Bridge memory issues causing everyone's problems? Maybe???

After opening files Camera Raw files in Photoshop CS3, through the Bridge 2.1.1.9 interface on a MacBook Pro with all the latest updates to Tiger, and editing them, then setting the star rating below the thumbnail, going into File Info and enter all my data, and return to the file thumbnail to click on it to create a dng file, it takes away my ratings... this is sign... I've found that when this happens the next thing is that the preview window shows an odd looking version of my photo and when I open it up and look at the raw settings sure enough, it's applied some setting from a previous session over the top of my work!
This has only been happening recently, so I upgraded my version of Camera Raw to the latest 4.5. Didn't solve anything.
So in reading all the other complaints about Bridge CS3, of which I've had none, I am wondering if there isn't an overriding problem that causes MOST of these, and it just manifests differently on different configurations.
Is there a way to increase memory allocation to Bridge? I've compacted the cache, and that didn't solve my issues. I have the cache set to the mid point... the language is very confusing on it...smaller cache equals better performance (define better). Could this setting solve my issue?

Low system memory issue - caused by Mail?

While I was at work, my wife was using our iMac at home, and she said that a weird error dialog appeared this afternoon that asked her to quit applications, following which the system became unresponsive.
When I came home I found that a lot of running applications were in a hung state (unresponsive and required a Force Quit) so I rebooted the iMac.
I looked in the Console and saw that at 15:39:37 today two errors started repeating at an enormous rate - something like 5000 times per second for the next 5 seconds:

So it looks to me like the Mail app went haywire, the Mac ran low on memory, so OS X made some kind of "Lo-Memory panel" appear to handle it.
A quick search in Google Images revealed that there is such a thing as an OS X low memory error - the exact text of which is "Your system has run out of application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using". It displays a list of running apps so you can quit them. The error looks something like this:

When I showed this picture to my wife she said that is exactly what she saw.
I will report this to Apple on their feedback page. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know. Obviously something that can bring down the entire system like this is not good.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
          A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
          Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
          View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

Format issue causing iBook navigation problems

Hello!
I created an iBook for a client, but some of the default functions of an iBook aren’t working when it’s previewed on iPad. My question is: since the file format seems to be the issue, what can be done to alleviate it?
Problems
When previewing the iBook on the iPad...
Framing features such as navigation bar, book info, bookmark tool, etc. are missing
The pages lack animated page turns
Right and left page edge riffles are missing
When the iPad is turned vertically…
Pages scroll top to bottom instead of left to right as they should
All images disappear
Basically, the iBooks works mostly well in landscape mode but not so much in portrait mode. The client checked other iBooks to compare and the iBook I created is the only one with problems with the interface functions.
Steps Taken To Save & Preview File
Saved the iBook file as an IBA file. I also Exported it as an iBooks file.
Sent IBA and iBooks files to the client to preview on his iPad (I don’t have one so I can’t preview it myself).
The client opened the IBA file using iBooks Author then clicked the “Preview” button.
The IBA file cross-loads to the iPad and the problems can be seen.
The client also attempted to load the IBA and iBooks files on the Book Proofer application (this application does accept IBA and iBooks files), but that didn't work either. The client told me that are some file format issues unrelated to content, leading me to believe that it's a format issue.

Again, sorry, a 'Shared' .ibooks file has the same format as what users download from the store.
You don't need to be in the store to circulate that file. 'private' as defined depends on you. Email that file if possible and/or put it on your own server/dropbox and share the link to trusted individuals.
If you're sending the .iba file to someone that then uses it in iBA, they need to use the 'Shared' menu to generate an .ibooks file, then drop that into iTunes and sync to their device.

Java plug-in 1.4.1 proxy configuration issue causes JTextField TAB problems

I have an applet that has multiple JTextFields in it. I recently updated my Java plug-in to version 1.4.1, and now using TAB to navigate among text fields does not always work when I first bring up a browser and load the applet.
I've found, however, that if I open the Java Console and hit "p" (reload proxy configuration), and then reload my applet (hit Refresh/Reload on my browser), the Tab key works as expected. I did not have this issue with releases prior to 1.4.1.
Any clue on how I can ensure proper proxy configuration upon initial instantiation of the browser? I've seen the problem in both IE 6.0 and Netscape 7.0.
Note that the reloading of the proxy configuration only appears to be necessary once per browser session.

