Bridge CS5 : sometimes impossible to write the IPTC Core metatags

All is in the title.
Except, Premiere et AE, both on CS5 version, are able to do that.

<<Have any of the problem NEF files been written to by the Nikon browser program?  I vaguely recall in the Windows Forum doing so resulted in files that had difficulty being written to.>>
A good idea, but I don't use Nikon software at all anymore.
I had this problem even during the pre-release, and it is occurring on more than one computer, so I doubt a "system failure." Given that the images are being used on more than one computer (locally, not over a network), and the problem is occurring on more than one computer, I initially thought that there was a problem with the NEFs themselves or the XMP (Photo Mechanic?), but that is now clearly not the case.  As I mentioned earlier, it is also intermittent, and not frequent, and it might be for 1 or 2 images out of hundreds. (We've been processing several thousand images.) Clearing the cache for those specific images fixes the problem for those images. Purging the entire cache does as well. Opening the image in ACR, making changes so that the XMP gets re-written does not fix the problem.  It really seems to be an infrequent but recurrent problem with the central cache.  I still don't know how to trigger the problem, or how to identify which images might show the problem.

  • How to add a Description Column in the Content Panel (Bridge CS5)

    Hi,
    Is it possible to add a Description Column in the Content Panel. If so, how?
    I'm talking about the Description from the IPTC Core data and I'm using Bridge CS5.
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

    This is the screenshot of the Metadata Workspace with the Content Panel (not Metadata Panel). As you can see it shows Name, Label, Keywords etc. but it's not possible to show Description in that list as a column.
    I still agree that it would be a big bonus if you could alter this workspace with description field (even with more lines etc) but what Curt shows you might be an alternative. I couldn't help noticing that you have not created your own custom workspaces.
    Try and play with this. You have the option to divide the window in 3 columns max but you can create different panels as a row in 1 column.
    Grabbing a tab and move it to a new location until a single blue line appears (between the borders, a bit tricky). A vertical blue line means as a column and a horizontal line means a row. A surrounding blue line means same panel but adding as a tab. You can rearrange the tabs by dragging to left or right. under the menu window you can select which panels are visible or use right mouse click menu on top of a panel to choose.
    Sadly enough only 3 columns and only one panel of it's kind per workspace, but you can resize the panels also to your own workflow needs.
    In Bridge preferences you can change the colors for background in the general tab and in the metadata tab you can select what info to view in certain sections. Personally I have set my IPTC to view only description, keywords, date created and a few other subjects.
    That is the nice thing about Bridge, creating custom workspaces, save them and being able to recreate them without problems :-)
    I attach some screenshot of my daily workflow (with the luxury of having a 30' screen) but there are plenty of other options possible, don't forget to name and save your workspace.

  • IPTC extended metadata panel in Bridge CS5

    Hi, hope someone can help me here.
    I am working in a museum digitizing paintings and using Bridge CS 5 to enter the metadata. IPTC extended is ideal for that, but I can not access the metadata panel to the side. I have found it in the preferences (and did all the clicking and customization) but it still does not display. I assumed that because there were preferences it must be accessible but I am not finding that to be the case. I have accessed it through the info panel in Photoshop but I don't want to have to open every image just to add this stuff, why can't I access it through Bridge?
    As a note, I have also downloaded the panel update from IPTC for earlier versions, but I don't have access to those versions at work, just CS 5, so that won't work as a workaround. The site says CS 5 is ready to go out of the box.
    Can I access the extended metadata panel in Lightroom? Am I just missing something? Please help.
    Thanks.
    Miles

    Miles:
    As Rich Wagner pointed out, the IPTC Extended is not accessible via the Metadata panel within Adobe Bridge for CS5. I would hope that this is only a temporary situation, but have no inside knowledge as to when this might occur.
    Use of the Metadata Templates is one way to add "batch" metadata that is only available in the IPTC Extended metadata schema.
    Another option you might want to check is the IPTC-PLUS toolkit.
    http://www.iptc.org/goto/?iptcplustoolkitadobecs
    This is a java driven separate dialogue that can be applied to one or more images from within Bridge and includes all of the fields within the IPTC Core, IPTC Extension and PLUS metadata schemas. You can download the IPTC-PLUS toolkit from the link above. A users guide with full instructions on how to use the various fields as well as how to install are included in the download package.
    BTW, John Nack blogged about this option back in July. http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2010/07/iptc-plus-toolkit-extends-bridge-guides-photographers .html
    Hope that helps.

