Brightness unadjustable for "High Performance" in Switchable Graphics Card Technology

Hello,
I have just transitioned to Windows 7 Professional on my Thinkpad R400(2787-A31)
However, after installing the Thinkpad Switchable Graphics Card driver, i am unable to adjust my brightness if i am using the High Performance mode. My laptop comes with ATi Radeon 3470 and Intel GMA 4500MHD.
I have already installed most of the drivers, and after some testing i realised that it was the switchable graphics driver that cause this problem. Before installation of this driver, i was on the ATi Radeon all the while and i can change the brightness.
I hope some one can help me with this driver issue. My installation of the drivers was from the support page. All except the PCI Simple Communications Controller has their drivers.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Rosemars,
Thank you very much for solving the problem.
The key solution lies with the BIOS update. For people who cannot get the tool to work(mine keep giving an error message), there's an alternativie BIOS update utility at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70351
This is for R400 and T400s, for other models please select your model number at the Support page and find the utility.
Cheers & Thumb Up!

Hello guys, took time for me to decide wether to join forums like this just to get real help coz goggle doesn't show any solution with my issue. i was able to update my video card with the old raptr app from amd and allowed me to maximize the feature of my laptop. after format i can't install these drivers "sp52929 & sp61216" for the said graphic card and the new and updated raptr is not somehow working. i get this error "The contents of the file cannot be unpacked. the executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. please obtain another copy of the file, verify its integrity and try again" (monitored the download and its not corrupted or anything) or using the driver from amd official site (tried different versions like amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit, AMD-Catalyst-HDMI-Hotfix-Win8.1-Win7-Dec10 etc.), the installation is fine but it's not functioning and this is the error i get "no amd graphics driver is installed or the amd driver is not functioning properly. please install the amd driver appropriate for your amd hardware" and "you do not have the compatible vga hardware to driver" during installation it reverts my resolution back to 800x600 as if it conflicts with the Intel HD Graphics Family. tried uninstalling intel hd graphics family first and install the radeon but it seems that the driver itself really is the problem. does anyone here experiencing the same? or someone here who can tell me what's really going on? thanks i advance Referrence: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/latest-driver-for-amd-graphic-card-not-working/m-p/5150764#M113344

    Hi All,
I need to design an architecture for BizTalk ESB for high performance.
We are expecting 10000 requests per minute at peak time.
There is no much business logic but rather messaging scenarios.
    Please suggest.

    Thanks Johns,
When I said Clone, I meant We will have 2 BizTalk Nodes, Application deployed on Both just to balance the Load using F5 Load balancer.
And Yes I have considered the SQL Clustering, but is my idea regarding this is correct if I say:
One Cluster 1 Node 1 Message Box will sit
On Cluster 2 Node 1 Other BizTalk DB's will sit
In case of failure on Cluster 1 Node 1(Message box) It will failover to Cluster 1 Node 2
In case of any other failure on Cluster 2 Node 1 (Other DB's) it will failover to Cluster 2 Node 2

which mac mini should i go for: the one with AMD graphic card or Intel. I meanly going to use this for hometheater and HD movies.

Intel HD 3000 graphics card can easily handle HD movies up to 1080p. But if you are looking at higher resolutions possibly 4k or 8k that are being released this summer in new TV's, I would go with the AMD card. The AMD card would be good for video and picture applications and also games. But if this is strictly to power your 1080p home theater setup then the choice is obviously the Intel HD 3000.

  • Installation of ATI driver for Radeon X1300, X1400, V5200 graphic cards on Windows 8.1

