Bridge Skips Images on Import

Bridge has started skipping images on import.  I find fewer files than were on the CF disk.  First time I saw this I had set Bridge to delete on import.  Next time, I had to search for missing sequence numbers and reimport.  Out of about 450 images, 22 were missing.  This takes extra time, slows down my import process, and is error-prone.
I have resorted to using Adobe DNGConverter 6.6.0.261 but it is slower and has fewer features than Bridge.
I have applied all the updates to Adobe products as of 2/29/2012.  I am using CS5 with Photoshop & Bridge.  My Sony VIAO PCG-42421L is running Windows 7, 4 GB RAM, all updates applied as of 2/29/2011.  I am importing from 4 GB CF cards from a Canon 30D, images formatted as CR2.  I have set Bridge to convert to DNG and add ID & Copyright metadata.
I have found nothing on this problem in Adobe support or this forum.  Does Adobe have anything to say?  Has anyone else seen this or found a solution or have a better workaround?

Does Adobe have anything to say?
This is a user to user forum, if you want to contact Adobe directly you can find the link on the Help and support section at the main page of the Bridge forum.
Has anyone else seen this or found a solution or have a better workaround?
Not a solution because I never heard nor had this problem and I use Photodownloader a lot for several years now.
But I sure know a better workaround. The option to delete files after import should not even be there to my opinion but certainly it should not be used ever!!
Personally I have set import files in one main folder and on import have Bridge pointed to that folder so the cache is made instantly.  Rename files using yyyymmdd and sequence number (preserve original filename and no subfolders because the date renaming sort the files per date already),  convert to DNG, back up original Raw file and add metadata template.
After having checked the DNG files are correct (showing all thumbs and randomly choose some to see if the HQ preview has build correctly) I start thinking about deleting the files from card, often not on that moment but rather just before a new session. And I never use the delete function but the option to Format the CF card using the camera and the in camera software because that is the place where it should be done
Although I once have 'lost' some files in the early days at the start of this millennium due to not correctly remove from card reader (and they where not really lost but the resource fork or something had lost and therefore the files could not be found but where there still hidden). If we had the knowledge and easy access to recovery software like we have these days it also would not have been a problem then.
So assure you have the files you want (check the content in your computer, I use Mac and with a card reader I can easy access the content in the Finder, no reason why you should not be able to do that in Explorer) and after having copied them manually use the camera to format the card and keep doing so and see if the problem has gone.
Formatting every time instead of deleting has always been my workflow and I never lost the functionality of a CF card. (though I lost a few but with that I mean really lost in the field...)

  • Does iPhoto automatically downsize an image on import?

I am new to Mac. I attended a workshop at an Apple store and was told iPhoto will automatically downsize all images upon import. I use CS3/Bridge to manage my image library but really love iPhotos ability to find images quickly. If I import my existing image files into iPhoto will they ever be resized without my knowledge? I don't want that to happen. I have tried a few tests and all the imported images are the same size in iPhoto as the originals in my old folder structure outside of iPhoto. At the moment I tell iPhoto to "not copy folders to the iPhoto library". Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If you’re new to Macs then I’ll bet you’re using iPhoto 08 (iPhoto Menu -> About iPhoto). You’ve posted on the v5 forum and the problem there is that there are many differences between the versions.
However here’s one thing that is *absolutely constant*
and was told iPhoto will automatically downsize all images upon import.
    *This is utterly untrue*.
Iphoto simply copies the file - a straight byte by byte copy of the actual photo. It makes no changes whatever to the file unless you tell it to.
It has no facility to resize on import, so you can’t even tell it to do that.
What it does do is create a thumbnail of the image for faster display in the iPhoto Window.
At the moment I tell iPhoto to "not copy folders to the iPhoto library".
This is called a Referenced Library and - especially with folks new to Macs - I do not recommend running a Referenced Library
You need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.

