Brightness Contrast filter won't stop flickering
My Brightness & Contrast filter is acting crazy. Most of the time, it works fine, but sometimes changes suddenly. Right in the middle of the clip, it will change brightness. Sometimes, it happens in brief flashes, sometimes constant, and other times, it rapidly flickers. This is only happening to certain clips, at complete random. Why is it doing this?
If anybody knows how I can stop this, please help.
Powermac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) using FCP 4.5
Tried trashing renders. still can't figure it out.
It seems to happen on both the external monitor and the clip itself. Tried exporting into new quicktime movies, also as still image sequences and the flicker still happens to these certain clips when the contrast filter is applied. Seems to be embedded in the footage itself, but doesn't happen when there's no filter.

Strange Artifacts with Brightness/Contrast Filter
I've applied the brightness/contrast filter to several stills and then on the last 6 frames, I pump the brightness to 100 to create a flash transition. However, on several of these, I'm getting very strange black artifacts after rendering. They appear on the edges of the frame.
They're not there before rendering, so it's not because that's what the image is supposed to look like at 100 brightness.
Has anyone ever experienced this or have any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks!
CameronInteresting development. I got a different transition from Eureka! plugins that's basically the same as the Buena one except it doesn't crash my system. Rendered it, and lo and behold! Same problem. The same kind of artifacts show up on the edges. The problem with cropping it is that then I just have to re-render and the artifacts come up again.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I'm using the standard Brightness & Contrast filter that comes with FCP but when I do so the video I apply it to has crazy shifts in color and lighting, any help with getting rid of these or at least minimizing them would be much appreciated!
Thanks
KevinThe Brightness and Contrast filter in FCP is worthless, plain worthless and does more damage than good. Same with the Proc Amp filter which along with the B&C filter should be eliminated from the FCP tool kit.
As Mr. X. has rightly stated, use the 3way. Get to know it intimately as it does darn near everything you need to accomplish. -
Can't slice gradient with adjusted bright/contrast filter
I was playing around with gradients, and finally came up with something I wanted to try on my site. I'm taking a shade of yellow (#CC9933), then adjusting the colors with a brightness/contrast filter (brightness -81, contrast -8). But when I try to export a slice of the image, or just copy it to another Fireworks file for export, I am getting the original, bright yellow gradient, not the darker gradient with the adjusted brightness/contrast settings. What am I doing wrong?
I've attached a copy of the image I'm working with. It shows both the image with the adjusted colored gradient I want, and (to the right) how the slices are looking like.
Thanks much to anyone who can helpThank you, Jim. I don't know what I was doing last night. Everytime I tried to export or copy from
the darker image, I'd get the lighter one in Dreamweaver. I just tried it after reading your posting, and it works fine now. I think the lesson for me is, don't work at 3:30 am.
Can you recommend which format (jpeg or png24) I should export as? The darker image, that is. I don't want the lighter one.
Thanks again. -
I don't know if it's a hardware issue, software issue or what. If replacing the screen or other parts would help? Or if the phone is done for? Just really desperate! I don't know what to do! I haven't ever dropped the phone or had any water damage either... Please help!
1. Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new.
In that case, use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694 for causes and solutions
Good luck

when I add the brightness/contrast filter to my footage and adjust it-the picture looks normal, until I render, in which case I get flickering multi-colored frames. I'm editing prores422HQ footage at 23.98fps. The timeline is set to the correct setting, and I've tried different render settings with no luck. Any help would be appreciated...
In support of Jim, (and I don't know what camera you are using when I say this). But pro gear, tends to record in a bigger colour space (higher colour resolution 4.2.2) therefore when adjusting (using FCP filters for example) there's greater latitude to tolerate the adjustments. In my early days of single chip, just a few minor tweaks in brightness contrast can have the image fall off really dramatically, so you do need to get the image right when you record it i.e. even a single chip will record a great image when lit well, but under-lit, it's very difficult to make adjustments using FCP filters.

