Brightness inconsistent on certain TVs

I've finished color correcting a short film I shot and am having a problem. Three of the scenes are somewhat dark. After getting the levels where I want them, it looks dark on my cinema display and lighter on my external monitor. Now when I put it onto a dvd and watch it back on different TVs, it either looks like it did on the external monitor or... now here's the problem... it is so dark that you can barely see anything. It's especially bad on wide, flatscreen TVs, although a normal 27" tube TV played it dark too.
When I was originally correcting it, I noticed it was really dark on my cinema display. I thought maybe if I correct the brightness levels so that it looks OK on the display, it would help. It didn't.
I'm a complete amatuer at this stuff. I figure if it's too dark on someone's TV, they'll have to increase the brightness on it. I was just wondering if maybe there is some kind of "pro secret" that would keep the brightness levels somewhat consistent on different TVs. I hate that people will have to stop the movie to adjust the brightness on thier TV.
Thanks

I was taught this. I don't know about books or sites
for this skill. Always something that was taught in
a broadcast work environment. If there is, they

Sounds like the jedi mind tricks... or some kind of ninja apprentiship.
A person has to get their hands into it to learn it, and so much of the professional vectorscope & waveforms deal with engineering and science and math and physics and electricity... etc... I'm sure it would be hard to try and fit all that into a book.
I also wonder how much of that is going out? Once everything goes digital, there won't be much of a need for vectorscopes & waveforms to calibrate equipment. All monitors, TV sets, etc, will have the same color/brightness. What is red here is red there.
At the same time, we do all have computer monitors, hmm... but most of them are still VGA and in the analog world, even digital monitors will differ from each other.
Color is such a mysterious thing, maybe we'll never get a standard on it. But calibration that used to be done by vectorscopes and waveforms are now being done by Spyder & Eye-One's. I think that's the direction it will all go for calibration.
We don't have to calibrate video going out to DVD's, and once all TV's are digital, maybe that's when vectorscopes & waveforms will be obsolete.
'nuff said.

My 2009 iMac is making a very loud noise. It sounds like a rapid, pulsating electronic noise. It stops when the screen brightness is adjusted or when using certain apps. But it always returns and is getting louder. The unit was shut down for 4 months and the house temperature was set to 5C. It was powered up 2 weeks ago and ran fine for a while. Then in the last 5 or 6 days the problem started. 5 days ago I did watch a bike race for 3 or 4 hours from a quasi legal stream. I am not tech savvy. Just very confused as I've had a trouble free run so far. Ditto with my iphone5.

I would recommend taking it in immediately to your local Apple Store or AASP to be loooked at by an Apple Genius. I suspect you made a goof somewhere but diagnosing noises without seeing it is really difficult.

• Brightness jumps to full when doing full screen application

When I have my brightness at a certain setting and then start playing a game, the brightness jumps to full. When I then press the button for less brightness, it jumps immediately to the setting it was originally.
This also happens whenever I do alt+tab to return to the desktop. So it appears it happens when I do something that requires to switch to full screen mode cause it also happens with other programs.
At normal use, surfing, office,... this problem does not occur
Any solution, cause it's really annoying

Anyone?

• Bright White Pixels on Screen / Apple Replacement

Thought this might be useful to others. Bought a new MacPro 13" fully maxed out about 6 months ago. My second Apple, first one is a PowerBook that is 7 years old and still kicking. Anyway, I noticed in the bottom left hand corner, about 6-7 pixels (size of a pea) would turn bright white on certain white web pages. Sort of anoyed me and who knows if it would get worse. Knowing how expensive Apple products are to fix and the fact that is was still under warranty I brought to my Apple store in Philadelphia, PA.
Tech took one look at it and said they would relace the screen. According this forum, others have had same issue, was a defective screen sourced from, I think Samsung.
3 hours later, Tech calls me and says, "while we had you computer open, we noticed you also have a defective motherboard and memory!" Wow, am I glad I brought this baby in because I was on the fence about it. He said Apple would replace the entire computer with a brand new one, swapped out my 500GB hard drive for me and gave me a new 1 year warranty.
I was also on the fence about buying the Apple Care extended warranty, but now I plan on buying it in 11 or so months. At least I am glad that Apple stand behind their products, as they should for the price we pay. Hope this helps others.

