Bridge for management of archive of footage?
Hey guys and gals,
My employers are making the move over to CS6 and it has fallen to me to manage a sizeable amount of media. We have around 200 2TB bare drives of old footage that needs to be organized in one central and searchable database. So my question is this: is Bridge the right program for this? Or is Prelude better suited to this task? Your input and suggestions are appreciated.
I would probably use Bridge for this. I've also seen it suggested that Lightroom might work.

Is adjusting permissions for LightRoom based archive management worthwhile?
I'm trying to set up an archive that is managed through a LightRoom Catalog. I was wondering if anyone has done this before and adjusted the permissions of their files to read only to ensure that LightRoom Catalog metadata changes do not alter or get saved to files.
I plan to have the archive set up in 3 locations with copies of the LightRoom Catalog. I will need to be able to add keywords and collections to a catalog at 2 of the locations. I am interested in using permissions to ensure that the catalog is the only file that needs to travel between the locations. I don't want to get into a situation in which altering the LightRoom Catalog might alter files and necessitate that I either save new metadata to files with each keyword/collection addition or that I regularly synchronize the entire archive to ensure all 3 copies of the archive are mirrors of one another.
I have three serious concerns about the longterm viability of managing file permissions:
1. I worry that it will be difficult to manage the user/s who have the privileges to manage these permissions and that it will be difficult to do so in different locations and on different computers
2. I worry about whether permissions management might introduce some form of file corruption
3. I worry about the time involved in altering an entire archives worth of permissions to read only and the time involved in reversing this every time I want to unarchive content for new projects
I have also posted this question to Luminous Landscape here: Adjusting Permissions for LightRoom Catalog Based Archive Managment. Worthwhile?... and adjusted the permissions of their files to read only to ensure that LightRoom Catalog metadata changes do not alter or get saved to files.
By default, Lightroom does not write anything to your photo files. Of course, there's no way to prevent a user from changing this default behavior and writing information to the files. I suppose making the directories read-only helps, but people could still change that. If the directories are on a server, then only the server admin could change the permissions.
2. I worry about whether permissions management might introduce some form of file corruption
I never heard of such a thing, but this is an operating system issue, not a Lightroom issue.
I worry about the time involved in altering an entire archives worth of permissions to read only and the time involved in reversing this every time I want to unarchive content for new projects
I don't think you understand how Lightroom works. There would be no need to reverse anything to "unarchive" the content — although in my opinion, the idea of "archiving" content in the first place doesn't feel right ... if the photos are imported into Lightroom at one time, leave them in Lightroom, don't go through an archive process removing the photos from Lightroom followed by unarchive process, that is something that is ineffective and causes numerous problems with non-expert users. When you import photos into Lightroom, the photos still remain on your hard disk somewhere, Lightroom does not actually keep a copy of the photo. Lightroom keeps pointers to the photo's locations and stores any metadata and edits. Removing a photo from Lightroom (archiving) is the equivalent of deleting the metadata and edits, and I cannot see a reason to do that.
So, bottom line, to answer your title question, "Is adjusting permissions for Lightroom based archive management worthwhile?" — without further discussion of your setup and goals, I see no reason to even spend your time on this, unless you are the server admin of the location where the photos are stored, in which case then the answer is go right ahead and make them read-only. -
How to open a zip-file in Bridge for PC?
How to open a zip-file in Bridge for PC?
I think it's built in, just double click on it and it should open with Archive Utility. I dunno, maybe Unrar X might work for you>

