Bridge has started to destroy our JPEGs; known problem?
Hi,
half an hour ago something - possibly Bridge - has obviously started to destroy our JPEGs. We first noticed strange artefacts in the Bridge previews; then we were shocked when we discovered that the files themselves were altered (without changing the modification date of the file). We checked this by connecting the external drive that contains the files to another computer: It's not a problem with the previews, the files themselves are destroyed. (On this other computer GIMP gives the error "Corrupt JPEG data: 3841 extraneous bytes before marker 0xd9" when opening the file I've attached to this post.)
Fortunately the NEF files are unaltered. A check of the hard drive shows no problems.
We're not 100% shure that Bridge is causing this - but since Bridge was the only program open at the time and since the problem developed while using Bridge it seems very probable to us that Bridge is involved in this phenomenon.
Did you observe anything similar? Is this a known problem? We didn't find anything when searching Google or this forum.
Thanks for your help!
(We're using Adobe Bridge CS5 4.0.5.11 on an iMac with Mac OS X 10.7.5)
- mainly (only? I don't know exactly) files are affected where we added metadata;
The clue about no change in modification date in the first post would mean you did not alter the files. However this changes things because you seem to have done so.
In normal use while adding metadata or rename the file needs to be saved again to apply the changes. While doing so Bridge updates the thumbs and previews to reflect the new situation.
If this save action would be the cause of the destroyed jpegs they should have shown so immediate after applying the changes. But yes, we all are in a hurry and have a short memory
If you have pointed Bridge to another folder while the save was still in progress then you would not notice it but also the cache is not likely to rebuild until you point Bridge again to the folder.
The moment you point Bridge to that folder first the thumb rebuilds and then the preview to reflect the changes. Because the modification date did not change to the date you saw the changes happening it is likely the problem has been caused before but you have not noticed earlier until you pointed Bridge to this folder which started the recaching of the files (only modification of the cache file, not the original jpeg) to reflect the new situation.
Don't use Gimp myself but a jpeg is a jpeg and an international standard so they both should be able to read and write correct files.
Therefor it stays a strange problem and you should back up your files frequently in case this starts happen again. If it is a one off we keep wondering what it might have been but if it repeats I would first suspect the disk (running a health scan is not always pointing to other problems like correct read write permissions and also folders can get corrupted for strange reasons).
BTW, I never have been a fan of RAID, to expensive and to much space needed. A simple back up scheme with different disks has always done the trick for me.

ITunes has started to cause instability, help ?
Hi, recently iTunes has started causing my Windows XP system problems. Sometimes, when I try to run it, it never opens. When that happens, I can't open other programs like Firefox or MS Word either. When I press Ctrl Alt Delete i see "iTunes.exe" is running in Processes but "iTunes" is not listed in Applications. I am forced in this situation, which happens quite frequently, to plug out my computer because when I shut down the "This program is not responding" box pops up and when I click "end now" the computer just idles forever and never shuts down.
If anyone could help me fix this problem, it would be much appreciated. Everytime iTunes decides not to open I am forced to keep plugging out my computer (can't be good for my hard drive!) Thanks a lot in advance, GregSometimes this problem can occur when a firewall blocks iTunes starting, as a test try briefly disabling your firewall to see if iTunes will start.
Do this after restarting your PC.
SOmetimes a damaged configuration files can do this, there are instructions for deleting the file in the link I will give at the end.
Do you use facebook & Qloud or other plugins?
Here are are some general instructions for troubleshooting launch problems - finding out if it is user specifc is an important first step.

I have master suite cs6. on mac osx. bridge has been quitting unexpectedly. Also, getting message at start up that states that "bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation" I have purged the cache several times and adjusted settings with no change. I also downloaded the entire suite and installed. Do I need to uninstall all of the programs before installing the suite? There is not an option to install only Bridge from the install package.

Bridge mail starts and shuts in a loop on Playbook
Dear all,
All of a sudden my bridge mail flickers white (looks like start and shut down of bridge mail in a loop) instead of opening.
BB is 9900 and PB has latest OS (2).
Is there a known problem?
I already experienced the same when i used OS 2 Beta and the workaround with the app "Bridge OS2 alternative" does now work as well.
I appreciate any hint before I start reinstalling everything.
Many thanks,
ChristianThanks aandras,
I previously had the problem too with the OS2 beta and then awipe fixed it, that is somewhat understadable.
But now it happened all of a sudden.
In the meantime I deleted another approx 200 mails AND installed the new PB OS update that just was released.
Still no change.
Wiping is no option since it took me months to make the PB as it is right now and I do not know what it takes me to make it as it was before.
Isn't this a Blackberry support forum? Where are the geeks from RiM to help me out of this thing? I doubt I am the only one with this happening. Just "Hey dude, if it flickers just wipe that thing" cannot be the only answer.
help!

