Bridge slow to focus

What causes photos to come into focus so slowly when first opening in Bridge?  Using Bridge CS4 as well as Photoshop CS4 on a Power Mac G5. 10.5.8.
Thanks.

Hi Michael.
That depends on when you are referring to. When you import files into Bridge the program first sorts the files into the order specified in the 'Filter' panel. Next it creates the image thumbnails - this can take a considerable time if you have 'High Quality Thumbnails' ticked in Bridge Preferences, as Bridge then has to create it's own colour managed thumbnails rather than use the ones embedded in the imported files. The time to create the high quality thumbnails is also increased when indexing RAW images, as they contain more data.
Once the initial indexing and creation of thumbnails is complete for the folder then subsequent openings of the folder should be much faster.
If you have a folder containing several hundreds of images this initial indexing can be a pain, so I usually go off and do something else.
BTW, if you interrupt Bridge while it's going through this initial indexing of a folder then it will attempt to resume next time the folder is accessed, so it's better to let it finish and get it over with - you can tell where Bridge has got to by the '%' indicator at the bottom left of Bridge.

  • PSE8 slow in focusing

Under Win7/64 my PSE8 is VERY slow to focus, especially certain images.  Some focus immediately, others take over 2 minutes, then if you go forward and backward, they are out of focus again.  Just R-clicking focuses fuzzy immediately.  Auto Analyzer on or off makes no difference, but basically my PSE8 cannot be used to display full screem images.  The program screen in the Control Panel has no "repair" option.   What to do??
If I go to PSE9 or PSE10 - would my catalog and keywords be compatible?  Or is there an incompatibility issue?
I hope somebody can help.  My catalog in PSE8 is very important to me and contains 20,000 images.

I am not sure about your first question. I suspect PSE10 would be better suited to Win7/64. Two factors may explain part of the problem : the default size of the thumbnails stored in the database and the jpeg saving mode (progressive or standard...). The size of the picture plays also its part.
For your second question, it's easy to convert catalogs and keep all tags etc.

  • CS6 E Bridge Slow to load thumbnails, 'building criteria'

When Bridge opens on the folder it was last opened/closed in, it takes a long time to load, constantly 'building criteria' as if all the images are newly imported. I've searched the forums, have tried all the tweaks and settings, but it's still iceberg slow.  Bridge CS5 is noticeably quicker, as if the cache info is being read immediately. CS6 is behaving as if the cache file has been deleted. It hasn't. I have tried the "flush the cache" to see if maybe it's corrupted. No joy. I have boosted cache size. No joy. I've compacted, automatically exported cache to folders, everything... Nothing seems to fix the snail slowness.
All Adobe updates have been applied.
    i7-2600s @2.80GHz
    8 gb DDRw ram
    Nvidia GeForce GT420 1gb DDR3
    6+ tbs hd space.

I could understand the glacial slowness if the beta version had also been so slow. Or if CS5 Bridge was also as slow.
Did not read this whole (long) thread but in general when a previous version of Bridge did work faster then the following this almost certainly is related to your system itself.
While building criteria in filter panel has a mind of its own and especially when opening a second window to fast (when first window is just finished caching or building filter panel) it may take ages. closing this window and open a new one usually succeeds.
However when this always takes a long time the problem seems related to the cache (most Bridge problems are...)
Purging cache using preferences or menu commands is not always the correct solution. Using Bridge CS5 and PS CS6 is also not the perfect solution.
If you can spare the time you should consider a proper back up of custom settings, actions tools, keywords, templates etc. and a complete reinstall.
I don't have the correct info for Windows and searching on Adobe.com isn't easy anymore. Here are some old Knowledge base articles (it's about CS4 but changes are locations are still the same)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/move-actions-presets-workspaces-photoshop.html
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-functions-names-locations-1.html
and also read about the Adobe Cleaner Tool and decide if this is an option for you.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
    If you decide to reinstall:
Deactivate the software and use the official uninstaller that comes with the application itself and then use the clean tool for Adobe:
Double check if your Cache folder has been deleted (I'm on Mac, don't know the location for Windows but on Mac it is in the user library caches folder)
Install CS6 again. Obvious you have to set your custom preferences again and also need to recache your files but if you have a main folder with many subfolders containing the files just select the main folder and in the menu View select 'show items for subfolders' and let it do it's caching overnight.
In my experience every new version of CS has been faster and more stable (well, except the disaster CS3 version for Bridge...) then its predecessor.

