Bridge To Nowhere - Try Xnview

Constant freeze-ups, lock-ups-- and not just of Adobe Bridge either, the darned thing locks up my entire PC about every fourth or fifth time I switch previews of short WMV video clips, or even simply switch the application focus: from Bridge to the Desktop (or whatever, even Windows Task Manager), then back to Bridge.
System config:
S/W: CS3, Bridge V. 2.1.1.9
H/W: HARDWARE: WindowsXP SP2, Intel Core duo Quad 2 6600 CPU 2.4GHz 3.5Gb RAM, nVidia Quadro FX 3450/4000 video card, Creative SB X-Fi sound card
Well, no wonder it locks everything up. Windows Task Manager/Performance Panel shows that merely switching the application focus from the Desktop back and forth to Bridge briefly spikes my CPU to 100% usage each time I try to invoke Bridge! That's madness. And arrogant programming.
The root of the problem seems to be in the PREVIEW panel. Disabling Preview restores good performance. The only problem with that is: What's the point of having Bridge for videos if you can't use it to preview your clips? A work-around is to set the default video viewing application to Windows Media Player or Quick Time or whatever, disable Bridge's native Preview panel, then double-click on a thumbnail and "preview" it in the default video viewer. Seems to work OK with Windows Media Player. But what's the point?
THERE IS BETTER SOFTWARE OUT THERE--TESTED, STABLE, RELIABLE, LIGHTWEIGHT, HONEST, AND BEST OF ALL, COMPLETELY FREEWARE. I've used it for five years without any problems, any advertising or any kind of hassle at all. It's called XnView, at XnView-dot-calm. It will blow you away as a slide sorter, batch renamer, batch photo editor and general dog's body of an images manager. Try it, you'll like it... a whole lot better than one more Adobe scam: a lame span that won't scan.

If you're a Firefox user and you just want a speedy (and very cool looking) image viewer try the PicLens Add-on.

In Adobe Bridge, when I try to open my camera raws, I get a pop up stating"Bridges parent application is not active.  Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launced at least once to enable this feature."  What the heck?  I have a PC and haven't had problems before.. I have adobe cloud and pay my monthly bill...

Have you opened Photoshop or any other Adobe app that Bridge works with?  You need to do this if you've upgraded PS or just signed up for CC.

  • Adobe Bridge to nowhere

Missing big time from Adobe MAX: Adobe Bridge. What will it be? Upgrade it or terminate it?
I’d really like to know what will happen to Adobe Bridge, probably the worst product Adobe has ever produced. Sadly, there is nothing else comparable elsewhere, and so I must use it constantly.
I’ve learned to put up with its sluggish++ performance, reliable ability to crash 10+ times a day and the painful building and re-buildings and re-re-building of its cache.
For I long while I used Extensis Portfolio (the Old Macromedia/Adobe "Fetch") but the stand-alone version of that App has been replaced by a new “server” version that, at $2K per license, is unjustifiably expensive.
Adobe Bridge, then, has NO competition and, at the same time, it barely works …
So, can anyone offer a slight glimpse of hope for the future? (No, Lightroom, does not cut it as it only deals with raster images)
Will Adobe fix Bridge or is it, ultimately, a "Bridge to nowhere"?
    Thank you.

I have had Bridge from CS4 to the present CC and have not experienced multiple crashes in a day. I use it on the PC and Mac. I'm thinking there are other factors involved. Aside from prefs, there are startup scripts and other things you need to investigate. I wonder if it's just doing this on your one machine or several.
I suspect something is making it a mad skunk, and finding out what is going can get you back on track. You will also need to check with the Bridge forum and talk with experienced forum members who can assist you far better. Here's the link.

  • I have the Photoshop CC/Lightroom CC package.  In Creative Cloud It says Install beside Bridge, instead of Try Me.  Can I use it?

The question above (and below) asks it all I think.:
I have the Photoshop CC/Lightroom CC package.
In Creative Cloud It says Install beside Bridge, instead of Try Me.  May I use it?

Of course you should use it.
Bridge is an integral part of Photoshop, even though it now acts like a separate application.  In its first iterations, Bridge was called simply The Photoshop File Browser.  That is all it is, a file browser that shows you what files you have, and which hands your files to the appropriate application, whether that be Photoshop, Camera Raw, Lightroom, Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign or even MS Word.
Bridge does not open, edit manipulate or save any files.

  • Bridge CS3 will not install

My Bridge CS3 will not install on my new Intel duo core iMac.  It worked on my earlier iMac, but when PhotoshopCS3 was moved and installed on the new one, Bridge was nowhere to be seen.  I have repaired permisisons, reinstalled PS CS3, and looked for Internet advice.
I would really like to continue to have the Bridge in the CS3.
Am I  going to have to rely on my new Lightroom Developer for its Camera RAW functions and for renaming my files?  I liked the Bridge RAW converter very much.  The old Bridge is still on my machine, but its renaming functions don't suit me at all,  and for some reason it is refusing to open my non-RAW files.

