Bridge CS5 Cache Location

What are the advantages and disadvantages of centralized vs. "exported to folders" cache locations in Bridge CS5?
I see in the help section it says something about sharing images across computers.
Other than that, what are the effective differences?
Thanks,
Drew

Have never seen a document laying out exactly how cache works, but this is my understanding.
Central cache is the main cache, and when you select purge this is the one that gets purged.
I use central cache as I believe that if you get a contaminated file you will have to manually delete the cache in all the folders, as purging only affects central cache.  Using central cache may cost time, expecially on folders I rarely use, as the cache may have been deleted and replaced by cache from recently visited folders.  But this depends on how many files you have and where you have the slider set for storage.
Some have reported that haveing distributed cache speeds up loading time for folders.  Distributed cache is an additional cache put on the various folders.   It is useful if you want to send photos to another drive as all the  info is there (XMP files).  Otherwise you have to choose build and  export cache.
Hope this helps.

  • Bridge CS6 cache location

My Master Collection CS6 was installed as administrator under Win 7 x64 Pro .
In CS5 I placed the cache on a non-boot drive.
In CS6, the only cache location options available to me from within Preferences are within my User folder on the boot drive.  I am running as admininstrator, and have tried explicitly running as administrator to no effect.
How can I get the CS6 cache onto the drive of my choice?

Note the current folder and the full path to the folder you want to use for the cache.
    Run regedit.
    Search for Bridge CS6.
Look down the associated keys and locate the folder noted above. Only one place needs changing.
Edit the folder name to read the new location.
Re-start Bridge and check the preferences show the new folder.
Delete the old cache folder (mine was 40+ gigabytes).
Leave Bridge running until it has finished regenerating the cache in the new location.
It might have been quicker to copy/move the old cache to the new location before re-starting Bridge after the location change, but I wasn't sure it would work correctly and was pleased to have a fresh, clean cache.

  • Bridge CS5 Cache

I had assumed that if I compacted the cache, it would remove items that have been deleted. Having just removed about 100 pictures and then compacted the cache, I found that the deleted items are all still in the cache. Do I really have to manually deleted the cache to remove them, or is there another way?
Bridge is configured to keep 100% Previews in Cache

I don't think this is quite correct. The "full" folder only contains a few items from a few directories. Only 5 from a folder of 2000. I have experimented by clicking on files, expanding them to maximum size, but they were not added to the "full" folder.
Then there is something wrong with either your install or your system (or you on Mac or Windows)
The moment I hit the magnifier the image starts to build the 100% preview (I have set quality to always HQ preview and only use 100 % on demand) the file is added to the full folder.
e.g. a 21 MP Canon EOS 1Ds3 file converted to DNG does after normal cache results in 2 jpeg cache files ('filename'.dng.jpg) and after hitting magnifier for 100% in 3 files. With in mind different subjects provide smaller or larger jpeg here the file sizes for this particular file.
    1 in the folder 254 (30 kb)
    1 in the folder 1024 (1,9 MB)
1 in the folder full (6,1 MB)
I have on occasions deleted the cache, but rebuilding the cache with 80,000 items takes some time. This should not even be necessary
Although I'm a big fan of Bridge I keep repeating that using it for DAM on large amounts of files might not be the best idea. I stopped with this DAM use already in CS3 after discovering that Bridge predecessor 'File Browser' (PSCS1) cache files needed replaced by Bridge 1 that came with CS2 and again a new cache method for Bridge 2 in CS3. Bridge CS3 was also very unstable. CS4 had again a new cache as did CS5
CS5 and CS6 seem to share the structure but I'm not sure it is wise to copy the CS5 cache to the CS6 folder and be ready for use.
Also the way chosen for caching is not very suitable for Digital Asset Management to my opinion. The cache file grows to fast to huge proportions (see example above, with 1 21 MP DNG file viewed at 100% the total result is 8 MB data, nearly half the size of its original...)
Searching in Bridge is very slow and the quick search only meant for the folder pointed in the content window.
So after having used both iView Media Pro and Extensis Portfolio as DAM for my archive with keepers (around 60.000 at the moment) I still was not happy and ended up with the single user version of Canto Cumulus.
Canto is very fast in building the cache (only 1 or 2 hours for this amount of files), lightning fast in searching and the total amount of the cache file for this 60.000 files archive is less then 3 GB.
Having used CS6 beta for the past months and about 20.000 files cached this already resulted in a cache file of 25 GB...
Also Bridge is not meant to use over a network, especially multiple users can be very tricky (different libraries on user levels) and we should keep in mind that Bridge still comes for free with PS or other CS suite applications and a real DAM is not free

  • Bridge CS4 Cache Location

I have set the Bridge Cache to go into a folder on my photos drive.  It will work the first time I set it up, but then each subsequent time I launch Bridge, the cache files revert to the root level of the drive, not the specified folder.  Anyone else having this issue?  It's a pain to have to keep deleting those cache files - why won't they go where they are told?

