Bridge CS5 provides partially incorrect metadata
Bridge CS4 indicated correctly under File Properties the application that created a converted Raw file - for me this is often Capture One . Now in Bridge CS5 more often then not Bridge CS5 lists the files incorrectly under 'Application' as PS CS4 Mac. There does not appear to be a firm rule to this, as from time to time the originating application is listed as Capture One. I'm not sure why this anomalous (from my viewpoint) behavior occurs and would be pleased to have the consistent behavior of Bridge CS4 return in this regard.
No experience with Capture One and also use to DNG converted raw files that don't show any application name. However files developed or edited in CS4 and CS5 do show the correct info for application they where last altered. Not sure what kind of behavior you want to show, should they all show CS5 instead of the application used to edit them?

Bridge CS5 - Adding metadata to RAW files is hit and miss
Can someone help me??? Bridge CS5 will only add the metadata I enter to the files it feels like doing. It is hit and miss. Some files will add it, and other files will get the message "There was an error writing metadata to 100824_Banks_06.NEF". It will go through my whole folder of RAW files, then other times it will allow one or two of the files to get the information. I am going crazy! Is this a preference setting issue, or what?

Bridge is the weakest of all Adobe applications I use. It suffers from the same issues since its first release, when we were told to forgive the teething problems of any version 1 application. Now it's in version 4.x.
I actually spent most of the last two days wrestling with Bridge, and getty pretty annoyed with it. The "Error writing metadata" bug caused me no end of problems in trying to reorganise my keywording of 20,000 photos, and turning the air blue in the process.
I agree that Bridge seems to be the poor relation in the Creative Suite. I call it the Less Glamourous Sister. It needs to be 64-bit to host 64-bit Camera Raw, and it needs to manage resources faster and more efficiently.
I've spent a fair amount of time watching Bridge's activity with a resources monitor utility, and it's a very busy lady. It seems to poll several drives every second or two, accessing the registry, disk-based settings and library files regularly too, even when it appears to be doing nothing. And, even though I had indexed and cached my whole 20,000 photo collection, Bridge insists on recreating some thumbnails and previews at random intervals.*
I decided that the anti-virus software suggestion was a red herring in my case (I now realise this is the Mac forum anyway). Photos which gave an error became subsequently locked for several minutes, and I had to edit the sidecar files by hand. In the end, I worked out that, even though there is no on-screen indication of activity, Bridge is quietly working its way through every item in the Content pane, and it is this action which seems to coincide with the Metadata Error. Wait for it to end, and chances are much reduced, but not fully removed.
Oh, and Adobe's customer treatment might be debatable, but that helpful customer you quoted was a regular abuser of other forum users, so I like to see a silver lining from that post.

Can LR 4 use Bridge CS5 Metadata Templates?
I have generated approx 30 + Metadata Templates in Bridge CS5 and I want to see if I can speed up my work flow when working in Lightroom 4.
So I suppose the question is ; is it possible to achieve the apparent impossible or is there a solution?
Thanks in advanceDoes anybody know where they go?
Try this document from the Adobe Knowledge base:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82893.html
It is about PS and I can't find one for Bridge but it might be a guide to the location because that would be probably the same. I am a Mac user so can't confirm this myself -
Video metadata in Bridge CS5.1
If I add keywords to a video file in Bridge CS5.1, does it add it to the file or keep it in a separate database (i.e. like Lightroom's default behaviour)? I'm looking for a good way to manage my home videos.
Thanks for the help.I mean is there a better program for this sort of thing or is Bridge in fact writing the Metadata to the file (is so, how can I verify...I don't see an XMP sidecar)?
Basically, I'd like to be able to accurately catalog my videos from my Handycam (.h2ts) and DSLR (.mov) as easily and permanently as I do with my photos in Lightroom. Specifically, I want to update metadata like "Date Taken" and "Keywords" so that I can sort and filter as needed.
...yes, bewildering puts it mildly -
LR4 metadata changes are not read in Bridge CS5
I am saving the metadata in LR4 (as I normally do with LR3) and not all the adjustments are registering in Bridge CS5 or Adobe Camera RAW.
The develop panels (i.e. tone, presence) in LR4 have obviously changed and don't exactly match the current Adobe Camera RAW adjustment panel and so I am noticing that all the topmost develop tools such as Tone (Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks) and Presence (clarity, vibrance, saturation) are not registering/landing in Bridge.
Anyone else having this problem?I found this answer helpful: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4248629#4248629