Brightness/contrast controls have stopped responding
Brightness/contrast controls have stopped responding in IPHOTO
Is there a question? If there is, please bear in mind: before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner. -
Using Photoshop online, when I try to open a file in RAW filter the page opens in bright red and won't allow me to acess the filter. What am I doing wrong?
Photoshoponline has a link you can try which web browser are you using? If may be your browser or that they do not support your camera's raw format. I received an error tht states try layer. You should ask them your question Adobe Photoshop is not the problem its their Web application use their link Pixlr.com Contact Us

Flickering in clips when brightness/contrast adjustments applied
In CS3 I apply brightness and contrast changes to a clip. When I view that clip in the preview monitor, and also when I view that clip after exporting to DVD on a television, there are intermittent random quick changes in the brightness. Screen appears to flicker irregularly. Any ideas as to why this is happening? It does not seem to happen on every clip I make changes on, but it is enough of a problem to be distracting. Thank you.
Dave, your responses are showing up blank. Are you useing email to respond? If so there must be a biug.
Im going to guess at you r problem based on the symptoms. Im guessing you used the Auto Bightness/contrast filter. The auto filter will do this because by dwfault it adjust every frame. Ergo you will see starl adjustments being made frame by frame. The fix is to increase the temporal smoothing parameter; that will cause the auto filter to look fwd and back in time and consider x frames before adjusting. But this will increase render times.
The other solution is to use the manual ver of the filter and not let it auto adjust. -
How do I make a pic in final cut Pro stop flickering?
how do I make a pic in final cut Pro stop flickering?
Question: how do I make a pic in final cut Pro stop flickering?
Answer: It depends on what is causing the flickering. It could be due to the pixel dimensions being too large for the Sequence settings in FCP. It could be due to thin horizontal lines in the image. It could be due to areas of the image in high contrast with each other. Or it could be due to a combination of several factors.
If the image is too large, reduce the pixel dimensions to a more reasonable size.
If it's due to thin horizontal lines, deinterlace the image, or slightly blur the lines in Photoshop.
If it's due to areas of high contrrast, reduce the contrast of those areas in Photoshop.
In FCP you can also try applying the Flicker filter to the image in the Timeline and/or a Gaussian blur filter with a setting of around 0.2 or 0.3

Brightness & Contrast control for SMP
I did raise my suggestion at Google Youtube discussion and wish that you could also provide an option for these controls to be available on 1.0 release, it is easy to implement using filter, useful for those using projector screen where audience could not see the dark themed video clearly could be compensate with brightness/contrast setting.
I mean a widget as creating a new button in the control bar.
For example an engineer might need to create a FastForward widget and add it to the control bar just after the play button. He'll need to configure the widget UI, it's layout and the logic that it should provide.
In in this use case, you might be able to create your brightness control widget. Won't this better then adding this behavior directly to the player code? -
Hey,
while I created a new document, I started to zoom in/out particular areas of the images using the key shortkuts <space>+<cmd> for zooming in and <space>+<cmd>+<alt> for zooming out of an area.
While this works fine in my Photoshop CS5, it troubbles in CS6:
Once I want to zoom out (via <space>+<cmd>+<alt> and a left-mouseclick), the zooming won't stop until it reached the smallest zoom level, instead of zooming out just a step. It however works, while I zoom in (via <space>+<cmd> and a left-mouseclick).
I'm so used to this shortcut since a cupple of versions now (it also works in other programms as well) and it is realy annoying.
It also happens that when I press <space> and another key (e.g. to zoom in/out) that Photoshop CS6 does sometimes not release the hand-tool, that I use to move the canvas via holing <space> and left-mouse down. Pressing <space> again solve this. However, I would exspect the hand-/move-tool only to work while <space> is pressed.
Thanks.

> Do you run into the issue in Photoshop it the case when you use <CMD>+< - > ?
No, works fine. Although its not the best alternative, because my method allows to "specify" the zooming region (due to the mouse position)
> Did you try to reset the zoom tool (Right-click on the magnifier icon on the option bar?)
I did do a reset, but it didn't influence the "bad" behavior.
> Do you have a key repeater function activated in the OS (accessibility?)?
None that I know of. Couldn't find any. But if so, shouldn't it affect the zooming in as well (which isn't the case)?
> If you never use the animated zoom, you can disable it in Photoshop>preferences>general>animated zoom.
I tried both: enabled it causes the mentioned "error" behavior. Disabled the zoom out stops but its remarkably unresponsive: Once I use the key combination and click the left-mouse-btn it takes seconds before the zoom out happes; the process _feels_ quite long.
Best,