  • Batch saving in bridge slows down my computer

Using PS CC 2014 and Bridge on an iMac with 8gb ram.  I open 20 or so images in camera raw, then select all and do a save as for low res web images.. The process is painfully slow (takes about 20 minutes)...then my computer is painfully slow for the next 30 minutes or so..  This only happens when I perform this function.  All other applications run fine with no slow downs.  I don't remember this happening in CS 3 bridge.  I'm running Mountain Lion and have plenty of hard drive memory.. This is most definitely a software issue.. Any suggestions would be appreciated..

The doctor told me if it hurts don't do it.  Try using Photoshop and its image processor script to see if it works any better.  Do not even open or have the bridge automatically loaded.  Remove all of Bridges overhead.

  • CC Bridge slow-.  adjustment brushes not showing size, adjustments when done blind are slow to react

I am running Imac 2.7 GHz    16 gb ram    600 gb hard drive available
adjustment brushes not showing size, adjustments when done blind are slow to react.

Bridge is far more than a file browser.   Bridge does what lightroom does.
When working with Raw  files, there are tools,   **adjustment brushes** that allow you to dodge and burn raw files.
These brushes are size adjustable and now with CC, I can not see the size of the tool I am using.
So you might want to look at Bridge differently, as it is a very powerful tool.
Anyone else have a similar experience with CC version of Bridge?

  • Bridge slow to start

Recently I noticed that when starting bridge it has become slow to appear on the screen. Did adobe make any recent change to it. Usually it takes about 2 seconds dues to my ssd and now it's roughly 6-10.

Although I have still not much experience with SL I think first thing to try
is delete the Bridge3 plist file from the user library preference folder.
Then start Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences.
There are more files with preferences from Bridge hidden deep down some
where that I still am not able to trace ( also did not look very much, those
2 options work most of the time when in trouble)
There is also the option to delete the cache file for Bridge manual to the
trash (user lib/caches/Adobe/BridgeCS4/ and then grab both the cache file
and the other file and drag it to the trash (or outside the library in case
    you want to hold it)
Remember to quit Bridge every time before deleting from library (but since
it does not start that seems obvious...)
In case of deleting the cache file you will need to recache every file
again, again obvious but I thought I mentioned it anyway
I installed a new hard drive then, mirrowed all on the old drive to the new
one.  All of the software programs work fine - except Adobe Bridge, which will
not open .  I removed Bridge, and then re-installed, which made no differance
    at all.  Any suggestions ?

  • Bridge slow to open folders with many files

Running Bridge CS3 on XP with 2GB of RAM, if I attempt to open a folder with, say, 80 or more RAW files, each about 6-7 MB, Bridge takes 20 minutes or more, or maybe even locks up. But if I split the folder into two subfolders, each with no more than 40 files, Bridge opens them up one at a time relatively quickly. Have others experienced this, and is it simply a limitation of Bridge or do I need more memory or processing power?

    Hi Michael.

  • Bridge slow to open - why?

Opening Bridge - shift/cmd/o - takes a very long time, 1min. 15secs. Before I installed Epson software it was instant. I've removed as much Epson dreck I can; is there anything else I can do?

Never, ever run a program such as MacSweeper, MacKeeper, MacDefender, etc., on a Mac,
If you really want a good maintenance application for your Mac try Cocktail (here is some info: http://www.maintain.se/cocktail ) that can run automatically on a daily base repairing permissions, rotating logs and clearing caches, pure maintenance and safe to use, keeps your Mac very healthy.
I know MacKeeper has a very aggressive advertisement campaign but I fully agree with the statement Station Two provided you.

  • Bridge slow to assign keywords

I've had a lot of trouble assigning keywords to images.  If I grab a group of say 40 images and assign a keyword, it will act very slow and in the end will not assign the keyword to all the images.  It is almost like it gives up.  I am working on a brand new macbook pro, so shouldn't be an issue of hardware.  Thoughts?