  • CS5, IPTC core, only author is showing in content

    Metadata>IPTC core>creator, job title......>apply. Only the creator s name is showing in content, (as author) not the other items. Any clue why?
    Thanks

    First of all, where I am: Bridge, I opened up a folder, clicking on the
    metadata tab gives a dark gray panel with the thumbnails listed on the left,
    What you call the metadata tab I think is in fact the Metadata workspace?
    (To my own opinion the Metadata workspace is very useless, but that aside)
    My purpose: to make sure that the person on the other end of the mail gets the
    captions. I figured out a good part of it , but not all.
    In preferences, all the options are checked, so basically I can "write"
    anything i want, but I only need title and author.
    The preferences for Bridge metadata gives you option to check or uncheck but
    that is only to see the lines that you check are visible in the metadata
    panel. If you have the option 'hide empty fields' also checked (by default
    on) the fields that have no info in it will not show.
    But the IPTC in the file info is still having all this fields written to it.
    I found out that if I write those (description and author) in Photoshop
    file\info, they appear simultaneously in Bridge in both the the lighter gray
    panel to the left, in the white fiels with the pencils, AND  next to the
    thumbnails, in the dark gray panel.
    Bridge just reflects the info you have filled in, only the main window of
    the Metadata Workspace does show very little of the content and you are not
    able to select what info you want to show next to the thumbs Hence my
    'useless' qualification...)
    The metadata panel itself however can be of great help for you. You can make
    a template for the IPTC / file info. This can be done in both PS and Bridge.
    For PS open File info and fill in the fields that you think will need the
    same info for every file (your name address copyright etc ) and when done
    click export.
    For Bridge (where you can also open file info) you have the ability to use
    the metadata panel. Top right of the panel is a small icon that provides you
    a fly out menu. Here you can choose to create a template but also you can
    choose to add a template (when having a template created).
    This is a major time saver that let's you add the same info you want to add
    to all your files in one go. Select the files you want to alter and choose
    append metadata and click on the template you want to add.
    Now the files need some time to save but all the data is there!
    Having multiple files that need the same description/caption you only have
    to select those files and in the editable fields in the metadata IPTC core
    section you can write this once and they are written to all the selected
    files when done.
    Besides that Batch rename (tools/batch rename) let you create a really easy
    to use naming convention with auto adding sequence number shot date and a
    lot more options.
    What is left for me to understand: if my data is embedded from file\info, and
    to be more precise it should be file\info\save for web because it seems that a
    different title in save for web prevails over file\info
    Not sure I understand this, you mean the mobile SFW tab in file info? Or the
    file after having used the save for web option to create a file for web??
    I verify that the data is there, which means that I dont have to write
    nothing anymore, so what is the purpose of the lighter gray panel with the
    little pencils?
    Those fields let you add custom info to the metadata if you should wish so.
    Preferable you should fill in as much as possible in the IPTC using the
    template.
    Leaving you with only having to add a few fields with custom info that
    changes per file/subject. Description, keywords, date created, City, state,
    country are fields that can be read by many applications and also will be
    used to search for files using phrases or keywords.
    What is confusing, is that, and I rephrase the old question, if you write
    creator in the IPTC core next to the little pencil, that will appear next to
    the thmbnail in the dark gray panel, if the thumbnail is selected of course,
    but the next item, job title will not appear, even if I click on apply at the
    bottom of the pencils.
    If this is still about the metadata workspace forget about it. If you fill
    in that field or have filled it in using a template and it shows in the
    metadata panel it is saved in there

  • IPTC field codes -- Bridge IPTC Core metadata

    Is there a reference somewhere as to which IPTC codes match up with the IPTC Core fields in Bridge metadata?
    A list of the codes is here, so you know what I'm talking about. For example, the Description field in Bridge metadata corresponds to the Caption / #120 code in this list:
    http://www.fotoware.com/binaries/fsp50/userguide/28.htm
    I'm using a plug-in that writes image info from a database into the corresponding file's IPTC fields based on the IPTC code, but the names of the fields on the list of codes don't match up with what they're called in Bridge, so it's taking a lot of trial and error to figure out where things go.

    Never mind, found one. It doesn't mention Bridge specifically, but it has Photoshop and Lightroom (along with several other image-browsing apps) and both seem similar to Bridge:

  • Swatch Files in Bridge CS5

    I recently upgraded to Creative Suite CS5 (on Windows XP).  Previously I had Illustrator CS3 & Photoshop CS3 and used Bridge to manage/view my swatches (both in AI & ASE).  Now that I have "upgraded" I can't seem to view the ASE files in Bridge CS5 and it is frustrating the living daylights out of me.  I rely on Bridge to view the multitude of swatches I've accumulated and now that I can't view them in Bridge (or even Explorer), I don't know what to do?  Is anyone else having this issue and if so how did you rectify it?  Thanks!!

