Bridge CS5 freezes

For the past few weeks, Bridge has repeatedly been freezing immediately after opening the program. The normal screen appears with either Favorites or Folders showing, but no thumbnails. In the lower left corner, only part of the little rotating circle shows that normally indicates Bridge is working, and it is frozen. Sometimes if I just let everything sit for 5-10 minutes, the thumbnails eventually appear, but if I click on another folder it freezes again.
I have repeated trashed the Preferences and rebooted the computer, but it coninues to happen. Any suggestions on what else I can try?
MacBookPro (early 2008, Core 2 Duo), OS Lion 10.7.2, Bridge 4.0.5.11

Thanks, Curt. I've always specified "Always Export Cache to folders when possible".
I don't partition my drives, and only current files are kept on the MBP's internal HD. I have thousands of photo files stored on an external drive (which is normally connected to the computer (vis USB) when I'm in the office.
Another problem that I've had with Bridge is that it seems to have to create previews in a folder, even if I've visited that folder recently. Perhaps my cache was just getting too large. I've now toggled off the setting for "Keep 100% previews in cache". I didn't think that I had it set that way before, but I just looked and that setting was checked (for save). Maybe this will take care of the problem.

  • Bridge CS5 freezes when using 'reveal in explorer'

Bridge CS5 freezes when you select a file and try to "reveal in explorer". The command does work, it does reveal the file in explorer but then the bridge window turns white and freezes. It usually doesn't happen in the first time you click 'reveal in explorer', but if you do it enough (3x or more) bridge will freeze eventually.
I'm going back to Bridge CS4.
*I'm using Bridge CS5 on windows 7 Professional 64 bit

This sounds like a memory thing.  Check the spare space on the HD (it should never be more than 75% full), defrag the harddrive,  clean out your trash bin, check to see if you paging file is installed, and your RAM is working properly.

  • Bridge CS5 freezes after error message...."The operation could not be completed, there is not....

Error - The operation could not be completed.  Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.
After this happens I have to close Bridge as it is unresponsive to any further commands and I often I have to use the task manager to close it.
I have scoured these boards and the web for a solution and have found others w/ the same problem (even people w/ much more RAM) but have not found a solution beyond the usual advice of changing cache settings, increasing page file, or making sure there is enough hard drive space.
I have two 1TB hdd's w/ over 80% free space on each but I only have 2 GB RAM (all my old motherboard can handle).  However, this error message occurs even when Photoshop is not running (only Bridge) and my RAM usage meter shows that I still have plenty of unused RAM available.  I did not have this problem w/ Bridge CS4. The error msg. of not enough storage doesn't make since considering the available RAM showing and ample space on the hard disk assigned to the cache (which is a different physical drive than my OS or the Bridge program.)
Here are some of the things I have tried:
reset Bridge preferences at startup, changed the location of the Bridge cache, its size and options, purged the cache, changed the page file size on both drives to the max, defragmented drives, disabled Norton anti-virus, etc.
    -What else can I try?
-Would creating a new partition on my 2nd hdd to be used solely for the Bridge cache make any difference and if so, why?
Please help, I am willing to try anything to get this to work.  It is a personal challenge at this point.... and I am determined to get Bridge CS5 to work on my machine......
Thanks in advance for any advice or insturctions you may offer!

  • Bridge CS5 Freezes when trying to preview mp3

There are a few folders on my drive that have mp3's in them which, when I try to browse into the folder and click on the mp3 - bridge freezes. I have to restart Bridge. Other folders work fine. What is happening?

All is ok on that front. Default is itunes/qt. Other folders with mp3 preview fine. Something about these particular files is freezing up bridge

  • Bridge CS5 opens ok, then freezes?!?

    Hi there.
    Newbie question.
Bridge CS5 running on a MacPro worked fine until today. Now opens with main window coming up, but then I can't do anything (access menus, move main window, open/see files)
Spinning pizza appears, go to Force Quit even though this does NOT say Bridge is not responding. Force Quit is the only way to close program.
    Any ideas?

    Any other ideas?
A bit harder and possible losing all your previous cached previews but you
should end up with a fresh install:
First try again a restart with restart prefs and option sometimes it needs a
    few times before it works.
    Then second option:
Quit Bridge, from user library preferences folder find and delete the Bridge
plist file, for CS5 this is the file " com.adobe.bridge4.plist " , drag it
to the trash, and from the same library in Application
Support/Adobe/BridgeCS5/Workspaces find and delete the file "
    !!LastMenu.workspace ".
Again start Bridge holding down option key and choose reset prefs.
If still in trouble repeat above but now also from the user
library/Caches/Adobe/BridgeCS5 drag both plug in and folder named Cache to
the trash (or outside the library if you wish to try first, you can place it
    back if you want so)..
Plist file and cache will refresh itself after restarting Bridge but this
time the cache is empty and you need to recache the thumbs for a good
    preview, this takes some time.

  • Adobe Bridge CS5 Not Responding

Periodically I will click from one folder to another folder in Bridge CS5 and it causes Bridge to freeze and give me a "Not Responding" message. I have never had a problem when running a batch or image processor through Bridge, just when clicking from one folder to another folder. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? If someone could explain it to me in a very simplistic form I'd appreciate it!