Have been using Bridge for ages but ran across a problem this morning I had not seen before.
Creating some web galleries for a couple of customers I used Bridge to Create a Flash Gallery and then posted on my web site. All worked just fine and with only 16 images creating the gallery was about 30 seconds. Then went back to the "Essentials View". Went back into Photoshop CS6 to work on some images for another upload, and Photshop was running really slow. Normally on my Win 7 x64 system (16GB) RAM it runs really well. Fired up task Manager and saw that Bridge was consuming just over a GB of memory. Closed Bridge, opened Bridge again, used Bridge to open images in ACR then into Photoshop. Bridge at 250 GB and system running fine. Created another Web Gallery and Bridge up to a GB again. Finished and went back to Essentials view - Bridge not giving back any memory. Now this was with 16 images - gets worse when you create a gallery of say 200 images.
Now I know Bridge is somewhat of an Orphan but is there any need to hold onto the memory -as even with my somewhat beefy system I have to close and reopen Bridge to bring performance back.
Cheers
Mike
PS Running the latest versionsof Bridge and Photoshop and ACR 7.3 that are available for a non-cloud userI have only used Web Galleries from Bridge a few times before - but I think I have narrowed down the cause. If I just create the Gallery resources look normal - but if I hit preview the memory allocation goes up - so could be caching the whole Gallery - but would have thought that it would have released it once the browser was closed - looks like Bridge does not look for close of the preview so hold onto everything.
Have to admit that the Web Gallery feature works well to get images onto a site in a hurry for a client to preview - and email me back with the final images they want. Now to brush up on my XML & HTML to add in a few instructions and add a link to direct them back to my home page
Happy New Year

Bridge cache managment & export to folders?
What is the function and advantage of "auto exporting cache to folders" in Bridge?
Round 2 testing, I changed the CS6 Bridge cache location to be the same location I was using for CS5, on a secondary drive.
Small mistake, because CS6 proceeded to delete the entire existing cache and start building a new one. However, Bridge CS5 seems to coexist OK sharing the same cache with CS6. They are both re-building the cache as I visit individual folders. (30,000 files in 800 folders gonna take a while).
Long ago under CS3 I adopted the strategy of setting Bridge to "Auto export cache to folders." That worked well, because if you purged the master cache, Bridge would very quickly rebuild it from the folder cache files each time you re-visited a folder. The thumbs would come up very quickly if a folder cache existed, much slower if no folder cache existed.
Under CS5, and now CS6, that is no longer true. If you visit a folder after the cache has been purged, a slow process to generate thumbnails occurs. It appears that the individual folder cache is not being used for anything. The time to re-build the cache is about the same, regardless of whether folder cache files exist or not.
Purging or deleting the Bridge cache was often necessary under CS3 because the cache often became corrupted. CS5 was more stable, but still not immune from cache corruption. Maybe CS6 will be even more stable, but I'm betting cache purges will still be sometimes necessary. Is there any way to make the rebuild faster? Or more generally, what's the best strategy for Bridge cache management?
(And no, I don't have "keep 100% previews in cache" selected.)What is the function and advantage of the Bridge Forum?