    Hello Bob. Sorry to bring you bad news. I am struggling with the same. After a call to Adobe Tech support I was told that the Previewing ASE swatches is no longer available in CS5 Bridge. As a solution you can close down the CS5 Bridge and open the CS3 Bridge to view the Swatches get the info you need like Filename etc then close CS3 Bridge and work away in CS5 Bridge. Unfortunately you can't run CS3 Bridge and CS5 Bridge at the same time. Yeah I know its a pain. I am currently recreating my Colour Library using Illustrator with the colour swatches which are viewable in Bridge and saving an ASE file of the same name to keep with it. Hope this helps. Ronanro

  • Export panel bridge cs5 - image quality only to 10

    Hi
    Is anyone else having problems with the image quality settings in the image options.  It cannot seem to save the max setting of 12 it only save jpegs at 10.
    Any suggestions,  Thanks Andy

    I had the exact same issue - except mine is limiting it to a maximum of 8
    The workaround I found is to build the export profile exactly as you would like it - and let it pick whatever number it wants (8 or 10) - ignore the words of Low/High/Maximum - those just correlate to the 8 or 10 (or 12)
    12 is the true maximum for the JPG export and once you run it - there is a noticeable file size increase and the images are a higher quality.
    Once you have the profile built, go into the folder "Export Presets"
    Macintosh HD > Users > YourUsername > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Bridge CS5 > Export Presets
    Open up the file that matches the same name as what you created inside bridge
    The file will likely open as an .xml file inside dreamweaver (or another XML editor)
    find the line:
           <imageQuality>8</imageQuality>
    and set what the system set as an 8 (or a 10) to a 12
           <imageQuality>12</imageQuality>
    save the file and run the export again.
    You will have what were 2-4MB JPG files becoming 8-12MB files with a quality of 12/Maximum
    Hope that helps

  • Do thumbnails show in Bridge CS5 if connected directly from a DSLR (via USB cable)?

    I have a D90 and none of my thumbnails for my files show in Bridge CS5 when connected directly from the camera. This includes ALL types of files (JPEG, NEF, etc). It shows the thumbnails when I use a card reader though. Is this common with DSLRs?

    If you have—misguidedly and unfortunately—done that already, first back up the image files on your computer, then immediately format the card in the camera, which will erase everything in the card and format it to a fresh, pristine state.
    What ever possessed you to do a thing like that?
    Had you done that to the card containing the raw files you can't open?
    Do not be fooled by what the camera shows you anyway. The preview you see in the back of the camera when chimping* is not a preview of your raw file at all, but of the embedded JPEG that the camera creates right after you shoot and records inside your raw file.  The histogram it shows you in the camera is not based on the raw data at all either, but on said embedded JPEG.
    The same is true when you review or playback the images later on the LCD display in the back of the camera.
    *Chimping is a colloquial term used in digital photography to describe the habit of checking every photo on the camera display (LCD) immediately after capture.
    The phrase is most likely derived from comparison between the sounds and actions some make while reviewing images and those of an excited primate (Oooh! Oooh! Aaah!), or when a photographer is completely absorbed in the act of analyzing, admiring or proudly displaying a shot to others.

  • Exposure exifs in Bridge CS5

    After having read a similar thread (What happened to exposure-related EXIF values in the Metadata panel?) which doesn't really answer my question, I got to start a new one:
    1) In my Bridge CS5 I want to know the "Exposure" entry with info like "1/50 s at f/2.8" in the meta data placard.
    2) So I set this in the Bridge presets / meta data / camera data (Exifs)
    by activating "exposure" plus "exposure correction".
    3) After that exposure values of jpgs and tiffs show up in Bridge --- so far so good.
    4) But next time when opening Bridge this preset has been "forgotten"! Isn't it stupid work to do above number (2) each and every time after starting Bridge?
    Looking forward for help...
    MtMichel

    Adobe applications only save their prefereces when you quit them in an orderly fashion.
    mtmichel wrote:

    You should never, ever leave applications in any other way, only through File > Exit or Control+Q.

  • Filling out IPTC Core information to be the same for all images?

    How do I fill out all the IPTC Core info so that any and all images I load into Bridge - that info stays constant - such as 'Creator'   'Country'  'Phone'   'Copyright'  etc. ?

    Image Processor doesn't get me what I'm after.
    Photoshop has the option to create a contact sheet. So imagine that I want to create a contact sheet of images, but keep them on separate layers, and be able to change the size of the images as I feel, to fit my collage.