The navigation isn't working. I click in the first text field to give the initial field focus. I then hit TAB and nothing happens. I have a key listener set up for the ENTER key, and this is also supposed to navigate to the next field via:

Result Set Causing out of memory issue

I am having trouble to fix the memory issue caused by result set.I am using jdk 1.5 and sql server 2000 as the backend. When I try to execute a statement the result set returns minimum of 400,000 records and I have to go through each and every record one by one and put some business logic and update the rows and after updating around 1000 rows my application is going out of memory. Here is the original code:

Bridge CS5 suddenly crashing with memory issues

Over and over again, several times a work session, Bridge quits, saying that it has insufficient memory. I have WIndows XP, 4 gigs of ram. Can you point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this problem? DId I change the wrong settings perhaps? Could it have happened when I had to delete my Photoshop prferences? All help will be much appreciated as it's driving me bats~

Memory issues do not necessarily mean RAM. It can also mean
insufficient disk space.
If you do not have at least 20% of free space on your HD you need to eliminate files or get a larger dirve. Also, you may have free space but you need a large block of contiguous space. So delete temp files, and extraneous programs then defrag the HD.

You seem to be using raw JDBC to select all of the records in a single result set, not sure if this may be causing a memory issue. You could try paging through the results instead.
Ans: I have modified the code to get me 1000 records each time and I am getting the ResultSet by using PrepartedStatement instead of regular Statement object.
What type of caching are you using?
Ans: No caching is being used. If you have some thoughts on caching please suggest or put some sample code. Again there is no AppServer is being used, its just a regular java process(Batch process) so I dont know how to do caching in a simple java process.
You may also wish to try the latest 9.0.4 patch release, or try the 10.1.3 version, or the latest EclipseLink 2.0 release.
Ans: Where can I find the latest patch release 9.0.4?

Problem in iterating through huge number of entries ... memory issue

I am having large number of entries in lacs.
I need to check each entry with previous ones , so I need to iterate through the each and every entry previous to current entry.
Here I have put all the entries in arraylist and I am iterating though this arraylist and validating current entry.
As I am using the arraylist for storing all the entries , the system is taking lot of memory because I am putting all in the memory.
Is there anyway to resolve this memory issue?

If you have a hundred thousand entries, to verify all the entries you would need to compare the later entries with the earlier ones such that:
Entry 1 = 100,000 accesses
Entry 2 = 99,999 accesses
Entry 5 = 99,995 accesses
Entry 10 = 99,990 accesses
Entry 99,990 = 10 accesses
Entry 99,995 = 5 accesses
Entry 99,999 = 1 access (only to be compared with the 100,000th entry)
It would then make sense to keep a certain (fixed) amount of entries in memory, those which get accessed the most, then write to file those which get accessed the least frequently. Have a method that can decide, based on the index of the entry, whether to get it from the ArrayList or to read it from the file. That will give you good performance.
BufferedReader would be a good candidate to read the file, because it can skip more bytes at once should you need a line very late in the file. Also consider using RandomAccessFile and seek(entryNumber * ENTRY_SIZE) if your data can be represented with a fixed size in bytes.

Iphone os 3.1 issues, cause of error !?

maybe I am on of a thousound who is experiencing issues for OS 3.1.
I've got the frozen iphone problem,
when trying to unlock the slider after standby.
And just the same for taking calls from standby.
Besides,
my phone won't suddenly dial out .
No ringtone nothing, but the display tells me I am dialing.
I've read that a lot of you have the same problems.
And I searching for a possible cause of this problem.
And I think I've found (one).
My Iphone runs absolutely OK for days, no problem.
But when listening to music from the internal ipod interface,
all these problems occur.
Memory cleans do not solve these issue.
I have to restart.
Can anyone confirm this ?
It seems to be worse with big audio files like podcasts.
BTW: Is Apple working on these problems ?

