Bridge won't write metadata; Photoshop will

I have some TIFFs created from scans. Here's the problem I'm seeing.
When opening the image in PS CS5 I often get a message saying This file contains file info data which cannot be read and which has been ignored.
First, I try to change some metadata in Bridge and save the image. Sometimes this solves the problem. Often, though, I get a message saying There was an error writing metadata to "filename".
Next, I open the image in PS simply clicking OK on the error message above. I open File Info, change some metadata and save the image. So far this has always solved the problem thus far.
The source of hte problem will likely not be easy to discover since the error message provides no useful information and since it is happening frequently, but not universally. At first I thought it was related to specific fields, but further testing seems to indicate it is not. Then I thought since another running application gave me a low storage message, it might be related to that. That does not seem to be the case either.
However, even if I don't find the root cause, it would be helpful if Bridge would simply rewrite the metadata to fix the problem rather than having to go into PS.
Any thoughts?
Dale

From
what you are saying the TIFF's are corrupt somehow.  Open them in PS
and then save with another name and see it you can then write metadata.
For whatever reason Bridge may be more sensitive to the error than PS.
Can you change the scan to another format to eliminate the problem?
Granted the metadata is somehow corrupt. However opening them in PS and then saving them with the same name solves the problem, so it must rebuild the corrupt metadata fields.
I've scanned several hundred TIFFs and only had the problems on a few files. The only archival formats Nikon Scan 4 gives me are TIFF and nef and if I used nef ACR won't recognize the colorspace.

  • Bridge won't open within Photoshop CS6

I have no problem opening bridge on its own, or if I right-click on an image in my folder, but if Photoshop is open and I click on the "Launch Bridge' button at the bottom, I see "Waiting for bridge to open" forever. And then if I launch bridge on its own, close Photoshop, and restart Photoshop and now click on it, it will open quickly. I don't understand why this is so. Can anyone shed any light on this pls?
    Thank you

  • Nikon D60 - Bridge CS3 cannot write Metadata

{This is a follow on to thread: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6704d/1}<br /><br />It appears that Bridge CS3 is unable to write some of the IPTC metadata to pictures taken with my Nikon D60.  When trying to change some metadata in a file I get the message "There was an error writing metadata to <filename>"<br /><br />Strangely this does not happen with all metadata fields. For instance, I can change the IPTC Core "City" or "Location" and the change works just fine. However, if I try changing IPTC Core "Creator" or "Copyright Notice" I get that error.<br /><br />I have confirmed that the problem is with the D60 pictures, as it occurs in two different machines (Both CS3, one Vista, one XP).  Both machines are able to edit other camera's pictures OK.  All files are in JPEG format, I have not tried anything in RAW format.<br /><br />I did find in a completely different forum (for BreezeBrowser, which I've never used) a reference to a similar problem.  At least in that forum they mention that the Nikon D60 uses a "different" way of storing metadata which leads to the problem.  BreezeBrowser will release a new version to address this issue.  <br /><br />Any idea what the solution might be for Bridge and other Adobe products?<br /><br />Thanks!<br />Carlos

I don't have my camera with me at the moment, so I'll have to shoot in NEF later. However, just for kicks I downloaded the latest version of ACR and checked against my current version. It appears to be the same (same size, same timestamp). I even replaced it, per the instructions with the download. No love.
As mentioned in my original post, the issue is limited to a few fields, in particular "Creator" (XMP) or "By-line" (IPTC). I went and added new data to this field using ExifTool. I added it to both IPTC and XMP fields since I know Bridge synchronizes them. The change took, and Bridge noticed it. But now Bridge will not let me modify any XMP/IPTC metadata. It won't even let me change the rating of the file!
I'm really at a loss here. I've searched through other threads and haven't found anything to enlighten me.

    Yes, it's maddening.
I don't get an error message. I'll have to try to write the metadata to file to seet what happens. But, you would think that the way LR works, you should not have to write the data when you make a web site, or when you export. Are we the only one's complaining? A work-around would be to export and then write the metadata with Bridge -- defeats the whole purpose of LR.
Despite a year of beta testing, LR sees like it's full of bugs, and a heap of features that seem illogical, at least for me. That's the problem of software by committee, or forcing us to use someone elses work flow model. I think a lot of hot shot photographers may not understand the digital work flow enough to consult on software development. I got a discount through NAPP, but I feel like I paid too much.
    I'm going to try Aperture.