  • Cannot deinstall ps cs4 and bridge cs5 open all files in CS4 instead of Cs5

    I temporarily could not make the Eastman Kodak ROC Professional plug-in work in my PS CS5 so I tried other programs to use this plug-in in. I therefore installed an old PS Elements 5 and PS CS4 (my present PS CS5 is bougth as an update from CS4) . However now the plug-in works fine in my PS CS5 and I of course prefer to work in this. I have, however,  acquired a new problem: The only way I can open picture files in PS CS5 is via the files menu in Photoshop itself. If I try to open via Bridge (and it is Bridge CS5) I can only open the files in PS CS4.  I cannot deinstall PS CS4. Bridge CS5 states that "open in PS CS4 is the default action".
    Sorry if this is a foolish question.
    Git Amager1

    Sorry not to have reacted to the above for so long. Even after doing as you proposed things did not work. In the end I (after the Christmas Holidays) I did reinstall the pc - changed from Vista to windows 7. I do not know what caused the problem initially but at least I think I can conclude that one should not install the cs4 software after having installed cs5. Thank you for your support.

  • Bridge CS5.5 Smart Collections Question

    Hi,
    We have all of our photographs on a server and within that server we have the photos sorted into folders by date and location. I'm trying to use Smart Collections in Bridge CS5.5 to sort by the CITY in which the photos were taken. I've used the criteria of selecting any photos that have that CITY name in the "Filename" and "All Metadata." It will sort and show me the folders with the location, but I'd like it to simply stream in the photos as well. If I open one of the folders and then click back on the Smart Collection name it will then stream in those photos with the folders. Is there any way for it to simply stream in all the photos the first time so I don't have to manually click on each folder and then click back on the Smart Collection?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    Premiere Pro does not offer this functionality natively.  All temporally compressed media will get retranscoded.

  • Bridge CS5 Cache Location

    What are the advantages and disadvantages of centralized vs. "exported to folders" cache locations in Bridge CS5?
    I see in the help section it says something about sharing images across computers.
    Other than that, what are the effective differences?
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Have never seen a document laying out exactly how cache works, but this is my understanding.
    Central cache is the main cache, and when you select purge this is the one that gets purged.
    I use central cache as I believe that if you get a contaminated file you will have to manually delete the cache in all the folders, as purging only affects central cache.  Using central cache may cost time, expecially on folders I rarely use, as the cache may have been deleted and replaced by cache from recently visited folders.  But this depends on how many files you have and where you have the slider set for storage.
    Some have reported that haveing distributed cache speeds up loading time for folders.  Distributed cache is an additional cache put on the various folders.   It is useful if you want to send photos to another drive as all the  info is there (XMP files).  Otherwise you have to choose build and  export cache.
    Hope this helps.

  • Display the filed instructions (that´s under IPTC Core metadata).

    Hi all
    I´m new on programing scripts in Photoshop..and tried everything but was not able to change the script below. Let´s explain this script is found at Adobe Photoshop default folder and works to show the Camera Model used to the current image.
    Now..the challenge...I want to change the scripts so when you run the it shows a field called Instructions (that´s located in the IPTC Core XMP metadata Tab. (In Photoshop > open an Image > go to File menu > File Info option and see the IPTC Core Tab > Instruction field).
    Can anyone please help me to change this lines. It could look very simple for you but it´s actually very difficult to me; This base-script is what I have and works fine to display the camera model:
    try {
         var xmpString = activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData.toString();
         var tiffModelLength = ('<tiff:Model>').length;
         var tiffModel = xmpString.search( '<tiff:Model>' );
         var tiffModelEnd = xmpString.search( '</tiff:Model>' );
         var tiffModelStr = xmpString.substr( tiffModel + tiffModelLength, tiffModelEnd - tiffModel - tiffModelLength );
         if ( tiffModelStr.length > 0 ) {
              alert( tiffModelStr + localize ( '$$$' ) );
         // check the exif
         var exifModelStr = '';
         var exifData = activeDocument.info.exif;
         for ( var i = 0; i < exifData.length; i++ ) {
              if ( exifData[i][0] == 'Model' ) {
    } // try end
    catch( e ) {
    // always wrap your script with try/catch blocks so you don't stop production
    // remove comments below to see error for debugging
    // alert( e );
    Thank you a lot for any help.
    Gustavo.

    Here is one of X's functions that should give you the information..
    #target photoshop
    var xmp = activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData;
    var Instructions = parseMetadata(xmp,"photoshop:Instructions");
    alert(Instructions);
    function parseMetadata(xmp, tag) {
      var re = new RegExp('<' + tag + '>(.+)</' + tag + '>');
      var m = xmp.match(re);
      if (!m) {
        re = new RegExp("<[^:]+:" + tag + ">(.+)</[^:]+:" + tag + '>');
        m = this.xmp.match(re);
      return (m ? m[1] : '');
