Brightness and Volume Display Broken

Hello,
Recently, I have installed the latest Mac OS X 10.5.6 update. Everything afterwards has been fine however, when I press the volume/brightness keys on my laptop, the little picture that displays the volume level etc now shows as blank. It still shows the level indicator bar but the rest of the image is white. I was wondering if this could be fixed perhaps through the replacement of a config file or something but I have no idea.
I hope that someone can provide help with the issue.
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions:
The function keys may have been reset.
Check in Keyboard & Mouse in System Preferences and be sure the box marked
"Use all F1, F2 etc...." is either checked or unchecked (try both).
Also check the Keyboard Shortcuts.
You might also check Universal Access to see if the keys have been reassigned.

  • My profile only- Brightness and volume buttons stop working (+)

I am having intermittent problems with my profile in OS X. It's the latest update, which I can't check (More on that in a minute).
At random intervals of more than one week, my MBP's brightness and volume buttons stop responding. As soon as I notice that, I try to open system prefs. One bounce on the dock, then nothing. Console: one bounce, then nothing. Terminal: same thing.
This only applies to Apple software, and only some Apple software. "About this mac" doesn't work. Same applies to Safari, Disk Utility, App Store, Activity Monitor, Quicktime, etc. Chrome, Firefox, Pandora, Adium, et al function normally. For some reason, iPhoto and Garageband do start and run normally.
I just tried restarting Finder (shift + Apple menu, selected 'Force quit Finder' with Finder in the foreground). Now Finder won't start. Spotlight runs, but you can't use it to open anything that won't open via the dock or Finder.
My trackpad settings have changed as well- it no longer recognizes 'tap to select'.
I tried logging into my 'safe' troubleshooting account (untouched settings, nothing installed). Everything works fine under the safe account; the only trouble I could spot was that the cursor wouldn't change from an unmoving pinwheel. I could still click on things, open apps, etc.
I'm 99% sure that a simple restart will cure everything but I'd like to solve the problem. It's kind of a big deal when my primary machine gorps up for no reason.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Apparently, part of an old install of Little Snitch persisted when I upgraded machines. The above example repeats itself over and over in my console messages, hundreds of times.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I just did a clean uninstall using the latest Little Snitch installer- no more console messages about it.
And I found about 20 instances of this crash under /library/logs/diagnostic reports (all within the same 5-minute window)(also, /Library, not ~/Library):

Right now, all I can do is wait for the problem to happen again.

  • HT3932 Wireless Keyboard Update 2.0  his update doesn't work!  I'm at 10.5.8 on my old iMac G5, installed the update and brightness and volume just do not work.  What next?

This update doesn't work!  I'm at 10.5.8 on my old iMac G5, installed the update and brightness and volume just do not work.  What next?

I have a brand new wireless keyboard... so it's never going to work.  BUT... I found a sort of work round!
Since it's eyeTV that I want to control the volume more than the system volume I discovered cmd and up/down arrows do the job.  I gess I'll forgo the brightness function.
I'm a little frustrated that it appears Apple seems to want to push me towards an upgrade of a perfectly serviceable iMac G5.  I'll be keeping it to watch TV, surf the web, wordprocess and let the macbook pro handle photos & video.

  • Brightness and volume keys not working after switch to Yosemite

Once Yosemite was installed, the brightness (F1, F2) and volume (F10, F11, F12) keys on my macbook pro stopped working. I have already checked the System Pref>Keyboard and unchecked the "standard function" box, done an SMC and PRAM reset, to no avail. My sound in and out are both set to built-in. Any suggestions?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
When iOS 6.1 comes out I would update.

  • Sleep and volume buttons broken, but there's another problem.

The sleep and volume buttons on my Ipod touch stopped working recently, and on top of that, my speaker randomly cuts out.
If I squeese the top and bottom of my Ipod hard enough, I can get the sleep button to work for about 3 seconds.
The volume buttons have not responded to anything.
My speaker started cutting out on the first day I got it, but I thought it was because I had set it up wrong. Squeesing the corner where the speaker is located will make it work again, but only for a short amount of time.
I plan on taking my Ipod to an Apple store to have it serviced, but there is one problem.
I accidently cracked my Ipod's screen. The buttons stopped working MONTHS after it happened, and the speaker was already broken.
My Ipod is still under Apple's 1 year warenty, so would they fix the buttons for free under the warenty even if the screen was cracked?
I don't care about the screen getting fixed, I just want the buttons to work again.

I know the screen will not be covered, and I don't need it to be fixed.
What I want to know is will they fix the buttons?
I don't think the buttons would have broken because of the screen because the buttons broke 4 months after the screen broke.
And the speaker was broken right out of the box.

  • Brightness, media, and volume keys broken

I am at my wit's end trying to restore functionality to my special keys on my late 2007 macbook running OS X 10.6.8.
Some time two days ago something happened and now suddenly I cannot use the mute key (F10), the volume keys (F11, F12), the brightness keys (F1, F2), or the media keys (play/pause (F8), forward (F9), rewind(F7)). Probably the media eject key is non-functional too, but I'm afraid to put in a CD and test it in case I can't get it out.
Interestingly, the exposé "all windows" button (F3) works fine, as does the dashboard button (F4).
I think I instigated the problem installing and poorly uninstalling logitech command center or maybe somehow poorly uninstalling logmein.com sound drivers, but that's just guilt by association AND I've tried everything I can think of in terms of uninstalling those apps, reinstalling them, and carefully uninstalling them correctly. Still, my half-baked best theory of what happened is that the logitech software reassigned some key functions somehow.
I am using a logitech K750 external keyboard and a M510 mouse via a unifying receiver. The keyboard is the version intended for a PC but was working pretty fine on my macbook (windows key worked as command key, Fn+volume keys worked as expected). I installed Logitech Control Center (LCC) for Macintosh because I wanted to adjust the horizontal scrolling via the mouse wheel (it was way too fast for my tastes). Installation of LCC prompted the keyboard setup assistant ("Your keyboard cannot be identified..."), even though I was only interested in adjusting the mouse and the keyboard was working fine. I ran through the setup assistant as instructed. Roughly since then, I've lost volume adjusting functionality on both the external (logitech) and built-in keyboard as well as all the other functions mentioned on the built-in keyboard.
I've been obsessed with this the last day and a half with no luck. Here is a pretty comprehensive list of what I've tried to fix the problem, though I may forget something since I've done so much:
    -removed all peripheral hardware.
    -use a different user account.
    -SMC Reset
    -PRAM reset
    -Safe mode
-System preferences reset/ inspect all settings related to keyboard, universal access, text to speech according to the numerous help files I found online. (yes, I unchecked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"
-turned off all google chrome background apps and inspected the key bindings of all chrome extensions.
-Removed Cache folder from library folder.
-removed recently installed software that I suspected might be related, reinstalled, re-uninstalled.
-installed OnyX and run all the maintenance/restoration routines I saw in it that didn't sound too scary.
-Turned on keyboard viewer and verified that each guilty key is recognized by the system when I press it (they all are!).
No luck. I don't have a snow leopard install disk but I just bid on one on ebay because I'm starting to feel like my only option is a time-machine full system restore
Please help! I'm still holding out hope that there is some simple way to get under the hood and re-assign or reset the keys. I can't even figure out how to disconnect the logitech peripherals (keyboard and mouse), though I've removed all the logitech software I can find.

I have an early 2007 Mac Book Pro 17" and had to re-install OS X 10.6.8 because of some problems created while installing a 2nd operating system.
After installing 10.6. the screen brightness keys wouldn't work (F1 and F2), I tried updating to 10.6.8 that didn't solve the problem either.
I'm still having this problem and plan to try to fix it today. I had previously seen a link where someone was explaining which files or extensions in the Library folder/directory control those functions and to see if they were all present.
I will search for that link again as I forgot to save it. If that works i'll share the link with you later.

  • Gnome Brightness and Volume Meter

So, whenever I turn compositing on in Metacity, I get the nice pretty popup with transparent background and all that for volume. However, the brightness popup remains the same as it was before. Now, this wasn't a terrible problem at first, but it's now becoming bothersome, especially since I'm now using notify-osd, and the volume meter comes up in a notification as opposed to Gnome's native display. Has anyone else had this problem/know how to fix it?
    Peter

I'm not sure but perhaps the gnome brightness app is not aware that compositing is enabled (i.e. it doesn't check) whereas the sound daemon does?  Mine behaves in exactly the same way as yours using Compiz.

    Hi, pdas786
Have you also installed Hotkey Features Integration? If not, it can be found here. This is the program that displays those indicators that are now missing from your system. If you have already installed it, which version are you using?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Brightness and volume control keys not working with windows 7?

brightness, volume control and some other keys keys are not working with windows 7 with macbook pro retina. Can I fix it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Have you installed Boot Camp drivers? You need them to make your computer work properly on Windows, and to use your function keys as Play or Pause, volume and brightness keys.
To install them, follow these steps:
    1. Press the X key while your Mac is starting to start into OS X.
    2. Open Boot Camp Assistant and tick only the option to download Windows support software.
    3. Windows support software will be downloaded and Boot Camp Assistant will ask you to burn it into a DVD or USB drive, so do it.
    4. Start into Windows, insert the DVD or USB drive and install Boot Camp drivers. Your Mac and your volume and brightness keys will be working after installing the drivers

Is the problem with the on-screen keyboard or an external bluetooth connected keyboard?

  • Brightness problem - New Display, Old Mac Pro

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with the brightness control on a new 24" LED display for my 2007 MacPro with 10.4.11. The display is attached with a Gefen dvi to mini plug adapter (+ usb). It is VERY bright and this display has no external brightness buttons. I'm using an extended aluminum wired keyboard and the brightness function keys on my keyboard are not responding. As far as I remember the brightness keys worked on my old monitor which recently passed away. I have run the latest update for keyboards for this OS.
Any possibility that this is an OS 10.4.11 issue? I also don't have a brightness slider in the system prefs>display like others (probably using a newer OS) have mentioned. Other forums have suggested everything from the adapter, to USB issues, to the possibility that Apple designed a monitor with no brightness control. (?)
Your knowledge and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Jen

With the Gefen converter, you need to install software for brightness control.

  • Adjusting brightnesss and volume without pressing FN

    hi all
i would to find out how to adjust brightness and volume of my powerbook g4 15" 1.5ghz, without pressing FN
currently, to adjust, i hold "fn" and press F1/2 for brightness and f3(mute), f4/5 for volume.
my friends with macbook pro or ibook g4 can just press the f1 to f5 button to adjust the brightness and volume.
is there someway to change this?

    Hi, Jeffrey.
See "Mac OS X: Portables - Using Function keys with Exposé, applications, games."
It sounds like at some point in the past you selected Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features in the System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab. Selecting that option permits the F-keys to execute their programmatic function without pressing fn, but requires you press fn to execute the corresponding hardware-related function assigned to that key.
    Good luck!

  • Period and volume discounts but do not show discount%

    HI,
Customer is using 2007A PL49. They are heavily using tier pricing(Period and volume discounts) in SAP. They do not want system to display discount % in sales document but displaying price after discount in period and volume discounts as unit price in sales document instead. The Discount% in sales document will be used as second level discount.
Any workaround to solve this problem?
    Regards
    Thomas

Customer wants the price after discount in period and volume display in AR Invoice as unit price(before discount) and make the original discount% in AR Invoice line as second level discount.
Eg in period and volume discounts
Qty     Discount      Unit price after discount
    1                             RM100
    10                           RM90
Customer wants RM90 appears as unit price(price before discount) in AR Invoice line. The price difference in volume is not considered as discount for this customer.
Any workaround to tackle this customer?
    Regards