I had the same thing, a macbook pro bought in may 2010. I noticed a bright spot on the screen two weeks ago, really only visible when a light background behind the spot. I took it in and they said, yah we will replace the screen.
I called a week later, having been told that the replacement screen was in stock and that it would be done in a few days, figuring it must be done and they haven't called. They wouldn't give me any information over the phone except that a part that was defective needed to be ordered... I had to go into the store for them to tell me that they found that the logic board was defective as the problem was not fixed by replacing the screen. Oh and by the way the mic cable was messed up so that needed to be replaced too...
Needless to say, I am frustrated because they won't have the new logic board for a week or more, and did not bother to call me and let me know that they were making more (unauthorized by me) repairs, and I am out from my computer for more time.
Reading your post, I am wondering why they didn't just switch out the hard drive and give me a new computer as they are replacing the guts of it anyways and mine looks brand new - it never leaves my desk or its furry incase!
Not to mention, now I will have new parts with no new warranty and what is to say that these things won't be defective and manifest themselves in another seven months when it is beyond its original 1 year warranty.
What is the defect in the logic board that causes a bright spot on the screen????? and why did no one bother to call me to authorize all of this! It looks like this is actually a known common problem, so why does apple not extend the warranty on the parts they are replacing to cover them for their first year knowing they very well might fail again?!
I love my computer and paid the big bucks to make the switch to apple, I guess I expect more from the customer service and the tech end of the company...

• Does the Apple TV work only on specific types of TV's?

We are thinking of buying a new TV, because our current one has 3 random huge red lines going vertically through it. Anyway, I was looking at TVs just a minute ago, and I remembered the Apple TV. Well, there's something called a "Smart TV" which means it can use the internet for Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, AccuWeather, etc. Anyway, I was looking at the Apple TV.
1) Does the Apple TV only work with like a certain size, company, type (ie HDTV, LTE or whatever, Plasma, etc), etc.?
2) Does the Apple TV basically make a normal TV a smart tv? Does it allow internet and all that easily? Also, when watching movies on the Apple TV thing, will it play full screen? Will this only happen on certain TVs?
Thanks!

No not any more then Xbox or playstations does

• IPhone 6 Common Defects?

Hello, last week I bought the iPhone 6 128GB Space Gray. Since then I have been through 3 of them, soon to be 4. Are defects common among these devices? I bought it directly from the Verizon store. Here's the kind of defects I mean.
#1- Dark corner, dead pixel and bright spot in the middle of screen.
#2- Bright spot, faulty antenna
#3 Serial number F17 - Loose screen on the upper left, and the bottom right pops out of the frame sometimes. Screen is also extremely uneven in tinting. Top right is pink, bottom right is blue, bottom left is yellow, and top left is green. Extremely annoying. Also had a scratched mute switch out of box.
I'm hoping the new one doesn't have these issues, but are these common? I'm paying 850$ for a device and I refuse to settle for sub par quality screens. This actually made me want to try replacing my iPad again. Has that nasty pink to green tinting, stuck pixels, and severe image retention. Apple told me there was "nothing wrong with it" last time, but I refuse to settle. We pay a lot of money for Apples "superior" quality and service. I feel like I'm getting ripped off at this rate.

These answers are ridiculous.  He is requesting help.  He wants to know if its worth replacing or if this is just the new standard of Apple screens.  I have had my iPhone 6 replaced 4 times for screen issues like these and they do appear to be very common.  Some people don't notice the defects and others replace their phone until it's tolerable.  Every phone I inspected at my Apple store had some degree of color uniformity or shadowing issues.  My current phone has a shadow at the top right but it's the best one I've had so far and I don't think there are going to correct it with a new batch until after the holidays or with the iPhone 6s/7.  I've seen posts related to screen issues with the new iPads, Macs, previous gen iPhones, etc.  It happens every year and many refer to it as "Playing the screen lottery".  I'd call that pretty common.  So in short... YES it is pretty common especially with LCDs and especially with Apple LCDs to have some color or brightness inconsistency.
He's been given accurate answers.  The iPhone 6 does not have any 'common' defects.  You've had a handful of iPhone 6 units (5, it seems?), and 4 of them have had issues.  I've worked with about 25+ iPhone 6 units, and none of them have had any such issues, and I've worked with over 200 other iPhones (most 5 or higher), and none have had any 'common defects'.  Only one of the iPhone 5 units was part of the battery replacement program.
If you've seen reports of defects on this forum, I'm not surprised.  This is where people come to get user-to-user technical advice about their iPhones.  In other words, it's like going to a hospital (where sick people go), seeing a lot of sick people, and then assuming that everyone in the city is sick.  You're basing your perception on a limited sample, and that limited sample is gather from an area where you expect to see people reporting issues.
Tell me, how many of the millions of iPhone 6 units that have been sold have this issue?  If you can't tell me that number, then you have no valid data to say that it's a 'common defect'.
So in short, you're wrong, because you're basing your opinion on limited and exclusive data, not on a wide enough sample to be valid.
And it's interesting that you're pulling up a two month old thread just to go on a rant.  That's what is truly ridiculous.

