Bridging and/or extending 2 wireless routers connected to 2 different modems?

I am begining to think this is not possible but wanted to clear this here before I gave up.
In my network
I have my base AirPort Extreme connected to a modem at one end of the house.
I have an airpot express which is extending the network and connected to a speaker for playing music. ( not really pertinent)
At the other end of the house, I have another Airport Extreme connected by ethernet cable to a different modem.
What I am starting to realize, if this is correct, is that #3 is not actually using the ethernet connection to boost the signal. Its simply extending my base Airport Extreme. As shown below. Is this right?
I'm curious to know if I can keep #3 connected to that modem and/ or bridge to the other router to create a roaming network? Basically, I am trying to optimize my signal with the second connection to the modem. Diagram below illustrates this.
I have been searching for a while with no success and wondering if someone has tried this or if its simply not possible. I am aware of bridging that utilzes the same modem. However I want to use a different one as illustrated above.
Thanks for any and all help.

As it stands now #3 is extending the network.
But it is not, because it can't....even if it did not have a modem connected.
You can only extend an Apple network one time. The AirPort Express is already doing that. It is not possible to have #3 extend the signal again wirelessly.....even if you wanted to do that.
If you located #3 about the same distance from the main AirPort Extreme.....and closer to the AirPort Extreme than to the AirPort Express....then it could be setup to extend the network wirelessly.
Apple's extend setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your "main" AirPort Extreme is the "hub". Other extending devices are located at the ends of separate "spokes".
Each extender must connect directly to the hub......not to another extender at the end of another spoke.
So, the ideal setup would have the "main" router (hub) located near the center of your home.....and then other extending devices could be located in different directions (spokes) around the perimenter or outer areas of the home.

Can I connect a extreme using the rj45 and still extend my wireless to another time capsule working as the router?

Yes, that should be possible. I am assuming that you have the first AirPort connected to the Internet modem or another router by Ethernet and you want to extend it with another AirPort.

  • Extending a wireless internet connection to another part of a building

We have a wrt54g wireless router connected to a quest dsl modem. we now want a wireless internet connection in another part of the building which is out of range of the wrt54g. the two areas are about 200 ft apart and i can run a cat5 cable to new area. Can i install a second wrt54g in the new area and how exactly do i configure it for security and connectivity.
    Thanks
    Gary

Yes, you can do what you described.   You can run cat5 cable if you want, but it will need to be very high quality (i.e. professional grade) cat5 cable installation to make a 200 foot connection.   If you are doing this yourself, I would suggest you start with good quality cat5e cable for such a long run.   And make sure the cat5e connection works before you string the cable.
You will also need to convert the second router to a WAP (wireless access point), by making a few simple setting changes.

  • The new iMacs, Sandy Bridge and WiDi 2.0 (Wireless HD Display)

I understand that the new Sandy Bridge processors have built-in wireless display (WiDi - HD streaming to an external monitor) and since the new iMacs have these processors; do they have the ability to wirelessly stream HD content via WiDi 2.0?
If not, is this a hardware issue or an OS X issue that may be addressed by a future OS release, such as Lion?

So, yes, I welcome all kinds of waves, even micro ones... Seriously, this is completely affecting my next decision purchase. I want full browser experience on my HDTV without placing an iMac in my living room. If this feature cannot / will not be available on this iMac I will need to purchase a Mac Mini.
Maybe I should re-title my post, but I can't be the only user that wants this feature and if Fusion / Parallels will allow it or a future OS X update will, I would like to know. Neither sales or AppleCare knows the answer?
    Strange.

  • Bridge does not work for wireless clients - connecting to existing network.

