Brightness control no longer working

On some unremarkable occasion several weeks ago, I was suddenly unable to control my display brightness. When I press the keys, I see the overlay, but it will not adjust. Here's where it gets really strange... If I open the display settings and try to drag the slider myself, it glides right back to its original position, which happens to be uncomfortably bright. Enabling auto brightness does nothing except make it "jump" back to its position instead of slide. I made a short video to give you a better idea.
I figured it was probably something I messed up in the system files. Rebooting, resetting SMC did nothing. I even bit the bullet and did a complete factory reset last night, which I really expected to work. Clean install and it's still happening. I'd understand if the keys just stopped working, or if the bars moved and the display didn't change. I just don't understand how its registering the keypress, showing the brightness overlay, but won't move the bar or change the brightness. I've done a lot of searching and haven't found anyone else with the exact same problem. Any ideas?

The function keys started working again a couple of days later. I know I've restarted the iPad a couple of times to see if the keys would start working again and that didn't work so I have no clue what happened.

  • Voice control no longer works after upgrade to iOS 4

    Everything about iOS 4 has been great so far on my 3Gs, except that voice control no longer works. Holding the home button still brings up the voice control, and the "voice" confirms whatever action I say, but then instead of doing whatever it is supposed to, the phone just goes back to the home screen. Everything in voice control worked fine before I updated to iOS 4, so obviously it is a software issue. Has anyone else having the same issue?

    I'm having the same problems. I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS which I upgraded to iOS 4.0 (previously running 3.1.3).
    I've tried a full restore as well as changing the Voice Control language settings in General > International > Voice Control. I'm English and based in the UK and had my Voice Controls previously set to English (British). The weird thing is if I set my Voice Control to English (American) and then impersonate an American accent - then it works fine! Change it back and it's just the same - takes an age to finish recognising anything and then it's nowhere near what I said.

  • 10.8.4 Screen Brightness Keys No Longer Work

    I ran updates this morning and I assume it updated to 10.8.4 from the app store updates tab.
    After this update and booting back up the screen brightness keys no longer work. F1 and F2 keys do nothing and they worked fine before the update.
    Anyone else experiencing this? If so know a way to fix it?

    I have been having the same issue and even with updates have continued to have the problem. I was able to find a chck box under the keyboard settings that I never noticed before. When checked it only allows you to use the function keys on the top of the keyboard when pressing the fn (function) key. Simply unchecking this (not sure how it got checked in the first place) solved the issue immediately.

  • Brightness control keys stop working after booting MacOSX

    I bought a new iMac 27" a couple of weeks ago, and I installed Windows 7 using bootcamp.
    All the control keys (brightness, volume, etc) works ok on Windows until I reboot it in MacOSX. When i start windows again, brightness controls keys stops working, leaving the screen with the maximus bright, which is killing my eyes.
    Reparing boot camp drivers doesn't do the trick. Am I missing something?

    Try fn + the controls. It might be that Windows defaulted to those buttons as F1, F2, etc. Using fn while pressing the buttons will 'tell' Windows that it has to listen to the Bootcamp software and lower the brightness.

  • Mission Control no longer works

    Just upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and suddenly my Mission Control no longer works when I press the asigned button.  Thinking it was my mouse, I went to the Logitech website and downloaded the latest drivers and updates that are supposed to be compatible with Mountain Lion, but after an hour or so, the side buttons stop working when I try to use them for Mission Control.  Is this a known issue with Mountain Lion?

    I have the Apple MC184LL/A Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard.  The brigtness control works with mine, as do most of the other functions.
    Try cycling the keyboard off and on.  Hold the power button until the green LED goes out.  Then press it one more time to turn it back on.
    You might try resetting the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  Then you may need to reconnect your WiFi and Bluetooth.
    If that doesn't help, try resetting/rebooting the iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart in a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

  • Any ideas on why 4s brightness control won't work (not auto brightness)

    Within the past week or so my brightness control stopped working. Restored OS but that didn't fix it.  I suppose it is just broken but seems an unlikely failure when everthing else still works.
    I've read all the threads on the auto brightness issues and fixes, but this is not that. The brightness slider does nothing with or without auto control on and in a dark room or full daylight.
    Anything else I might try short of replace the phone?
    Not a huge issue except for the fact that the already short battery life is reduced by no longer being able to reduce the brightness.