I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.  I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.  This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations.
Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.  Note that this suggestion begins with "I still advocate…", not "Apple recommends…".
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help.  Try it anyway, though.
====       Additionally,  if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.  If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388  Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large. Also, from:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
NOTE: There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction.  The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.    Other, more reliable reports indicate that this seems to have been fixed in the current version of Leopard.
In any event, Repairing Permissions and/or running the Cron Scripts cannot hurt.
If you have DiskWarrior, run it regularly too.  It can't hurt either, and it often improves stability and performance.

  • Missing Bridge cs5?

So I purchased the student edition of production premium cs5 the other day, and while using ps today i tried to play around with minibridge, only to discover that bridge was nowhere to be found on my computer. Spotlight search turned up nothing. I installed every program off the hard copy, so i'm just kind of confused as to what happened. Any ideas? and also, I'm not really sure how to go about getting it on to my computer since it is not a stand alone program on the install disk. probably a simple issue, and fix, but at the same time, still a bit dumbfounded.

-one thing that might be complicating this: i downloaded the trial version of
cs5 master collection when it came out just to mess around, and instead of
uninstalling it when i was done, i trashed and deleted it like a dummy.
That is indeed complicating things. Always a bad idea to delete apps your
self when it is recommended to use the provided uninstaller...
However, you might want to try this. In the help menu use the deactivate
option. The suite should Quit after this but if not quit all applications
    from the suite.
Be sure to back up your presets, (actions tools etc) and third party plugins
    if you have them.
    See also this KB article:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82893.html
After this look for the uninstaller, usually in one of the main apps folder
in your Application folder but sometimes in the utility folder. Open the
uninstaller and choose uninstall the whole suite with options erase serial
    number and remove preferences.
Then go to this page to download the CS5 clean tool (if the link does not
    work Google it):
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs5clean.html
Use this tool. Then do system maintenance, whatever tool you have or use is
fine but also use the repair disk permissions option (the default Apple Disk
Utility in your utility folder does this also for you).
Then reinstall the whole suite, activate it and try again.
Seems a lot of work but you can do this within half an hour

  • Adobe Bridge CS3 not opening Photoshop Image Processor

I selected one, four, and multiple pictures in Bridge to reduce the file size of jpgs. I went to Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor. Nothing happened. Photoshop did not open. That got me to thinking that sometimes while I am in Photoshop Bridge won't open either. Any ideas on resolving issue of "Bridge not opening Photoshop Image Processor" would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Curt Y, Everything is checked in the "Startup Scripts," including Bridge (twice) and Photoshop (twice). Not sure why duplicate entries but there are.
If you mean that you have two of the same versions (both CS3) in there that indicates there is something wrong with your install
If you have any suggestions regarding being able to access the Image Processor to resize pictures and such without first opening Photoshop, I'd greatly appreciate it. If not, the work around will have to suffice.
My first goal would be to reset the preferences for both PS and Bridge and then try again

  • Bridge crashes when hitting spacebar to go into preview mode.

    Hello there,
So, whenever i've been in Bridge for a little while and want to do a full preview mode by hitting the spacebar I get the dark grey screen and after awhile "the spinning beach ball of death" appears. This continues until I have to force quit Bridge. When I restart bridge and try to do a new preview right away the same problem occurs imeditly.
I've tried to delete all the preffs both manually and automatically by holding down the option key during start up, but nothing helps. I've also installed the latest updates.
I'm on a pretty new Macbook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel i5 bought this summer with a SSD harddrive and 4gb of RAM if that is of interest.
Am I way off if I think it could have to do with the graphics card?
Well I'm thankful if anybody has solution for this.
    Best,
    Per

Deleting prefs manually seems to be OK although I personal would not bother
    about the last workspace
    > I don't really understand this part you wrote.
"What setting do you generally have for Bridge preview, always high Quality
or on demand or embedded previews
In Bridge Path Bar top right there are two small checker board icons. The
left one is just a shortcut for prefer embedded previews that only let you
cache the thumbs. A quick way to view the content of a non cached folder and
have the option to glance through thumbnails without having the need to wait
for all the previews to be build.
The right one gives you 3 options, first prefer embedded (same as left icon
and in fact is double but there are still more strange things in Bridge
    regarding to workflow I'm afraid...)
Second is High Quality on Demand meaning the HQ preview builds when you
select the file. Somewhat useful but time costly when having to click on
several files and every time have to wait for the building of the preview.
Third is Always HQ. This one I prefer to have set as default. It means that
you have to wait longer for all the previews to being build but this is only
once  and after this you can browse freely through all the files.
Having set to also build monitor sized previews in the prefs means you also
have to wait a little longer once when the folder builds cache but this is
in the same go after file ingestion and after this you can use the space bar
almost without delay to see a full screen preview. (And I'm on a 30"" Apple
Cinema display using mostly files from a EOS 1Ds3, big files, big screen
When it comes to size it can be any size, either a large psd. file or a tiny
.jpg. And i have my max set to 1000mb.
With this setting files above 1000 MB don't build previews but that should
not cause trouble when hitting spacebar, it only shows the small thumb on a
full screen with gray background and surely should not let Bridge crash.
Try also system maintenance with check and repair permissions.
And if the problem still persist create a new user for testing, log in under
this new account and try if the problem is still there, just to rule out
your current user account as the culprit.