Where does Bridge CS5 store the metadata files?
Where does Bridge CS5 store the metadata files that are created under the Tools menu? I moved CS5 from one drive to another on my Mac Pro and lost all of them. I'd like to recover them is possible.
Yikes!
genenphoto wrote:

First of all, all Adobe applications really need to be installed and reside permanently on your boot volume, i.e. the same volume where your OS resides. There will be endless grief if you install the applications elsewhere.
Secondly, I hope by "moved" you mean that you deactivated CS5 and then used the Adobe Uninstaller to uninstall CS5, then re-installed CS5 from the original media, from scratch, and not just drag-copied the Application folder. And hopefully there's an OS installation on that other drive that will allow you to boot off that drive.
Third, you need to refer to your preferences in Bridge as you set them to find out whether you were keeping the cache in distributed folders or were using the central database, whether you were using separate xmp sidecar files, whether you had Export Cache to Distributed Folders set in Bridge preferences, etc..

Search metadata by default in Bridge CS5
I have metadata embedded into my images in a custom xmp namespace that I've defined. Unfortunately, Bridge does not search the metadata by default when I perform a search.
Instead, I have to open up the find window and explicitly tell it to include all metadata fields in its search in order for it to work the way I want it to.
Is there a way to make this the default behavior so that anytime I search using the search bar in the top right corner, it looks at the metadata by default? You'll get the best result by asking in the Bridge forum:

Error writing to Metadata - Bridge CS5.51
I see the long thread, and yet no answers, and I have the same problem. It is a Bridge CS5.5 issue as everything works fine in Bridge CS5.
Yammer P,
Adobe has many issues to work on, and from what I gather Bridge is s low priority.
The first part of last year we had some Adobe visitors giving much welcomed input to questions. Lately I have seen nothing, but then it does seem like there are no complex issues except this one.
If it was a burning issue for me I would find an avenue to Adobe, outside of this forum, to keep them aware that the problem is still there, and it is important to address.
It appears it is not easily repoducible, but once the condition is found it may take an Adobe tech to seize control of that compter remotely and see how this issue looks.
Your suspect at this time is the database I believe, perhaps they have other tools to see what is happening there. -
Bridge CS6 not displaying complete metadata
I have CS5 and am playing around with CS6. So far so good, impressed overall.
I like to have Bridge set up to display the Metadata for each image, and when I view the metadata, it is not as complete as what I see in the CS5 version of Bridge.
Specifically, I like to be able to see the Subject Distance, which is recorded for the camera/lens combination I'm using. In Bridge CS5, the Subject Distance displays just fine, but it is completely absent in CS6. I have confirmed this to be the case with my Canon 1D Mark IV, and my wife's Canon 7D.
Also, I like to see the ISO as well. In Bridge CS5, it shows nicely as "ISO Speed Ratings" while in Bridge CS6, it shows as "(ISO) Photographic Sensitivity" - kind of excessive. If I only check the "ISO Speed" - nothing shows up.
To verify this, I made sure *all* metadata options in the Preferences menu were selected to display, but despite this, the Subject Distance is not being displayed (and the ISO labeling is a bit wordy for my taste).
Also, I posted this in the PS General Forum, and received a reply from one user that for some of his old NEF files, Bridge in CS5 and CS6 displayed the subject distance properly, while for some newer NEF files, it showed in CS5, but not CS6.
I assume this is a bug, where Bridge is having trouble reading the metadata fields for different raw files, but I welcome any advice on how to get it to display Subject Distance, which is contained in the metadata. And hopefully pointing out this bug will lead to its getting fixed sometime down the road.
Thanks.Curt,
I posted here, since it's a Bridge Function, not really Camera Raw. Bridge is where the metadata is being displayed, where the Preferences identify the particular metadata fields, etc.
And while I understand the need to do my share of sleuthing in tracking down a problem, to better define it, I think the cause here will be sporadic, rather than systemic. As you saw with your own files, some old NEF files displayed fine, newer ones didn't.
Some cameras store Subject Distance in the MakerNote fields, others don't. Some lenses provide the data for Subject Distance in cameras that do record this information, while others don't. So there is a myriad of factors involved here, and any additional sleuthing would just identify particular instances where Adobe's routines aren't correctly identifying and reading the MakerNote data.
I've identified 2 current cameras, which clearly demonstrate the problem. Adobe can examine their routines for these cameras and fix them. And if/when others come forward having discovered their cameras also show this problem, those can be corrected as well.
As I said, I think this is more likely to represent particular quirks in their routines as they're implemented for specific camera models, rather than a systemic, universal problem.
I spent a few hours looking for another program that will find that information, and was amazed to see how difficult it is. Even Canon's own Digital Photo Professional does not provide Subject Distance, which shocked me. I tried PIE, Opanda, iEXIF, Irfan, Faststone, and a few others - none of them correctly found/displayed Subject Distance.
The only one I found was ExifTool, using the mod with the GUI. This displays it in the "MakerNotes" fields, and interestingly shows 2 data points: FocusDistanceUpper and FocusDistanceLower, both in meters. The single datum displayed by CS5 Bridge is inbetween these 2 values - not quite the mean, but close. And as documented above, CS6 Bridge displays none of these. -
How can I rename my pics in Bridge CS5?
How can I renams my pics in Bridge CS5?
Here's what is in the Bridge cs5 help pdf file. (I was not able to find this same help info from clicking help in Bridge cs5).
Batch rename files
You can rename files in a group, or batch. When you batch rename files, you can choose the same settings for all the selected files. For other batch-processing tasks, you can use scripts to run automated tasks.
1 Select the files that you want to rename.
2 Choose Tools > Batch Rename.
3 Set the following options:
Destination Folder
Place the renamed files in the same folder, move them to another folder, or place copies in another folder. If you choose to put the renamed files in a different folder, click Browse to select the folder.
New Filenames
Choose elements from the menus and enter text as appropriate to create new filenames. Click the Plus button [+] or Minus button [-] to add or delete elements.
•String Substitution
Allows you to change all or part of a filename to custom text. First, choose what you want to replace: Original Filename replaces the string from the original filename. Intermediate Filename replaces a string that is defined by preceding options in the New Filenames pop-up menus. Use Regular Expression allows you to use regular expressions to find strings based on patterns in filenames. Replace All replaces all substrings that match the pattern in the source string.
Options
Select Preserve Current Filename In XMP Metadata to retain the original filename in the metadata. For Compatibility, select the operating systems with which you want renamed files to be compatible. The current operating system is selected by default, and cannot be deselected.
Preview
One current and new filename appear in the Preview area at the bottom of the Batch Rename dialog box. To see how all selected files will be renamed, click the Preview button.
4 (Optional) Select a preset from the Presets menu to renaming with frequently used naming schemes. To save batch rename settings for reuse, click Save. -
Error - The operation could not be completed. Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.
After this happens I have to close Bridge as it is unresponsive to any further commands and I often I have to use the task manager to close it.
I have scoured these boards and the web for a solution and have found others w/ the same problem (even people w/ much more RAM) but have not found a solution beyond the usual advice of changing cache settings, increasing page file, or making sure there is enough hard drive space.
I have two 1TB hdd's w/ over 80% free space on each but I only have 2 GB RAM (all my old motherboard can handle). However, this error message occurs even when Photoshop is not running (only Bridge) and my RAM usage meter shows that I still have plenty of unused RAM available. I did not have this problem w/ Bridge CS4. The error msg. of not enough storage doesn't make since considering the available RAM showing and ample space on the hard disk assigned to the cache (which is a different physical drive than my OS or the Bridge program.)
Here are some of the things I have tried:
reset Bridge preferences at startup, changed the location of the Bridge cache, its size and options, purged the cache, changed the page file size on both drives to the max, defragmented drives, disabled Norton anti-virus, etc.
-What else can I try?
-Would creating a new partition on my 2nd hdd to be used solely for the Bridge cache make any difference and if so, why?
Please help, I am willing to try anything to get this to work. It is a personal challenge at this point.... and I am determined to get Bridge CS5 to work on my machine......
Thanks in advance for any advice or insturctions you may offer!Dear Customers,
I am Baichao Li, Adobe Bridge Quality Engineer.

