Brightness Slider Disappears

I have a 22" Apple Cinema Display and a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5. After a short period of time working in my user, when I press the brightness buttons on the my monitor the screen adjusts, but the display brightness slider is gone. Also, the slider is gone from the system prefs displays window, and no slider when pressing F14 or F15. I switch to my wife's user and then back to mine, and the slider reappears again for a short time.

Has it always been like this? If not, can you associate it with any other change that may have happened to your system? If you use you wife's user profile, does the slider stay there, or is it the same as for your profile?
I'm thinking along the lines of an operating system glitch, or a glitch within your user profile.

Thanks for your solution, it wasn't quite what solved the problem but i remembered that i had a bit of salt water on my phone recently and spraying the charging port with an anti-oxide spray solved my problem, do you mind if i ask, how is the charging port related with the volume or/and speakers?

Objects in master slide disappear

Hi,
I got a problem with my master slides. I don't know why, but in some projects (not all), at some point, some objects (not all) in the master slide disappear. They are in the timeline, but we cannot see them in the document window display nor in the published swf.
What's the bug? (I'm using Captivate 5.5)

I totally understand about the visibility on Timeline having no effect on the published output.
Let me try to explain this differently. Consider your Captivate workspace to be like a piece of paper. Perhaps you lay another piece of paper sized identically to the first on top of the paper. That second piece is colored gray. So it would provide the illusion of a gray background. You insert a caption and you see the caption and the gray background. You later insert another image. Perhaps a small photo. Now you see the caption, the photo and the gray background. But what if the photo were the same size as the paper? Then the whole photo would just cover the gray background. That's what I was trying to get at by turning off visibility in the timeline. Thinking that perhaps you have something large that is just covering things up where you cannot see them.

Missing brightness slider for External monitor - normal?

I've recently hooked up my new (2 month) MacBook Pro 13 (mid 2010) to an external monitor, which is also connected to a PC on another input. In this dual display setup, the MBP local display has a Brightness Slider, but the External display does not. What is normal? Is there a way I can enable a brightness control for the external monitor?
Because the monitor is shared between the computers (1 on VGA, 1 on DVI), I want to use brightness controls on each computer and leave the monitor brightness "as is". It has minimal effect on the DVI input on my monitor, anyway.

Some details and experiments:
- External monitor is a Dell 1905FP, 4:3 1280x1024, with both analog VGA and digital DVI.
- I get the same issue - missing brightness slider on external - driving either input, using Apple branded miniDP to VGA or miniDP to DVI adapters.
- I've tried suggestions found elsewhere in the forum to a) Reset PRAM; b) remove 2 plist files and force OS X to reload those; c) retry Detect Displays. No change.
- Same results whether the display is mirrored or not - the built in LCD has a slider, the external does not.
- MBP keyboard controls for brightness work as expected on the built in display.
- MBP is current model, received as 10.6.3 and recently updated to 10.6.4. I don't believe I connected the external monitor while it was in 10.6.3 so do not know whether there might have been a difference.

You could create a custom color profile with reduced brughtness using the "Calibrate" function in the "Color" pane of "Displays" System Preference.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

Problem solved: I have been using Walnut for Firefox ver. 2.0.28 theme. For some reason this has been causing the problem. Started FF in Safe Mode, and the slider problem disappeared. Then proceeded to re-enable the Walnut theme: the problem reappeared. Disabled Walnut theme and reenabled all my other add-ons (about 6 of them). Still no problem. So, clearly there is a problem with the use of Walnut theme in FF ver. 32, at least on my Windows 7 installation.

Issue with the brightness slider (numeric value possible?)

As a retoucher I am supposed to keep accurate color management. I create my ICC Monitor profiles with an X-Rites i1XT meter. The screen calibration includes a brightness adjustment to meet a desired luminosity value (I choose to work on a 120cd/m level). My issue is that apples "brightness slider" wont define a value or percentage which I could associate with my current ICC profile. If I would for instance watch a movie in full brightness I could never get back to my previous brightness settings in order to maintain my desired color accuracy!
is there a way to read out or dial in a "brightness value" (maybe trough a script?)
does anyone know about an external tool that could help me (without interfering the ICCs)

1. This is a user to user forum. To send Apple your requests, use the Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback link.
2. The brightness slider sets an electrical level for screen brightness, but the actual brightness depends on the age of the screen & other components, previous brightness level, manufacturing variations, etc. For this reason, even if you set the level to the same indicated value each time, this does not guarantee the actual brightness will remain the same, nor can you calibrate indicated values directly in cd/sqm over long periods of time. You will still periodically have to use the calibrator.
3. You can use an Applescript to set the electrical level to a repeatable numeric value (although because of #2 above, this will not guarantee a repeatable actual screen brightness). See Any ideas on adjusting monitor brightness via AppleScript? for a suggested script. Note that you will need to change "Color LCD" in that script to whatever name your System Preferences > Displays > Display tab shows & change "0.8" to whatever brightness level you want (with 0 being darkest & 1 being brightest). You must also have GUI scripting enabled.
A more elaborate version of the script could save the current value for later recall or set different levels for different apps. For help with this, post in the AppleScript forum.