  • Bridge Preview Images not showing changes made in ACR

Suddenly my raw (Nef) files in Bridge are not reflecting the changes I make to them. In other words after downloading from my CF card, I work on raw files in ACR either one at a time or sometimes applying changes across several pictures. The changed files show up in Bridge briefly and then revert back to the unchanged looking raw. All changes actually exist because if I open the file in ACR or PS they appear just fine. In Bridge however, no changes including cropping, etc. show up. When I open Bridge the files are fine for a moment and then they revert to the uncorrected raws. I can also go to View and hit "refresh" and they will all show the proper changes for an instant and then revert to the original state again.
I've tried resetting preferences, purging and rebuilding cache, deleting temp files, removing and re-doing xmp files, expanding cache size and all the various rendering options in Prefs. Nothing works.
I cannot use the Bridge Light box or Preview function to compare photos because the corrections I made aren't there to be seen. The only way to see them is to open each file one at a time in ACR. This problem has forced my workflow to a crawl as I have to edit one pic at a time without being able to compare two together. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi All:
I had similar problems plus constant crashes that made Bridge unusable.
It drove me to try alternatives to bridge and to try Lightroom. I like
Lightroom better than bridge but it has an operational limit that leads me
to be reluctant switch. But here is the rub, now Bridge is working
perfectly! What I think fixed Bridge is running a disk/registry cleaner
called Ccleaner multiple times. I ran it almost every day for a week. It
found lots of stuff in my registry that it didnt like but as time went by
it found less and less. It also let me turn on or off services that run at
startup. I shut off anything that I could see that I didnt need, like
Adobe downloader; I dont need automatic downloading, as I can do it
myself. The result is at some point Bridge started to work again. It has
stayed working for more than 2 weeks now without one crash. I dont know
what was fixed that did the trick but so far Im happy. Ccleaner is a
free program and can be found at http://www.ccleaner.com/. Its a live
program as there have been several updates since I started using it. Try
it; I think it worked for me.
    John Passaneau
    PS
After Bridge started to work again, I had to purge the cache and rebuild
it. I use cache distributed to folders as I keep my photos on a network
attached drive and access them from 2 computers and a local cache will not
    work for me.

  • Why I can't do a search in my external hard disk using Adobe Bridge CS6?

When I open Adobe Bridge CS6 and try to do a search within my external hard disk, it will give results from my internal hardisk only?! this is the 1st time I encounterd such strange issue. Because of this I do my search with windows and then browse each result with Bridge! which really annoying.

I solved the problem by going to the search field and clicking on the search icon where it will give a drop list of 3 options, then selecting Bridge Search: Current Folder and that solved my problem. thanks for everyone help

You can do a search of an external drive if the OS permissions are OK.  Bridge will not search across different drives however.

  • Bridge + Photoshop buggy

1.Bridge is slow, it oftens displays a cache error problem on start up even when I have emptied cache.
2.Camera RAW will not display the correct tool eg Adjustment Brush [k] shows the loading circle unless click return.
I often have many hundreds of files which I know could be the cause but it is driving me nuts and slowing down production.
3.I also CANNOT hide PS CC while it is batch processing! I have tried both short cuts and using the dock icon method...
Never had these issues until the last 6 moths or so...
    Any ideas?

I have not found an answer yet. Have you questioned Dr. Brown about it?
As for Bridge, you can try a Prefs Reset:  On the Mac, hold down the Opt. key first and start Bridge.
Check the boxes, click OK and it should help.