Bridge CS5, will not open, "The operation could not be completed"
MacBook Pro 10.6.4, 8 gig ram, plenty of HD space left.
Just got & installed CS5, upgraded from CS2. Also have Photoshop Elements installed with Bridge CS3, this came with my digital camera.
Bridge CS3 works fine, CS5 will not open, the patch has been installed & the program has been reinstalled a couple of times. It just will not open.
This is very frustrating, & I just don't know what to do.
What I have done...
Reinstalled CS5
Reset bridge with option click
installed patch
Verified & repaired permissionsOmke, I did you said, & it still will not open. However, I did create a new user & it worked fine there.
I also searched & removed every piece of CS5 bridge software I could fine, & it still will not open, but I did get the error report now.
Looks like I will need to backup my system, then do a clean reinstall with my backup.
Here is the error report......

Photo Downloader Adobe Bridge CS5
Hi
I wonder how i can save the import settings in photo downloader to always have same settings when extracting images?
It always adjust it self back to default and i need to find my location again. Any suggestins?
Also. When working in CS5, and i want to apply e.g sharpening i go to filters and the slide appears, moving down to sharpen the new "window" appears on the left side and not the right.
What button have a touch???
Please help
Thanks!
Wbr
SimonThere was a bug in CS5.1 is this the version you are using? If so here is a solution from a past thread.
If you want to maintain the Downloader dialog preferences (advanced dialog, metadata, etc.) the answer is in the thread referenced previously, but from what I've found, here's a little clarification.
N.B. This is for Windows 7 x64 (Home premium, but probably the same for Pro/Ultimate). This may work for macs too (change directory of course)
1) Create a new folder called "Bridge CS5" (leave the Bridge CS5.1 folder at least for now. you may want to redirect your cache)
EX: C:\Users\[Your USER NAME HERE]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5
2) Copy the "APDPreferences.xml" file - if you have one - from the Bridge CS5.1 folder to the new "Bridge CS5" folder you just created (should be the only required file in the folder). It's OK to leave the folder empty too.
3) Make your changes to the downloader dialog, save a file or two, exit normally.
When you open it again, it should return to the defaults you just set up. -
Adobe Bridge CS5 Collections issue!
I'm currently using Adobe Bridge CS5. For some reason whenever I turn on bridge, my images do not remain in the collections I put them in. The file paths and names do not have apostrophes, and the number of images within the collections continue dwindling whenever I start the program.
This is a big problem, especially since I have over 3000 photos tagged right now in bridge.
Thanks in advance!Could you provide more details about OS and system version and exact CS5 version numbers.
Are you using different disks (internal, external) or a network set up or do all the files reside on the same disk.
Sometimes read and write permissions change for what ever reason and this can also cause problems for Bridge.
But asside from that Bridge is not very good in acting as Digital Asset Management for archive purposes and collections can be very useful but to my opinion only for a short period and not when you need to rely on them for a long time. If you need to use this for a longer periode I woudl suggest to also add the name of the collection as a keyword. In that way you have a good escape to find choices back. -
We are using Adobe Bridge CS5. How do you display the lens used to take the photo (70-200mm, 17-40mm, 400mm, 24-120mm, etc.) on thumbnail before editing?
In Basic there is still a lot to wish for in Bridge but in all honesty since CS4 Adobe has not shown much interest in developing it further and adding new features many wished for.
You can always add your wish for new features using the Photoshop family .com page, the more that wish the better chance it eventually get realized, but beware, don't hold your breath…
That said, while it seems logic in your workflow it is also a fact that not all lenses are capable of producing the needed metadata, nor is it standardized info