    Exactly the same issue
It is not always easy to use the keywords in a fast way, and depending on amount and file size it can take some time to save the files. It is annoying that each time you add or click a key word the saving starts and also background saving for keywords is not working, you should wait for the selected files to be finished before selecting other files. It is indeed not very productive I'm afraid

Bridge is more of processor dependant function than RAM dependant.

  • Premier Pro Extension to Bridge causes Bridge to slow to Crawl and Lockup

I was prompted in Bridge CC install the Premier Pro CC extension, which I did. Now Bridge slowed to a crawl and locksup.  the program is now unusable.  I can still use Bridge CS6 which works perfectly.
How do I deinstall the Premier Pro extension from Bridge and/or reinstall Bridge from the Creatrive Cloud app (currently I do not see the option to reinstall a CC app from the Creative Cloud app).

I know nothing about adding extensions.  How did you get prompted to install an extension for PP?
But have you read and followed this doc? http://help.adobe.com/en_US/extensionmanager/cs/using/WSAEEA8A5A-A2A3-42a1-B468-07E2EAEC06 FC.html

updated to new 2014 cc. In bridge when I go to tools/Photoshop/Image Processor....I get this message "adobe photoshop 2014 CC has quit working" Anyone have a fix for this??

I use a  windows 7 pro and have no problem like that from bridge cc when I select a thumbnail then use menu Tools>Photoshop>Image Processor..  I see Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 start up then I see the Image processor dialog and that one file is selected in the bridge I the complete the dialog and click run.  The image files are created. Photoshop remains open after the image files are create with no open documents. I need to click on the bridge in the task bar to bring bridge back into focus.
    What does you system configuration?

    jugenjury,
Here is a post in thead "Bridge Slow to load thumbs, building criteria", where Bridge constantly rebuilds thumbnails.  An interesting theory and seems to have some evidence to back it up.  Do you have Generate 100% Previews Checked?    J&K thinks this is problem in certain instances.

Discovered today, 21 May 2013. HOPEFULLY, the ANSWER!!
    Open BRIDGE
Select THUMBNAIL OPTIONS from the icon on the address bar at the right/top of the screen.
This should have HIGH QUALITY PREVIEWS checked.
    Check GENERATE 100% PREVIEWS.
    Immediately UNCHECK GENERATE 100% PREVIEWS
This should reset the registry key that causes BRIDGE to continuously reload 100% previews of thumbnails!
A further symptom that this is occurring is that once the folder has been re-cached by Bridge (before doing the above), all the image files in that folder will have 100% previews already (no "Loading 100%" when the spacebar has been pressed and a left-click on the image to load the 100% view), even though this switch is un-checked.).
It appears that something causes BRIDGE to set this flag in the registry (incorrectly), while showing the flag as not set in the visual user interface. Setting and un-setting the flag causes the registry key to be correctly re-initialised.
I have encountered this on two PCs running CS6. On my own PC, re-installing CS6 to fix the loss of the connection between BRIDGE and PHOTOSHOP also corrected the above problem, so it appears to be an intermittent fault when CS6 is installed. Sometimes the registry flag is initialised correctly, and sometimes it is not.
The other occurrence was on a friend's PC. That PC has also lost the connection between Bridge and Photoshop, so it could be that the registry "corruption" causes both problems. The continuously loading thumbnails (and displaying the message "Building Criteria ... " while Bridge does this) appear to be resolved by performing the above action (or by re-installing CS6). That PC's owner has now re-loaded a whole swag of his image folders in Bridge. Some have needed to re-cache the thumbnails. When this has been done once (relatively quick, now that Bridge is not re-building 100% previews), returning to that folder loads the Bridge database and thumbnails for that folder almost instantly.
On my own PC, opening a folder containing 900 image files (450 .DNG with original raw embedded + 450 large JPEGs, with user-applied metadata, takes less than 5 seconds). Changing this switch for an open folder immediately precipitates the long process of generating 100% previews for that folder. This is PAINFULLY slow! This operation can only be cancelled by re-setting the switch back to un-checked.
A study of two PCs doth not a representative sample make, I know; but it does seem to validate the theory.

