Brief HOWTO: subnet with DHCP, DNS and forwarding

I finally took some time today to learn how to set up a DHCP server for ad-hoc direct wired connections and ended up with DNS and subnet forwarding too. I have posted a summary along with a launcher script here.
I would be interested in feedback from users with more network configuration experience. Are there any glaring security holes or stupid mistakes in my setup? If not, I plan to add links to the relevant articles in the wiki as I would have liked more concrete examples when I was setting this up. I felt like I was just cobbling together bits and pieces from different sources and it took some trial and error to get forwarding working right with limited permissions.
edit
I already realize that I can tie it down further by specifying source ranges for incoming traffic from the wired subnet.

Hi,
Could you type “route print“ on CMD, and post the result here?
It would be helpful if you may describe the phenomenon of the problem? such as changes before the problem occurs, any prompt error message, related operations except for these logged Event ID.
You may reference the link below for reference.

Thanks Eve! I appreciate your attempt to help. I inadvertently posted my reply for the Route table without quoting you first. Sorry about that.
As far as the problems go, time to logon to server > 5 minutes. Group Policy issues abound. DNS issues (as mentioned). Thought I had an easy one for you. Sorry about that.
I have one client computer running Windows 7x64 (call it My Workstation) that I back the server and other client PC's up to. The clients have no problem, but after a day or two, the server can no longer "see" the My Workstation and the backup fails.
But then when I reboot the My Workstation, the server "sees" it again!
Furthermore, I backup a 10TB RAID 6 array on
My Workstation to yet another client for redundancy (Call it WORKSTATION2-PC), but if I try to click on the computer icon in Windows Explorer for WORKSTATION2-PC, I get the error "Windows cannot access \\WORKSTATION2-PC. However if I type in
the ip address or WORKSTATION2-PC, I have no problems.

  • SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors

    Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
    the UPS.
    Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
    to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
    So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
    This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped..   Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

    Error 8/15/2012 12:48:28 PM NtFrs 13555 None "The File Replication Service is in an error state. Files will not replicate to or from one or all of the replica sets on this computer until the following recovery steps are performed:
    Recovery Steps:
    [1] The error state may clear itself if you stop and restart the FRS service. This can be done by performing the following in a command window:
    net stop ntfrs
    net start ntfrs
    If this fails to clear up the problem then proceed as follows.
    [2] For Active Directory Domain Services Domain Controllers that DO NOT host any DFS alternates or other replica sets with replication enabled:
    If there is at least one other Domain Controller in this domain then restore the ""system state"" of this DC from backup (using ntbackup or other backup-restore utility) and make it non-authoritative.
    If there are NO other Domain Controllers in this domain then restore the ""system state"" of this DC from backup (using ntbackup or other backup-restore utility) and choose the Advanced option which marks the sysvols as primary.
    If there are other Domain Controllers in this domain but ALL of them have this event log message then restore one of them as primary (data files from primary will replicate everywhere) and the others as non-authoritative.
    [3] For Active Directory Domain Services Domain Controllers that host DFS alternates or other replica sets with replication enabled:
    (3-a) If the Dfs alternates on this DC do not have any other replication partners then copy the data under that Dfs share to a safe location.
    (3-b) If this server is the only Active Directory Domain Services Domain Controller for this domain then, before going to (3-c), make sure this server does not have any inbound or outbound connections to other servers that were formerly Domain Controllers for this domain but are now off the net (and will never be coming back online) or have been fresh installed without being demoted. To delete connections use the Sites and Services snapin and look for
    Sites->NAME_OF_SITE->Servers->NAME_OF_SERVER->NTDS Settings->CONNECTIONS.
    (3-c) Restore the ""system state"" of this DC from backup (using ntbackup or other backup-restore utility) and make it non-authoritative.
    (3-d) Copy the data from step (3-a) above to the original location after the sysvol share is published.

