Brightness issue (when unplugging/plugging battery cable)

Hi,
on my laptop, when unplugging the battery cable, the screen becomes darker.
When plugging it back, the screen becomes brighter, but not as bright as from start.
To restore my previous brightness, I need to use xbacklight (or xrandr --brightness).
Even, xbacklight -get is enough to restore the correct brightness.
I don't have any of cpufrequtils, pm-utils, powernowd, laptop-mode-tools or any package to manage the power.
My video driver is intel (i915).
Do you have any idea of: what's causing the screen to change brightness when plugging/unplugging the battery ?
Why, after plugging the battery back, it doesn't restore its previous brightness until I try to get the brightness from the os ?

Hi, if you don't use any of the acpid, pm-utils, laptop-mode-tools, etc. "magic", it seems to be a BIOS feature. You may try to disable it via setup, or try to find a kernel module specific to your NB manufacturer/model (eg. dell-laptop) to override the ACPI BIOS.

Remove any lint/debris from the lightning port.
    Use an official Apple cable.
Connect it to a wall outlets, some USB ports do not output sufficient power.
If none of the above resolves, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

  • 10.6.8 update: screen brightness issues when hooked to external monitor

I just upgraded to MacOS 10.6.8 yesterday, and since then, the screen on my Macbook is acting strange.
I'm hooked up to an external monitor which I use almost all the time as the primary monitor.  Usually, when I'm using the external, I turn the brightness all the way down (to black) on the Macbook.  After the update, however, the Macbook seems to have a mind of its own.  The screen gets brighter, then dimmer, then brighter again, without reason.  Or, othertimes, after about 30 seconds of inactivity, the Macbook screen gets brighter, then when you move the mouse, it goes back to black again.
It's not that I care so much, but just wish I knew what was going on.  Glitch in the new software?
    Macbook
    MacOS 10.6.8
    External monitor: ViewSonic VA2231wm

Same problem here with a MacBook Pro. I have the notebook connected to a Cinema Display and thus manually dimmed down completely my MacBook Screen. Now after updating to 10.6.8 my MacBook screen dimms up at the time when it would normally dimm it down if the screen was "enabled".
I tried several steps to fix that:
    - Dis- and reconnected my external Cinema Display.
    - Changed display and energy safer settings in system preferences.
    - Fixed file permissions.
    - Did a PRAM-reset.
    Nothing helped.

  • My battery meter is not showing up. Also when I plug my cable into charge the computer sparks are being discharged from the connection at the computer. What is going on?

No battery meter is showing up on display and sparks are discharged when computer is first plugged in. What is going on?

    Hello Toniamato,
It sounds like your phone is not charging or charging very slowly. I would use these troubleshooting steps from the following article:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

  • HT1420 How do I get my iphone 4s to load everything onto itunes to do a master reset when it will not allow me to charge it when it is turned on.  When I plug the cable into the usb on the computer and the phone at the same time nothing happens.

My phone will not back itself up to icloud because it takes too long and the battery dies before it can complete it .  Its been months since it backed itself up and I cant get it to charge when it is plugged in and connected to wifi.  I do not want to loose my pictures.  This is sooooooo frustrating .

I hope you know what is modding in general? Same goes for bios. Meaning editing the bios image and unlock the hidden options a andcthen flashing the bios. This method voids warranty so it isn't recommended. Though you can have a look here

  • T42 dies when unplugged yet battery is good, power mgr shows charge/discharge cycle OK

    Ok weird problem -
I have a T42 with a "real" IBM battery running XP and latest version of power manager s/w  V1.85 .
I can run the battery maint.  test cycle and the T42 successfuly (or so it claims) runs the battery down and then charges it back up and reports that it is in good condition.
But when I unplug the 120V charger the laptop immediately shuts off, and will not run from battery. The contacts on the battery and in the laptop seem to be in fine shape.  I have tried another battery that works fine in a different T42 but I still have the same problem.
When problem started the BIOS/controller code were downlevel, but I have now updated to the latest:
       BIOS  - V3.23
       Embedded controller code V3.04
Then reset BIOS to default settings
    But ... problem remains.
    Thanks for any assistance!