Several of us are having this problem with VPN and also the App Store. The paste will work ONCE after a hard reset (not sure about a regular reset). Then it will not work again until another reset. Since this problem happens in the App Store, which is an intrinsic part of OS 3.1, the problem is clearly Apple's to fix. Please make sure you file a defect on the Apple Feedback page for the iPhone so that they will look at it and fix it. I would not have upgraded if I had known about this problem in advance because of the VPN paste issue created using the RSA Token app. Now you have to memorize the digits while in the RSA app and then type them into VPN, all in the given time allotted. Not good...

Windows - too much RAM? Is this the root cause of many problems

I know this is going to sound counter intuitive, but I have reason to believe that there are problems with Windows systems with large amounts of memory (4 gb, if not something less than this).
Why? I just recently bought a new notebook - fully maxed out for performance in every conceivable way - including 4 gb RAM.
But since the first day, I noticed a problem with a particular piece of pre-installed software where MSVCR80.DLL would keep crashing everytime specific programs started to run. I liased with the vendor and went through all the usual troubleshooting, plus reinstalled Windows from both the factory config and from original disks more times than I care to remember but the problem remained. They replaced all the hardware, and the problem continues. The vendor tried to reproduce the problems internally but couldn't. (So note, none of these problems are Lightroom problems - I haven't even installed Lightroom on this new machine yet).
About the same time I noticed a couple of mentions of this same DLL in a number of threads on this site:

And reading these, you see people who have 4 or 3 Gb RAM also experiencing weird problems.
Last night I was working through what could be different and decided to rip out one of the 2 Gb RAM modules in my new computer - taking it down to (only) 2 Gb RAM, and suddenly the software that I was having problems with suddenly works correctly. Reinstalled the second RAM module and it stops working and crashes in the same way as did initially. So in this case, the problem is definitely having this much RAM.
So as a test, it would be interesting to see if some of the people experiencing problems in Lightroom (on Windows) with over 2 Gb memory reduce the amount of installed memory and see if the problems in Lightroom goes away as well?
I'm also debating whether the problem is actually a software problem in the MSVCR80.DLL, or whether there is something more sinister in the hardware - because 4Gb RAM doesn't give 4Gb usable RAM because of the mapping of various hardware into memory (video cards for instance) - on my new notebook with Vista it was reporting it had 3.5Gb usable RAM - if you search on the web you find some Vista users with 4Gb RAM showing less than 3Gb usable RAM within Vista - so there are definitely some hardware dependencies going on here as well - some machines with 4Gb RAM might work, and some with different hardware configs with 4Gb RAM might not.
It will be interesting to see what results people get with less memory.