Dear Thinkpad users. After many failures and zero support from official resources, this is a comprehensive, unbiased installation procedure for the official ATI driver with Catalyst Control Center for Radeon X1300, X1400, V5200 graphic cards on Windows 8.1. In my experience, the latest driver for these cards written for Windows Vista 32-/64-bit works flawlessly on Windows 8.1 and you will benefit from multi-monitor support, full HW-acceleration and the PowerPlay option in Catalyst Control Center as well. Install only the official ATI driver, no other modification required. (The installation may work also on non-Thinkpad systems, such as Dell etc. but I have not tested it on that systems)
    Installation procedure:
    1. Before installation, ensure you are logged as an administrator
    2. Go to ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘Power Options’ and click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’ option from the list on the left side of the window
    3. Go to ‘Shut-down settings’ on the bottom and disable ‘Turn on fast start-up (recommended)’. Unchecking that checkbox is very important because it will prevent the problem with start-up black screen on the computer.
    4. Go to ‘Control Panel’ again and choose ‘Programs and Features’, then click on ‘Turn Windows features on or off’
    5. Select the checkbox ‘.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) to turn it on and wait until the installation is completed
    6. Go to Windows update and install all important updates including those for ‘.NET Framework 3.5 as well
    7. Download ATI video driver from the website of your hardware vendor. For Lenovo Thinkpad T60, T60p users the latest ATI video driver is for Windows Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), please visit http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t60... and download the driver
    8. Once you have the driver downloaded right-click on the file and choose ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu.
    9. Click on ‘Compatibility’ card then ‘Change settings for all users’ and check in the checkbox at ‘Compatibility mode’ with the option for Windows Vista as well as at ‘Run this program as an administrator’
    10. Double left-click and install the program.
    11. Go to the location ‘C:\drivers\WIN\VIDEO and open the file ‘Bin’ (for Windows 8.1 32-bit users) or ‘Bin64’ (for Windows 8.1 64-bit users)
    12. Right click on ‘Setup’ file; choose ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu and repeat the step 9
    13. Once you have set the properties, double left-click on that file and install the driver
    14. Follow the installation instructions and finish the installation
    15. Restart the computer
    cheers

  • Question regarding G510 and switchable graphic cards

So as I have mentioned in another post, my machine is the G510 with i5 cpu, 4 gigs of ram, HD4500 integrated video card and 2GB HD8570M dedicated video card.
My question is the following> Ok, the whole switchable thing is nice and all, but I'm having some issues with games recognizing my dedicated card, even if I put them on high performance through the switchable program by AMD. Is there a way to deactivate the integrated card once and for all and only use the dedicated one? What I have done right now is simply uninstall the intel graphics drivers, and disable the integrated device from the device manager. I have currently installed the AMD drivers from the AMD website and am about to restart my pc to see if it is working. If not, please feel free to give me any advice on how to do this or feel free to give me an answer to my question.

cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch should tell you wich one is powered. Do not forget to restart X whenever you switch cards.

  • Switchable graphic card problem dell inspiron 5521 15r hd7670m

    I have a dell inspiron 5521 15r with 1gb hd7670m dedicated
i installed the drivers they work fine but games give low fps as the seem to be running on intel hd 4000.
plz help i think gpu is not giving any performance .

    Hi umairrafiq13,
Just to make sure, have you assigned AMD Graphics to the games you play? If not, follow the steps below to enable switchable graphics:
Right click an empty area on the desktop.
Select “ATI Catalyst Control Center” from the context menu that appears.
Click Power and select Switchable Graphics
Choose an application (in your case the games) from the list or browse and select an application and assign the appropriate GPU.
If Switchable graphics is configured properly, please install GPU-Z and check under “Sensors” tab in the application while running the game in the background. It will show you the GPU being used as AMD Graphics.
Note: This 3rd party application is exclusively my suggestion based on the personal research and experience. Usage of this application is purely based on your discretion.
By the way, which is the benchmarking application you are using to check the FPS for the games and what are the games you are benchmarking?

  • Is there a Replacement Program for 2009 iMacs with MXM Graphics Cards?