Problem about space management of archived log files
Dear friends,
I have a problem about space management of archived log files.
my database is Oracle 10g release 1 running in archivelog mode. I use OEM(web based) to config all the backup and recovery settings.
I config "Flash Recovery Area" to do backup and recovery automatically. my daily backup schedule is every night at 2:00am. and my backup setting is "disk settings"--"compressed backup set". the following is the RMAN script:
Daily Script:
run {
allocate channel oem_disk_backup device type disk;
recover copy of database with tag 'ORA$OEM_LEVEL_0';
backup incremental level 1 cumulative copies=1 for recover of copy with tag 'ORA$OEM_LEVEL_0' database;
the retention policy is the second choice, that is "Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery to any time within the specified number of days (point-in-time recovery)". the recovery window is 1 day.
I assign enough space for flash recovery area. my database size is about 2G. I assign 20G as flash recovery area.
now here is the problem, through oracle online manual, it said oracle can manage the flash recovery area automatically, that is, when the space is full, it can delete the obsolete archived log files. but in fact, it never works! whenever the space is full, the database will hang up! besides, the status of archived log files is very strange, for example, it can change "obsolete" stauts from "yes" to "no", and then from "no" to "yes". I really have no idea about this! even though I know oracle usually keep archived files for some longer days than retention policy, but I really don't know why the obsolete status can change automatically. although I can write a schedule job to delete obsolete archived files every day, but I just want to know the reason. my goal is to backup all the files on disk and let oracle automatically manage them.
also, there is another problem about archive mode. I have two oracle 10g databases(release one), the size of db1 is more than 20G, the size of db2 is about 2G. both of them have the same backup and recovery policy, except I assign more flash recovery area for db1. both of them are on archive mode. both of nearly nobody access except for the schedule backup job and sometime I will admin through oem. the strange thing is that the number of archived log files of smaller database, db2, are much bigger than ones of bigger database. also the same situation for the size of the flashback logs for point-in-time recovery. (I enable flashback logging for fast database point-in-time recovery, the flashback retention time is 24 hours.) I found the memory utility of smaller database is higher than bigger database. nearly all the time the smaller database's memory utility keeps more than 99%. while the bigger one's memory utility keeps about 97%. (I enable "Automatic Shared Memory Management" on both databases.) but both database's cup and queue are very low. I'm nearly sure no one hack the databases. so I really have no idea why the same backup and recovery policy will result so different result, especially the smaller one produces more redo logs than bigger one. does there anyone happen to know the reason or how should I do to check the reason?
by the way, I found web based OEM can't reflect the correct database status when the database shutdown abnormally. for example, if the database hang up because of out of flash recovery area, after I assign more flash recovery area space and then restart the database, the OEM usually can't reflect the correct database status. I must restart OEM manually to correctly reflect the current database status. does there anyone know in what situation I should restart OEM to reflect the correct database status?
sorry for the long message, I just want to describe in details to easy diagnosis.
any hint will be greatly appreciated!
Sammythank you very much, in fact, my site's oracle never works about managing archive files automatically although I have tried all my best. at last, I made a job running daily to check the archive files and delete them.
thanks again. -
Paperq: a tool for managing a reading queue of academic literature
paperq is a command-line tool for managing a reading queue of academic literature. It's usage is simple: you add files to the queue and then you run it without arguments to open the next file in the queue. The queue part of the code itself is rather simple but paperq also offers some other nice features:
Add files (-a option)
Remove a file (-r option)
Display info on a file. Given a BibTeX file, print the bibliographic information, otherwise print the file location (-i option)
List all files (or bibliographic information) in the queue (-l option)
Create an archive (tar.gz) of the papers in the queue, prepending the file names with the queue position (-z option)
Operate on any file in the queue, instead of the head, via the -n option
Peek at a file (open it, but don't remove it from the queue) via the -p option
Print a file (-t option)
Configurable file-opening command (xdg-open %s, by default)
Documentation is available in the README file or on the website (see below). A man page is also included.
I've been using it myself now that I finally stopped using Mendeley. I find it to be quite handy, so I've packaged it up to be shared with others.

marttt wrote:Thanks very much for this! I can finally ditch some of my ugly scripts now. Have you considered adding other bibliographic data formats in the future? (Here is an interesting solution with YAML and Pandoc and, correspondingly, proper UTF-8 support.)
Glad to hear it could be of use to you! Honestly, this also just started out as a quick script but little by little I started adding more handy features.
As for other bibliographic formats, it could be possible. I'm mainly familiar with BibTeX, so I would need to see how the other formats look.
In all honesty, the bibliographic info printing could be greatly expanded: only journal articles are supported at the moment, and mathematical expressions in the titles aren't yet supported (i.e. greek characters). It might be more efficient in the long run to write a dedicated biblio parsing program that loads some pre-written BibTeX-parsing library rather than all the crazy sed work that's going on in there right now. If that's the case, then it's just a matter of loading some library for a different biblio file format in order to support it. -

What is the best way to archive old footage (DVD, VHS, Super 8 etc.)
Hello,
I am starting a huge archiving projet of possibley 100-200 hours of footage from all kinds of sources (VHS tapes, Mini DV, Super 8 film).
What is the best way to archive this footage at the highest possible resolution?
What sort of file should be saved?
Im a complete starter at this.
Thank you!One strategy is to purchase a Canopus ADVC300 analog/dv converter. It has a TBC incorporated.
You connect your original source material (for example - VHS deck) to the Canopus via analog cables then from the Canopus via firewire to your computer. This will turn everything into DV format.
Play the tape through the canopus and record to your hard drive.
Take good notes for each tape. Create a logging sheet and make notes as the system captures.
Once you have the tapes in the computer, break them into 1 hr or less segments by some reasonable system - chronologically, by personalities, locations or whatever makes sense to you.
Then write out each 1 hour segment back to a DV recorder. Give each tape a unique reel number - and make the reel number part of the file name on the computer.
When you are done in a year or two ( lol ) you should have two matching sets of material - one on the hard drives and one on tape - with names that make it easy to cross reference and a binder full of logging information. If you want to be fully digital, look into a nifty application like CatDV. It will help organize a mass of video info like this.
DV runs at ~13-14GB/ hr. Plan you storage accordingly.
Purchase professional quality DV tapes - not drugstore junk.
Good luck.

