Brightness keys not working

HI friends,
I recently bought this laptop online and everything works just fine apart from the brightness keys which are not working, it is very difficult to work under the high brightness condition.Please suggest.

The only suggestion I can offer would be for you to install the supported operating system of W8.1 64 bit.

Volume and brightness keys not working with new keyboard on imac

I just purchased a new wired keyboard for imac and brightness and volume control keys not working . i have tried adjusting keyboard settings. I have software version 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade software. Thank you for any help.

Do you have "Automatically Adjust Brightness" check box ticked in System Preferences > Displays > Display ? If so, you can't manually adjust brightness.

Brightness keys not working anymore and screen frequently flashing black and staying black!

I had my macbook pro in for repair twice last month. They replaced the logic board and had to take the screen off and look at it due to there being a potential crack. Now, when i got the macbook back the first time, after replacing the logic board, everything was fine, the brightness keys did not work at first but a restart fixed the problem. 5 days later i had it back in so they could look at the screen because i thought there was a crack on it, which turned out just to be some debris on the inside! Still had to pay a 50 quid inspection charge!
ever since the macbook has returned from this the brightness keys have had a delayed response in that, when i increase or decrease the brightness it took about 10 seconds for the screen to actually change. This happened everytime.
A few days ago for no reason, the screen started to occasianally flash black. It wasnt a problem at first, but sometimes it flashes back and stays black so i have to restart my computer. Sometimes when returning from sleep it stays black as well. On top of this, the brightness keys have completely stopped working all together now.
My laptop is not in warrenty anymore, it ran out after i got it back the second time. I was too busy with work and i needed to use the laptop so i couldnt really sort anything out.
Is there any policy saying that if the laptop comes back from repair and has new problems not caused by the customer, but by the repairer, then they will fix it free of charge?

Wireless Keyboard Brightness Keys Not Working

Since an update a while back the brightness adjustment keys for screen brightness on my apple keyboard have stopped working. These are the F1 and F2 keys normally.
On my Macbook Pro keyboard they work fine but the wireless keyboard keys do not.
Anyone having the same issue or know a fix?

I had the same problem, minor but annoying. I found the cause, It is a combination of factors. If the following are true:
• You're using a laptop
• You are running 10.6.x (not sure which revision, true of 10.6.6)
• You have an external display connected
• The external display is non-Apple, or you don't have a USB connection to an Apple display
• You are using an Apple Wireless bluetooth keyboard
• You have the menu bar *on the external display*
Then the brightness keys won't adjust the brightness of the laptop's display.
The apparent logic is that if your main (menu bar) display is external, and you're using an external keyboard, then you must want the brightness keys to control the external display. The bug in the logic is that it doesn't check to see if the external display is capable of brightness control. So, it appears that the brightness keys don't work at all. Note that Max OS X can only adjust the brightness of an internal display or an external Apple display with a USB connection.

Yoga 2 13 brightness keys not working - it was TeamViewer monitor driver

Hello, I have two Yoga 2 13's - I think both the 59403750 model. Both have the same specs.
In one of those Yogas the brightness keys - "F11" and "F12" - do not work and it is full 100% brighness all the time. In the other (good) Yoga they seem to work OK - at least I can get the brighness down a few notches.
When I press and hold the Fn key to get F11 or F12 to work the *seem* to do what F11 or F12 would do normally - e.g. in a word processor or browser. So it seems maybe just the brighness function of those keys are not working.
Lenovo has calimed that this is not a hardware problem and they are not responsibile for it under warranty.
I have done a little reading some time ago and seen something similar that was maybe fixed by installing updated video drivers. Well, that did not work - as of a couple months ago. At the time I also updated the BIOS - again no luck.
Any ideas /inputs you might have are appreciated. Thank you.

scf /scannow 'found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log' and then something about 'not normally suppoorted in offline servicing'.
I'm reading from MS Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files and in the mean time I'm also doing a chkdsk /r just to make sure that's not an issue before I start trying to repair any files. Both were refirbs (still under warranty) - so who knows about the HDDs. Luckilly I may have the other one to pull files from if necessary - if it is something that easy.
It's been doing this since pretty much the day I got it. I've never seen it work right on this one.
I appreciate the tip to factory restore but that is always the last option IMHO. That's a lot of time for me to get this thing back the way I want it. There has to be a fix for this silliness - I'll keep working on it and write back when I know more. Thank you very much for the help. If you think of anything else let me know.

Apple Wireless Keyboard - Volume & Brightness keys not working Windows 7

Finally got my wireless keyboard working within Windows 7 but the volume / Eject / Brightness keys all do nothing - all other keys appear fine.
I have reinstalled the bootcamp drivers for the 2nd time but still nothing. I had this all working previously but have factory restored my iMac and cant remember how I originally did this..
Any ideas?