Hi - I really hope somebody can help out here, after hours of trial & error, I have finally given up
I need to connect my Airport Extreme Base Station to my existing network. I have a linksys router (192.168.15.1) connected to my modem and this linksys router acts as DHCP server too.
I suppose I have to use "bridge mode" for that to work. But should the linksys be connected to the AEBS using the AEBS's WAN or LAN port?
If I use "bridge mode", then wired computers to the AEBS works fine - getting an IP from the linksys etc. BUT, the wireless clients will have a self-assigned IP and not get through to the internet. It's like the AEBS will not allow wireless clients to "get through" unless AEBS itself is handing out IP addresses.
Page 36 of this manual ( http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf ) shows the setup I want. But in the picture, it says "Ethernet WAN port" but the text says: "The Apple wireless device (in this example, a Time Capsule) uses your Ethernet network to communicate with the Internet through the Ethernet LAN port ( <--> )." I don't know which one to use, WAN or LAN - they show WAN but say LAN?
When I set it up as "share an IP address", the AEBS status tells me "double nat" and to change from "shared IP" to "bridge mode". I do that, and everything seems fine - for the wired clients. Now the wireless clients cannot connect, Airport on the MacBook Pro just say "Connection failed" and the MacBook says "Invalid password" (translated from danish), even though I set the Airport Utlity to save the password in keyring, so it should be correct... If I disable wireless encryption, the wireless clients will connect but get a self-assigned IP, and therefor not work (cannot get online)...
It seems the only way I can get wireless to work, is if I set AEBS up as DHCP, but then it won't be on the "same network" as the linksys (192.168.15.1), but rather on 10.0.x.x as I select. If I select 192.168.x.x within AEBS, I'm also getting some error messages, conflict/subnet thing.
Anyway - I really hope somebody knows how to get wireless clients to get an IP address from existing ethernet when connected to the AEBS.
    Thanks!!

I've given up and had to go back to running "Double NAT" which also reports as a "problem" within the AEBS, but I just "ignore" it so the light will always be green.
It still ***** though, as "Double NAT" is also a reason for "Back to my Mac" not working properly, but how the ** am I supposed to avoid Double NAT when the wireless will not work in bridged mode?!

  • MacBook Pro and iMac keep losing wireless internet connection.

Greetings all, two weeks ago I purchashed a MacBook Pro and iMac and they've worked fine, except for the internet. The wireless randomly goes out, but the airport bars remain. At first I thought it was just pages having trouble loading because of the OS (stupid I know) It's been happening more and more frequently and the only way to solve it is to turn the Airport off and then on which allows the internet to reconnect. My wireless router is connected to an HP an the router is a Dlink 1310 wireless G router. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi all,
It seems I am not alone. There is a very strange problem either with my brand new unibody MacBookPro 17" or the Airport Extreme I am using to connect to the Internet via a cable connected router. The router I am using is Billion 7300 and works fine, and I can even connect to the wireless access via the router and all works fine. I am using Airport Extreme to extend the access area in my house and also use a USB drive for storage attached to the AirportExtreme. The funny thing is that the first couple of weeks I had no problems with the MacBookPro going on the Internet via the Airport. At that time I had the wireless part of the Billion modem disabled so as to avoid possible interference. Suddenly, one day about a week or so ago, the MBP would connect first time to the wireless Airport and to the Internet for only about a few seconds and then no update on any of the web pages. I was suspecting first my ADSL, but that was all along OK. The signal strength to the Airport is strong, but just the connection to the Internet is no longer available. Strange thing is I have in the same room a 24" iMac and this is still connected to the Internet via the Airport with no problems. Same settings on both! I tried everything I could think off on the Airport, tweaked, changed, reset and created new connection - but without any luck. It is as if the Airport decided to just block the MBP for whatever reason. I also have the Little Snitch, which I disabled too.
I was hoping that the latest Leopard 10.5.7 would have a fix for such a behaviour, but no change.
I cannot make any conclusion as everything contradicts: if the MBP wireless has a problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to the Billion wireless; if the Airport is at fault I should not be able to connect to it with the iMac. I go to work where other two brands of wireless hot-spots I use (D-Link and Billion 7402) and I have no problems swicthing between the two. It seems only Apple's Airport is a problem for my new MBP.
It must be something in the software of the Airport or MBP ?!?!?
APPLE, PLEASE HELP, THIS IS ANNOYING.
I already spent three days trying to solve a problem that should be 'No Brainer" according to the Apple's design books. But I do have a problem that I did not know about before.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