  • [SelfSolved] Sharing connection with dhcp server and netctl

    Yesterday I switched to netctl and old, lovely network problems come back
    I have two interfaces: enp2s0 (profile Internet) and enp5s2 (profile Shared). enp2s0 connects to Internet, enp5s2 is LAN with DHCP. Very similar problem I described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153353 but now that config not works anymore.
    First, netctl can't start profile Shared. It's simple static config just to get up interface and set IP.
    Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
    Interface=enp5s2
    Connection=ethernet
    IP=static
    Address=('10.0.0.1/24')
    #Routes=('10.0.0.1/24 via 255.255.255.255')
    Gateway='10.0.0.1'
    DNS=('8.8.8.8')
    SkipNoCarrier=yes
    Of course dhcpd also not work, because interface is not configured.
    Second, if I start Shared profile and dhcpd manually, I cant connect to Internet. I set iptables like here:
    iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface enp2s0 -j ACCEPT
    iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface enp2s0 -j MASQUERADE
    and set
    sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
    Now, if I stop Shared profile, I can connect
    Edit:
    I switched back to netcfg and... it's working! Simple question, why this crap is in core repository?! Just because uses systemd?
    Edit2:
    Ok, it's not a crap I just love to learn about Linux networking in such lovely Sunday like today
    Shared profile should look like this:
    Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
    Interface=enp5s2
    Connection=ethernet
    IP=static
    Address=('10.0.0.1/24')
    SkipNoCarrier=yes

    Ok, I update dhcpd.conf:
    authotitative;
    option routers 10.0.0.1;
    option domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222;
    subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
    range 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.255;
    but nothing happened
    Problem was in iptables config, I should use:
    iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
    iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface eth0 -j MASQUERADE
    iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface eth1 -j MASQUERADE
    and now it works!

    I had way too many tool or task bars that would open in fire fox. I used the left hand button to close them and lost the one with back and forward button plus url window

  • Private and Public Networks with DHCP, DNS, AD-DS

    Hello, I am a student working on creating a server lab at school and am curious if it is possible to set up a unique testing environment. I will describe what I am trying to achieve below.
    I have roughly 15 servers inside of my school lab and want to learn some solid skills as I go out into the workforce. The server lab will utilize one server specifically as a AD-DS, DHCP, and DNS Server and another as a TFPT / Terminal Services Server. This
    so that I can set up the rest of the servers as a PXE boot environment (This may not be practical in the real world, but want to get some experience with it.) In order to do this I am using a private network that I have created with the networking equipment
    I have (Cisco 1800 Series Router, Cisco 2950 Series Switches) inside of the lab, but need to make sure that the servers in the lab can NOT talk to the rest of the world on the school network that will be plugged into the second NIC. This is so that I can download
    windows updates from the school network and hopefully apply them through Windows PowerShell (Is this possible?) to the servers in the private lab network.
    I am curious if it is possible to set up a AD-DS, DHCP, and DNS server so that it only communicates through one port and not talk to the rest of the world, as well as if it is possible to create a PowerShell script to check for Windows Updates on the school
    network, download them, and then distribute them to the servers inside of the lab environment?
    Please feel free to ask questions and any help or insight would be appreciated.

    What you are attempting to do is quite common.  A simple implementation can be done with what can be called a 'jump server'.  That server is the only machine in your environment that has access to the internet.  You must log into it first
    before you have access to your lab environment.  It's basically how I set up my lab.
    The jump server can also host Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).  This is a no-cost capability from Microsoft that can automatically download patches from Microsoft.  I then use a group policy in my lab domain to set the update server of my
    domain to point at the WSUS server.  If fact, this sort of configuration is quite common in corporate environments, too.  It ensures that corporate machines are not going out to the internet to download patches, allowing the corporate managers to
    download and test the patches to see if they break anything before deploying to the rest of the corporate machines as a whole.  So the jump server has one IP address that is routable to the internet and a second network on your lab's domain network.
    The jump server does NOT run any routing software, so no machine from the lab can access the external network.

  • Using modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi) : impossible to create a new Wi-Fi network (2.4 or 5 GHz) ? Conflict with DHCP / NAT and so on. No answer from the Apple help desk, Air Port Utility 6.1 unusable (configuration = Win 7)

    Good afternoon,
    My internet connection is delivered by a modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi), it's almost the same than a BBox-2 from Belgacom (software and configuration).
    This modem has 4 ethernet port, 2 for TV, 2 for LAN, the WAN port is RJ-11 and the connection is a PPPoE (in fact, it's the Belgacom network). I also got a Wi-Fi 802.11g on it.
    The main raison why I bought a TC is the dual Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (for 802.11n), especially for my MacBook Pro and my iPad 3.
    First of all, can I do the following with my TC :
    1) connecting the TC using a ethernet cable from one of the two modem's LAN ports to the TC's WAN port
    2) create a new Wi-Fi network using the TC ?
    Up to now, after 2 man days of configuration, my TC is connected to my existing LAN network, as a bridge, but there is no new Wi-Fi network.
    The Airport Utility 6.1 "Wizard" is just un-usable and I need to use a Win 7 laptop in order to get access to all the configuration !
    The standard manual is very poor.
    Does someone already create a new Wi-Fi network using its TC connected by Ethernet on a modem/router device ? How do you set up the DHCP (and NAT) ? Which range did you use ?
    Sincerely yours,
    AVDB

    This is easy enough to do..
    Plug the TC directly into a computer.. without other connections to do the setup.
    Using the newly installed 5.6 utility.
    Bridge the TC.
    Create a wireless network.
    This is an older screen shot and I would set security to WPA2 Personal only not WPA/WPA2 Personal as shown above.
    I do recommend you use wireless names that are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Update the TC..
    Now plug it into the modem router.. it will be a part of the network without doing NAT and DHCP itself.. which you do not want.. that leads to double NAT issues.. but it is a WAP that provides access to devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands directly to the main router.