  • Batch image numbering/importing CS4

Hello, I have a question about inDesign, I am laying out a book, that is very very big. It will be 3 volumes, and has over 2500 images/photos in it. Each image will be layed out on pages in 1 of 9 different design layout templates (ie some pages have 1 image ranging up to 4 in different layouts), and with a side panel on each page which has the number of each photo on it.
Can anyone suggest the best way to try and automate some of this process?
I know that there is automation for ticket numbering if all the numbering is in exactly the same place, but these images are in different places (9 different configurations).
So I'd like to know tips on doing the numbering in the side panel, which will have sometime 4 numbers, sometimes 3, 2 or 1 number.)
And if there is any faster way to import the image files, I'd love to hear about that too. At present the image files will be named with the same number that will be type set in the side bar. I will probably use bridge to do batch imports for each page, but that will still be over 1000 pages. nightmare. not to mention the 2500 numbers that must be type set differently for every page. nightmare.
Estimates on the time here too would be interesting.
Thanks, would lov to hear any ideas!

Thanks Eugene, but Im not so sure how anchoring the image to a paragraph would help me?
as an example of 1 page, a 4 image page - I have an image in the top right quarter of the page, then 3 other images in the other quaters of the page. then down in the very bottom right, i have pannel wich gives the number of each image.
Then i have 8 other page layouts - some with a large image top half of page, 2 small images bottom half of page, then bottom right, a small pannel with 3 numbers in it.
    ect.
    Also:
'And you could automate the layouts using Data Merge'
    - was thinking about this too, but isnt that only usefull if each page has the same layout?
Im dealing with 9 differnt layouts.
If i undersand merging correctly (and I dont really) would i need to creat 9 differnt layouts, then go through by hand, copy + pasting pages from each 9 documents into 1 master document?
Thanks again, keen to hear more thoughts!

  • Apply settings to images upon import

I am using LR 5.  Is there a way to apply settings to images upon import?  For example, I want to set noise reduction to X if an imported image has a ISO setting between 1000 to 1250, from camera A with lens B.  Right now I am applying the changes manually by using the metadata filter, but it will be great if the same settings can be applied upon import (to save time)

To set detail settings based on ISO, it's best to use a plugin (in my opinion), otherwise you have to mastermind which ISO's your camera is capable of having, and save a default for each, then if you want to change you have to go through the process again.
Some cameras can have dozens of different auto-ISO values, and it's best if you don't skip any of them.. granted it's not so bad if you never shoot auto-ISO .
    Consider:
    * ISO Detailer (author: me), or
    * Bulk Develop (author: Jeffrey Friedl)
instead - both plugins are essentially free.

  • Skipped images when editing?

When I am looking at images (in a film roll) in the library...and I move to the next one by clicking on the right arrow, it often skips over five or ten or fifteen images to the beginning of the next film roll. I can get out of edit and go back in to start again on the skipped images until the program 'decides' to skip a whole bunch again.
    Any thoughts on this problem?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    stg123:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Hadn't heard of that issue before. Try clearing out iPhoto's cache folder inside the User/Library/Caches folder. Next would be a rebuild of the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and following the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is there any way to get the height/width of an image before importing it in the indesign document.

    Hi All,
I need to obtain an image's attributes such as dimensions (height, width in pixels) without placing image in indesign document.
I have full path of the image (say abc.jpg is stored at c:\my pic\abc.jpg).
I have obtained the IDFile for this image, tried getting size using GetFileSize() which correctly return size in bytes.
Is there any way to get the height/width of image without importing it in the indesign document.
Please, give me some hints. I have spent quite a lot time digging in CHM. I have searched in FileUtils, IDFile API's but found no method which serves this purpose.
At this point I am clueless where to search next.
    Any help will be appriciated.
Just a point to mention, I am able to get image height and width for an image in indesign doc though Its not my requirement.
    Thnx,
    D.