I am using iPhone 4 from the last one year and went dead and got it replaced by paying Rs.12500/- to Nyasa Sion Koliwada Mumbai Service Provider but now again after 38days the problem has started, what do i do? Is this is the quality & service we boost? On visiting the store we get only one reply you may write to Apple directely. we have the similar kind of problem with iPad which is being used by my wife Mr.Neelam Vij and paid Rs.16000/- to get it replaced within a year & 6months use. so in totality we have paid Rs.28500/- + Rs. 3000/- diagnostic charges.
1. iPhone 4 , 32 GB Black with Sr. No. 88******A4T
2. iPad 2, 16GB White with Sr. No.DL*******KPH
Moreover, we have no information to contact whom. even the replace set has a warranty of only three month which further confirm that Apple itself is not confident wheather product will last after replacement for more then three month. Such kind of happening do not encourage anyone to recomend this product to anyone. Would appriciate a faster response to our problem if someone from Apple is going to read this email.
Thanks & Regards
A K Vij

IMac Retina has started shutting down several times a day, generating a "Panic Report".
Although I have had a new iMac Retina since October, it is only within the past few weeks that I have started trying to use it for most purposes. Initially, it seemed to be working OK. But during the past week, it has started to do peculiar things, such as:
1. Now, several times a day, it shuts down unexpectedly. When I boot it back up, it displays a message saying that it was shut down because of a problem. Then, when I click on the window for a report of the problem, it generates a long “Panic Report”.
2. When it boots back up, it automatically opens several windows that I did not have open when it shut down — Safari, Firefox, Excel, Word, etc.
3. I have 2 external 1gb drives connected for data, and 2 external 4gb drives connected for Time Machine backups. All of the drives have been formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). However, although Finder originally showed all 4 of those drives, Finder now always omits a particular one of the 1gb drives. Yet, iDrive and Time Machine continue to recognize all 4 drives.
4. Several times over the past week, it suddenly popped up a “Jabber" window containing a long transcript of a series of iPhone texts that I exchanged in January. However, I never installed Jabber (to my knowledge), and it doesn’t show as currently installed on any of my devices.
I just ran EtreCheck, and this is the report:
Problem description:

Adobe Bridge has been deleted and needs to be re-installed. How can this be done without reinstalling the entire CS5
Hi RDMDanielM,
Welcome to the Community!
We cannot install Adobe Bridge as a Standalone product, you can just reinstall Photoshop and Bridge will be reinstalled with it. Go ahead and start uninstalling CS5 suite but choose Photoshop from the list and the same will be applicable while Installation.
Thanks!

"Open document with" has started to appear
GroupWise 7 client and server - we do not integrate our documents with the
appropriate applications when installing GroupWise clients.
Until recently when double clicking on a document in the library - either
by browsing the library directly or using Find - GroupWise fired up the
appropriate application (usually MS word from Office 2003) then loaded the
document, returning it to the library when you had finished editing.
We are now being asked to select the application to be used to open the
document, even though the icon for the file type in the library shows the
correct application.
This has started recently for me and other users. As far as I know we have
made no changes. Is there any way to force GroupWise to use the appropriate
application without prompting the user.
This problem does not occur if I use Windows Explorer to browse documents
on the local machine or on the network - so Windows knows the correct
application to use to open the .doc files.
Thanks
IanMore information:
It's a particular problem with GroupWise. When I double click on an
attachement to an e-mail, where the default action is to open, I'm also
presented with a list of programs to use to open the document. Even when I
say "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" the setting
does not stick.
Yet double clicking on a .doc file in Windows Explorer always loads word
and opens the doc without asking me which program to use. So my PC knows
about the correct file associations - it's GroupWise that forgets
Thanks