  • Installing and set-up a dial up connection with an USB modem

    Hello.
I moved recently to London, and due to some kind of critical lack of financial sustainability, I cannot afford to pay monthly a decent Internet connection. However I have a phone line on my house so I was thinking on using a USB 56k modem to connect via dial-up to Internet (my laptop don't have any integrated modem or PCMCIA port). But I honestly don' t know if that will work (all references googling send me to setting up a 3g modem, which is not the case)
What should I do? It will work fine? I remember vagely using ppp-on years ago, and editing some files... But I recknon I wont use anymore tty0 or tty1 if it is a USB device (I am using a custom kernel, so after going for work I' ll do a make menuconfig to check driver aviability). And just for curiosity... It will have dial-up tone? If I have to go nostalgic I' d rather experience the full thing.
    Thanks in advance

    http://www.freeukisp.co.uk/about-dial-u … access.htm
It is the first result googling "free dial up uk", but there is quite a bunch out of there. I only need to look and choose. In Spain at least, I didn't had to pay (just the call rate, wich was free for local calls, so yep, free)
I use the temrinal, and when in X, fvwm95, so I assume wvdial is for me.
    Thanks for the quick answers

  • Want to Start Backing-Up and Would Like a Wireless Connection

I will try to explain my question as simple as I can, but my tech knowledge is not the best, so please bare with me. As I said in the heading I would like to start backing up my MBP (something I never have done) and I would like to use a 3.5-4 year-old Airport Extreme I have had for 4 years but never really used it much. I have a new MBP so I would like to understand what some of the basic terms mean first.
In the dock I have an icon called Time Machine. I saw a device that looked like my Airport Extreme at the Apple Store, but I think the guy said it was called an Apple Capsule. He also said the Apple Capsule can do great back-ups and also "get you up and running on a wireless internet connection." Although I did not check out the costs of all the stuff I would need, I wanted to get an experts guidance on what is what and what I would need to use the program I already have called Time Machine. The Airport Extreme I have is square has several ethernet port ports in the back a WAN port and a light in the front that can turn various colors depending on the status of the Wireless connection.
I am not sure if the Airport Extreme I have is still OK to use, safe enough, all of that stuff since technology changes so much in a short amount of time. So I was also looking at the LaCie Rugged Hard Disk Triple also 500 GB capacity option and if my 3.5 or 4 year-old Airport Extreme will work just fine use that and the LaCie.
I am alos trying to understand the difference between the icon on my dock called Time Machine, the Time Capsule, and what I would need counting what my MBP came with (The Time Machine for sure).
I think I got all the basic questions out for starters, and please let me know if you need any additional info if you need any additional info.
I should add when I first connected up the Airport Extreme when I finally got the nerve to call Applecare for help hooking up the Airport Extreme approx 3.5-4 years ago. the lady who was in Canada was very good but the process seemed quite complicated and that could have been because that was the first real complicated set-up I had done using my new MBP at that time. It seemed a lot of the complications came with all the passwords, security questions I had to remember, long numbers, etc. But since I knew nothing about Macs at that time it probably had a lot do do with that.
I am open for constructive criticisms and help but if you have a need to knock someone down please go elsewhere. I tried my hardest to explain what I need help with and when I decided to come to my favorite place for help, I came hoping I would not get a bunch of put-downs like has happened in the past.
thanks in advance for your help.

