Bridge Rebuilding Cache on External Drive Unnecessarily – How Can I Stop It ?

I have Bridge CS4 on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Connected to the laptop is a Firewire hard-drive on which I am storing my images.
For some unknown reason, and only from time-to-time, Bridge wants to rebuild the entire cache in any given folder.
For example, last night I added some new RAW files to a folder, waited until Bridge had added them to the cache cache before closing down. So the cahche was complete. This morning Bridge is rebuilding the entire cache to the folder (as I write) – for ALL the RAW files – thumbnails, previews, and full size extractions. As you can imagine, with a folder containing hundreds of images, this is very tedious; also the hard-drive and laptop get very hot and bothered.
Note: the above is only an example, and the rebuilding appears to occur at any time and under any circumstances (but only when Bridge opens a folder previously cached). BTW this doesn't happen on the Mac's internal drive.
Now, I have selected the 'Authomatically Export Cache To Folders When Possible' option in the Preferences, and checked that the cache file is present in the folder (it is), so this shouldn't – in theory – happen.
Can anyone shed any light on why Bridge keeps rebulding the cache to the external drive, and what I might be able to do to stop it ?

Curt, thanks for your reply.
Tons of disk space ! And the cache is not very large – 130Mb.
Permissions (!??!) – therein lies a ‘mares nest’* of possibilities…
The powering-up/recognition may be something to do with it. I will monitor this and see if I can spot a pattern.
Many thanks for your suggestions. I will report back in due course.

This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

• My one computer's gone for repairs, all my iTunes info is on an external drive. I just bought a new machine, I want to use iTunes on it with my original external drive. How can I do this?

Hi, I have an important question which I need to ask you folks.
For the past four years, I have been using iTunes on my laptop, the only computer I have had to use iTunes. All of my movies, songs, etc are saved to an external hard drive which connects through its USB port.
That laptop is not currently working, and for the past couple of months has been upstate at a friend's house, as he is attempting to fix it.
I just got a new portable tablet capable of running iTunes today. I have not set it up yet has I have been busy at work; but I want to have the tablet have iTunes on it as well under my existing iTunes account, but I am not sure exactly how to go about it. This will be my second computer machine that iTunes will be installed under, and I want to be able to plug into it the external hard drive, The exact same hard drive I have been using on my old computer with all my iTunes information on it.
How do I do it?

If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

• Spotlight on my iMac running snow leopard will not stop indexing the hard drive. How can I stop this?

Spotlight on my iMac (OSX 10.6.8) has suddenly begun indexing the hard drive non-stop, causing very sluggish operation and spinning beach balls. Reinstalling the operating system has not helped, nor has repairing permissions or the disk.

One of the first things that happens when installing a new version of OS X is that the Spotlight search app is setup to index all available hard drives.
The indexing makes it faster and easier for the Spotlight Search app to find things on and off your Mac.
You can either let it take the time it needs to do this (Spotlight will only do this one time, initially) OR if you just can't or want to wait for this to complete, you need to go into OS X System Prefences panel in the OS X Dock, locate the Spotlight icon.
Click the Spitlight icon and another set of menus appear.
Find the menu item dealing the Spotlight indexing and uncheck its checkbox to disable Spotlight indexing.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• Since moving to a new MAC Firefox asks permsion to use various font whilst loading - how can I stop this?

I moved over to a new Apple Mac using a time machine back up. Since then when ever I use Firefox it stops and asks if it's ok to use a font located on an external hardrive. How can I stop this?

I tried reloading FF but had the same problem but maybe I need to completely eradicate any trace of FF first - is there a way of doing this.
I've already moved back to Safari but there are a couple of sites I have to use that don't work properly so I have to revert to FF

• I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died. Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive. How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died. Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive. How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....." You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

• I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
It constantly gets harder.

• How do I move a back up to another external drive and how does the Mac Book then find the new back up?

how do I move a back up to another external drive and how does the Mac Book then find the new back up?
I currently have the back up on a Time Capsule, I want to move it from the Time Capsule to another external hard drive.

Did you read the link to the Pondidni website? You will have to select the Time Machine HDD for the new MBP and the old one in System Preferences>Time Machine:
Ciao.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

after some sorting out your article, I clicked on a question mark with the message find the missing folder. This brought me to a page where I could choose a folder by year and click on it. The question marks disappeared and the photos were available. In some cases I had to click on the year folder for each subfolder by date.
The find missing folders message did not bring me to the finder window in which I could click on folders in the hard drive itself. I appreciate your help big time!!

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.