I have an iMac 24" Early 2009 with the Nvidia GeForce GT 120 256MB MXM graphics card that is freezing and crashing over-and-over, especially when I'm away and it's not connected to my 2nd display! Odd. I've done the usual (cleaned the iMac inside, run fsck, SMC reset, PRAM reset, repair permissions from boot USB, disconnected all peripherals, changed mice and keyboards, changed the HD, reinstalled the OS, run Onyx and so on) and finally decided that it's a faulty graphics card that only a replacement will fix. When I'm home it's more stable when connected via a Displayport DVI adapter to DVI cable to a 24" Dell display. When standalone (like when traveling with my iMac for long stints out of town) it's unusable. It won't run for longer than 30 minutes, often not even 10 minutes, then I get screen artifacts and freezes and then have to fsck to repair the drive before running it again. Only running it in Safe Mode will allow it to run reliably.
However, I believe that I found a stopgap solution. I installed a program which I downloaded after installing XCode called Quartz Debug which has apparently allowed me to disable Quartz Extreme, 2D Acceleration and Quartz GL.
Turning off all Quartz graphics enhancements makes this machine stable if not exactly completely "mac-like" in its performance, but it's at least usable under most conditions for long periods of time. I know of people who have replaced the MXM graphics card on this machine with good effect, but it's an expensive proposition and these cards are apparently few and far between. Has anyone done this?
Based on the large number of nearly identical complaints about this model, both here and elsewhere, it seems like this MXM graphics card is defective or Apple's drivers are defective . . . well maybe, but it very, very predictably crashes when the computer gets hotter and not even _extremely_ hot, but well within what would be normal operating temps for other machines.
I've disassembled and completely cleaned the inside and have replaced the HD with an SSD and removed the optical drive entirely so if anything I've reduced heat-producing devices from the interior of the device installed a fan control and keep the graphics card features mostly turned off.
I've looked for but have yet to see a recall or warranty replacement program for this device and no, I don't have Applecare. I've owned several Apple products in the last two decades and with the issues with Apple products in recent years, it seems like Applecare must be figured as part of any Apple purchase if reliability and ongoing support is desired.
Ironically, I have an Apple IIc and a Power Computing Power Tower 166 that still work just fine, thank you!
    JoeL
    Atlanta, GA

This cropped up on my wife's late 2009 model 27" iMac, too.  Random freezes were encountered, unable to identify cause for months, then one day it started to become unable to complete a normal boot.  Tech Tool Deluxe was the only direct indication as far as diagnostics are concerned.  I've NEVER been abvle to get Apple's hardware diagnostic to run from the cloud, and we fianlly got it on a Techs' bench, AHT showed nothing wrong.  As you said, Safe boot is the only way to get into the system, and performance under 10.8.5 is glacial.
Now the kicker - we DID have AppleCare, and this phase of the MXM graphics demise hit within 4 or 5 months of AppleCare expiration.  There's no longer a flat-rate repair option, Apple doesn't have any stock of the video board to sell as a replacement part (was $169, or $179 w/no exchange) and even refurbs of this paltry (512MB VRAM) board can hit $300.  I know Mac users have become 2nd-class citizens in Apple's business universe, but we're now looking at sub-42 month lifespans for hardware?  At $2k for a machine that lacks touchscreen option, that's out of line.

  • Paying monthly for a mac help and graphics card query

So i'm thinking of buying a mac from the uk and i can pay it off monthly, which is 67pounds. does anyone know what the interest will be overall. its costing me a total of 2,240pounds. thanks.
reason for me buying a mac is so i can run final cut pro. does anyone know what the essential graphic card is to run final cut pro smoothly. or will the standard one be enough which comes with the mac pro?

i was told that the mac pro is the ultimate thing for final cut pro
It is. However, it's not a computer one should buy on a tight budget and from the sounds on it you're way over stretched as is. It's sort of like buying an Audi TT where you have to spend around an extra £9000 or so on optional extras to make it worthwhile. Same goes with the Mac Pro.
because it can be upgraded where as the imac cannot
True… but you still have to be able to afford those upgrades and without doing so your Mac Pro won't be going anywhere near its best.
i was told that having 2gb ram is more than enough
You were told what you wanted to hear and what would make it easier for you to buy it. For FCS you're talking about a 4GB RAM minimum configuration with an 8GB recommended configuration.
because we have 2gb ram at our uni computers and final cut pro runs smooth.
That's a matter of perspective as you might want to see FCP running with 4GB+ RAM.
i heard you can get a few problems with an imac because everything is compact into one interface.
Did you hear that from the guy trying to sell you a Mac Pro? While it's true that every system has it's problems, and the iMac is no exception, you find that the iMac is an extremely well performing system for its price.
Don't get me wrong, the Mac Pro is the best system to buy if you're a video editor. You do however need the budget to go along with that and video is one arena which demands the absolute most from your computer system. Lacking in one area actually hampers the performance of the system as a whole and it is no more prevalent than with video.
My recommended minimum Mac Pro package for a video editor is…
    Mac Pro 2.66Ghz 4GB RAM/2 x 500GB HDD RAID 0/ATi X1900 XT/1920 x 1200 resolution display/1TB HDD clone/1500VA-800W UPS
Remember, video editing is not just FCP and as your chosen profession it's the unfortunate cost of your