  • Audio background not sync with function back and forward

    Hello,
    I have a complexe presentation with several slides.
    It's impossible to add audio for each slide in my case.
    So i've choose to add my audio in background.
    When my project is exported, the functions play and stop are
    ok.
    But when i use function back or forward, it always work with
    the slides, not with the audio in background.
    In fact, the audio track continue in a normal way, and is not
    synchronize at all...
    Is it possible to synchronize the audio background ?
    Or is it a bug ??
    Thanks a lot...
    Alex

    Hi Alex
    That is the purpose of the background audio.
    Perhaps it will help to advise generally about audio in
    Captivate. Audio can be added in Three different places.
    * Background level - Where it plays continuously throughout
    the movie and typically stops when the movie ends.
    * Slide level - Typically or often contains narration
    * Object level - Audio begins playing when the object appears
    Hmmm, thinking about it, object level audio seems to want to
    continue playing even after the object has disappeared from view.
    Maybe you could try attaching the desired audio clip to a caption
    or image? Give that a go and see if it maybe comes close to what
    you are seeking.
    Cheers... Rick :)

  • Weird DNS and GATEWAY IP Address

    iPad 1 and iPad 2, join wireless network, pulls 192.168.1.199 for a DNS and GATEWAY address, force a STATIC (manual) of 192.168.1.1 works, revert back to DHCP, keeps 192.168.1.1 until offsite and attempt to reconnect.
    Tried Renew Lease, still pulls 192.168.1.199, have to always force 1.1 and revert back to DHCP afterwards.
    Router has static IP (Cablevision), 255.255.255.248 Subnet with OPEN-DNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) Even if I use Cablevision, Google, Verizon DNS, always pulls a 1.199 IP for GW and DNS.
    Tried 3 different routers, still weird.
    Any ideas?

    Ive recently installed Solaris v10 X86 and have two
    questions. The system is a Dell E521 with 4GB RAM
    and 1GB SysKonnect NIC, and internet is provided via
    a cable modem, thats plugged into a Netgear router,
    and the Solaris 10 box is plugged into the Netgear
    router via a CAT5 ethernet cable.
    1. I can connect to my router login page using the
    following URL:
    http://192.168.1.1/start.htm and I can also connect
    to various web pages such as yahoo, if I first "ping
    yahoo.com" (on another machine thats internet
    enabled) and then plug the web sites ip address into
    the Solaris/Mozilla browser. So it appears that I
    havent been successful at pointing the Solaris x86
    at a DNS server to resolve the DNS name.You can either copy nsswitch.dns to nsswitch.conf, or you can modify nsswitch.conf so that 'dns' is used for hostname lookups.
    2. I've purchased a commercially available software
    package and it requires a static ip address for this
    Solaris x86 server. If the ip address changes, itll
    stop working by design and require that I reacquire
    the license file. When connecting through this
    Netgear router, how do I lock this Solaris v10 x86
    server into a specific ip address? (the ip address
    floats presently when cycling my PCs on/off)
    presently, and assume the Solaris box will too,
    usually through an ip range of 192.168.1.<1 through
    5>One method is setting the router so that the server's MAC address is tied to a specific IP.
    Otherwise you can edit /etc/hostname.<interface> and place a static address there, forgoing DHCP services from the router. You may want the address to appear outside the router's DHCP range.