I appreciate your help. I understand now that Time Machine is software. What I do not understand is it software to be used with Time Capsule? Another device?
Apple intends Time Machine to be used to write its backup files to (a) a directly-connected (as via USB or FireWire) external or secondary internal disk or (b) the disk in a Time Capsule. All other configurations are officially unsupported.
I have not purchased the LaCie device yet. it seemed cool.
As a Time Machine target drive I imagine that the LaCie drive is fine for a directly-connected drive (option "a" above), but is not recommended for use when connected to a WiFi base station.
at the time I wrote this post, I had no idea that the Time Capsule was an Airport Extreme too
Apple doesn't call it that, but except for the disk drive it's functionally equivalent.
I appreciate your feedback on how to avoid some of the smart *** and mean comments I frequently get. I do not agree with most of what you wrote because although I post a post or Question(s), but I do not ask any specific person to answer or help me.
True, but that's not my point. When you post a question on a forum such as this, you do so with the hope that someone will reply with useful advice. To do that someone has to read your post to determine what advice to give you. So anyone who has any thought of helping you has to first read your post, which involves a certain commitment of time.
Frequently I do not get any answers or replies. it is their decision to try and help me or not. If they do not like the way the question(s) is worded or expressed in writing, they do not have to even attempt to answer it. That is what I never understood. The negative criticism would come with their first reply, but I did not even ask any specific person to help me.
It's hard to comment without seeing your post and the reply, but perhaps those people were just trying to help you (clumsily, perhaps) learn how to write better-behaved posts.
I do agree with putting too much info. in a post. I do try to keep it clear and concise, but that is very hard for me. So I appreciate your comment about that, because I do think I do have a tendency to write too much at times. I think it is great that there are people who like or want to do this, for whatever reason.

  • Airport Express-Apartment-Multiple Wireless Routers

I live in an apartment and there are many wireless routers within range of my MBP and APE. I often have problems with skipping songs while streaming iTunes and so I was wondering if there was a better way to set up my network.
Frankly I'm not well versed in this sort of thing. When I bought it I just pluged it in and went with what worked.
    Any advice would help.

There are so many external factors that affect this answer.
    Actual distance required ,
Type of structure, ( Interference ). This affects all Routers.
    Overall ability of the product.
Airport Extreme and Airport Express have several other features that normal Routers do not offer. The ability of the Extreme as a Print Server
The ability of the Express as Streaming Audio there are several options that are in fact only Apple propritory.
The ability to use Express with Extreme to extend your Network.
That being said I live in a 3 story Victorian and I have used several different brands and all worked very well with 100% coverage, the best in my situation was the Airport Extreme Base for the Print Server capability, that allowed for wireless printing.
Bear in mind that all of the major manufactures offer very good products that work and work very well. You will find that buying the top of the line from any company, will be extremely hard to compare side by side, because all are good. Some just offer different features you may or maynot need.

  • Belkin wireless router connected but browser could not find the host server

my new roommate has a belkin n wireless router connected to a cable modem which functions perfectly on her pc laptop. i am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to the router using her WEP password. this all works fine and my System Preferences/Network/Status shows that AirPort is connected with full strength, but i cannot load any web pages (i have not yet been able to load any pages at all using this router). the page load error reads "Firefox can't find the server at www.cnn.com" and "The browser could not find the host server for the provided address".
I spoke with Belkin support and they say the router is functioning properly, that is a problem with my mac.
When I go to Network Diagnostics, the status shows all green and says "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Network Diagnostics?
Could this be a firewall issue? A couple people have suggested that, but I'm not sure how to fix that.
I have tried rebooting the router and cable modem, rebooting the mac, etc.
any ideas on what settings i may need to investigate??
    thank you!

how do I know if the router has useful DNS servers? i am looking at the settings of the router on the pc that is online.
Somewhere in the settings of the router should be the DNS servers that it is using. Since the router is offering via DHCP to do DNS translation for your Mac, it must have useful DNS servers listed.
There are "public" DNS servers. I have no experience with it, but this Web page describes one from Google:
    http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Supposedly Google has a DNS server at IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 that you might try. Since the DNS server setting on your Mac is grayed out, as a test you might try noting the setting in the "TCP/IP" tab of your AirPort connection item of the Network panel of System Preferences. Then switch from "Using DHCP" to "Manually", fill in the values you just noted, switch to the DNS tab and fill in Google's DNS addresses, and see if things work better.
do you have any other suggestions of where to seek help???
    Perhaps a Belkin discussion group?

  • More than one wireless network connection

Is it possible to keep more than one wireless connection installed for my Deskjet 3000 (J310 series) in Devices & Printers? I am using Windows 7 Pro. For example when I travel to my dad's house I take my printer with me and he has a wireless cable connection.  I have to go through the setup to get the printer on his network, then when I come home I have to go through the process again to get back on my network. I would like to be able for it to keep BOTH so all I have to do is select one or the other and not go through setup again!
    Hope there is a solution!
    Patti

    Hello pranderson
Unfortunately the printer can only store one network settings at a time. I'm not sure of any printer than remembers multiple network settings either.
Unless its a mobile printer, printers are not typically moved between different networks.
Is there a particular reason for moving the printer? I'm just curious and hope I have been informational.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.

