Bridging betweteen different vtp domain

Can I bridge same vlan in different switch (2950 -- 3750 -- 2950) since each switch is consist of different vtp domain?
Thanks for any help!

Hi,
Yes, You can bridge on the same vlan between diff switches. If you have diff VTP domain, your VTP advertisements will not travel to the switch with diff VTP domain and you will lose the Vlan consistency on your LAN. Moreover if you want same number of VLANS then you have to define them manually. If you have a trunk between the switches in diff VTP domain, set the trunk to on as the trunk doesnot negotiate between the switches in diff VTP domain and trunk doesnot get established.

  • VTP domain disconnect

    Hi All.
I have Cisco LMS 3.2.1 at a Customer site, he was checking discrepancies and received an "VTP disconnect message".
The network has a VTP server which is 6509 switch connected via Trunk to all switches.
Can anyone throw me a direction in which we can look here?

VTP doesn't know propagate advertisements outside the vtp domain. It, rather maintains information consistency between the switches in the same vtp domain through the trunk links.
Configuring different vtp domain is the same as isolating each switch in a domain.
    PS:

    VLANs 1025 to 4094.)
When you make a change to the VLAN configuration on a VTP server, the change is propagated to all
switches in the VTP domain. VTP advertisements are transmitted out all trunk connections, including
Inter-Switch Link (ISL), IEEE 802.1Q, IEEE 802.10, and ATM LAN Emulation (LANE).
VTP servers advertise their VLAN configuration to other switches in the same VTP domain and

Each switch in the VTP domain sends periodic advertisements out each trunk port to a reserved multicast
address. VTP advertisements are received by neighboring switches (in the same domain), which update their VTP and VLAN

The following global configuration information is distributed in VTP advertisements:
    • VLAN IDs (ISL and 802.1Q)
    • Emulated LAN names (for ATM LANE)
    • 802.10 SAID values (FDDI)
    • VTP domain name

  • Vtp domain

    Hi,
would appreciate some advise and clarification on the following:
    1) when 2 switches are configured with different vtp domain, but both configured with e.g. vlan 500, they would be able to communicate? should be yes?
    2) when one of the switch is updated to the same vtp domain, would it cause downtime to the existing vlan 500 users? should be no?
    Thanks,
    Christina

when you update switch to the same vtp domain ...it will have configuration revision number 0... so it will syncronise its database from other serverswitch in the topology with the higher revision number ... so updating switch to the vtp domain will not cause any problem...

  • VTP domain change

    Hi,
Our network runs in one VTP domain. All switches are Cat6500 (ISO) sup2 or sup720. All is working in Layer 2.
We are using vlans above 1000 which cannot be propagated by VTP and needs to be configured by hand on every switch. We changed the VTP domain so every 6500 switch was its own VTP domain and then trouble started ... something strange occured. The MAC addresses were not propagated to other switches in vlan (layer 2 only vlan). Putting static entries did not solve the problem. The MAC addresses in the same VLAN were only propagated from access1(VTP access1) to core1(VTP core1),but not to the access2 (VTP access2). Same thing the other way.
On switches that we didnt change vtp, everything worked fine. After couple of hours trying to solve the problem, I changed back to same VTP domain for all switches and MACs starts propagate.
What was cousing this problem ?
    Thanks and regards:

  • VTP domain name change

we have a number of campus LANs that for historical reasons, all have the same VTP domain name (even though they are seperate domains).
we'd like to change the domain names so that they are unique throughout the network. is the correct method of acheiving this:-
1 change VTP server to Transparent Mode
2 change VTP domain on 'server' to new domain
3 change all Client switches on campus to Transparent mode and change domain name to new one. change mode back to Client and then restart.
    any advice appreciated
    thanks
    andy

    Hi Andy,
I believe you have 2 VTP servers in your network with different VTP domain names and both VTP servers are playing role seperately for their VTP domains? Correct me if I am wrong?
If I am right you can go ahead with your plan and change your one VTP server which you waan sync with your other VTP server to transparent mode and then chage the VTP domain name then change it back to server mode so that you can also have 2 VTP servers in same VTP domain for any emmergency.
Talking about clients you can follow the same procedure as changing from client to transparent, then change the domain name and then back to client and you need not reload your switches.
Also remember while doing all these when you move your one VTP server and clients to different VTP domain name the VLAN information will get override by VLAN information persisting on your other VTP server and if this is what you want just go ahead.
Devang I did not undersood your BPDU stuff in this context can you please throw more light on the same.

  • VTP Domain Name and Transparent Mode

Can two switches connect via a trunk, one as a server and one as transparent and be in two different VTP domains respectively?