How do I save an edited movie with brightness, contrast adjustments
I am using Quicktime pro ver 7.6.4(518.35) and I love its editing features especially the rotation and brightness adjustment features. Is it possible to save a move with these edits so they will be view correct with the basic Quicktime player? I have a movie that I edited the contrast and brightness and resave it as its original MOV file. The new contrast and brightness setting show up when I play the video on the same computer that has my Quicktime pro on it. But, when I play it on another computer with the basic Quicktime player the movie reverts to the original Contrast and brightness. Am I doing something wrong? I even tried to export it to another format and lose the video portion of the movie.
I would hope that I could fully edit a movie save it and give it to my family so they can view it like it was edited. Any suggestions?
Thanks.Ok, after some searching, I found the export filter settings...
However, the exported video appearance does not match that of the source video with similar A/V settings.
Example 1 = Source video (.3g2) with A/V settings, recorded with screen capture software. *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezvE6sUeUb0*
Example 2 = Source video with similar export filter settings (brightness/contrast) *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tQYXWX17zQ*
When the video gets brighter, the brightness dims and when the video gets darker, the brightness increases... contrast settings seemed to be ignored.
All I can say is.. what the HECK?
It's pretty sad when I have to rely on screen capture software to get the desired result! Luckily the source video was taken with a cell phone, so there was no noticeable loss in video quality. -
Difference in video brightness/contrast across viewer applications
I am using FCP->Color>FCP roundtrip to grade Red footage. After I grade the clips in Color and send them back to FCP, I see a difference in brightness/contrast of the graded clips when playing in FCP. And when I export the final output to quicktime and play it in quicktime player, I see further difference in brightness and contrast. Essentially the clips appear darker when played in QT player. Now I am confused as to which application is showing the correct brightness/gamma level? Is there a way to make all the applications play the video at same/true brightness/gamma? Any insights would be highly appreciate. Thanks!
-PranabThere is a distinction between PCIe-based GPUs and I/O cards that you have to be aware of. COLOR's user interface, render/scopes and output are split between the two. A graphics processor handles the user interface (PCIe is better, application won't run on on-board integrated or AGP), and actual grade values for judgement are based on a PCIe HD-SDI I/O card like AJA Kona3, or Blackmagic (Intensity?) which are NOT graphics cards, they are video interfaces.
For GPUs, if the application is running, that's a good indicator. However, preferred cards have been evolving over the past 5 years. My first system was configured with a Quadro 4500FX which was a total waste of money. I deliberately chose an ATI X1900XT for the next tower, which was a significant improvement. My third MacPro is running fine with the default ATI 2600HD, which is as plain vanilla as you can get. Some users report speed advantages with the newer 4870 series, but I fail to see significant differences -- COLOR in its current delivery will never deliver "real-time" preview playback on any card, and it still takes a very long time to render, in comparison with some other grade offerings. Fourth machine, I'm still deciding, but it would be great if Apple got the FX4000 thing happening, and I'll get to that.
Nvidia does suffer from some bit-depth processing issues in that it does not directly support 10-bit codecs, but can be switched into the more intensive "float" mode. It also has some other transient issues.
Looking outside Apple COLOR, consider that Blackmagic Resolve ("DaVinci") is predicated entirely on nVidia's CUDA-processing technology and is restricted to implementation on 2 or 3 very specific cards, as opposed to the FCP-centred, but ATI/AJA-leaning Apple solution, which, although somewhat restricted, is 90% more likely to run on almost anything PCIe that you can stick into a MacPro. However, the color science and cross-platform (AVID support, for example) that DaVinci offers makes it very tempting, and that's why I'm paying a lot more attention to nVidia these days.
If you are looking for HDSDI PCIe cards, then AJA, with IO, Kona3, and so on definitely has the edge and can extend capabilities up to and beyond 2K processing, but many users select other solutions that suit their individual needs -- not everyone delivers theatrical Digital Cinema or needs to.

Brightness/Contrast of an indexed image
Hi all,
Is it possible to change the Brightness/Contrast of an indexed image?
I've tried that with the following code:
// Brighten the image by 30%
float scaleFactor = 1.3f;
RescaleOp op = new RescaleOp(scaleFactor, 0, null);
bufferedIm = op.filter(bufferedIm, null);but it outputs:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Rescaling cannot be performed on an indexed imageThanks in advanceJust roll your own: get the color components of the IndexColorModel, rescale them, build a new
IndexColorModel from that and put that together with the original WriteableRaster to form the