  • How do i add buy now buttons for paypal on thumbnails in Adobe Bridge photoalbums

I have a series of photographs which i am selling online. I have found Bridge to be wonderful in creating a photoalbum but can't add the buy now button from paypal as I can in Dreamweavers albums

Nor should you. Bridge is merely focused on processing images. Whatever limited HTML code it spits out is solely to the purpose of allowing others to view your image collections online. nothing more. Bridge has no graps of web design. Still, I don't really see your problem. Nothing stops you from copy&pasting different peices of code together or looking for alternate solutions with dynamic JavaScript or Flash based galleries as well as using PHP-based content managemnt systems for spitting out hundreds of pages based on a server template... if you get my meaning: It's more of a problem with your workflow and placing expectations on something that never was meant to be used that way.

  • Cropping to an edge confuses Adobe Bridge?

I use Abobe Bridge as the host application for Camera Raw. For me, it makes much more sense than hunting for images from Photoshop.
I think it's been at least three years—probably longer—since I noticed that Bridge has a habit of extracting some previews when they should already be cached, every time I bring Bridge to the foreground. I tried to ignore it, but as the number of images in the Content panel increases, so it seems that the number of repeat extractions increased. If you are dealing with hundreds of images at once, this can place a heavy load on the computer. An older computer can really struggle. Even with my super duper new computer, the 8 virtual CPUs can shoot up to 50% usage for 10 seconds every time Bridge gets focus because of this issue. And, since Camera Raw 7.3, the situation has got worse.
Adobe Bridge uses Camera Raw to extract Raw previews. And today I made a major discovery (major for me anyway):
Removing cropped images from the Bridge Content panel stops repeat extractions.
One of my folders contained a lot of cropped images—some straightened, some transformed—and every time I brought Bridge to the foreground the computer fan would wind up as 40 or so repeat extractions would appear to occur. As an experiment, I opened all of the cropped images in Camera Raw 7.2 and adjusted them so that there was space around the crop, and they didn't rest against the edge of the original image anywhere. The repeat extractions stopped completely.
I don't know why Bridge is having a problem with cropped images, but it is on my computer. Maybe it is something to do with the XMP data of cropped images. Has something changed between 7.2 and 7.3 in this respect?

    Yammer,
Thanks for such a comprehensive reply.
Sorry for the delay in responding but I have been playing around with your settings and it has taken awhile to get to grips with the anomalous consequences I've noticed.
Preliminaries: My test folder comprises a copy of 13 .CR2 images from which all previous Develop Settings were removed followed by removal of the.XMP sidecars and finally a Purge Cache for the folder. In the Bridge Preferences\Cache - 'Keep 100% Previews In Cache' is Unselected and 'Automatically Export Cache To Folders When Possible' is Selected.
Step 1: duplicate your "altered defaults" (3rd last paragraph in your post #17) for all 13 images.
Caused no problems when switching focus away from Bridge entirely or between folders in Bridge. However, closing and reopening Bridge from the test folder initiated new thumbnail extractions (together with 1 cache export - expected). The weird thing is that, AFAICT, there were only 7 extractions. It happens pretty fast with only 13 images but I did it a number of times and am confident that the number did not exceed 8. And here's something quite unexpected: the same problem occurs, with the same number of extractions, when closing and reopening Photoshop (Ps) whilst Bridge has its focus on the test folder.
Step 2: remove automatic lens corrections (for the benefit of others, not you Yammer: Unselect Lens Corrections\Profile\Enable Lens Profile Corrections). I chose this as my initial variation of your defaults because it is not normally one of mine.
This stops the repeating extractions when switching focus away from or within Bridge (which was never there anyway) but also after closing and reopening Bridge and or Ps.
Step 3: add back automatic lens corrections.
Again, no problem when switching focus within or away from Bridge, but the repeated extractions, with the same number, return after closing and reopening Bridge and or Ps (whilst the focus in Bridge is on the test folder).
So, at least for me, contrary to what I believed in my post #10, the re-extractions problem is not resolved, and it seems likely to be related to, if not caused entirely by, whether or not you have selected lens corrections.
Don't know whether any of this helps you, Yammer, but maybe a starting point for further investigation?