If you are building cache when you go to a folder, a spinning arrow in lower left corner, and then click on another folder before the process is finished Bridge can balk.  You can get a contaminated cache to foul things up.   To rebuild the cache for a folder click tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.
You might compact the cache (edit/preferences/cache) to reduce its size and make it run more effeciently.

  • How to restore file associations in Bridge CS5?

    Hi
Some time ago I somehow lost file associations in Adobe Bridge CS5. Now when I doubleclick a RAW file (Canon .CR2 file) I get Firefox, when I doubleclick a JPG I get FastStone and when I doubleclick a PSD file nothing happens at all. Also Photoshop is not in the options I get by right-clicking photos and choosing "Open with...".
I have tried [ Edit -> Preferences... -> File Type Associations -> Reset to Default Associations ] , but that didn't help.
Also when I look in the File Type Association dialog, my file types are set to "Explorer Settings", and Photoshop is not among the other options. I don't know how this uses to be (if associations are defined in Bridge or it uses Explorer/Windows settings?), but how do I easily recreate original setup from when I installed Photoshop?

    Hi Neil
Thanks for the answer. I'm aware I can manually setup associations one-by-one for all file types I need, but just hoped there was some easier way. I mean there's a lot of file types associated in either windows/explorer or directly in Bridge. Some that I might not know I need tomorrow.  Two things I have found out since I asked the question:
    1) The problem is probably caused by uninstalling my old CS4 after I had installed CS5. It looks like somebody experienced a similar problem by uninstalling CS3 after the installation of CS4: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1899159#1899159. So apparently a bug Adobe hasn't fixed even though it was in previous version too!? :-( I think it is only natural to keep your old version installed for some time when installing an upgrade. Just to make sure the new version works well before you uninstall the previous (And I have previous had the problem that a new version of Photoshop had a habit of freezing on my PC - or some other error I don't remember -  until Adobe released an update. So there's a reason for my behavior).
    2) I have installed a second copy of CS5 now on my secondary portable PC, and are using this to make a similar setup regarding file associations in windows/explorer and Bridge. All associations for Photoshop was lost on my primary PC, and God... there's a lot of file associations to setup again... May I recommend Adobe (if reading this) to fix this bug and/or make a script to automatically recover all associations in case of loss!

  • Photodownloader in Photoshop CS5 freezes when choosing a directory

This just recently happened in the last week. When I insert my CF card in my card reader and Adobe Bridge CS5 and photo downloader opens up, it hangs when I try to change the location where to download the files to. So in photodownloader, I select the Choose button in the top left of the attached image, the finder dialog comes up. At this point the photodownloader and dialog hang. I need to go into the Activity Monitor and kill the photodownloader. If I do not change the location, i.e. hit the Choose button, everything else works fine and I can download the images of the CF card. I spoke with Adobe and they feel its something within the OS/Finder.
Any thoughts/help/etc..... would be appreciated. I also tried rebooting, my default directory is on a 1.5TB firewire 800 drive. I unmounted and disconnected it, rebooted and photofinder went to the default Pictures directory. Same thing, freezes. I also tried my iPhone plugged in to download photos and it hang also.
    Thanks,
    K

Not sure if this is quite the same problem, but there is a discussion on the Adobe Bridge support forum about something very similar. This happened to me too. It seems that there is a bug in the latest Camera Raw update. It is weird because everything seemed to work OK for a while and then broke just as you describe.
The solution offered there which I found worked OK so far was to revert from the latest Camera Raw update (v.6.5) to the previous one (v.6.4), which I did via Time Machine going back to pre October 18th 2011 (I think), which is roughly when I last updated.
Look up the Adobe forum if you need to know how to find the file - it took me a while to get the right folder and without checking I wouldn't like to commit myself to the correct directory.

  • Problem with Bridge CS5 and Tools Photoshop Batch

When I select several images in Bridge CS5 and go to Tool>Photoshop>Batch and try an run an Action, I receive an error message asking for the Install disk. Bridge at that point freezes until I put in the install disk and then it runs the batch action fine.
This is very annoying as I always have to have the disk in my DVD Drive.
    Any points would be welcomed.
    Thanks,

Go to preferences/startup scripts and make sure there is a check mark for Bridge and Photoshop scripts.

  • Bridge (CS5) Running Extremely Slow

For some reason, every time I open Bridge (CS5) my thumbnails load at an incredibly slow rate. In addition, when I try to open a folder in Bridge, it takes anywhere from 3 - 5 minutes for everything to load. It’s strange because I’m able to access the Preferences menu and all of the other menus with ease. It’s only when I try to access / open folders that Bridge begins to freeze. I’ve already purged the cache and tried every remedy I could find online, but nothing seems to be working. I’m running Bridge on Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8, by the way. Thanks in advance!

I’ve already purged the cache and tried every remedy I could find online
That is a bit vague, could you describe more exact what you have done.
And can you provide details about amount of RAM, VRAM and free space left on your Mac (what Mac?).
Are you using internal or external disks?
And can you provide the exact version of Bridge (Bridge / about Bridge)
Did it work before and is this behavior came out of the blue?