  • N82 black - slow wireless internet connection

    Hi
New to the group and just got N82 through Orange.
Really like the phone but disappointed with the wireless internet connecion - one of the features I was attracted to.
I have a Netgear wireless router connected to a cable modem, with a 2Mb cable internet connection. My laptop runs fine on this connecion.
My phone identifies and connects to the WLAN fine through the wizard (phones reports a 100% signal strength from the wireless router) however I get a few problems when trying to connect to the internet:
    1) Very slow download of pages apart from the homepage (which I have changed to bbc.co.uk). Most of the time pages hang half way through.
    2) Frequent "Internet timeouts".
As the router signal strength is very strong (I am trying this a few feet away from the router) and my laptop connects and downloads just fine I can only think that there is something with the phone that isn't quite right or a setting which needs adjusting.
My router has WPA2 security set up and I think my phone has the latest firmware (v. 20.0.062).
Can anyone help improve my internet experience with this phone?

  • Lost connection to my cable modem

Ok people I am hoping that you can help me out here. Yesterday my Time Capsule stop connecting to the internet through the cable modem. Called Comcast assuming it was there service.  After an extensive check process we determined that service and the cable modem were working correctly.  So then i proceeded to call Apple Support. Again through the check process of all the peices that are connected to finally determine that the TC was the culprit.  I took the TC back to the Apple Store and they graciously exchanged it out.  I took it back home hooked it up and it we are back to where I started, the new TC is responding exactly like the old unit. So my cable modem is a Motorala SB6141 and I have sevice through Comcast.  The cable modem and TC have been working together for 6 months before this happened, with no new hardware added in the last three months. The cable modem when connected to the computer (Mac or Windows) directly can connect to the internet.  I even tried connecting the cable modem to a AirPort Express and it had the same effect as the TC.  So does anybody have any suggestions?

The SB6141 is problematic with the Airport routers.
There is some issue of compatibility.. it is hard to figure out.
If you replace the cable modem with a different one it will be more likely to work. I am not in the US so just look at posts about the more compatible models. Or simply use another brand router, and set the TC in bridge and use it as wireless and backup target.
I do think you can get some improvement in some cases using a crossover cable. I have made that recommendation and it has worked for people.
Or a small 10/100 switch between the two .. cable modem and TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23236139?ac_cid=tw123456#23236139
You need to power cycle the modem whenever you change router.. I am guessing you are doing that.. but just to be sure.. at least 15-30min is required with some ISP.. 5min for others.. some are much longer..
The ISP must drop your previously connected equipment to pick up the new one.

  • I have 1 Internet Connection and I need to hook 2 wireless routers help.

I have one internet connection.  I need to use 2 wireless routers.  What model of linksys router should I purchase and how should I hook them so we can use both at the same time.

Remember that both wireless routers will not communicate wirelessly you will have to connect both the router's together with Ethernet Cables...
What will be the approximate distance between both the routers ?
Do you wish to establish communication between the computers connected to Router 1 and computers connected to Router 2 ?
Do you wish to have a separate network for both the router's ? Look at this link
You can go with Wireless - N draft Router's(WRT310N, WRT320N, WRT350N, WRT400N, WRT600N etc) as they will give you a good range to connect to a distant wireless clients...

How do I view the list of wireless routers my ipad has successfully authenticated with, and if possible when the last connection to each was made?

The information is of course stored on the device, but currently thee is no way to get to it. It is unknown whether iOS stores the date info for each connection.
As to whether a program can be written, its likely it can, but unlikely it can be done by anyone other than Apple, as by design, 3rd party Apps are not allowed to core system functions like that so its unlikely any App could list your connection history.
As has been said to remove a single connection from the iPad you need to be in range of it, tap the circle on the right side of the router name, and then tap on Forget this network.