    Hi Guys,
    For the error messgae below:
Error Message DTP-5-DOMAINMISMATCH: Unable to perform trunk negotiation on port
[chars] because of VTP domain mismatch.
This you will got only when you have an automatic trunk negotiation using the DTP (dynamic trunking protocol) between the switches. The switches with different VTP domain name will not negotiate a trunk and a trunk will not form. But if you configure a trunk manually (not using DTP) then the trunk will work.

  • Vlan 1 on dot1q trunks, cross-vtp-domain

    Hello all,
trying to transport vlan 1 via .1Q between a c6500 (IOS) and a c35xx. The idea is to access the c35xx for management purposes.
Vlan 1 does not seem to work; neither the c35xx nor any devices attached to it can be seen in the vlan 1 cloud.
The 2 catalysts are members of different vtp domains. Both domains do include their vlan 1 definitions.
    Any ideas?

When using dot1q trunking you must specify what the native vlan is on BOTH sides of the trunk if it is different from 1. If you want the Interface VLAN1 on your 3750 be accessible then it must be in the same network as VLAN1 on your 6509. If you have a different vlan on your 3750 for users but want to keep VLAN1 for management this is how you need to set it up: Using VLAN 25 for users and VLAN 1 for management Example below using GiX/Y for uplink interface to 3750:
    interface Vlan25
    ip address 172.30.25.2 255.255.255.0
    ip helper-address 172.30.X.Y
    no ip redirects
    standby 1 priority 110 preempt
    standby 1 ip 172.30.25.1
    no shutdown
    Interface GiX/Y
    switchport
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,25
    switchport mode trunk
    no shutdown
    On 3750:
    interface VLAN1
    decription "Management Interface"
    ip address 172.30.25.5 255.255.255.0
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/1
    description "Trunk to 6509"
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,25
    switchport mode dynamic desirable
By NOT including: "switchport trunk native vlan 25"
on both sides of the trunk you are making VLAN 1 the native VLAN but still allowing VLAN 25 traffic

  • Talk between 2 VTP domain

    Hi,
How to make 2 different VTP domain talk to each other .Both domain are in same building .
    Thanks
    CD

    Hi Neo,
VTP domain is not at all concerned with communication between same vlans on multiple switches.
VTP as you know is just to get rid of manual vlan creation on multiple switches in big network.
But if you aready have vlan created like vlan 13 on switch with VTP Domain A and on switch with VTP domain B they can talk to each other if you have trunk between the 2 switches or even if you have an access port between 2 switches but the access port is configured for vlan 13.
Now because User A and User B are in same vlan they are in same broadcast domain so they do not need any layer 3 device and mac address of user B will be learned on switch who is in VTP domain A via trunk port and now when User A waan a talk to User B on other switch the frame will have the destination mac address of user B and when the farme from user A will enter switch which is in vtp domain A it will know that it has to move out of trunk port where the mac address is leraned and in this way it will reach switch who is in vtp domain B and vice versa will happen.
Hope I am clear with my explaination.

  • 2 VTP Domain on a VSS of 2 switch ???

    Hello everyone,
Recently my company merged with another and now we've to think again about all our network.
For that we've bought two 4500-x with 16 10gbe ports. With those two switch I've made a VSS.
Our new network is actually made with two completely separated network (by chance, they don't use the same IPv4 private class, but they have each a VTP domain and their VLANs) and we're going to let them separated but for the IT operations we're going to connect them via VRF and contrel them with some ACLs.
Our VSS of 4500-x will be used to route the vlan of each network between them. How can I transmit the good vlan (via VTP), to the good network ?
Is there any way to configure 2 VTP server on my Switch ??
    Thanks for your help.

Here's a draft of our topology, the new one isn't done yet.
I want to precise that actually those 2 networks are separated, and the purpose of the VSS of 4500-x is to connect those two networks only for the IT management.
Actually on each network a Cisco 3750 is the router of is network and we do Inter-VLANs routing. Those two 3750 will be remplaced by the 4500.
Each network has is own VTP Domain, with his own VLAN.
What I want to know is if there's a way to define two VTP Domain on our 4500, one for each network.
Like on my topology, in the networks the same VLAN (number) is used for different function and that's why I want 2 differents VTP Domain.
The 4500 will do the Inter-VLANs routing of each network and the two network will be routed (only for the IT management) via VRF.
Maybe I'm not clear but It's the first time I go further in networking configuration...
    Thanks for your help !