  • Bridge CC cache not compatible with bridge CS6

Starting the Photoshop CC adventure. First install was Bridge. First test was to see if the Bridge CC cache is compatible with Bridge CS6 cache. First result is NO.
      Test method:
      1. Set the Bridge CC cache location to the same folder I use for CS6, which contains 10+ gigs of thumbs for my library.
      2. Navigated Bridge CC to a sub-folder with about 30 images, see Bridge CC re-do the thumb extractions.
      3. Close Bridge CC, launch Bridge CS6, navigate to the same sub-folder, see Bridge CS6 re-do the thumb extractions.
      4. Close Bridge CS6, launch Bridge CC, still pointing to the same sub-folder, see it re-do thumb extractions again.
      5. Repeat steps 3&4, always with same result, a redundant re-generation of thumbs.
      Conclusion:
The actual thumbnail files in the cache are the same. But something happens in the index files (data/store) to make each version think it does not have thumbnails, so it re-generates them. IOW, when Bridge CC looks at the cache last used by Bridge CS6 it says "I have not been here, must re-cache", and visa-versa.
      Solution:
Must let Bridge CC have its own separate cache, so the two versions don't walk over each other. Must let Bridge CC re-cache everything, which for me (and most users I assume) will be a long and time consuming process.
Not much surprise here. The same was true for CS5 vs. CS6.

Not much surprise here. The same was true for CS5 vs. CS6.
Then it also should not be a surprise for you that this behavior already started in the Filebrowser (Bridge predecessor that came with CS1 and by far the most stable and fast cache ever in the history of Bridge) and has not changed since. Nor is it likely it will chance in the future.
Hence my advice to not use Bridge for long term DAM because you need to recache the lot every new version...

  • Managing Bridge's Cache?

Adobe Bridge is not perfect by any means. However, I have gotten used to it. I use it for a lot of things including managing my photography files. Being the pack-rat that I am, I usually don't throw away much. My problem is that the Cache for my Adobe Bridge is reaching 80gb.
Is there a better way of managing my cache to minimize excessive hard drive space?

    >is there anyway to select what I want to keep in my cache and what not needs to be there?
You didn't say which version of Bridge you're running. I don't know that you cna selectively manage in Bride CS3.  You can for the Bridge CS4 cache via windows file management (Windows Explorer).
    Bridge CS4 cache location:
      c:/Document and Settings/user-name/Application Data/Adobe/Bridge CS4/Cache
Here you will find folders /256, /1024, and /full that contain folders of cache data (jpg files) that correspond to your image file folders.  You can delete any of these cache folders of jpegs, though Bridge will recreate its cache if needed; that is, the next time you navigate to one of your image folders.  The greatest amount of disk space reclamation will be obtained from deleting undesired cache folders from the </full> set and only enabling Bridge's Generate 100% Previews when you want them (to prevent regeneration of full size previews when you navigate Bridge to the older folders).

  • Unable to change Bridge CS5.5 Cache location to other than c:\user\

For some reason, I am unable to change the Cache location of Bridge CS5.5 outside of my c:\user\ folder. Other drives in the system are not seen by Bridge. This was not the case before. I used to have it in a different dedicated drive. I reset the preferences, deleted the cache but still they do not help. Please help, as my C: Drive is a SSD with limited space and contains OS only! There is no problem with PS or PR, only Bridge.

If it worked before what did you change?
I know there are some problems in Bridge with users relocating temp file to so place other than C drive.  Known bug.
Here is a link with similar situation.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/760369

  • Bridge CS5 using CS4 files cache problem

If I use Bridge CS4 on a directory and subsequently open the same  directory with Bridge CS5, Bridge insistes on rebuilding thumbnails and  previews (as indicated on the bottom status line).    If I subsequently reopen the directory in Bridge CS4, it  again rebuilds thumbs and previews - however only thumbs seem to be rebuilt.   The Preferences in both versions  of Bridge are "identical".  The bridge cache files are maintained in the image directories.
The cache construction seems to be quite fast (faster than anticipated) - I am not sure what, if anything, is being rebuilt.
    Is this an expected  operation?
This presents some difficulties in that I  have 530,000 images (7 terabytes)  on Bridge CS4 and the reconstruction  of the files would literally take weeks to rebuild.

