Brightness adjustment in Final Cut Express HD.

Dear members;
I have a clip that is a little dark and I would like to make it brighter. I've tried the levels adjustments for the black and white points. While it has improved a bit I still feel that I need to improve it more.
After trying the brightness adjustment in Final Cut Express I found that the clip looked too washed out and the colors became somewhat lifeless. The contrast and brightness adjustments combined didn't produced very good results either. This is the route I would have taken with a digital still photo but it doesn't seem to be working with my clip.
What am I doing wrong ? Is there a way to improve the brightness so that the clip doesn't look washed out and the colors still look good ? How can I make this adjustment ?
Thank you in advance,
Joseph Chamberlain

Hi Ian:
I haven't tried the gamma filters yet. I will give it a try.
This may be the case you describe (a shot that can't be saved or improved) but I would like to think that it can. The footage is from a movie and I extracted a 20 sec clip to include in a presentation.
Since you mention both, what are the differences between the Gamma and Gamma correction filters ?
Also, how can I post a screenshot to this list as you suggested ? Is there a page on this web site where photos can be posted for members of this discussion groups ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Final Cut Express 3.5 vs. Final Cut Express 4?

I am looking at purchasing Final Cut Express for my company. We have iMovie 6 and have been doing some client YouTube videos using it. We'd like to do more with our video editing but don't feel the need for Final Cut Pro, so FCE seemed like good compromise.
What I'm trying to figure out is which is the better option for us, FCE 3.5 or 4. I've read that 4 does not include something called Soundtrack, but that you can do voiceovers and adjust/fix audio. Can you put music MP3s into your video in FCE4 like you can in iMovie? Or would we need Soundtrack for that?

FCE4 can handle audio like any video-editing app, but it isn't a designated audio program like Soundtrack or Logic. As Tom said, all audio should be 12-bit or 16-bit AIFF before importing.
Note: if you're planning on shooting AVCHD or editing on a machine running Snow Leopard, FCE4 is the only supported version.

  • Final Cut Express 4.0.1 Update

Can anyone provide a link to update from Final Cut Express 4.0 to 4.0.1?
I would really appreciate the help!
    Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge the only thing the update does is to enable you to edit AVCHD.
I am not sure about that as I have the software boxes for both FCXP 3.5 HD and FCXP 4 and from description on both boxes and from Amazon, also, both these versions of FCXP were supposed to already support AVCHD.
I had to update/upgrade to these versions of FCXP when I upgraded my Sony digital video camcorder that uses AVCHD.
Here's the feature description for FCXP 4.
Edit like a pro. Final Cut Express 4.

Mix and edit DV, HDV, and AVCHD video in a single Timeline*
Watch effects in real time thanks to RT Extreme with Dynamic RT
Import iMovie '08 video projects with cuts and cross dissolves
Precisely adjust the animation of any effect or transition using keyframes

Here's the feature description for FCXP 3.5 HD.
More Powerful Video Editing for DV, HDV, and AVCHD
Capture clips from your camcorder over a single FireWire or USB cable, then use the new Open Format Timeline in Final Cut Express 4 to edit together DV, HDV, and AVCHD material, even if they have different frame rates. Fine-tune your choices with professional ripple, roll, slip, and slide editing functions, either in the Timeline or a dedicated Trim window. And when it comes time to add effects, Dynamic RT lets you instantly preview effects, filters, transitions, and multistream composites in real time without rendering.

  • Keyframing in Final Cut Express HD

    Hi,
I'm a film student and I've been using FCP 4 for quite a while. I`m goign to buy a new mac soon and wanted to buy Final Cut Express HD but I want to know how the keyframing works
is it just like in FCP4? or is it different?

What Al says is perfectly correct, however there are workarounds that can achieve a keyframed effect with most of the filters.
As an example, say you wanted to change a colour clip to B/W gradually.
All you would do would be copy the clip and put it above the original on V2. Then add a B/W filter. Finally adjust the Opacity levels of the B/W clip to make it slowly change.
This and other techniques can overcome the lack of Filter Keyframing in most effects.

  • Rendering a jpeg image in Final Cut Express

I have a jpeg image which shows up correctly in the captured bin of Final Cut Express once it is imported, but it will not render properly. The background is black in the viewer, and the image(jpeg) in the center of the screen is a bright green square.
Im able to add motion to the image, but it does not show up in the viewer as the image, it is only a green square.
Can this be fixed in FCE?
The original file is from an email, probably from a pc, does this cause compatibitity issues?

If you have access to an image editing tool such as photoshop, I would advice you import the image into Phototshop and save it in a different format e.g, GIF format and re-import it into Final Cut Express HD. This could solve your rendering problem if all you need is to use a Still image.

  • Final Cut Express 2 and Lion?

    Hi,
I have some thoughts on FCE2 (2.0.2) and the Lion. Is it fully compatible or is it recommended that I buy Final Cut X in the App Store? I am interested in buying a new MacBook Pro 13-inchand need to know about my Final Cut Express 2 is fully compatible.
    Thanks in advance.

Have been trying out FCX over the past month or so and not only is there key framing capability, but I would say its key framing techniques are more intuitive and the results superior to the legacy FCE and FCP.
I think I pretty much agree with Ian Brown's views on the new program.  The majority of FCE (and probably FCS) users should find that FCX is more of an opportunity than a limitation to their creativity. It's different and requires an adjustment to our thinking, but most of us can get the hang of the new approach and terminology (which I am Not a fan of) in short order. (That's not to say that I don't agree with much of the criticism from the film & broadcast people, because I do.)

  • When I move high quality clips into my timeline in Final Cut Express HD, they look and export low quality. I have tried converting the clips and de-interlacing them, but they always look the same, What is the problem? Thanks so much.

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

  • No audio and flicker on Canvas : Final Cut Express

I imported some footage onto Final cut Express and once it was imported the audio and video were fine. Then five minute later the audio this appears, sometimes I press play on the viewer and the audio will play for a split second and disappear. The audio on my MacBook seems to be operating fine on every other program I use. I really need help on this. No audio is working. I een imported a regular song to see if taht would play and it would but with no sound. The sound lever's seem to be bouncing up and down, which signifies that there is sound but it's not hearable.
The other problem that I am having is that my Canvas seems to flicker bright and dark (normal contrast) when I playback the sequence on the canvas. This as never happened before.
    thanks for reading!

What is FCE's audio output set to? Look in View > Audio Playback.
What video format did you import and does the Easy Setup reflect this?
    What are your Sequence Settings?

  • Cropping Single HDV Clips in Final Cut Express

    Hi,
I am using Final Cut Express to edit short HDV clips (max 6 sec) of microscopic biological specimens for web viewing. For my purposes I use HDV for a higher resolution but I would still like to change the frame size (width and height) of my clips in the Canvas before exporting. In order to remove unnecessary background to reduce file size and retain a high quality clip. In older versions of FC (Pro 2 or 3) you could go to Sequence Settings and change the frame size by changing the apect ratio to custom but FCE doesn't have this option. I need to know if it is possible to do this in FCE before exporting so I can adjust my frame size multiple times if necessary.

FCE is not a resolution independent application. It is resolution specific HDV or DV. You can also crop for final output on export with an application that has a cropping function.

  • Speed changes cause Final Cut Express 2 to quit

I have a video that runs about a minute over two hours. I wanted to change the speed by adjusting the speed change feature to 102% so as to be able to fit it on a 2-hour dvd.
However, even with my dual G5 (4GB RAM) the app unexpectedly quits before it's even halfway completed rendering.
I'm on version 2.0.3. (Seems like this version of Final Cut Express has more of a problem with Tiger than it did with 10.3.9, BTW)
    Any suggestions would be welcome!

A 2% speed reduction is not going to look good. There's no way you can reduce 29.97fps by 2% and produce a frame rate that's compressible with anything like correct frame interpolation. Not without serious expenditure of time, money, and learning, After Effects and ReTimer. You'd be much better off actually cutting five minutes out of your movie. I guarantee if you look hard enough at it you can do it. There's no 2:01:00:00 story that can't be told in 1:58:00:00.

  • TA26655 opening final cut express movie in imovie hd

I need to fix the exposure in a school play video that I shot, but I only have imovie hd along with idvd hd to create the dvd.
I'm going to have to purchase an older copy of final cut express to do so, I think. If I open the imovie hd file in final cut express and tone down the exposure, can I then import that "fixed" file back into imovie hd or will I need to finish editing in final cut express and make a dvd from that? My ultimate goal is to make a disk image of the dvd movie for making future copies. What is the best way to do this?

    Hi
Can only answer parts of this but anyhow.
    A. iMovie and FinalCut - or really iMovie HD6 and FinalCut Express 4 or FinalCut Pro 6 - doesn't use the same way to handle VIDEO. So one can not jump from one to the other.
    B. This has been made even worse as
    • iMovie HD6 - and iMovie'08 to 11 - HAS nothing in common but the name - not a bit of code is related.
    • FinalCut Express and FinalCut Pro was one way compatible from Express to Pro - not back
    • FinalCut is now also disgraced in naming - as FCE/FCP - doesn't have any relation to FinalCut Pro X either.
So this is not as easy as it could have been.
You can in iMovie HD6 - Export out as a full quality QuickTime.mov movie and in FinalCut Express or Pro import it to lay a final touch to it - BUT - all is glued in so no further changes can be made to what's done in iMovie HD e.g. texts and transitions etc.
    BUT !
The tools to color-correct and brightness / contrast adjustments is superior in FinalCut to iMovie where they are but basic. (nearly of no use at all - very very raw)
So this and some other tool's made me take the jump into FinalCut Pro (6.0.4) and I love it. Steep learning curve - but the freedom is fantastic.
Must problem is in the very beginning
    • selecting what kind of project You are doing - e.g. PAL SD-Video 48kHz audio
    • how the material is stored - and setting up the scratch disks (they jump back - so one must keep a very observant eye to this - EVERY time starting-up)
    • but when this is a natural habit to get all sorted out (photos, audio and video where it must be) then the fun really begins.
Good Luck - and have a fantastic time - Key-framing is just one of the wonderful tings You'll find.
    Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie vs Final Cut Express and Pinnacle Studio

Before I had the Imac (6 months now) for my video or photos I use Pinnacle Studio 11. Now I want to update the IMac to Leopard with ILife 09. Now I also want to use Final Cut Express for video editing. However since I seen the introduction of IMovie 09 I'm not sure which investment to make.
My question to you: with my experience with Pinnacle will Imovie 09 apply for video editing or should I also get the FCE. And what about my projects done in Pinnacle Studio.
Thanks in advance for all your reactions.
    Ron

I migrated from using a PC and Pinnacle Studio 11 to a MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express about 9 months ago. I had no previous experience with a Mac, so it has been a very steep learning curve for me. But I have been studying the bright minds on this forum for awhile and have also been taking advantage of various Final Cut tutorials on the web. I eventually stopped regretting leaving Pinnacle behind and I have come to love Final Cut and the greater creative control it offers. As for iMovie, I found it a little too basic for what I want, but it may be suitable for your needs.
As far as your Pinnacle projects are concerned, finish them up and then immerse yourself in Final Cut. I think you'll be glad you did.

  • Zooming in on Final Cut Express 4

How do I zoom in on Videos in Final Cut Express 4? What I mean is like I have a video and I want to zoom in on someone to let people see who the person is. Like if theres a school photo I want it the whole picture Zoom in on myself then zoom back to the whole picture again. Please answer Thanks in Advance!

Load your clip into the viewer, and click on the Motion tab. Adjust the Scale parameter.
I would recommend searching the manual for "keyframing".

  • Final Cut express rendering problem

    Hello,
I'm creating a QuickTime file on Final Cut to be used as a background in iDVD. I'm importing graphics/text from Adobe Photoshop and when I look at it unrendered, it looks perfect.
However, as soon as I render it (and the subsequent output), there seems to be horrible aliasing.
I've tried to adjust the Render Control Tab, but I don't even know if my version has one (Final Cut Express 1.0, talk about old school!)
    Please help!

This problem is from another and I will learn more tonight. Thanks for asking.

  • Making a Live Music Video with Final Cut Express

I'm trying to make a music video for my band. We have filmed 1 of our performances using 3 video cameras. Is there a way I can sync on Final Cut Express 4 all the 3 videos with the music I have also recorded, so that I can see and choose out of the 3 what's the best at any given time?
    Any help appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Max

This is actually a feature of FCPro. FCE was not designed to do this, however there is a workaround.
First, place each video on its own video track. Then adjust the positioning of each video track relative to the audio so all the video tracks are in sync with it and, by extension, with each other.
Then you have to resize & move each video in the Canvas so you can see all 3 of them at the same time in the Canvas window. You can do this by opening each video in the Canvas, turn on Image+WireFrame and then resize & move each video as desired. This is much easier if you just use Piero's free QuarterPIP plugin instead of doing it manually.
Now you should be able to play the timeline and see all 3 videos in the Canvas, sync'd to the audio. From there you can pick & choose where to cut from one video to another. Just keep in mind that video on higher tracks will obscure video on lower tracks, so you will have to actually cut out portions of your video on tracks v2, v3 etc that you don't want to use. When you are finished, undo the QuarterPIP filter (or the manual resizings you originally did) and you should have your finished video.