  • Bridge cs6 freezes when i select video files

Was hoping someone could help me solve this problem
I just installed CS6 master collection however am having a problem with bridge
even though bridge displays thumbnails of my avi files, every time i click on an avi file to select it bridge hangs/freezes and i have to force quit
this also happens when i select all in a folder that has avi files or other video files in it
it even happens when i select a folder that has a video file in it..it just hangs and stops responding
i still have bridge cs5 installed and it is displaying all files in folders perfectly including video files
the avi files are from my camera therefore they are really all around 1-3mins long
    OS: Mac 10.6.8
    i7
media stored on external hardrive firewire 8

i followed your instructions and after restarting bridge it actually let me select the folder with the video files...it displayed the first 19 preview extractions with their thumbnails in the content pane in less than a second
then it took 40 minutes to show the next 80 and with these there were no thumbnail preview files
it took at least a minute after clicking on a video file for bridge to select it and tho it did display the metadata there were no preview in the preview pane
after restarting bridge a second time..i encountered the same problem as before...inability to even select the folder with the avi files
i dont know if this will help but these 3 error messages appear everytime it hangs ( i don't understand what they mean but maybe you do)

  • Trouble with Bridge CS5.1

I am running the latest version of the Lion (10.7.2).
After the upgrade of Camera Raw Bridge become unstable and useless for me.
As soon as I try to click on the menu bar the Bridge freeze and it is not possible to do other than using the forced termination (opt / cmd / esc).
I have reset the preferences, purge the entire Thummbnail Cache and reset to Standard Workspaces.
I have taken the previous version from backup and made a restart. But the problem is still there.
Is there anyone else who has experienced this?
Will a reinstallation of Bridge solve the problem?
    Kind regards
    Venche Jensen.

I will try to remove the ARC, and then try to revert to the previous version of ARC.
I have tried to open a raw file via Photoshop. It wount work. I will giv you a feedback when done.

Since the menu bar on top hang too, I think it is a combination of problem the upgrade of Mac OS and Bridge + ACR.
If you have the option to revert to the previous version of ACR (6.4) and check if this sorted things out it might be helpful for all other users. Personal I have not yet upgraded to Lion (I'm on 10.6.8) and have ACR 6.5 installed. It only gives me the problem that I can't choose an other location for the files in Adobe Photo downloader but that's fine, I always have the same folder i sent them to so that is working for me.
If you have a back up inTime Machine or other Back Up try to find the 6.4 version. Or check the thread about Photodownloader to see how I retrieved it with re install.

  • Bridge CS5 - So Buggy

What is wrong with Bridge CS5? It freezes on both the MBP and the iMac. The MBP is running 10.6.7 and the iMac 10.6.6. I have plenty of RAM and free space but have nothing but trouble with Bridge on both machines. I've tried deleting preferences. Is this only on my setups or are others having trouble? I dread using it.

Did you start Bridge holding down the option/alt key and do the choices there?
    Yes, I do this also.
With deleting cache you mean manual delete the cache file from user library or using the menus for it?
I may have done both in the past, but will try deleting it manually today.
Bridge can be very power and RAM demanding and background processing is not always that fluent. Are you running other applications at the same time that need a lot of RAM too?
I'll try to pay attention to what apps I'm running at the same time. I know the problems on my laptop this week were when I was attempting to set up a tethering arrangement with my camera. I probably had Photoshop running and Canon's utilities. I have 8 GB of RAM on the MBP. I gave up on tethering because I could not disable Bridge or the Bridge photo downloader, and Bridge just kept giving me trouble.
Having problems on both machine could also indicate a corrupt file assuming you have backed up your files and use both on the same machine.
Not the case this past week.
Have you also tried to create a new main folder on your disk and copy some new files to it to see if it still gives problems.
    Not recently for this problem.
And what filetype and size are you using when Bridge stops working?
Many times Bridge freezes upon opening. I primarily use Bridge to view RAW files from a couple different cameras. But also use it to navigate folders.

  • Bridge now freezes

I have been using CS-5 extended for several years without any issues.  Bridge now freezes completely when any directory or folder change is attempted (small activity icon turning  on the bottom left of screen).   No mouse action will activate any part of the software.  The software works perfectly as long as a directory change is not attempted.
My only recourse is to use Task Manager to end the entire program once the software freezes.  I don't want to completely uninstall PS.  Is there a solution to this problem?  Mini-bridge (from inside PS) does not work either as it's trying to access Bridge.
Please respond asap with a solution.  CS5 continues to work flawlessly, and I don't know the cause of this bridge problem.  I have a complete virus suite and have not detected any problems on the PC.

I'm not sure that I understand about "files not being changed in the process."  Isn't a fresh install going to start the entire suite as it's new (out of the box)?  Are there remnants still remaining after a clean "uninstall" that will re-start the "new" bridge program with (the old) file interface errors?
I have not uninstalled and re-installed the software suite as your "reset bridge" using the cntrl button during bridge start fixed my problem.