• Is the iPad mini (version 2012) a decent ereader

I've read some reviews stating that the iPad mini doesn't do well reading outside in sunlight. I'm moving up from a Kindle Keyboard which gave great results in sunlight to an iPad mini (2012 non-retinal). Any comments from iPad mini users? Also, the Kindle was not lighted so I had to purchase a lighted cover to read at night. Hopefully the mini has enough of a lighted screen to make night-reading easy.

Night time reading will be easy, just like looking at a laptop screen in the dark.
Reading in direct sunlight will be less easy. You'll most likely have to take some steps to avoid reflected glare, because in very bright conditions, at certain angles the iPad screen can look almost like a mirror.

• No audio from Apple TV

i installed today my apple TV, but there is No sound getting out from TV!

Hi M.zaferani,
The article below may be able to help you with this issue.
Click on the link below to see more details and screenshots.
I've quoted some helpful highlights for you:
Apple TV (2nd generation): No audio when using Apple TV
Symptoms
Apple TV (2nd generation) automatically sets the audio output mode for use with your TV or AV receiver. In some cases, however, certain TVs or AV receivers may not properly play audio from your Apple TV.
Resolution
If there is no audio coming from your TV or AV receiver when using your Apple TV, including sound effects, you should first confirm the following:
The volume on your TV, or AV receiver (whichever is used for audio from Apple TV), is not muted, and is at a high enough volume.
The Sound Effects option, under the Audio & Video menu on your Apple TV, is not set to Off. To verify:
On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Audio & Video.
Navigate to the Sound Effects option and make sure its set to On
If there is still no audio when using your Apple TV, try changing the Audio Output from your Apple TV:
Make sure you have the latest Apple TV software update installed.
On your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > Audio & Video.
Navigate to the Audio Output option.
Push the Select button on your Apple Remote to switch to 16 bit.
Verify that audio is now coming from your TV or AV receiver.
I hope this information helps ....
Have a great day!

• IChat Video Quality vs. Bandwidth FAQ?

I have done some searching and have come across some video quality threads.
Most of my Video Conferencing is done between my Macbook or iMac 24 across Time Warner cable to another iMac 20. All running OSX 10.4.9.
It appears that the video quality will vary based on the upstream bandwidth availability. In my case I have 600-700kbps pretty consistently. This is pretty decent for a 1 person video conference. Not quite up to the standard I was hoping for but usable.
What is not even usable is doing a multi-person Video conference. In this case two local machines on the same wireless network and one machine across Time Warner cable (we use the same provider). When I bring the second local machine, the conference splits out properly but the video in each widow (other than my preview) is so blurry that it is completely useless.
I would be very curious as to the experience of others attempting to connect across the same service providers network. In this case we are connecting across Time Warner between Florida and Ohio. The performance should be rocking with at least 1MB upstream (I will have to check but I think I have 5MB up).
The other thing that I was wondering is if there is some way to tweak the iChat Video settings to force it into a specific video quality mode (and possible deal with some dropouts).
Sorry for the long post but I am hoping we can begin to compile information on bandwidth requirements and perfomance experienced with various service providers.
Thanks!
Jim

Thanks, I did both tweaks and the really improved the 3 way conference.
My speedtest is below and is on Bright House in Tampa. Note that the best that I achieve watching Connection doctor is in the 700 territors. I do tend to be able to deliver 20fps pretty consistently. But my bandwidth bounces around a lot. I am not a big fan of cable for quality and consistency.

Verizon FIOS is moving into my area and I believe they will offer much better speed than Bright House and certainly more consistency. RF is simply a nightmare to maintain.

• A media for an HD wedding file H264 .mp4

Hi guys,
Maybe I'm a little dummy but....
I have a 4,90Gb Mp4 (h264) HD file.
Is the result of a 27min wedding video project.
And now?
How to let bride and groom see their wedding on their own HDTV?
I bought a 8 Gb pen drive to put it on but of course....a single 4,90Gb file....file is bigger than pen drive system file...(Fat32)
Do I have to format the pen drive with NTFS bein sure it will be ok with an HDTV?
Do I have to cut in pieces the file and put  pippo01.mp4 - pippo02.mp4 - pippo03.mp4 etc on the fat32 pen drive?
What's the way to give friend or customer a file to be seen on their HDTV?
Thanks for any advice

NTFS will be fine. Yes certain TVs will have no problem with NTFS (the Samsung ones I have used), others will have issues (PS3). You will find most production companies will upload their edits and even sometimes rushes to Vimeo for clients to look at. That is certainly not unheard of and is very common practice. You could provide a USB pen and burn it to a DVD for compatibility sake. Obviously it would then be DVD MPEG 2 PAL DV, not HD H.264, but it's better than nothing.