  • Problem with switchable graphic cards after installing windows 10

Dear support, after installing windows 10 i lost option to switch my graphic cards. I already have installed new drivers for win10 64-bit. But it doesn't work. New drivers which i downloaded here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+10+-+64 doesn't support my graphic card. So i don't know what to do to get right drivers and be able to switch my graphic cards. Thanks for any help.

    Hi there
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you installed Windows 10 and that switchable graphics is not working for you. I am happy to help. Unfortunately this is not something that AMD can help with, as it is a customized driver for your notebook. Did you do the Windows 10 installation as an upgrade and if so which operating system did you upgrade from? The existing HP drivers can be found here: HP Pavilion g6-1004ev Notebook PC but they are for Windows 7 or 8 depending on your choices. You could try those and install it using compatibility mode and see if that works. How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10 - answers.microsoft.com Let me know if that works for you.

  • Is it possible for apple to upgrade my graphics card

I've installed windows via bootcamp on my iMac and for gaming I really want to install a new graphics card, if I were to purchase one would apple install it for me?

If your iMac is still under ApplrCare warranty, you will void your warranty by doing this.
If your iMac is a 21.5 inch screen model,  then you cannot change out its graphics chip.
It is soldered to the logic board.
If your model is the 27 inch screen model, then it is possible to change out the graphics chip, but you'll have either take to an Apple authorized service center and pay to have this replaced/upgraded. Apple, itself, won't do the upgrade.
You need to seek out an Apple reseller/ repair center to pay and do the work, if they are able to do this.
OR, you can attemp to open your iMac and do this upgrade yourself. I highly discourage you from doing the upgrade yourself, though, because doing any major work inside an iMac is not for a tech newbie or novice and if you do not have a clue as to what you are doing or have never done a breakdown/reassemby of a Mac, you can easily turn your iMac into a nice looking paperweight.

  • High CPU usage when graphics card is put at work

I have a 13inch Air with 2GB RAM and 256GB  with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. All possible updates have been installed.
I noticed some tearing when trying to move program windows across the screen so I started checking the CPU usage. I saw that it is spiking to 25-35% when moving a window across the screen. When you drag down a window you can see the different copies of the top bar across the screen. Not smooth at all like on a standard PC windows system. Same issue when scrolling through webpages which spikes the cpu
I also noticed a high cpu usage when playing mkv files 25-30% while on an Atom HTPC i get a lower load playing the same file. The Air should be faster than an atom with a nvidia 9400m when playing video files.
I already tried updating the nvidia files to the latest version on their site by hacking the driver inf but this did not resolve the issue.
Has anyone experienced the same or know what could be causing the beavior?
    Many thanks

Maybe my initial post was not clear so let me add some clarifications.
I have the problem with Aero disabled
I have the problem on the Apple site which does not have any flash content.
I have already hacked the lastest nvidia drivers to get them on my system which did not change anything. Can you provide a link to some other 'supported' beta drivers?
I am using the new 13 inch air so it has the newer graphics card so I would expect it to be faster than an old HTPC with a 9400m in it. I wasn't stating that my Air had a 9400m.
It would be great if someone you also do the test to check the cpu load:
    - when playing a 720 mkv
    - when dragging a window across the screen
Just open task manager and see if the CPU spikes.
    Many thanks!

  • Luns on outside half of disk drives for higher performance

    Hi,
I undrestand that luns created on outside half od disks drivers can produce better performance.
in my case we have NAS,connection type iscsi, 5x 1TB disks. and RAID5.
the question is if I create x 1TB or x200GB luns, in term of performance of luns, how much discrepancies should i expect? would you say more or less than 5%? comparing the slowest lun to fastest one in each senario .