  • Bridge won't batch to Photoshop

I have been having some problems recently with Bridge connecting with Photoshop to batch files. I keep getting the error "FatalError: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop. - <no additional information available>" whenever I try to use the batch function. I am running Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) and Bridge CS3 (2.1.1.9) on OS X (10.4.11). I have noticed several people on the forum having some functionality between the two, but I cannot make the two work together. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Bridge won't save metadata for .mov files

    Hi.
I could be trying to do something that Bridge can't do (though I have read that it should). I am trying to add metadata to .mov files. Bridge allows me to enter the text both under 'File info' and in the Metadada IPTC Core fields, however when I 'apply' or click OK they don't save.
Well, in the IPTC Core when I click 'apply' they are there until I select another file then go back and they aren't.
I am using Bridge CS5 on a PC with XP.
    Thanks

Thanks Curt Y. Under 'run as' there was two options both of which were noted as administrator - though I could only use one as we don't have the password for the other. I'm not using an external drive.
The strange thing is that there is no problem applying the metadata to images, just mov files.

With CS5 you must have registered, hopefully under your present Adobe ID.

  • Bridge won't open JPG files in Photoshop CS3

I changed my preferences to remove the check-box "prefer Adobe camera RAW for Jpeg and TIFF files" , restarted Bridge and tried to open a JPEG from bridge directly into photoshop. But double clicking on the image in bridge opened "paint".
So I change the Bridge preferences back to Prefer ACR for JPEG again, restart Bridge, and then bridge tells me that it cannot find Photoshop CS2. CS2 is not even loaded on this machine anymore.
So then I go to the file type associations preferences and "browse" to the CS3 version of photoshop, restart bridge, and double click on a JPEG and it again says that CS2 cannot be found. I change the association again using the "browse" to CS3 and then it opens the image up in "Paint" again.
Why won't Bridge open JPEG's in ACR anymore?
Why won't bridge open JPEG's in Photoshop CS3 anymore?

Bill, thanks for the reply. But I do not think that the file associations is the answer here. If I am using bridge to open files in ACR or Photoshop, I do not believe that I need to change the windows file type association. I have other PC's where the file association is not photoshop and bridge works fine opening these files. In fact, when using windows explorer to navigate JPG files, I do NOT want photoshop being opened to preview these images. On my other PC's, I can both preview JPG's using windows picture viewer, and open the JPG's via bridge in ACR. Furthermore, Photoshop CS2 is NOT the application listed for JPG's in the folder options in the control panel. So the problem that I have here has something to do with Bridge or perhaps something is corrupted int he files.
The reason why I suspect a corruption, is that not all files behave in the same manner in bridge. Some files with the same extension open as I would expect, while others do not. I did not realize this fact when I made my original post.

Not a driver issue, or it wouldn't even read.  You are missing the program required for disk writing that Toshiba suppiles with factory installs, but is lacking in commercial versions of Windows.  It is not available as a download, only as part of the factory image.  Since you changed to XP, You'll need to buy some disk writing software like Nero or Roxio.

  • Can no longer write metadata to Raw files

My team an d I are working in Photoshop CS5, we write metadata to jpegs and Raw files- saving to Raw database not as sidecar .xmp files.  We are no longer able to save the metadata to Raw files.  There is no error message, the data writes like normal and the user who writes the metadata can see it but when you open in another computer the metadata fields are empty, however the jpegs do have the new metadata.  Was there a setting change at some point? This has been going on for a couple months and I cannot find an answer anywhere.  Again, we batch write to RAW+Jpeg, the jpeg files save the metadata but the Raw files look like the data saved but is not visible on any computer other thant he one that added the new metadata. This is occurring on multiple computers, both Mac and PC.

    TimVasilovic wrote:
I understand the process you are describing,  In the past I have been able to embed metadata to a Raw file, move it to a server, pick that file up on another computer and see the metadata without need of the .xmp sidecar.  Is the ability to embed no longer supported  by Photoshop? Since this issue began we have taken to doing all our metadata editing in PhotoMechanic, which embeds without creating a sidecar.  If Photoshop is pushing people to create sidecar .xmp files only for writing metadata to Raw files I will probabaly move fully to PhotoMechanic because using sidecars has proven tricky in the past with how our files get moved around.
If using Adobe Camera Raw on camera raw file you either have an XMP sidecar file created or the data is stored in a database.  Which happens it is your option in Edit/camera raw.  If you use ACR and edit a jpeg it does not create a distinct XMP file but it is also not directly written to the image either.  One can still delete the edits in Bridge with Edit/develp settings.
If you use a DNG the metadata is written to the image.  Not sure what process Photo Mechanic uses.
It appears to be a permission problem as other than CS6 Bridge is now 64 bit and has a new cache method there are no changes in how it handles metadata.

  • Bridge won't open-mac

I just reinstalled CS3 and Photoshop works fine, but bridge won't open. The icon bounces and the dock indicates it is open and force quit is necessary to clear the dock below the icon but bridge won't come up. I updated when I reinstalled, btw.
Do I need to reinstall again?

Hold down the Option key as you launch Bridge, then click the boxes in the dialog box that appears.
    Routine maintenance is imperative.
I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) seldom helps.; Try it anyway, though.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.