  • Windows DHCP Server and Linux DHCP Relay Agent

    We are trying to organize a VLAN (say VLAN 1) for guests who must be assigned IP addresses from a DHCP server in a different VLAN (VLAN 2). This DHCP server is configured with two scopes - 172.16.0.0/24 (for VLAN 2) and 172.16.4.0/24 (for the Guests
    VLAN 1). The DHCP server successfully distributes addresses to clients in its VLAN (it has the IP address 172.16.0.2). For the clients in the other VLAN a DHCP Relay Agent has been setup on the router. It is DHCRELAY running on Linux (CentOS) which has
    been configured to accept the DHCPDISCOVER broadcasts coming on the VLAN1 interface of the router and forward these to the DHCP server. The IP address of the VLAN1 interface of the router is 172.16.4.254 and on the VLAN2 interface - 172.16.0.254
    The problem is that the DHCP server won't respond with a DHCPOFFER message to the relay agent. I have traced the frames on the router and on the DHCP server. They arrive on the DHCP server with the correct GIADDR of the relay agent. According to all documentation,
    if a scope has been configured on the DHCP server and it receives a unicast message with the GIADDR set by a relay agent that matches one of the configured scopes, the DHCP server must send a unicast DHCPOFFER to the relay agent. But it doesn't.
    Here is what Wireshark reports (ignore the Destination port unreachable messages, the DHCP service was stopped at the time Wireshark was running)
    When the service is running, there are just DHCPDISCOVERs - no OFFER. You can see that the server has the two scopes configured:
    The relay agent seems to work normally - it forwards the DHCPDISCOVERs to the server continuously (tried many times with ipconfig /renew on the client).
    I read many posts about this problem. Some users had other services running on the DHCP server that used the DHCP port, but I don't have such an issue (you see that when the service is stopped, an ICMP port unreachable is sent which is correct). Others however
    did not find a solution. Am I missing something? Is there something specific when using the DHCRELAY agent from DHCPD? Can I turn on some verbose logging to track this down? Thanks in advance.

    WIth DHCP, there is really nothing to configure. If the Relay Agent/IP Helper is pointing to it, and the VLAN subnet exactly matches the scope subnet, then it should just work.
    What I've seen in the VLAN config is either a static route back to the subnet the DHCP server itself is sitting on is not configured or incorrectly configured, or there are ports blocked (need UDP, too, since that's what DHCP uses to pass the OFFER), and
    other necessary ports are opened, then it should just work.
    Sometimes NIC teaming on the DHCP server will cause it. Not sure. Microsoft doesn't support teaming prior to Windwos 2012, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't work. Don't get me wrong, teaming works nicely, but they just don't support it because they never
    certified the drivers, that's all.
    The issues I've seen with DHCP relays and VLANs in the forums are usually based on misconfigs in the VLAN or ports blocked. Sometimes we'll refer to call Microsoft Support for specific, hands-on assistance. And searching the threads, from what
    I've found that if they did call support, they've never posted back what the problem was based on or the resolution. I can post a couple of them for you to read through, but there were never any response with the actual resolution.

  • Open DNS and internet sharing

    I am seeing strange behavior, and wondering if anyone has a thought about what is going on.
    I am at a hotel with fast internet service over ethernet, but, for whatever reason, DNS seems very slow if I use DHCP to connect (timeouts of 5-10 secs to get to a new site). If I switch to DHCP with fixed DNS, and use the Open DNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) the latency issues go away.
    The interesting thing is that I am sharing the internet connection over Airport to my wife's computer (she connecting thru DHCP). If I use a fixed DNS for MY computer, then her computer cannot connect thru internet sharing. But if I use the (slow) DHCP connection, then she can connect through mine. I have not tried setting up her computer with a fixed DNS, as she really doesn't like me to change settings on her computer
    Is this a known limitation of internet sharing, or is there something I should know?
    TIA

    In more detail, if my ethernet (the computer that is doing the sharing), is set up with Configure: Using DHCP, and DNS Server: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 (in Network Panel for Ethernet), then the computer connecting thru Internet Sharing in Sharing Panel is not able to access some or all resources thru http (ie, pages fail to load, or do not fully load).
    However, if I clear the DNS Server part in the Network Panel, thereby using the the DNS Servers supplied by the hotel, then my computer's connection to the internet is slower, with long waits (presumably due to a slow DNS server), but computers accessing the internet via Airport thru my shared connection are able to browse the internet successfully.
    I suspect that when I have a fixed DNS server in my computer, that fact is not broadcast to computers using the shared connection. But I am not an expert in TCP/IP, and may well be confused about how DHCP, DNS, and Apple's Internet Sharing work together.
    Thanks for any ideas you have