You might be able to examine the contents of the PlaceGun after calling kImportAndLoadPlaceGunCmdBoss without actually placing the image in a document. Not sure, but would be worth looking at.
Otherwise you will probably have to write platform specific code, ideally with a generic platform-independant wrapper (see SDKSamples/paneltreeview/PlatformFileSystemIterator).
For the Mac, look at CGImageGetWidth() etc., not sure what the best option is for windows.
Perhaps Quicktime could provide you with a platform independant solution.

  • Opening Bridge preview images in Photoshop CS4

When I click on Open to open an image previewed in Bridge, the image opens in Paint. I try to click on Open With and am given a menu of Paint (default), BullGuard (my antivirus)FS resizer and Explorer, with no means of changing those. What can I do to change this so as to open in Photoshop?

Thanks for that Curt. However, the method in the link does not work for me, but I found an answer for myself: for any others with this problem, do the following:
Bridge > preferences > file type associations > jpeg > click on arrowhead > browse > select CS4

  • IPhoto darkens images when importing

I've just been importing some photos into iPhoto 6 and I've noticed that quite a few pictures have been noticeably darkened, and I have no idea why! I checked in the folder and the darker photo does not appear in the folder of 'Modified' photos, but in the 'Originals' folder.
If I open up the same image from my desktop in Preview and comare it side-by-side with the same image I imported into iPhoto I can immediately see the difference. The problem is really a darkening in areas of shadown.
Is iPhoto somehow thinking it is 'enhancing' my photos, but this just doesn't work on some photos or what? I just want the imported image to look identical to what I see when opening the file with Preview on the very same computer. That's not really asking too much.

I've figured out my own problem. iPhoto was set up to assign photos with a ColorSync profile and this profile made the photo look darker.

  • Rotate images DURING import

To be able to rotate images DURING import would be a nice feature. I can do this with Apple's Image Capture. They are imported wih the rotation I have requested, and this show in the icons too.
I like popping a folder open and view my images in icon view. I don't have to open a program at all. It's quick and efficent way to view my images, but also the orientation is correct right from the beginning with the original. Maybe one more step in the import process, for those of us who don't mind it, BUT it's also one more step I DON"T have to do in Lightroom, Photoshop, or any other program. And the rotataion in Lightroom are temporary to the eye anyway.
This is good feature/option to add to the import. Lightroom ROCKS. It just elimanted a multi-step, multi-software import process. Almost. The "rotate during import" feature would seal the deal. It's a big deal to me. Like the Apple Image Capture, you could place rotation icons on each image in the preview window. If you added that, man, solid gold!
    thanks,
    Craig

    DW Harrison:
Sure, I get that, but I can understand how non-destructive editing is useful in image adjustments where later you may regret having added too much saturation in the reds, so you're glad you can go back to the original. But who wants a portrait image rotated in landscape orientation EVER? It's a personal preference, and, no, not a priority in my opinion.
    Ian:
You may think your post was enlightening, but, perhaps to someone else. Surely not me. I've always known what the 'real cause' is -- some software, i.e. WEB BROWSWERS, ignore the EXIF tag. Hence, my question was more of a philosophical one: why have portrait images rotated sideways, only to have aware applications ON-THE-FLY rotate them according to the EXIF tag? Why not just have the original file re-written in different dimensions?
For that matter, I specifically spelled out 'why can't... [the file be] rewritten from 800x600 to 600x800'. Hence I find your response 'They will be if the rotation tag is set in the camera' pretty darn irrelevant. No, they WON'T be rewritten rotated. Only by Graphic Converter if you have the option selected, or other applications that don't come to mind right now.

  • No images to import

Help. I just returned from a big trip with loads of pictures and when I connected my camera one SanDisk worked great but when I put the other in iPhoto says "no images to import". I can see the images on my camera, though? Any ideas?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4)   Nikon 4600 Coolpix

    Hi there,
I would try it again, remove and reinsert the suspect card. If it still does not work, if I had another computer I would try that one. If that doesn't work, but you can still see the images through your camera. I would bring the camera and card to the nearest reputable photo lab and have them try to copy images onto a CD... also, make sure batteries are fresh.