  • 4503 VTP Domain Name

I have a lab that consists of 2 - 4503 with SUPII running cat4000-i9s-mz.122-25.EWA14.bin as the core devices.  I have been practicing for the BCMSN test and was working with the different VTP confiuration options.  Here are the two issues that I am having.  One of which from reading other posts, I may have answered, but want to verify.
1- 4503 (Core_1) was configured as Server, but no VTP summary advertisements where being propegated to the other clients.  I verified the configuration multiple times to ensure accuracy.  All VTP Domain names where empty (factory default).  Not until I changed the VTP Domain name to Test, did I get propegation of vtp advertisements.  I have in the past been able to set up vtp on 3550, 3560 switches with no VTP Domain name and VTP worked as expected.  From reading, it appears the non propegation of vtp summary advertisements is the norm for 4503.  Can someone verity this.
2- How do you remove the VTP Domain name from the 4503?  I was able to remove the name from the other devices, 3550, 3560 by doing the following:
         del flash:vlan.dat
          wr er
          reload
On the 4503 I did the following:
          Switch#del /r /f cat4000_flash:vlan.dat
          reload
After reload, everything was back.  I also assumed when the 4503 was booting, it may have recieved the VTP information from the other 4503.  So I isolated both by disconnecting the uplinks to all other devices.  Still no go.  I have copied the start-up config to a tftp server, modified the config by removing all vtp information then copied back to running-config and this worked.  But it seems like there should be a better (easier) way of getting the vtp domain name removed on a 4503

    Hi,
Deleting the vlan.dat from cisco switches will delete the complete vlan and vtp information from database and if you are not able to delete the domain name in these type of situation try configuring the some bogus name with mode as transperent mode so that other should not get impacted.

    Hi BPEL community,

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. The app I want to cmd-tab to is on screen at the other desktop. I've tried again using 7 different applications and this problem persists in all of them, so I still need to use a multi-touch gesture (or ctrl-right arrow).
Just to be clear, when I press cmd+tab to change into iTerm, for instance, I can see iTerm in the menu bar next to the apple, but Lion won't change into a different desktop or show me the iTerm windows.
Edit: thank you captfred ! It was in front of me.

When I try to synchronise my calendar it all goes wrong when I have recurring appointments which I enter on Outlook. These are in the format ' first Tuesday of each month' as I play Bridge with different partners on different days each month so it is NOT every 4 weeks necessarily, it depends on the month.  These get lost on synchronisation or sometimes end up on a totally different day/date.  What can I do as it is very annoying.
Also it altered some theatre dates where I had entered both date and name of play - the name of the play vanished when I synchronised not just on i-pad but it deleted the info from Outlook as well.

Others have the same complaint.  iCal on the iPad can do recurring appointments, but not in the format you want (First Tuesday of every Month).  It will do the same DATE each month (e.g, the 25th of each month), but for now it does not do a particular DAY of each month.

  • Include a system in two different Transport Domain Controller

    Hi folks,
I s it possible to configure a system in two different transport Domain Controller?
The two domain controllers will be in the same /usr/sap/trans file system.
    thanks,

    Hello Má
Firstly to include system in the transport domain you need to have systems sharing common transport directory. Which you confirmed is the case.
Now when you try to change the Transport Domain of the system to make it part of another system it will overwrite current configuration.
Hence you wont be able to make one system part of two Domains.
There is no workaround available best of my infomation.

  • Cat4000-IOS not seen as member of its own vtp domain in CM

Recently we upgraded to CiscoWorks CD 5 V1. Cat4000-IOS devices are now supported in RME and CM. But in CM Topology Services the Cat4000-IOS devices are not seen as members of their own VTP domain. Instead, each access switch behind the Cat4000-IOS forms a single switch cloud (vtp disconnected domain) and no vtp server is found for that domain.
The two Cat4000-IOS serve as VTP servers and HSRP-Gateways for five access switches (Cat4000 with CatOS) connected via dot1q-trunks to each Cat4000-IOS.

I am having the same problem. I followed the link and the document says "A link in a VTP domain is not set to trunk. There are devices in this domain that do not communicate through any trunk." I have checked the devices and they are set up to trunk. In CiscoWorks - topology services, when I run a Logical Discrepancy Report It says the domain is disconnected and it is showing 15 sets. Set one shows my two 6509's, one 4006 & all of the 3524's connected to it. All of the other sets have only one 3524 in each of them. The trunk ports from two of my 4006's to my 6509's are as follows:
    interface Port-channel1
    description Uplink to C_BCAD_2213_6x_1
    switchport
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    no snmp trap link-status
On one of my other 4006's the trunk port is as follows:
    interface Port-channel4
    switchport
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    description Uplink to C_BCAD_2213_6x_1
    no snmp trap link-status
As you can see, they are both set up the same.
Also in Campus Manager, only the 4006 in set 1 & all of the 3524's show up graphically as clients. The two 6509's show up as servers.
All devices are running VTP version 2. The revision number on all devices is the same (10).