No they did not ... although that might have been why it was donated....
We are cramped for space so can still put it to good use, but it would have been nice to be able to actually be portable ... I feared there was no simple answer, replacing the motherboard is more work than I can put into it at the moment. I'll add wireless and we'll leave it "teathered' to a desk ...
    Thanks for your help!

  • [KT4V] speaker biiips when I plug power cable

    Hi,
My mother board has a strange problem for some months.
Each time I disconnect and reconnect the power cable, I hear the system speaker doing a very long biiip (about 30sec - 1minut). And during that, I can't start my computer.
It's very strange and annoying. I don't know where this problem comes from. Before that, it worked perfectly!

    - While charging try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next try restoring the iPod via iTunes.  First from backup and if still problem restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
    - However, I really think that the iPod has a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.  If defective Apple should give you a refurbished iPod.

  • 7th gen Nano only works when plugged in, turns off when  unplugged... battery is fully charged.

7th gen Nano only works when plugged into computer, as soon as I unplug it shuts off (it was ejected from iTunes). Battery is fully charged.  Have already done a restore in iTunes and checked for updated software.

    Hello there, DizDude.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some good recommendations for troubleshooting battery issues with the 7th generation iPod Nano:
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4433
    Particularly this section:
    Battery life appears short
Learn how to conserve battery life.
Ensure that the latest software is installed on the iPod.
When charging, use the cable that came with iPod nano (7th generation) and leave the device connected until it is fully charged.
Note: If you are charging using your computer, don't connect iPod nano (7th generation) to your keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod nano (7th generation) is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod nano (7th generation) battery may drain.
When you are done using the iPod nano, verify that:
The Radio application is off (tap the button)
Music is paused (tap the button in the iPod application or disconnect the earphones)
There is no active Pedometer session (tap the Stop button in the Fitness application)
Dimming the screen is another way to extend battery life on iPod nano. Go to Settings > General > Brightness and restore the brightness to the default, or drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness.
Playing tracks with EQ requires your iPod processor to consume more energy than playing tracks without EQ, because the EQ information is not encoded in the song. To prolong battery life, turn EQ off if you don't use it. Go to Settings > Music > EQ and select Off from the list. Note, however, that if you've added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you'll need to set EQ to Flat to have the effect of Off, because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.
Try restoring iPod nano (7th generation) by connecting it to iTunes and clicking Restore.
    Test the battery life.
    Issue not resolved
If the issue is still not resolved, please read this information on servicing your iPod.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Why is my 4th generation ipod touch not charge? I plug it into the computer and the wall and with 2 different usb cables and its not charging. When its plugged in it shows the icon for charging but the battery never increases and it dies once i disconnect

I have a 4th generation Ipod Touch. It has been working for months when yesterday the battery started acting werid. I was driving and it was connected with the usb charger cable to my car stereo when all the sudden my music stopped and the stereo could not recognize my ipod at all. When I got back home, I tried to charge it so it wouldnt die but even while on the charger in the wall the battery continued to die. I charged it over night (the first time I have ever charged it over night) desperately to have battery for a 4 o clock plane flight so I would have entertianment. The ipod died over night while on the charger. When I unplugged it from the usb charging cable I noticed that the icon telling me the ipod needed to be charged came up. So I plugged it back in. The charging thunder bolt symbol popped up next to the very small red strip on the left side of the battery indicating that the ipod had no charge to turn its self on. I tried plugging it in on the computer, the wall ac charger and a stereo system made just for the ipod that also pluggs into the wall. I have used 2 different cables, the result being the same that the ipod held no charge, and it wouldnt charge at all while on the charger, and it would imediately die once i take it off the charger.
I have not idea what has happened ....
    Please help
    THanks!

My iphone 4S only start whit cable plug in and then show battery very low (with red line end) then try to turn on but show searching in operator name command and not connecting and no work properly and when I plug out it turn off!!! what should I do?

I'm afraid you'll have to get the phone serviced, dropping the phone must have damaged additional parts inside the phone.
But Apple will not service the phone anymore, opening the phone and replacing the battery should only be done by authorized personal, not by users.
You'll have to look for a 3rd party repair shop and see if they can fix this, sorry.