Satellite A350-13D - Brightness slider suddenly gone

I've got a toshiba satellite a350-13d, with windows 7, installed it long ago, worked perfectly apart from FN keys functioning. However that was not my problem, as I could change screen brightness with the slider provided by windows...
But... All of a sudden, my brightness slider is gone. I didn't install any new drivers, windows stopped showing me the opportunity to change the screen brightness (clicking on that battery status icon in the traybar it used to say "change screen brightness", and if i click on "more options" it's gone too). Does anyone have a fix for this?
I previously installed all drivers from the toshiba website, so that should not be the problem.

Can you change the display brightness here:
Control Panel -> All control panel items -> Display -> Adjust brightness (on the left)
Otherwise you could try to get the FN buttons working.
For that you need the Win 7 VAP (value added package) and Toshiba Flash Card utility for Win 7.

Why no brightness slider in graduated filters?

Why does LR4 no longer have a brightness slider in the graduated filters? LR3 had both exposure AND brightness. So far I can't seem to get the effects I used to be able to get using the shadows and highlights sliders that I could easily get with the brightness slider. Still experimenting but right now would say to bring back brightness.

Process Version 2012 has eliminated the Brightness slider...best bet is to use Exposure–which in PV 2012 is a bit more like Brightness but stronger so you need less. Also note that Highlights and Shadows are now different as well. PV 2012 needs a new learning curve. You need to adapt and adopt to the new behaviors...

Brightness slider does not work

about 2 days ago the brightness slider of my iPod touch 5g stopped working. (newest iOS version)
it's at the brightest level and if i turn it all the way down it hardly changes at all. (maybe it turns about 5-10% darker but it has almost no effect)
I reset it and restored it but it still doesn't work. is there anything else i can try?

If you successfully restored (went through all steps without error) to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

Probably the zoom feature enabled, double tapping with three fingers will bring back the screen to normal size again in that case.
To find out if the brightness issue is software related, set your device back to factory settings, without using the latest backup.
If the brightness sensor works after that, use the backup to restore from. If the problem is coming back, your backup contained corrupt data.
Also take your protective case or film on your screen off, just to make sure nothing interferes with the sensor.

Playbook won't charge past 77% and brightness slider greyed out / unresponsive

I have had this 32g playbook for over a year and this problem has persisted, no matter what I've tried. I have hard reset it numerous times and tried several of the suggestions provided on this site. Even at the 77% charge, the playbook battery doesn't last more then 24 hours and I am wondering what exactly is wrong with this device. Can anyone help me with this? I like the tablet and I haven't junked it because I want it fixed, but after a year of this same problem I am at a loss.

I got my playbook as a gift from a friend who works at Blackberry. It's a brand new employee clearence unit and hence there is zero after sale support, I dont know what i can do with it. The battery cant last at all, it's a faulty unit.

Brightness slider in display system preferences?

I am wondering if there is any way of bringing up the brightness slider in the displays panel of system prefereces. I use 10.3.9 on a G4 Digital Audio, 466MHz upgraded to 1.2GHz and the original GeForce2 graphics card upgraded to ATI Radeon 9000. As I have no brightness slider and the range of brightness adjustment on the Dell LCD monitor is very limited on both VGA and DVI the only serious way I currently have of controlling brightness is to set down the RGB sliders on the monitor according to the levels recommended by my Spyder2Pro profiling tool.
I am also going to check with Dell technical support to see if that is something that needs to be fixed.
Question -- would either of the following get my brightness slider in the displays panel?
1. Putting back the GeForce2 card
2. Upgrading to Tiger
3. Upgrading the graphics driver (note, I am fully up to date with Apple's panther updates)

My Cinema Display 27" is too dark. I'm running it in Bootcamp WINDOWS 7. Adjusting "brightness" only provides a "white-wash" look. It has no effect on the actual amount of light coming from the monitor---especially, when I've got it runnning side by side with non-cinema displays attached to the same Mac Pro. It's like there is dark-filter on it. Totally dim by comparison.

X131e/Win8.1 - Brightness slider no longer working

Any idea why neither the display brigtness slider nor the F8/F8 brighness function keys cause any change to the display brightness? It used to work but for the past few weeks it's not. I thought that slider was able to override any preset power settings.

Problem solved :-)
I had previously updated the Intel Graphics 4000 driver to the most recent version (v10.18.10.3496). After downgading it back to the version posted on the Lenovo driver page for this model (v9.17.10.3190) the brightness slider works again as it should.
