Brightness goes to zero at restart

I'm still having the same issue, despite many updates. My computer resets the brightness to zero when I use a timed startup. I know it's a small issue, but when is Mac going to put out an update that resolved this issue that started when I went to Leopard?

I'm having the same problem, despite the recent 10.5.3 update. For me, too, it happens just when I use a scheduled startup. This is with a G4 iMac, so it doesn't seem to be limited to Intels

    Hi Exdj99,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes, they could be related, but it's hard to say at the moment. Can you get the screen to lighten up? How do you know the brightness goes to zero instead of the screen not turning on? Can you see the outline of the images on the display? When does your computer not respond? Do you try to start it on the battery, power cord, or both?

When ever the power goes out or I restart my iMac the external hard drive that is used for backups by Time Machine is dismounted and all backups are gone. I can reselect it and it will start working again, but I am worried if the iMac hard drive should fail will I be left without a backup ?

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • [SOLVED] Systemd forcing laptop brightness down to zero.

Can somebody please, pretty please, explain to me how I can tell systemd to STOP turning off my laptop brightness half-way during boot?
Started Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of acpi_video0.
Turns brightness down to zero. According to the man page:
[email protected] is a service that restores the display backlight brightness at early-boot and saves it at shutdown. On disk, the backlight brightness is stored in /var/lib/backlight/.
On my Arch it is actually in /var/lib/systemd/backlight/acpi0. I tried modifying the value to anything between 1 and 100 but it the file is reset to 0 every boot, maybe this is normal.
I also tried to disable the damn systemd-backlight service but it re-enables itself every boot too.
Please can somebody help me, I'm pulling my hair out. I have tried various kernel parameters and acpi_backlight=vendor works but forces brightness to 100% and I can't change it. (unless of course if I force /sys/class/... which is not a solution)

It definitely isn't normal for it to keep going to 0. Mine currently has the value 12 in it. (My file is /var/lib/systemd/backlight/acpi_video0.) I'm not sure if it makes a difference that I have laptop-mode-tools managing the backlight, though. But I don't see it go to 0 at any point during boot.
That is, unless something somewhere is configuring it this way, this sounds like a bug and the solution you're using a work around. Not suggesting you shouldn't use it, of course, but maybe worth reporting, too?

Try resetting the SMC and if that doesn't work then reset the PRAM too.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Formula automatically populate the date when inventory goes to "zero"

Hello- I am trying to create a formula that will automatically populate the date when inventory goes to "zero".
    Date: Row 3 Columns P-AB
    Inventory: Rows 5-400 Columns P-AB
Column J rows 5-400 is where I want the inventory run-out date to auto-pop
with so many rows of data, where stock goes to "O" will clearly vary per row. I want this formula, to look between Col. P-AB and tell me in Col. J when my inventory goes to "zero"
    Thank you!

Thank you for your reply...using your formula, I'm still not coming up with inventory run-off date from row 3.
I need Column J to give me the date when my inventory is "0".

  • Mac Mini sound goes to zero on its own.

I have had my mini since 2009. This issue has happened intermittantly since I got it but has happened several times in the last while. The sound output goes to zero. On it's own. I go into system preferences to sound and slide the bar back to my desired level and all is ducky until it happens again. I suppose I should have spoken to Apple about this when Applecare was still in play but it did not happen much. Silly me. Any ideas about the cause? I am guessing this is mobo related and a cure will be costly. If I go that route.

Turn off your memory cleaner, it is worthless to your situation and does NOT clear additional memory for your device, it just wastes battery and resource, and ONLY cleans already deleted memory to a high secure government specification. Nice for the FBI, CIA, drug and p0rn dealers, worthless for you.
    For low memory issues:
First thing? Check the File Free at Options > Status, what is the number at File Free?
Now, leaving the device powered ON, remove the battery of your device, hold a minute, replace and reboot.
What is the File Free now?

  • AirPort Extreme signal goes to zero

My AirPort Extreme base station is about 11 months old. Worked flawlessly for several months, then a few months ago it developed a problem in that the wireless signal strength (as seen by an iBook, two PowerBooks and a PowerMac G4 all using Apple cards) sometimes goes to ZERO. No bars, and the network disappears from the menu on all the clients, even the one sitting 10 feet away. Visually, only the center light is on, steady white. The problem is corrected by unplugging/replugging the power cord on the base station.
This sometimes occurs 2-3 times a day, sometimes it does not occur for several days in a row. It has happened in the middle of the day with all users active and it has happened at night with no one active (noticed when the first user tried to connect next morning). The problem may have started with a new level of AirPort software or firmware (we are running the latest available of both, with 3 clients on 10.4.8 and one on 10.3.9) but since the problem is sporadic we didn't associate it with any patch at the time.
The base station is running infrastructure mode, bridging to a wired Ethernet network, so it is not acting as DHCP server. (The wired network clients see no disruption in service when the AirPort goes dead.) 128-bit WEP and access control by MAC address are active.
    Any ideas?
    PowerMac G4 MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hmmm, unfortunately, it sounds like the AirPort Extreme card inside your AEBS maybe faulty. Since you already know connecting wired clients to the AEBS is not an issue, would it be possible to remove the AEBS from the current network configuration, and install it as a new standalone wireless network...and then check to see if repeats the drop-outs when wireless clients connect to it? The rationale would be to eliminate any possibility that when it's connected to a wired network may be the cause of the wireless drop-outs.