as there supposed to be seperate programs and independant of one another this is surprising 'not'
I have been onto adobe thru there support link regarding bridge issues and they
advise to uninstall bridge cs4 using there ceanscript.
well its a fiddly tool and no mention of just removing bridge cS4 it wants to remove cS4EXT too,
which i'm not readt to remove, plugins etc......
anyway, cant help, but there was a bridge CS5 patch released yesterday.
i have noticed that some of issues no longer seem to occur
so it may be wise to download it as it didnt auto download.
also i have seen the same issue you state so your not alone.
not sure whether the patch addresses the issue as ive only had it updated a few hours

    Maria,
Topic or subject titles should be clear, pertinent and concise so that individual users can tell at a glance if they can help or not.

  • Option to Prefer Distributed Cache (Bridge CS5)

Bridge CS5 always stores cache data in its central cache, even if the "Automatically Export Cache To Folders If Possible" has been selected.  This doubles the amount of disk space the cache consumes.
Users should have the option to prefer distributed cache *instead* of central cache, perhaps an option "Prefer Cache in Folders If Possible".  This option would cause Bridge to write cache data *only* to local folders (except when the local folder is read-only, then it writes to the central cache).  This option would allow the user to gain the advantages of a distributed cache (forums.adobe.com/message/2779967), without the unnecessary sacrifice of storage space.
If this idea was considered and rejected, can someone describe why?
    Thank you,
    Scott

You sir, are a GENIUS! I salute you.

  • Where is "adobe bridge keywords.xml" located on mac (using CS5)?

I just installed Photoshop to work from home, and I'm trying to set up my (rather extensive) keywords list. Other discussions have identified the place for this file as '~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Bridge CS5' but that directory does not exist for me - the Adobe directory is missing. There is a 'Bridge CS5.1 Extensions' directory, but there is no place within it for this file.
Does anyone know where I should put this file?
    Thanks!

'~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Bridge CS5' but that directory does not exist for me - the Adobe directory is missing. There is a 'Bridge CS5.1 Extensions' directory, but there is no place within it for this file.
You are looking in the wrong library, that file is in the system library at root lever. You have to look in your user account library (the ~ means your 'user name').
Some other observations, You say you have CS5 but Bridge CS5.1 Extensions points to CS5.5. Not a big deal but that means you should also have a Bridge CS5.1 folder in the App support at user level.
(It is a bit of a mix up with all different versions of apps in the CS suite. PS is at number 12 and comes with CS5. Bridge is at version 4 in CS5. They made an update for the whole Adobe suite and called it CS5.5. Inhere PS 12.1 and Bridge 4.1. The call some parts CS5.1. Hope you still with me here... :-0 )
And I suspect that you are already on OSX 10.7 Lion and that means by default your user library is hidden. To show it can be done in multiple ways, fastest way is to google on user library and OSX lion

  • Unable to open Camera Raw 6.7 from Bridge CS5

I am unable to view the RAW images that were taken on my D90 in Bridge CS5. They show up blank with the Camera Raw logo in the center and "NEF" in the upper left hand corner. This is the first time this problem has occured because I was (and still) able to view RAW images taken from my old D40. I have tried everything including updating my Camera Raw to version 6.7.0.339, but to no avail! I have no error messages, btw. I am operating Bridge and Photoshop CS5 on Windows 7 (32-bit). I found this thread, and it seems extremely helpful, but it's for Mac users: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2842306

All you need to do now is to refresh (purge) the cache.  Everything is fine with your install.
That the right version of the ACR Plug-in is installed in the correct location is proven by the screen shot of the "About Camera Raw" splash screen.  It would not show up in "About Plug-in" if it were not in the correct location.
I also take it only one instance of Camera Raw shows up in your list.
I see absolutely nothing in your first screen shot that would prevent you from sliding your mouse over to the "Purge Cache for This Folder" menu command and then letting go of the mouse.  That's all it takes.  That menu item does not appear to be grayed out.  The only thing that is not clear is whether you do in fact have a folder selected.
The reason you see the generic NEF icons without preview is that the cache for that folder was built when you still had an older version of ACR that did not support your camera.  That's why the cache needs to be purged (refreshed) now.
Humor me for a second and perform the following experiment:  Select all the generic icons you see in the Content panel in Bridge and right-click on them in order to call the "Purge Cache for Selection" command you had discovered earlier and mentioned in a previous post.  You should see the icons turn into thumbnails before your eyes.
Now you can just use the "Purge Cache for this Folder" command on any other folder containing generic NEF icons without having to select the individual icons at all.
If you already have a bunch of folders harboring generic NEF icons, go ahead and use the central Purge Cache command in Bridge preferences to purge the entire Bridge cache on your disk in one fell swoop.
Hope this helps. Let me know.