    This caught my eye <http://www.barefeats.com/hard100.html>
but then read they haven't incorporated a 64-bit EFI driver for 2008 MacPro's to boot from externals and isn't port multiplier aware.
This seems to be SATA only, not SAS. Click on "E8 ML" in:
    <http://www.hptmac.com/US/product.php?_index=43&viewtype=enclosure&company=Enhan ce%20Tech#>
None of the boards you list have batteries, so if you use caching for RAID 5 or 6, you will need a UPS to avoid data loss if power fails. Without caching, writing will be very slow.
Port multiplies limit the data rate, so wouldn't be used for the highest performance systems.

Of course this question has been asked before. This is an interesting thread on stackoverflow:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10361311/diffrence-between-jrockit-in-bea-weblogic-and-sun-java-implementation
I remember reading that features from JRockit would be merged into the 'regular' runtime (and that's also in the wikipedia entry). I think the heap space deal mentioned in the above thread at least is already implemented, the server VM at least since Java 6 update 18 tunes the max heap space based on the system environment in stead of having a stupidly low default.
Doing a search for weblogic tuning guides also makes zero mention of JRockit anywhere. In fact this article right here:
    http://fasterbytes.blogspot.nl/2012/05/oracle-weblogic-server-12c-performance.html
points in the opposite direction due to Hotspot being more up to date :)
Finally: is there a Java 7 version of JRockit at all? It doesn't appear so.

  • Serious W7 Bug - ALL ATi Drivers for Thinkpads /w Switchable Graphics Technology bricks OS.

Alas, i have found one serious bug for my Thinkpad.
It comes with Switchable Graphics Card Technology, with an Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATi Mobility Radeon 3470 paired together.
I have initially installed Pre-RTM 7260(ok, i know it's leaked), and faced the problem for the first time after installing the ATi drivers from either Windows Update OR ATi's website. However i have downgraded back to Release Candidate as there was stability issues with EXPLORER.exe
Anyway, surprising what i've though to be a show-stopper bug was also present in RC 7100. After installing(or rather, midway through) the driver installation, the screen blinks for a moment and after that, Explorer.exe is nowhere to be found with only wallpaper. OS seems to be bricked as restart does nothing. Only a System Restore prior to installation would solve the issue.
After diagnosing the problem, i have found the issue to be with the Switchable Graphics Card system. In BIOS, it was set to Swithable Graphics, with OS Detection set to Enabled, Thinkpad LCD Display(for output). I tried to set the graphics to either Discrete(ATi) or Integrated(Intel) but when i booted the system up it was in SVGA resolution and DXDIAG stating no graphics found. When it was in Discrete, i tried to install the ATi drivers once again, and although installation was successful, after restarting the same thing happened.
To be fair, i have repeated the drivers installation EXACTLY the same for both Windows 7 Builds(7100 RC and 7260 Pre-RTM) and the same problem occured. I have also tried to install the ATi drivers before the Intel Chipset(and basically the rest) and it's the same nevertheless.
I believe that this is a serious issue with Switchable Graphics Technology for Windows 7 Beta, since we have to make do with the generic Microsoft display adapter alone. I hope Lenovo engineers can put priority a solution for this as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties.
When I installed RC1 (build 7100), it came with a built-in driver that worked just fine for the discrete graphics in my W500.
A few weeks later, I installed the current release Vista driver for integrated graphics (this one) and it is working just fine as well.  Installing the Lenovo driver gave me the ATI control panel (not sure what use that is), otherwise, it didn't affect performance either way.
I have switchable graphics turned off in the BIOS, OS detection turned off, and have the machine set to use the discrete graphics only.  I think it would be a bit much to expect either Microsoft or Lenovo to support the switchable graphics this early in the development of Windows 7.  Besides, the discrete graphics doesn't eat up the battery that much - I still get 3 hours of battery life, which is sufficient for my needs.
Maybe try turning switchable graphics and switchable graphics detection off in your BIOS, that might get you running again.