How to preserve battery life ~ used to last all day, now it runs out by lunchtime

I would advise updating to iOS 7. It might improve your battery and the bugs are worked out by now.
If not wanting to update because of the new look, here are some tips:
-Turn off bluetooth when not needed.
-Connect to wifi and turn off cellular data when possible.
-When not around wifi, turn wifi off.
-Keep your screen at around 50% brightness.
-Disbale certain apps or features in Settings<Privacy<Location Services if they are not necessary.
-Close out of apps in the multitasking bar.
-Enable airplane mode when you plan on not using your phone for a while.
Hopefully these tips help you. If your battery does eventually get too bad, you can get it changed out by apple. If youve had your device for under a year, you can take it into an Apple store and theyll give you a new phone in return. Have a good night and good luck!

• Appearance of images changes when moving from ACR to PSE11 Editor .. why?

I run Windows 8.1 x64 bit on my new PC and use PSE11 which opens raw files automatically into ACR.  Once I've finished editing an image in ACR I then click on 'Open Image' which transfers the part edited file to the PSE11 Editor.  Once there I perform a few additional tweaks before cropping, sharpening and saving as a jpeg.
At about the same time as I installed PSE11 onto my new PC I became acutely aware of a change in the appearance of my images as they transferred from ACR to PSE11 Editor.  Having performed the basic adjustments in ACR and things are to my liking, the image now opens in PSE11 Editor looking rather washed out by comparison .. less contrast, maybe a little more brightness and a certain degree of reduced colour saturation.
Obviously all images are seen on the same monitor, so any fingers pointing at calibration issues don't count in this instance!  I just need to know if there is a fix that will return me to the situation I've always had before, where the part edited ACR image looks the same when it opens in the PSE11 Editor.  I have been using PSE in various versions for a number of years and this is the first time that I've experienced this irritating problem.
Help, please!

Thanks for your reply Michel ...
The colour setting in both Editor and Organiser is: 'Always Optimise Colours for Computer Screens'
I believe this option will select the sRGB colour space by default and that the option 'Always Optimise for Printing' will default the colour space setting to Adobe RGB.  Is this so?  I only print occasionally (most of my viewing is on the monitor or the TV) but it would be nice to know if the chosen colour space chosen produce this odd effect I'm experiencing (although I sincerely doubt that it's got anything to do with it).
This option will be used by the ACR conversion module to set the colour space of the file imported in the editor. So, you are right, the sRGB colour space is a good choice for you. What's good is that the raw file itself has NO colour space. If you have edited a raw file for sRGB, good. But you can set your editor to 'optimize for print', and you'll get an aRGB version for printing. Worth a try if you have a good printer (mine is an all-in-one with 6 inks and I can see the difference for some subjects).
My camera (EOS 5D MkIII) is always set to sRGB.  Is this significant?
No for raw files. That's used only for the in-camera conversion to jpeg. It's a simple tag which is ignored in the ACR conversion process (see above).
The main issue though remains, namely the fact that part edited images look washed out in PSE Editor in spite of looking just fine in ACR a split second earlier, so I'm still looking for a remedy.
Such a difference is often noted when a file with aRGB colour space is seen in a software that believes it's sRGB. Nothing in your worklows seems to explain that.
Do you see a difference when you see the same edited picture in a non colour-managed software? I can't help you more for the moment.

I changed mine to 16 (the max I could see) and I can now get 80 tracks again. Perhaps automatic sets it to half the cores available leaving the rest for other tasks.
What is noticeable though is the way it spreads the load is inconsistent and certainly not optimal. A few times it took 2 or 3 restarts to play high track counts and some of the restarts fully loaded the first 8 or 9 cores with nothing on the rest and it overloaded.
So seems back to where I was which is great but the loading algorithm certainly does not look optimal or very quick at the moment, maybe for the future updates.
At least the progress was fast and in a very nice way, giving control to the users. I like "pro apps" that let us choose!

• Theres something really wrong with Clean Up Diagram

There appears to be some significant problems with the Clean Up Diagram algorithm. It seems that far too much space is padded next to cluster unbundle by name and structure objects. It is really frustrating that some things appear miles apart and others are far too close. I have done a very good job of factoring this application into VIs but the inconsistency around certain objects makes it look terrible.

It does a great job on horrible diagrams (it lifts them from very low score), but makes any of my own diagrams worse (they go from the 99 percentile down to 70). Don't expect miracles.