  • Bridge CS5 freezes after error message...."The operation could not be completed, there is not....

Error - The operation could not be completed.  Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.
After this happens I have to close Bridge as it is unresponsive to any further commands and I often I have to use the task manager to close it.
I have scoured these boards and the web for a solution and have found others w/ the same problem (even people w/ much more RAM) but have not found a solution beyond the usual advice of changing cache settings, increasing page file, or making sure there is enough hard drive space.
I have two 1TB hdd's w/ over 80% free space on each but I only have 2 GB RAM (all my old motherboard can handle).  However, this error message occurs even when Photoshop is not running (only Bridge) and my RAM usage meter shows that I still have plenty of unused RAM available.  I did not have this problem w/ Bridge CS4. The error msg. of not enough storage doesn't make since considering the available RAM showing and ample space on the hard disk assigned to the cache (which is a different physical drive than my OS or the Bridge program.)
Here are some of the things I have tried:
reset Bridge preferences at startup, changed the location of the Bridge cache, its size and options, purged the cache, changed the page file size on both drives to the max, defragmented drives, disabled Norton anti-virus, etc.
    -What else can I try?
-Would creating a new partition on my 2nd hdd to be used solely for the Bridge cache make any difference and if so, why?
Please help, I am willing to try anything to get this to work.  It is a personal challenge at this point.... and I am determined to get Bridge CS5 to work on my machine......
Thanks in advance for any advice or insturctions you may offer!

  • Photo Downloader Adobe Bridge CS5

    Hi
I wonder how i can save the import settings in photo downloader to always have same settings when extracting images?
It always adjust it self back to default and i need to find my location again. Any suggestins?
Also. When working in CS5, and i want to apply e.g sharpening i go to filters and the slide appears, moving down to sharpen the new "window" appears on the left side and not the right.
    What button have a touch???
    Please help
    Thanks!

    Simon

There was a bug in CS5.1 is this the version you are using?  If so here is a solution from a past thread.
If you want to maintain the Downloader dialog preferences (advanced dialog, metadata, etc.) the answer is in the thread referenced previously, but from what I've found, here's a little clarification.
N.B. This is for Windows 7 x64 (Home premium, but probably the same for Pro/Ultimate). This may work for macs too (change directory of course)
    1) Create a new folder called "Bridge CS5" (leave the Bridge CS5.1 folder at least for now. you may want to redirect your cache)
              EX: C:\Users\[Your USER NAME HERE]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5
    2) Copy the "APDPreferences.xml" file -  if you have one - from the Bridge CS5.1 folder to the new "Bridge CS5" folder you just created (should be the only required file  in the folder). It's OK to leave the folder empty too.
    3) Make your changes to the downloader dialog, save a file or two, exit normally.
When you open it again, it should return to the defaults you just set up.

  • Bridge CS5.1 not recognizing RAW from Canon 5DM3...

    Hello All,
I'm having difficulty with Bridge CS5.1 recognizing RAW files from a recently aquired Canon 5DM3.
I've downloaded the 6.7 patch and ran the adobe installer (which gave no error), rebooited the Mac, ran subsequently "purge cache" under "tools", and still no avail.    The blank icon persist, "Camera Raw Options" continues to be unavailable, and cant find where the RAW data files are/were (compounding this problem is that macs and adobe are new to me).
I realize that this issue has been previously addressed, but following some of these suggestions, I still can't get the patch to work. Any suggestions and comments will be most appreciated.

Like Curt stated, in PS go to menu Photoshop / About Plug ins / Camera raw. This brings a window showing the correct version number of Adobe Camera Raw (it should state 6.7 and only one version visible.
On you system it should be in this location:
In Finder use column mode and click on your disk with the system on it (normally it shows 4 folders: Library , Users , Applications and System) Click on Library and follow this path / Application Support / Adobe / Plug-Ins / CS5.1 / File Formats. Inhere should be only one file called "Camera Raw.plugin"
If you click on this file the info next to it should show the version number, in your case 6.7