Whenever Bridge opens, I get this alert. I am using the trial version of CS6 Design Standard on OSX 10.8.2
I tried doing as requested and then Bridge freezes when I open a new folder. I don't want to buy the software if it has a problem.Omke, it OP never had previous versions then he would not have Bridge5.plist. But the rest of it applies.
That would only be the case if the OP never started it but as soon as the warning message pops up the app has started and also then created a plist file and a cache folder if it was not already there
However, there is a significant change in OS between OSX 10.6 and OSX 10.7. Since 10.7 Apple decided to hide the user library by default, probably because many people tried things they better not had done and then called the help desk...
Up to 10.6 the user library is normal visible in the user library and from 10.7 and above you must use a little trick to reveal it. The easiest way is to to select the menu Go and when the fly out menu shows itself press option key and that brings the option to select the user library in view.
A more permanent solution should be done using Terminal to add a Unix code, sounds trickier then it is and when doing a google search for hidden library in Mac Os their will be enough information to get id done with much effort :-0 -
Cannot open CS6 Bridge. Always the same ERROR: Bridge has a problem and cannot read the cache
Try this. This is for CS6 but substitue CC and Bridge 6.
~library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6 and inhere should be 2 files:
Adobe Bridge Plug-in Cache
and the folder called Cache. Inhere should be 4 folders called '254', '1024', 'data' and 'full'
All those folders carry the content of the respective quality of the thumbs and preview as well as 100 % cache and Bridge database.
Any way, Since you have not used Bridge you have no relevant amount of cache and I would suggest you quit both PS and Bridge and manual delete both the items (plug in and folder called cache at the end of the Bridge CS6 path mentioned above.
(both files will refresh itself after a restart of Bridge).
To be on the save side also visit in same user library the folder Preferences and look for the file called "com.adobe.bridge5.plist" (yes it is Bridge 5 that comes with CS6, all Adobe apps have their own version number and they are presented in the same Suite version. CS6 has PS version 13 and Bridge version 5 )
also drag this file to the trash.
Then hold down option key (alt) while starting Bridge and this should give you the option to reset the preferences as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Choose reset prefs and try again. -

Hi- I am having an issue- When I turn my computer on- I get the message "Bridge has encountered a problem & is unable to read the cache- try purging central cache in cache preferences to correct situation" When I open Photoshop CS5 it say "repousse file is bad or corrupt" "the material file is bad or corrupt" Also all of my actions have disappeared - even the default actions... HELP because as of now, no one has any answers except to buy a support contract....
I use windows & the problem is with photoshop cs5First Aid is to reset preferences. Hold down the Ctrl key and Start Bridge. You will get a reset window with 3 options. You can choose all 3.
If you moved files or used a registry cleaner you many have lost links. In that case the Cleaner Tool and reinstall is recommended. -
I'm seriously pulling my hair out on this one , bridge has decided to no longer work when I run the program it opens to the last file I was using and freezes up I can't even close the program down I have to force quit I am a professional photographer and I'm now unable to view my raw files !!
The issue started 4 days ago when as my CS6 dose once a month asks to re enter my product key ( it's done this since the day I bought it over a year ago which I think is insane a product key should only be entered once !)
I have tried everything the past 4 days all updates for the IMac & adobe , disk utility , timemachine , ALL the trouble shooting you have on you site right down to uncommon repairs !
Still it's not running I need help ASAP as clients still require their images and I am booked I can't turn clients away :/Interestingly, that didn't work from the desktop shortcut, but did when starting from the Programs .exe file. Thanks for stopping me making a hash of it.

CC Bridge JPEG Preview Problems
Hello - I'm trying to organize a massive number of image files. For some reason certain files that are labeled as ".jpg" or ".jpeg" will preview while others won't.
I can rename them with the other jpeg extension and the previews re-appear, but then all the other files in the folder - which I didn't rename - lose there previews. If I try to launch the file - which was fine previously, it says the JPEG marker is unknown or invalid.
Also - if leave a folder and then go back to it...eventhough I was able to see everything two minutes ago, when I click in, I literally get a glimpse of the previews before they all start changing to the JPEG icon. THIS IS A MASSIVE PROBLEM.
It's a terrible cycle and is really causing problems in my workflow.
Please advise.
Thanks.
KevinHello - I'm trying to organize a massive number of image files. For some reason certain files that are labeled as ".jpg" or ".jpeg" will preview while others won't.
Can you provide more details about system, version and exact version of Bridge you are using?
Wat is a massive number in your opinion?
in general, all files need an extension to let the system recognize the file type. For a jpeg file this would mean the extension '.jpg' as last part of the file name. It is also a bad idea to use more dots in a filename because after a dot the system expects an extension to determine the file type.
Can you provide an example of your renaming scheme or a screenshot?
Renaming in batch should ideally be done leaving the existing file extension as it is. If the file is a jpeg by origin you can add the .jpg extension again but for converting filetypes you have to open them in PS and use a save as command including the selection of the wanted file type. -
Lately Safari has started crashing constantly
Lately Safari has started crashing many times a day, both on my Mac mini and my Powerbook. Sometimes it simply hangs for no apparent reason and other times it downright crashes.
Has anyone else experienced this?Safari crashes all the time. Mostly when I open new tabs. I've tried sending the crash reports to Apple, but the "Send to Apple" button is always greyed out. I used the "Report Bugs to Apple" to send a notice, which I might do every time Safari crashes.
Also, I've tried resetting Safari, emptying the cache, and a number of things. Nothing works. It still crashes or hangs.
EDIT: Here's a crash log. It's quite long:
