Brightness/Contrast Adjustment for Videos?

Is it possible to adjust the brightness & contrast
for videos on iPod?
Twenty thousand threads later and I've never heard this question asked before. If you think it looks bad, it may be that your iPod isn't working properly. Go to a store and compare it with another one, but make sure you look at your own iPod in the same store light.

It is not about payment of $19.95 (Igalsses) or $7.99(webcam settings). This is a very basic setting that should be available in the system settings. The automatic setting of the internal cam does not work great on low lighting as everyone is aware.
i am just amazed how users take in lying down and suggest solutions such as paying for a 3rd party paid app or improving the lighting in your room.

  • No volume adjustment for video clips

    Hi there!
I have noticed that the volume adjustment for video clips, set in the options pane of the clip itself, will not be respected by iTunes while playing the video.
Is there someone else with a similar issue or already with a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

I've tested all versions since 10.0.1 (for PC) and none work. Versions 10.0.1 and below will allow you to change the volume adjustmant and the equalizer setting for individual videos. No answer from apple!  You can try an older version like I did.

  • Brightness & Contrast control for SMP

I did raise my suggestion at Google Youtube discussion and wish that you could also provide an option for these controls to be available on 1.0 release, it is easy to implement using filter, useful for those using projector screen where audience could not see the dark themed video clearly could be compensate with brightness/contrast setting.

I mean a widget as creating a new button in the control bar.
For example an engineer might need to create a FastForward widget and add it to the control bar just after the play button. He'll need to configure the widget UI, it's layout and the logic that it should provide.
In in this use case, you might be able to create your brightness control widget. Won't this better then adding this behavior directly to the player code?

  • Exposure vs. Levels vs. Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layers?

I have some photos that are a bit underexposed and I'm trying to brighten them up a bit and I made a Levels adjustment layer and also experimented with the Exposure adjustment layer. Are these essentially doing the same thing OR are there reasons to have a Levels adjustment layer along with an exposure one and a Brightness/Contrast one?
    Thanks in advance.

The Exposure adjustment in Photoshop is primarily meant to correct tonal values of High Dynamic Range images, which are 32 bits. This command makes tonal adjustments using a linear color space or gamma instead of your image’s color space.  You can use it on 8 bit or 16 bit images too, but the adjustments may seem rather drastic.
When rescuing poorly exposed 8 bit or 16 bit images, I prefer Levels or Curves because you have greater control.  Brightness/Contrast, isn't something I use much.

  • Volume adjustment for videos DOES NOT WORK.

When you right-click->Get Info->Options on a VIDEO and change the Volume Adjustment slider, it has no effect. Works for music files, but not videos.
    Is this a known bug/issue?

The problem is that I want certain videos to play louder on my iPod. I can always turn my computer speakers up louder, but the volume on iPod only goes up so high...

  • Adjust for Brightness Corrections the Camera made

I have some video clips where I am trying to make two types of corrections.
I am using Warp Stabilize to correct for movement in the way I handled the camera during the filming process.  Warp Stabilize seems to do a fair job of fixing this, I can accept this for now.
Then I am trying to repair/ adjust where the camera made some auto brightness corrections when the focus was made/moved to a darker object in the scene.  It causes intermittent bright and dark lighting in the clip.
I realize both of these situations are my own fault, but I am still trying to learn how to adjust for them.
I tried using the Effect /Color Correction / Brightness and Contrast tool because this seems logical, but the results are not  smooth.  I set a key-frame on both sides of the problem point on the clip so I can stop/ lock in the effect from making changes to an area  that is good/ acceptable.  Then I move to the center point between the two key-frames I am holding as correct and make a brightness adjustment (creating a new key-frame).  This sounds like it should compensate, but I end up with even more intermittent flashes of bright and dark.
Can anyone tell me if this logic is correct and is this the correct tool I should be using to make this sort of adjustment to a clip   The adjustments are not  smooth as I would expect from key-frame.  And it appears the key-frames I set to hold what is correct are being auto adjusted.
I think there should be a metering tool  that I could use to measure/meter Brightness (ie; 1-100) throughout the clip so when I see the brightness is  varying away form my desire meter reading I could make an adjustment at that point where brightness varies to bring it back to the metered level I want to hold
Thanks for your help in advance

I've never used the Brightness/ Contrast adjustment. Curves and Levels work much better. Beyond that - if the aperture change is immediate, then split the clip on the respective point and correct each segment separately. otherwise it seems you do not quite understand how AE keyframes work. You don't "encircle" a problem, you just animate the respective parameters. In your example the only keyframe that actually holds anything useful is the one in the middle, the other two hold neutral default values. It's inevitable that you get additional brightness jumps because you are telling AE to revert to those defaults on the third keyframe, but the exposure is still wrong. Simply makes no sense. The rule of thumb is always to use as few keys as possible, especially on something as tricky as color corrections.

  • Adjustment layer (Brightness/Contrast) not rendering correctly

So I imported this big PSD file into after effects and everything looks good except this one adjustment layer, it's a brightness/contrast adjustment layer and instead of increasing the contrast in after effects it just turns the layer its suppose to adjust pitch black.
Thought this was odd given PS and AE share the same engine..

Yes, they do use the same code bassis, but some PS stuff simply is useless in AE and conversely, there are technical limitations inherent in how some of it works. The new PS Brightness&Contrast uses a weighted formula without making provision for temporal stability, hence it is of no use in AE - you wouldn't want your footage to flicker. The old algorithm on the otehr hand simply applies a dumb linear adjustment and therefore works. Not sure what you mean about smart objects - AE retains the rasterized layer data of an SO and that is all there is to work with. AE has no access to specific custom data that Photoshop uses, which in itself could just be a reference to pasted AI data or something like that. Simple technical limitations to prevent creating "loogic loopholes" and unresolvable cyclic dependencies. For more specific details please refer to the help and adapt your workflow to avoid these dead ends. There is no point in trying to finish everything in PS, if you're going AE, anyway.

  • Does iTunes have any hidden picture controls for video playback (e.g. contrast, brightness) ?

Does iTunes have any hidden picture controls for video playback (e.g. contrast, brightness) ?
I haven’t been able to find any.
Since the .m4v file type appears to prevent any video bought or rented from the iTunes Store from being played using any other program the lack of these picture controls - if indeed they are lacking - make it seriously deficient as a video player.

Thanks for the rapid response to my enquiry.
I know that it’s possible to adjust the monitor’s performance via System Preferences but it is rather long-winded and I’d rather not alter the settings for the entire screen (and then have to change them all back once finished) when it’s only the video playback window that needs adjustment.
Since iTunes provides various options using the Equalizer for adjusting sound playback it seems rather odd that they don’t have a similar panel for video.
    Regarding QuickTime.
Apparently earlier versions (such as 7) had picture controls but the current version (10.4) does not.
I assume Apple are phasing out QT whose development seems to have stopped - or rather gone backwards since it now lacks capabilities it once had - and intend in future to treat iTunes as their universal media player which no doubt makes sense from their point of view.
I wasn’t aware of the .m4v file type when I made my first and probably last video purchase via iTunes yesterday and didn’t realise that it would restrict my options for playback so completely.
The experience has really put me off buying any additional video from the iTunes Store.

  • HT201066 Quicktime player 10.1 (Mac OS X LION) - how to adjust brightness / contrast ?

Hi, I'm probably being very very thick here, but how does one adjust basic video settings n the player ?

  • Set default Settings for Brightness/Contrast Slider

I am in the throes of editing several hundred pictures. My camera has a standard tendency toward too bright and not enough contrast. While editing about a hundred pictures in Photoshop Elements 3.0 last night, the brightness/Contrast and Shadow highlight slider suddenly retained the last setting - which GREATLY enhanced my editing efficiency! Alas, today it is back to normal - the Brightness/Contrast slider default is 0 for it's associated sliders and the Shadow Highlight option is again at 50%/0/0 for the three associated sliders.
Is there a way to set a default value for the associated sliders for each of these?
(I had installed Photoshop Elements 5.0 on a trial basis up until yesterday and also have Photoshop Elements 4.0 installed, but it is such a hassle to use, I just gave up on it (and 5.0 has the same issue as 4.0 - no concurrent file browser when editing.))

Can't help you with Shadows/Highlights, but you do have an option with Brightness/Contrast. Instead of going to Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Brightness/Contrast, go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast instead. Once you've established the parameters you want for Brightness and Contrast, you can open up additional pictures and drag-and-drop the adjustment layer onto each new picture, retaining the settings from the first adjustment. This also allows you to quickly tweak the settings on the succeeding pictures, as adjustment layers can be readjusted ad infinitum.
If only Shadows/Highlights had an adjustment layer option...

  • Difference in video brightness/contrast across viewer applications

I am using FCP->Color>FCP roundtrip to grade Red footage. After I grade the clips in Color and send them back to FCP, I see a difference in brightness/contrast of the graded clips when playing in FCP. And when I export the final output to quicktime and play it in quicktime player, I see further difference in brightness and contrast. Essentially the clips appear darker when played in QT player. Now I am confused as to which application is showing the correct brightness/gamma level? Is there a way to make all the applications play the video at same/true brightness/gamma? Any insights would be highly appreciate. Thanks!
    -Pranab

There is a distinction between PCIe-based GPUs and I/O cards that you have to be aware of. COLOR's user interface, render/scopes and output are split between the two. A graphics processor handles the user interface (PCIe is better, application won't run on on-board integrated or AGP), and actual grade values for judgement are based on a PCIe HD-SDI I/O card like AJA Kona3, or Blackmagic (Intensity?) which are NOT graphics cards, they are video interfaces.
For GPUs, if the application is running, that's a good indicator. However, preferred cards have been evolving over the past 5 years. My first system was configured with a Quadro 4500FX which was a total waste of money. I deliberately chose an ATI X1900XT for the next tower, which was a significant improvement. My third MacPro is running fine with the default ATI 2600HD, which is as plain vanilla as you can get. Some users report speed advantages with the newer 4870 series, but I fail to see significant differences -- COLOR in its current delivery will never deliver "real-time" preview playback on any card, and it still takes a very long time to render, in comparison with some other grade offerings. Fourth machine, I'm still deciding, but it would be great if Apple got the FX4000 thing happening, and I'll get to that.
Nvidia does suffer from some bit-depth processing issues in that it does not directly support 10-bit codecs, but can be switched into the more intensive "float" mode. It also has some other transient issues.
Looking outside Apple COLOR, consider that Blackmagic Resolve ("DaVinci") is predicated entirely on nVidia's CUDA-processing technology and is restricted to implementation on 2 or 3 very specific cards, as opposed to the FCP-centred, but ATI/AJA-leaning Apple solution, which, although somewhat restricted, is 90% more likely to run on almost anything PCIe that you can stick into a MacPro. However, the color science and cross-platform (AVID support, for example) that DaVinci offers makes it very tempting, and that's why I'm paying a lot more attention to nVidia these days.
If you are looking for HDSDI PCIe cards, then AJA, with IO, Kona3, and so on definitely has the edge and can extend capabilities up to and beyond 2K processing, but many users select other solutions that suit their individual needs -- not everyone delivers theatrical Digital Cinema or needs to.

  • BCG Brightness Contrast Gamma - Looking for BCG function returning color table / lookup table coded in pure G and applicable to Intensity Graph or Picture Control

Looking for BCG function returning color table / lookup table coded in
pure G and applicable to 8-bit Intensity Graph or Picture Control. Do
not want to use IMAQ Vision is this particular application.  Any
    help is appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Don

Take a look at this color model software I put together.  (Don't concern yourself much with the basic programming at this point.). The color component generator subVI is borrowed from a LabVIEW example.
First look at test_color2.vi.  If you adjust the sliders of the various controls, you will see how it works.  You can see that for pure B&W images, brightness, contrast, and gamma (which I think I have coded correctly) are all fairly straightforward to modify.
Now look at test_color3.vi.  Here we try to adjust BCG for color images using the color model shown here where current color component clusters are carried into the BCG event cases via shift registers.  You can see that once color is introduced into the image, it becomes difficult to mix the colorizing with the BCG model.  And this is pretty much where I am right now.
Would be interested in comments / suggestions.
    Sincerely,
    Don

  • How do I adjust for bright white snow in back of shot?

I recently had to shoot a subject (teller working drive-up window at bank) and my only possible view was out the window in order to capture a customer pulling up. The trouble is that there was a massive snowbank in the background with full sun reflecting right at me. Is there a way that I can tone down that snow and brighten the foreground (teller and customer) in Color? And if so; HOW? Please be VERY specific as I am a newbie to Color. Thanks in advance!!

In a nutshell you have a contrast adjustment to make, and as outlined, trying to drop the overall gain, while pushing "up" the mids is generally what you will have to try to accomplish.
If you don't have a lot of experience with grading, then a complex task is not how you want to start learning the process. Try messing with the 3-way in FCP for starters, for sure. Far and away the biggest annoyance with using COLOR for most new users is simply negotiating the round trip -- then learning the application. Its not an Apple one-button application.
Once you get into using a grading app, the approach that most colorists would use would be to first sort out whether a "Primary" correction would be enough to de-emphasize the objectionable impression of the white background. "Gain" down, "Mids" up... see what effect it has. Perhaps adjusting the Primary In luminance curve will help -- if you have any experience with Photoshop, it has a bit of that approach.
A somewhat more advanced approach would be to use a secondary correction -- isolate the bright area from the rest of the picture with an HSL (luminance only) qualifier, feather out the edge area, and then apply corrections to the qualified "inside" and "outside" areas.
The manual does actually offer some very good advice as to how to go about this, and of course, there are several books available that have been written by colorists outlining these various strategies.

  • Adjust brightness/contrast/geometry in ubuntu or open firmware

    Hi,
I've installed ubuntu in my mac and wiped out mac os 9/x.
But the linux system does not allow me to adjust the brightness/contrast/geometry. I got a CRT display too bright, 1 cm off the center and too small.
Anybody has any clue about adjusting the display settings in linux for a iMac G3 CRT? I tried a lot and searched a lot but don't have any findings, except reinstall a mac os, which I do not want to do. Also, is there anyway to do that in the open firmware command line interface?
    Many thanks for any help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I don't believe there is any depth of linux experience in the iMac forums. I'd advise re-posting in the Ubuntu forums (here).