    If this is just happening on your home wifi, you might want to try unplugging your router for 15 seconds, then pluggint it back in.  Then on your devices, go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.  Note: this will erase passwords for previously joined networks so you'll have to rejoin your wifi again.

    I had a clone with ZCM 10.2.2 which i upgraded to 10.3 and sent it back to my ZENimaging servers.
    What is going on here?? Why does this not work?

  • Satellite C650-I5011 - Brightness control is not working

    I have a Toshiba C650 - I5011 model with Ubuntu 10.3 . I have a problem that even after pressing the Fn + F6 key, the brightness of my LCD does'nt change.
    It remains at maximum.
    I have installed both Toshutils and hotkey daemon. My volume control key (on numeric alternate) works perfectly fine but none of the Function keys work. Pls help.
    Also, I had errors during installation of Ubuntu on my laptop because of which I had to permanently disable ACPI, else it won't boot. Following is the lspci output :

    The backlight detection depends from acpi options selection on your kernel. Which kernel version do you use ?
    $ uname -a
    (Use at least a 2.6.36 kernel since a lot of improvement for recent Toshiba laptop have been done during summer 2010)
    This done, ACPI options beeing compiled into kernel or loaded as module, this line should appear in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log :
    "found backlight control interface /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0"
    Having a C650-15Z, my brightness control works well.

  • [Solved]Brightness control doesn`t work anymore

    I`ve made my 3rd update of Arch since installation, and... where previous two succeeded, the third one failed. It messed up my system
    The problem is, i cannot change brightness any more through my function keys (and since i`m using Openbox as my DE, i cannot change it at all ). The brightness now is so low that i can barely see what i am typing. And it is not only in my Arch, it also messed up Windows and everything else: grub, bootup screen where i can select bios properties - everything.  I ran xev and now i see that FN+Right/Left are not detected anymore as brightness keys. It says:

The problem is that the system is completely unusable at this point, since i barely see anything on the monitor, and that sucks

    I can't see what you did in Arch affecting your windows installation at all.  If you try to boot into windows and increase the brightness (since most laptops store the brightness level of the laptop as it was set, on battery, at least my 2 laptops do), does the new brightness level "stick" for all things?  If so, the only issue you have is to re-map the function keys properly, and to configure a script or something to increase/decrease lcd brightness.  You can make a simple script that echoes a value into your /proc/acpi/video/LCD/brightness file (the file path will vary, so it may be under UVGA or so).  If, however, it doesn't increase again, it may very well be a hardware issue, and not a software (since, as I said above, it's highly unlikely that an Arch update has affected Windows in any way).

  • RP:Lock Control/Unlock Control no longer work as they did in 7.1.

    I need to control access to remote panels programmaticly. In LabVIEW 7.1.1 I was able to pass strings via VIServer to a CaseHandler VI running in the local application space which would issue the Remote Panel Lock and Unlock methods. After converting the CaseHandler to LabVIEW 8.2 these methods no longer work, even if I run the VI directly.
    Are these methods expected to work in 8.2, are there any work arounds?

    Last word I received was that they had told the development team.  I am sure NI will include the fix in the next release, but aside from that, I have no indication that NI will distribute an update.  I do have a tracking number and I attempted to contact the support group today only to find that they were out of the office due to the inclement weather occuring in Austin.  I will try again tomorrow, and the next day ad finitum until I get the issue resolved. 
    My workaround was the same as yours, not clean and entierly unacceptable, especially when considering that the description of these functions in the help docs was written with the desired functionality in mind. It taunts the programmer by describing the functionality that the programmer needs, only to supremely dissapoint the programmer who, after debugging the entire software project, finds that the error lies beyond his grasp! 
    I had to really convince them that this was really not working.  I am surprised that I haven't received word back on the resolution.  I then looked at the status of the service request and someone has marked it as "presumed resolved".  I will update you on the status via this thread.  We WILL get to the bottom of this!  Or, perhaps are we demanding too much of an API?  Programming with the functionality in mind and then expecting that functionality to actually work...

    You seem to have a situation similar to mine.  If I understand correct, your display works perfectly when the brightness buttons work, but when the brightness buttons do not work, your screen dims from, say 100% to maybe 50%, and then back again... all on its own and at random intervals? 
    That's what is happening to me, is that happening to you too?  Just wondering if you found a fix for this since your post.

That is a nice and new feature of Windows 10. Install the Synaptics Touchpad driver software for Windows 8.1. It should work under Windows 10.