  • Creating a simpel network with Lion Server, and add Windows XP computers to it

    We have a Mac Lion Server and 3 computers with Windows XP. Previously we had a Windows 2003 server with a domain name: "MYDOMAIN". When logging into Windows it logs into this domain.
    I would like to replace this Windows 2003 server with my new Mac Lion server so, I build up a test setup. I connected the Mac Lion server (iMac) with my Windows XP pc with an ethernet cable. Then, I setup a DHCP, DNS and Open directory in the Server Admin. Added users. I configured the IP adres of the server to a static one by setting the IPv4 to "using DHCP with manual address".
    Then I wanted to let my Windows XP server join the domain of the Lion Server, however I cannot let my Windows XP client connect to the domain of the Lion Server.
    I read in the advanced administration that you can set up Windows XP for domain login. Where do I find the name of this domain? It should be stated in the server admin, open directory, settings, general tab, but the only thing I find here is: Role: Open Directory Master.
    In Windows XP, when I explore in explorer the Microsoft-Windows Network I can see in "MYDOMAIN" the MacLion Server and my Windows XP pc. So sharing files is no problem.
    However, I really want to create a new domain with my Lion Server and let the Windows XP pc's login to the new domain.
    I hope anyone can help me.

    Thanks for the info.
    I read some stuff about this indeed, so I was thinking, because we have a small network, could it be possible to share files on the server via a workgroup?
    If we add the 3 Windows XP pc's to the same workgroup as the Lion Server, would there be a problem?
    Then at startup of Windows XP, should we login to the pc instead of the domain? And where would I find the Lion server in Windows XP?

  • Need back and forward functions for moves

    that's the problem! i'm not using anything for move storing (yet) because I am confused about what exactly needs to be stored for a move. should be something like a node of (player, player's move, opponent's move)?why would you want to store the move AND the opponent's move in a single node? (not saying you're wrong, just wondering why you'd want to do that.)
    Think about the information that you'd need to know in order to go backward or forwards.
    Would you need to know which player made the move?
    Would you need to know what the player's move was?

  • Report on DNS and WINS settings

    Hi,
    It doesn't look like there are built-in reports to show DNS and WINS settings for client machines in SCCM 2012? We are going to run a script to change all clients with static DNS and WINS settings and I need to have a report to show client machines with
    and without the new settings. Can anyone help with this?
    I have enabled 'DNS Server Search Order', 'WINS Primary Server' and 'WINS Secondary Server' in hardware inventory classes > Network Adapter Configuration (Win32_NetworAdapterConfiguration). I've done this in the Default client settings. There are other
    client setting policies with a higher priority but I assume they are cumulative and so as this isn't set on the other client setting policies it should implement this?
    Thanks,

  • DHCP Error with WLC 2504 and Aironet 2600 setup across subnets

    Hey guys
    I have just setup a new WLC 2504 controller to manage a WiFi service that will span 6 geographic locations.  The local networks at each location are on different subnets (all 192.168.x.x) and are linked up via IPSEC VPN links, and there is Active Directory spanning the sites, with DNS and DHCP servers running at each location.
    I tested the WLC at our main office with a single AP, and it worked fine.  The AP set itself up, and wireless devices connect with no probs. Great!  Yesterday I headed out to one of our remote sites, and connected an AP to their network - and that seemed to work fine too.  Within a few minutes I was able to see the WiFi network I'd setup, and my smartphone connected to it straight away (as I'd rpeviously connected at the main office), so I was pretty happy that all was working well.
    This morning however I've had notification that wifi performance at the remote site isn't great.  I've got someone to check their ip address, and I've found that their IP address and default gateway match the LAN at the main office where the WLC is based - NOT the LAN where the wireless client is.  Obvioulsy this is not ideal!
    So I guess my question is, what have I done wrong?  (I guess I HAVE done something wrong!?).  And how can I get wireless clients at remote sites to pick up an IP from the DHCP server at THEIR site?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello Tim,
    What mode your APs are in? Local mode? or FlexConnect mode?
    If local mode, then all the traffic will be tunnelled to the WLC and they'll be same as if you are connecting from the WLC location.
    If you use FlexConnect APs (which is recommended for remote sites) you can configure FlexConnect groups on the WLC and add each location in a specific group. In that group you can decide what VLAN the users should be in.
    Check this link for FlexConnect group configuration

  • PXE boot issue with DHCP and SCCM server on different subnets

    I'm working with a client on the operating system deployment module of SCCM.
    Their network configuration currently has a single large subnet for client
    computers with a DHCP server on the same subnet. The SCCM subnet is
    configured on a seperate subnet with no DHCP server on the subnet. We want to
    configure client computers to be able to boot using the PXE client to deploy
    OS images to the machines but can not get PXE-boot to work correctly.
    Also, the client does not want to make changes to their network
    infrastructure routers or switches to remedy this problem. Are there settings
    on the DHCP or SCCM servers we can implement to make this work? If so, what
    needs to be installed or configured on each server. We currently already have
    WDS installed on the SCCM server and the SCCM server is configured as a PXE