Maybe you could update the Boot Camp drivers. That happened to my internal keyboard, and updated drivers some times fixed it. Other times it fixed itself after a few restarts.

Screen brightness keys not working

Simple as that. Any idea how I turned this off by accident?

Press and hold FN, on the bottom left portion of your keyboard, then press the brightness keys. IF this causes your brightness to change it means you have enabled the f1, f2, f3 keys as the stardard function keys.
To change it back to regular open up system preferences go to keyboard and click

Macbook Pro 15inch Volume, brightness keys not working (All the special F keys)

I have this problem on my MBP where my Fn (Function Keys) on the top row of my keyboard don't work properly. I use these keys all the time to adjust brightness, keyboard LED brightness, pause, play and volume but they aren't working anymore. When I press F12 it shows the dashboard. I already have the 'Use all F1, F2 ect. keys as standard function keys' unchecked in System preferences, Keyboard. I am on a bootcamped MBP but mainly use the Mac OSX. This problem is occuring on Mac OSX not Windows. I have not dropped my MBP to damage it or anything like that. I have installed 16GB Ram and the Seagate Momentus 750GB Hybrid SSD a few months ago. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Check the setting in Keyboard, Keyboard Tab, that the "Use all F1, F2, ect. keys as standard function keys" isn't checked.

Screen brightness keys not working after 5.0 update on Windows 8.

I believe the drivers for the screen aren't working since changing the brightness manually in windows isn't working either. There is also an error with the intel hd 4000 graphics, if that has anything to do with it. This problem did not occur before I downloaded the new drivers for windows 8.

Same thing is happening to me as well, just posted about it 30 seconds ago. PLEASE HELP

After Windows 8.1 upgrade the Function keys for brightness are not operating.
I've downloaded and installed all new software including that for the function keys without result.
Brightness is not working in power plans or in change pc seetings.
PS. Followed also the installation order file for Win 8.1 update.
Would appeciate any help.

This special key function can be changed in the BIOS.
The point is that you can use the function key pressing FN key or without pressing the FN key
But this has to be enabled in BIOS.
Go to +BIOS -> Advanced -> System Configuration+
There you can find the *special function key mode.*

What is the product number?
Did anything change before this started happening?
Power the system on and press F10 about once a second to get into BIOS. Once you are in BIOS, go to the configuration tab (typically next to last tab) and set Action Keys to enabled. Save the changes, exit, and the system should reboot automatically. Test the brightness keys wihtout pressing the Fn key. I suspect they will not work in this state, but I want to rule out the possibilities while awaiting the product number.

W7 function keys not working

Hello all,
So I just revived an old hard drive partition which contained Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Unfortunately, the function keys (sound volume, keyboard backlight, screen brightness) are not working. I can still set the sound volume through the Windows GUI, and can also adjust screen brightness (I havent found the keyboard backlight however). Everything else is working fine -keyboard, trackpad, USB ports ... (except Internet, see my other post). I tried reinstalling the Bootcamp utilities from Windows, but to no avail. More information about my Macbook below. Any clues ? Thanks in advance !

Ok so thanks for you help and suggestions. I do have one new problem now, which has nothing to do with this discussion, except that it occurred as I tried following your advice.
I open the BCA and ask to download the latest BC software. It then asks on which drive I want to download them. With all attempted devices I get the same message : "Please format your USB drive into a unique FAT partition" :
- USB Hard Drive with multiple partitions, one of which is a large enough NTFS partition
- SD Card 32GB connected with a USB cable and seen as a USB Mass Storage device with a unique FAT32 partition.
As you can already guess I do not have a large enough USB thumb drive (8 GB is necessary, they say). Does it only work with such a drive or do I have another problem ?
Also, a side question : do you think these drivers being erased when booting from outside are also the explanation for the Internet access problem ?

FN keys not working Hp probook 4320s

I am having a problem with the FN keys on a HP Probook 4320s and using openbox.
When I tried an ubuntu live cd the brightness, volume etc, worked just fine.
Using xev I got this output while hitting the keys

Also when I echo a value in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness the brightness changes but still fn keys not working.
Can anyone help me with this?.

I am having a problem with the FN keys on a HP Probook 4320s and using openbox.
When I tried an ubuntu live cd the brightness, volume etc, worked just fine.
Openbox is a window manager, not an environment like Gnome. It manages windows, not your screen brightness and wireless settings.
I can reverse the action in ubuntu and see what is wrong in arch.
Nothing is wrong. And your keys work fine, I know because mine do.
Is there a way to see what is called when pressing the keys in ubuntu?
They developed their own notifications that handle this. You can just call xbacklight and amixer for a start from xbindkeys.
For volume and brightness an applet is nicer to get the visal cue, you can do that with a little bash and Zenity easily, or code your own in GTK (I used pygtk for mine).
