lightroom templates, so there's probably not much difference. I just tried building a gallery in CS4 Bridge with 35 files, and I could not preview more than 10 either through Bridge or in a browser by pressing the preview button. The only way to preview the entire gallery before uploading was by saving the folder, then opening the index file in a browser.
Web Photo Galleries can be created in Photoshop and Bridge CS4 just like they were in previous versions of Photoshop and Bridge. You do need to configure it using the optional Goodies files since it is not part of the initial installation. It's real easy. The link I posted above has more information. Here it is again:
    http://generatex.com/cs4.html
If you do that, you'll have the best of both worlds. You'll have the option of creating web photo galleries with html templates in Bridge or Photoshop CS4, previewing them easily (regardless of size), and have the option of using the new Lightroom flash templates in Bridge CS4.

  • Bridge CS4 image Previews are too small

In Bridge CS4 I cannot get the preview images to display anything larger than a large thumbnail view, see image below.  I have tried all of the Preferences in Edit menu (e.g. Thumbnail: do not process files larger than set to 10,000 MB, cache options are keep 100% previews in cache checked/automatically export cache to folders when possible checked/cache size slider is set to 50%, software render has been checked/unchecked/generate monitor size previews checked).  None of these options change anything for the size of the image preview.  I have a DX10.1 ATI Radeon HD4890 XOC 1GB, so my video card is not the issue.  I am running Windows 7 Ult x64 on ASUS P8P67 Deluxe with 16GB RAM and over 2 TB of HDD space. So my system should not be an issue either.  These are Sample artwork images that were installed with Illustrator cs4.  How do i increase the size of these images?
Also, these images are showing everything in the ai image, not the individual images in each ai file.  How do i get it to show the individual images in each AI file like they were separate images, like Illustrator?

Actually, you just solved both of my problems with your question.  I never thought about how the images were created/saved.
It turns out that for some reason when i re-save the images as version CS4 of course and all options selected in dialog box now the images act correctly and resize accordingly when the separator is moved and will get quite large as they should.
I also had to use my mouse and select each artboard/image inside the file then re-saved with same settings as above to get multiple images to show up with the buttons at bottom of image in preview mode.  Now all is good.
These are the default installed sample artwork images.  Not sure why they were like this, may have been some kind of format/process error. Thanks a lot Curt Y.

  • Bridge CS4 Photo Downloader Date Created

Quick question. When using the Adobe Bridge CS4 Photo Downloader to download pictures from a camera, how do I keep the original shot dates (date created) to show up in the Finder Info. Seems like it's just putting the date modified (downloaded date and time) into the date created.
    Is this a known bug?

    Thanks, John.
I did do a search before posting but didn't find an answer.  My alternate way of doing this is in Unix with a shell script and DCRAW, but in trying to create a standard workflow, I realized this was one place that complicates things.
Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.