  • My iphone will show 1% and then 0 and go off.  I can't turn it off again because it shows the battery is dead.  When I plug in the charger for 5 or 10 seconds,  it might show 40% battery.  When I unplug it,  I have 40%!!  Why does it go dead for no reason

My iphone 5 battery life at the most inconvenient times drains down till the phone turns off.  When I plug in the charger for just 5 or 10 seconds,  it will often show 35 - 45% left!  I unplug the charger immediately and I have 45% battery life!  That means I always have to have a charger with me in case it quits!  I can't always do that.

The % counter isn't always accurate.
I'd reset the phone, which might help make it more accurate. (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears).
You might also try restoring the phone from a backup.

  • Zen Micro Freezes when I plug in USB cable+USB not recognized at ti

Ok, I know you, the reader, has heard this complaint posted over and over on the Creative forums, and you would probably tell me to SEARCH THE FORUMS. Well, I did, and I found no answer or solution to my problems. So..here goes nothing.
I recently purchased a Black 5gb Creative Zen Micro, I was really content and happy with it...that is until I plugged it into my USB 2.0 Card. The moment I do that (I've tried plugging it in into every USB 2.0 slot, and NO, this isn't a hub, but a PCI card), The Zen Micro freezes! I have to resolve this by removing the cover and taking out the battery, then reinserting the battery. At the same time my Zen Micro freezes, a little bubble pops up on my computer screen saying "USB Device Not Recognized". I'm going absolutely out of my mind here, and am on the verge of returning the Zen Micro, and might get a replacement, and if that doesn't work, just returning the Zen altogether for a refund and getting a Rio Carbon. I really like the Zen, so PLEASE PLEASE help me out here!
Things I've Tried That Did Not Work:
-Uninstall/Reinstalling Zen Explorer, Mediasource (basically everything on CD)
-Updating the drivers for Zen Micro found on Nomadness.net
    -Updating Firmware for Zen Micro
-Going into rescue mode and cleaning up, Formatting, reloading firmware, and rebooting.
-Trying the USB 2.0 Card in different PCI Slots
-Rotating the order in which I connect the USB cable to Zen Micro and PC
-Uninstalling/Reinstalling the drivers, even when the Zen Micro pops up as "Unknown Device"
    -Reading tips/hints on Nomadness.net
I have scoured the forums, and have not found anything useful or new. I know its not the USB 2.0 Card's problem, since I plugged in my USB mouse into all the ports on the USB Card, and it worked fine.
Note: When I plug the USB cable that came with the Zen Micro into the integrated USB slots on the motherboard (USB .), it at times, does work, but even then, not a high chance of it happening. Even if I do successfully connect the Zen to a USB . slot without it freezing up, the Zen ends up not being detected by any program, like Window Media Player, Mediasource, or Creative Zen Micro Explorer.
I am going out this weekend and am gonna try to buy a new USB Cable, and if that doesn't work, returning the cable, and returning the Zen Micro to be replaced. AND IF THAT DOES NOT WORK...GOODBYE CREATIVE! HELLO RIO! But please, any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. I will also try to contact Creative Customer Support, but I doubt they'll tell me anything new, if I could even connect to them without being put on hold.
    System Specs:
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    Creative Zen Micro Firmware .02.05
    USB 2.0

Yep, that's exactly my issues to.....no matter what I've done, including replacing the USB 2.0 card which WAS and Adaptec DuoConnect 2.0 card which works fine with every other USB device ever connected to it, the Zen Micro 6g is NOT recognized by Creative Media Source or WMP. It is only recognized by the PC in Device Manager, and it has a yellow marker on it, which tells me the drivers are not installed. I know I don't need the drivers installed, but even after installing them, it tells me the drivers are not installed.
However, the answer is: it's definitely not the Micro, since it works flawlessly on my other PC and on my Toshiba notebook. So, it's some compatibility issue on that one PC. Since I refuse to let things be, I am reformatting that PC, reinstalling from scratch with WinXP and sp2. This PC has WinXP Pro but it has other issues so a reformat is in order anyway. Hopefully, this will resolve the issues. If not, then I say it's incompatibility with the Intel 865Perl m.b. But I'm at a loss as to why it won't work when plugged into the Adaptec card too.