  • Settings added when when images are imported

When I import images into Lightroom3 the images have already been tweaked.  How do I turn off the setting as the images are imported?  Second, when I attempt to send images to Photoshop for editing Lightroom makes a copy, how can I stop this fom happening?

Two things to avoid that LR applies "tweaking" on import.
    1) Make sure that the <Apply Auto-tone adjustments> box is unchecked. You find it under <Preferences> in the <Presets tab>.
    2) In the Import Dialog on the right hand side, in the panel <Apply During Import>, make sure that <Develop Settings> shows <None>.
There is no way to avoid making a copy when you open a RAW-file in PS. PS can not save a file as a true RAW-file; there is a Photoshop-RAW but that is not a true RAW-file like the one that your camera creates.Since PS can save your edits only in a different format than true RAW, by necessity a copy has to be made.
If you have JPG's in LR (or TIFFs or PSD's) and want to edit them in PS, you can choose <Open Original> and then no copy is made. But when you open these as <Edit a Copy with LR Adjustments> then again a copy is made.

  • How can I re-name a single image after importing it to Aperture?

I am having a problem renaming a single image after importing it - I would have thought it would be simple!  Does anyone know how this can be done?

    Hi RQ,
    Straight out of the manual
    To rename masters
In the Browser, select an image or group of images.
Choose Metadata > Batch Change (or press Command-Shift-B).
In the Batch Change dialog, choose a naming convention from the Version Name Format pop-up menu to specify how you want the masters named. For example, choose Version Name from the Version Name Format pop-up menu to have your master filenames changed to match the names of the corresponding versions in Aperture. If you choose a custom name format, enter the name you want in the Custom Name text field. For more information about naming files, see Automatically Naming Your Imported Images.
Select the Apply to Master File(s) checkbox, then click OK.
The master files corresponding to the selected images are renamed. For more information about working with the Batch Change dialog, see Batch Changing Metadata.
Hope that is what you are after.

  • Partial rotation of images when importing...

I'm wondering how to stop Lightroom from "squaring up" my images when I import them.  Attached is a screen shot to illustrate.
I also can't find any consistentency, if I import the same image three times it will be as above twice but not on the third time!
I'm wondering if this is a metadata thing?
BTW camera is a Nikon D600.
    With thanks in advance,
    -Simon

If this is only happening to a few of the images on import it is most likely something related to your camera. If ALL of the Imported images exhibit the issue then there are two things in LR that could cause this to happen:
    1) You are applying a Develop preset on Import that has  Lens Corrections> Manual> Rotate tool setting other than '0.'
    2) Your LR 'Default Develop Settings' has a Crop Angle tool or Lens Corrections> Manual> Rotate tool setting other than '0.'
To check this import one of the images from CF card that shows the rotation. Examine the Crop Angle tool and Lens Corrections> Manual> Rotate tool settings to determine which one is being applied. From inside the Develop module with the imported image still rotated hit the master 'Reset' button at the bottom of the right-hand Develop panel. This applies your LR 'Default Develop Settings.'
    a) If the image is still rotated you may have inadvertently updated your LR 'Default Develop Settings' in the past with the image rotated. To correct this simply hit the master 'Reset' button, reset both the Crop Angle tool and Manual Rotate tools to '0,' go to toolbar Develop> Set Default settings, and select 'Update to Current Settings.'
    b) If the image is not rotated you are probably applying a Develop preset that was inadvertently created with the image rotated. You will need to recreate this preset making sure Lens Corrections> 'Transform' is unchecked. This is the only Develop preset setting that will rotate the image as in your example.
If neither a or b fixes the issue you can try resetting your LR Preferences file:

iphoto is blacking out vertical images when importing. how do i fix this?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