Is Bridge color managed?
My monitor is correctly profiled and the colors in Photoshop CS5 are correct and they print correctly. When I view the same image in Bridge, however, the colors are slightly more saturated and seem incorrect. They appear as they do when I view them in non color managed applications. Is Bridge color managed as is CS5?
do you mean the small thumbnails (no) or the Preview (yes)
if the Preview doesn't "match" Photoshop, then the image is likely untagged (or Ps is applying a different source profile)
i am pretty sure Bridge applies sRGB to untagged images for the Preview, and Ps applies its working RGB profile for all practical purposes (if we don't color manage it)
try downloading the IPHOTO TEST FILES and taking them into Bridge (and other file managers)
PS
the iphoto tutorial images contain a low resolution 72ppi collection of 10 files of one image in five different colorspaces in tagged/untagged pairs -
I have 128gb class 10 sd card as external storage but when i goto bridge for mac>>browse/manage files on device, i cannot do anything other than look at the files on internal/external storage..i can't do anything with them??? what is the point of this feature?
I also cannot use file commander to do anything other than transfer music to sd card. The music files all appear on the sd card as individual music files and not as albums and i cannot create folders to the sd card. This means that I have nearly 2000 music files listed on the sd card. When i run anyone of the music players i have they all appear as contained within an album...so difficult, not straight forward at all.Using the browse/manage files you can manually copy files to/from your phone. Also open Finder and then use drag and drop to copy files.
To create a folder using File Commander, tap the "+" at the lower left and select "Folder" and type a name for the folder.

I am looking for a bridge for ethernet port of MSI 180. The bridge is used for wireless connection (It changes wired connection type to wireless one either 11b or 11g). Is there a bridge compatible with Mega 180?
Well as for the WGA54G,
I am (again!) struggling to get it working, I recently had issues where the reset button did not work (thank god I remembered my password)
For some reason any changes I made were not saved, that got fixed by updating the firmware.
It does not support WPA (have to check to be sure)
It does only support one device (so you cannot connect a switch to it and have multiple devices connected to your network.
For some reason it does not understand I have a DHCP server running, I have issues getting the DHCP forwarded to the device it is supposed to create wireless for.
connectivity is so-so I had to cap the max transfer limit to get a stable connection.
If I were to buy one again (which I may do, since I need it to connect my DVD player to my network) I would buy a accesspoint, and not a game adapter.
As for brands I will definitately not buy Linksys again, nor Asus. I bought a Asus PCI wifi adapter, which has buggy software (maybe related to Windows ME).
Does anyone else have comments on wireless suppliers that have good software added to their hardware. I am quite happy with my 3Com router, which is quite easy to manage.
Do not have comments on WAP54G, as above I will not buy a linksys product again.
How is US Robotics for instance ?

Requirements for managing Server Core
Hello,
What are the requirements for managing Server Core? We have a Windows 2008 functional level forest and domain and were thinking about installing 2012 server core servers but weren't sure we'd be able to manage them with 2008 server or Windows 7 tools.
Thanks,
RobertHi Robert,
To remotely manage a server in server core mode, we can use the following ways:
Remotely using Windows PowerShell
Remotely using Server Manager
Remotely using an MMC snap-in
Remotely with Remote Desktop Services
However, we can’t use server manager in Windows Server 2008 or in RSAT for Windows 7 to remotely manage Windows Server 2012 in server core mode. To
use server manager to remotely manage Windows Server 2012 in server core mode, we must use the version of Server Manager in Windows Server 2012 or that is available as part of the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 download package.
Regarding how to manage a Windows Server 2012 in server core mode, the following articles can be referred to for more information.