I'd like to thank everyone for trying to help me with this problem, but that's not the reason that I posted the original message.
The problem I'm experiencing is not bad hardware or a faulty software installation. It is a 100% reproducible problem which displays when there is 4 Gb RAM in the machine and doesn't when there is 2 Gb RAM - with no other changes occurring except this change of memory.
The old DLL conflict issue apparently is not so much of an issue with this file these days because each application can have a manifest which describes the precise version of the supporting files and Windows will maintain these seperate versions and present the appropriate version to the correct app. Regardless, this doesn't behave like a DLL conflict because the only change is that of memory.
I agree that 32bit operating systems should not have a problem with 4 Gb RAM, but clearly in my case there is. And in the initial Lightroom topics that I cited where others were experiencing similar issues with the same DLL, and they also had machines with over 2 Gb RAM.
The problem may not be that all machines with over 2 Gb RAM have problems, but there may be a unique set of interactions between various pieces of hardware / software / BIOS / installed software that is causing it on specific configurations. The problem may or may not lie with the actual DLL that is reporting the crash, I just don't know.
The reason I posted this initially was because whilst investigating an unrelated application, I happened upon a strong correlation of specific problems with this DLL across multiple different applications (the security application that I noticed the problem with, reports here in Lightroom, but if you Google you'll find references to a large range of other applications, including PS3), and the common theme for everyone who has had these problems appears that they've had high end machines with over 2 Gb RAM. Further in my case with the relevant security application I'm having problems with I have proof that the problem disappears if you reduce the memory.
My intent was really just to hone the number of scenarios where we know this problem either occurs or doesn't. I'm curious as to:
- anyone who has over 2 Gb RAM who is having problems with Lightroom, and seeing if the same problems occur if they reduced the amount of memory in their system. There are certainly some people on these forums who have been very vocal as to problems - I just want to see if the Lightroom problems these people are experiencing are a sympton of some more fundamental issue.
- anyone who has over 2 Gb RAM but is operating successfully with no problems whatsoever (forums have a selection bias whereby you predominantly hear from people who have problems, not those that don't have problems) - I'd like to balance this out a bit by having people who are having no problems also jump into the discussion.
- anyone who has less than 2 Gb RAM who have had Lightroom report problems with MSVCR80.DLL (this is the control)
If we can narrow down the circumstances in which it occurs, it will be much easier for the developers to be able to reproduce and then trace and eliminate the problem. But if everyone just keeps going "it doesn't work" then we'll never get anywhere.

Out of memory issues with PSE 8

I am using PSE 8 64 bit on a Dell desktop computer with Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 920 at 2.67 GHz. with 8 GB of ram. My operating system is Windows 7, 64 bit.
My problem is that I get out of memory or insufficient ram messages in PSE Editor with some PSE tools when my CPU resource utilization reaches 37 to 38%. In other words, even though my computer is telling me I have almost 4 GB of memory left, PSE is saying it does not have enough memory to complete the operation. It looks to me as if PSE is only using 4GB of my 8 GB of Ram. Is this true and what do I need to do to allow PSE to utilize all of my available ram.

Thanks, that does answer what the problem is, but not necessarily a solution. I like working with 8 to 10 pictures (files) in the editor tray at a time. I make whatever changes needed to each and then group 4 or 5 into an 8.5 X 11 collage. Each picture in the collage is a separate layer and each separate picture may multiple layers of its own. I print the collage on 8.5 x 11 photo paper and then put the page in a photo album. I like the pictures in different sizes, orientations and sometimes shapes, so the album and multiple picture options offered in PSE are not much help. My process eats a lot of memory, which I mistakenly thought, my 8 gb of ram would solve.
Anyway, now that I know the limitations, I can adjust the process to avoid the memory issue and hopefully, a future version of Elements will accommodate 64 bit.
Maybe, I am wondering, do I need to look at other programs or am I missing a PSE function that would make my chore easier.

Jrun.exe Memory Issue

I am using Coldfusion 8 Developer Edition as a testing server
for Dreamweaver website development. I am running Windows Vista
Home Premium and 2 Gig of memory. When I start my computer I run
into memory issues which I have traced to jrun.exe which is a part
of Coldfusion. For maybe the first hour jrun is using well over a
half a gig of member. After that it drops to about 60,000k. Does
anyone know of a way to reduce that?
I am a mid level user with no server admin experience beyond
setting up CF developer edition using mostly default settings. I
have found support articles about this problem, but all of them
were way over my head. Any suggestions need to be very specific and
not in server admin jargon.

You can try reducing the max heap for the java in the
coldfusion administrator to little bit lower value so the garbage
collection might happen sooner. Its not easy to say how much max
heap you should set as it totally depends on your application
usage. Also, you can try to upgrade your java version to see if
that improves garbage collection.

Windows 8.1 Memory Issue

Hi. I have recently upgraded my windows 8 laptop to windows 8.1. It has 4gb of memory. Before i upgraded, my computer worked great. Now, every
once in a while, my computer displays an error message that says something like: 'Windows is running out of memory. To fix this, close and restart open programs'. Closing programs does not work, and my programs crash until I restart my computer. If I go to
task manager, Windows Problem Reporting is open many times. I ran malwarebytes, and nothing came up. Is there a way to fix except for downgrading again? My hard drive has almost 300 gigabytes full.