  • Bridge Not Working

I'm going to try and make this as clear as possible because I'm not as smart as many of you so please bear with me.
I'm working with Adobe Bridge CS6 5.0.2.4 on my Mac OS X 10.9.2. A couple days ago when I opened it, the following message popped up.
I didn't really know what the central cache was but I assumed it was causing a problem (per the pop up message) so I did what it said and I cleared the central cache. I have a lot of RAW files on my computer so I figured that could have been the problem. I did this for all of the folders that I had been working in over the past several days.
After I did this, the preview for my images was gone. Now I have this. I realize that it does say "Building criteria..." but it just sits there and nothing happens for hours.
I searched through other forums and I tried some different things.
I tried this (also I tried it without the 100% previews):
I tried this (also tried this without the 100% previews):
(I saw that I was absolutely NOT supposed to press the "Purge Cache" button through preferences because it messes up your computer something fierce)
I also tried building and exporting the cache:
But I let it sit all night and nothing happened. It stayed at this screen:
I even tried downloading the Adobe Cleaner Tool (Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6) but all that did was remove Photoshop and Bridge from my Mac.
So I reinstalled the CS6 Creative Suite and I'm still having the exact same problems. I've updated everything (Camera Raw is version 8.4.0.199), I've tried restarting my computer, turning it off and waiting a couple hours and turning it back on, and I'm at a loss. It also keeps crashing.
I'm a photographer and I have several projects I need to continue working on so if any of you could help a sister out, I'd appreciate it.

I even tried downloading the Adobe Cleaner Tool
It seems to me the central cache file is corrupted or some or al your folder cache files that have exported or both.
Since you can't use it I would try to do a manual deleting (unfortunately even the CC clean tool does not remove the central cache file automatically.
    First quit Bridge.
You have 2 libraries on your system, 1 for the system itself (visible when you click the start up disk) and 1 for the user account that unfortunately is hidden by default per OSX 10.7). You can google for hidden library in OSX for a more permanent solution but for now just go to Finder and choose menu Go to reveal the drop down menu. With menu in view press option key and then Library will appear in the list, select it and choose column mode for view.
in this user library follow the path: Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files called 'Adobe Bridge Plug-in Cache' and a folder called 'Cache'. Delete both folders outside the library folder (if needed spare them a little time but you can also place them in the trash for now).
In the same library is a folder called preferences. Inhere is a file called: 'com.adobe.bridge5.plist' for Bridge version 5 that comes with CS6. Also delete this file.
Then restart Bridge to recreate all delete files as new and empty ones with factory settings and try if it works now.
If the cache files in the folders are problematic test one folder, use menu view / show hidden files and find and delete two files called Bridge.Cache and Bridge.CacheT and try again. Could you report back?

  • Bridge CS6, CC refuses to work

So here's my delimma; i'm wanting to process my JPGs in Raw from Bridge, but I can't get bridge to work.
I had CS5, CS6 and uninstalled both, then installed CC hoping that it would fix the Bridge problem but it didn't. Every time I open it I get 'opration can not be completed' then it stalls at 'building critera' with the wheel spinning in the lower left corner. I checked console to see if there was a message coming up, and there is something going on with the audio drivers. At first it was one particular HAS pulgin (Jack Router) that was casuing it to screw up, so I deleted it.
    No avail.
Basically I get the error message every time I open Bridge, then I try and click something and it freezes up. I've held down 'option' on startup and reset EVERYTHING. I've run Disk utility and FSCKd the disk to make sure it was clean.
    Mac OSX 10.8.4
    Macbook Pro Late 2011 15in i7 16GB 1600MHz (I run photoshop without error)
Over 250gb left on my HD
I'll attach the screenshots of the console messages. But here's the checklist of what DOES NOT work:
    Reset Bridge
    Restart Computer
FSCK (repairing permissions the hardcore way)
    Uninstalling CS5 and 6
Running under the Root account (same error message)

Uninstalling CS5 and 6 will not have any effect, except it might foul up file associations.  If you are going to not reinstall CS5 and CS6 I would uninstall CC also, run Adobe Script Cleaner then reinstall CC.  If you want CS5 and CS6 best to install in order, CS5, CS6, CC.  Remember, if you stop subscription to CC you have nothing.
You may also want to try this.  It is for CS6 but change to CC and Bridge 6
~library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6 and inhere should be 2 files:
    Adobe Bridge Plug-in Cache
and the folder called Cache. Inhere should be 4 folders called '254', '1024', 'data' and 'full'
All those folders carry the content of the respective quality of the thumbs and preview as well as 100 % cache and Bridge database.
Any way, Since you have not used Bridge you have no relevant amount of cache and I would suggest you quit both PS and Bridge and manual delete both the items (plug in and folder called cache at the end of the Bridge CS6 path mentioned above.
(both files will refresh itself after a restart of Bridge).
To be on the save side also visit in same user library the folder Preferences and look for the file called "com.adobe.bridge5.plist" (yes it is Bridge 5 that comes with CS6, all Adobe apps have their own version number and they are presented in the same Suite version. CS6 has PS version 13 and Bridge version 5 )
also drag this file to the trash.
Then hold down option key (alt) while starting Bridge and this should give you the option to reset the preferences as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Choose reset prefs and try again.