If the issue doesn’t appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of
the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic half services.

Low memory issue

I have an HP Pavilion 2 Quad Proc 2.5 Ghz. Vista 32 bit home prem, 4 GB DDR2, 512 MB Nvidia 8500GT, Realtek Audio (updated driver), Blu ray read/write drive, Two 500 GB interinal drives 7200rpm SATA 3GB, Virtual mem set to windows control. Program PE7
I shoot video on a Canon SX1 IS. in 1920 x 1080 30f/s h264 MOV files. If I edit less than 4 Min of Video in PE7 all is well. 5 min of video causes low mem warning from PE7. No message from Windows. Adobe tech support said it is a windows virtual memory issue talk to Microsoft, but nothing else. I have HP support but they said it is outside the scope of support. For $ 60 I can get better support one time but no guarantee. I tried Reg cleaners, manual setting virtual mem at 18 GB. That helped a little. Rebooting helps., but in the end I get "program not responding" or other failure messages. I have read other posts but they were talking 40 min of video or more. I have had no problems with video from my old Sony I have edited over 1 1/2 hr. but 5 min of DH video brings it to a halt.Is anybody editing from this model Canon with sucess? I can play video from the camera with HDMI cable and it is beautiful. Any ideas?

I can understand how it would help process time but helping memory is a strange concept. Since less compression means bigger files. Memory management is way beyond my understanding. I have been working with computers since the PET and TRS80 with 2 kb upgrade and I want to use a hammer some days. I feel Adobe has a way to go with Memory management so that we can just open the program and edit video. I can understand taking a long time to process data in virtual memory but why the "program stopped" message? It is as if virtual memory is not used. Also data not used at the moment could be sent to the disk. It would be a lot slower but no memory crash. I can remember running large databases on 8 bit machines with 64 kb of memory. Of course a large database was smaller than one or two sec of video.

Rogers and Shaw ISP are the cause of iTunes Problems

Hi Everyone,
Over the past month Rogers (ISP) in Canada has put some software on their networks that prevents activity for BitTorrents, P2P, IRC, and also along with that is a rule that if you are trying to download a large media file from more then 1 server it will be dropped. When you download a Podcast from iTunes it downloads that file from multiple servers in the background (I confirmed this by watching my cable modem logs). As soon as it tries to use more than 2 different servers for the download, it just stops. That's the reason why Podcast downloads stop at random places - it's the point where a 2nd server is involved in the download. The same issue causes timeouts and cut-offs in the iTunes music store.
Here is the problem - when anyone calls Rogers about the problem they say it is either a router, firewall or Apple problem and they shrug you off.
Hundreds or thousands of people in Canada can no longer get Podcasts or purchase music from the iTunes Music store. This is BAD. Please, Apple, contact Rogers and sort it out. So many people have called Rogers with no luck.
It took a while to find out the problem and a lot of people have no idea what is going on. It isn't related to iTunes 6 - it just happened that Rogers made this change at about the same time as the iTunes 6 release.

I'm also experiencing the same problems using Rogers High-speed here in west Toronto.
If Mr. Brace's assertion is correct then it's absolutely unacceptable for Rogers to just arbitrarily modify their clients' networking mechanism simply because they're trying to manage "BitTorrents, P2P, IRC" etc.
Are we Rogers clients not all subject to enforced bandwidth quotas? Beyond the quota what right does Rogers have to deny my internet usage should that extend to "large media files from more than 1 server"?
Considering the ever-increasing spotlight on the iPod and all things Apple, I'd have to hope that Rogers aren't totally asleep at the helm and realize that they need to address the situation (or disprove it!) before current subscribers vote with their wallets and take their business elsewhere.
I'm going to contact Rogers during business hours tomorrow and have my call escalated as high as I can get it before explaining the situation and asking them what they plan on doing about it - stay tuned... I'm sure that they'll tell me that they've taken care of everything and we're back in business
