Brilliant connection speed almost halved

Until about 3 weeks ago I had connection speed of around 14 megg, now it has dropped to 7.1 meg. I have tried running the router from the test socket, and tried a different router with only minor improvements. Below are the stats which do have some error readings. Any ideas, could in be the weather with moisture getting into distribution cables. (All underground feed to our property.)

I will need to move the HH to reconnect it to the test socket, as I have moved it back to it's original position. The problem is that the master socket is in the hall, and the HH is in a spare bedroom along with a switch, a networked printer and a NAS and I don't have an ethernet cable to the hall.  This will also mean another restart. If I am going to do this, would it be a good idea to put the previous HH online as it was only changed when BT sent me a new one gratis, some time ago, so it should be OK.
I suppose it would be better to put the existing one on the master and leave it for 3-5 day and see if it restarts. By the way, the bell wire is disconnected, and the extra filter is in place on the master socket, probably not needed as I disconneced the bell wire at the same time as fitting the bell wire filter. I did get an improvement when I fitted this, but it was over a year ago.
I will move the HH in the morning and see how it goes. If it restarts I will put the older HH in the master and see how that goes. I will take stats regularly and report back here.  Thanks again for help.

  • Connection speed halved

I used to have a 0.5mb connection, but now it's been reduced to half that!
The default sync rate for my netgear modem is 480, but it used to be around 608.
    I've also tried a bt homehub v2, but that's worse at 352kbps.
    Could a moderator please help?

Thank you for the welcoming response
I'm not currently able to use the bt speedtest. I receive an error message. I'll try again a little later.

  • Issues with Infinity - Connection Speed & Other Pr...

    Hi all,
I had Infinity installed on 2nd November.  Besides some issues with BT mixing up delivery addresses the installation by Kelly Comms went smoothly, and was setup within 45 mins.
Initial speeds were very good, achieving 74Mb/s Down & 18Mb/s Up with a Ping/Latency of 5ms  Excellent really considering the sub 5Mb/s I was used to with ADSL.  The high connection speeds remained over the weekend until about 4pm on November 5th.  I found that the Openreach Modem had lost connection (flashing DSL light) and my HH3 Broadband light was a steady orange.  I left this for a while before picking up my landline to call customer services only to find that my line was dead with no dial tone.
Broadband eventually came back on service later that afternoon, but at a much lower speed of 43Mb/s Down, and an almost impossibly slow 0.97Mb/s Up.  Ping/Latency has also slowed to around 20ms.  During the evening I managed to get through to customer services in India, who were able to start dealing with the fault on my phone line.
Initially I was told it would be the 12th of November that the problem with the phone line would be resolved.  Fortunately enough it was then fixed the following morning by an apparent engineer visit.  I was unaware of this action until later in the day, but had noticed before leaving for work that Broadband was yet again down.
So to cut a long story short: I have a phone line that works, but a big reduction in connectivity speed especially upstream speed.  Should I be contacting BT to investigate yet another potential problem bearing in mind that I am still within the supposed '10 day training' window.
(All speed tests have been conducted via a PC connected by ethernet directly to the HH3)
If anyone can advise me it would be much appreciated.

    Hi Tidycarrot,
Welcome to the Forum. What was the speed estimate given to you when you signed up to the service? If the speeds you are see are well below that estimate, send me in your details using the link below and I'll run a few test on you line from here.

  • Just cannot get a good connection speed....

    Hi all,
We changed our ISP from a steady 2MB connection with TalkTalk to a potential 8MB connection with BT about 2 and half weeks ago.
The TalkTalk connection was sound.....It was stable and reliable and we never had any problems when accessing the internet, downloading files and using games consoles for online play.
Then we got BT (My dads call, not mine...) and things have just hurtled downhill at a gargantuan rate.
We were told of a 10 day stabalisation period, which I was willing to ride out, despite a horrible connection speed which made browsing, downloading and playing on my PS3 close to unbearable.
We have contacted BT by phone numerous times to no avail, and our speed hasnt improved ONCE over the last 2 and half weeks we've had the connection active......I figured the 10 day stabalisation period would have improved gradually over that time, and not just suddenly kick in during the end of the 10 days.
I've been using the Homehub 2.0, but the previous Router doesnt seem to work either (Netgear), so I;m assuming its the connection itself causing the problems......I'm 95% sure its nothing we can do about it.......I've personally tried everything and had no success whatsoever (tinkering with router settings, trying different routers etc.)
The router stats are below.....According to a speed tester, our download speed is 0.13 and upload speed is 0.46 (obviously not what it should be!)

  • Weak connection speed on Mac vs. PC

    Hi.
My MBP 17" which is a year old has since day one been having problems with download/upload speeds compared to my old PC.
When I put them both up for a test on my 30/30 mbit connection I get the following results:
    Wired
    PC: 3,9 MB/s download - 3,5 MB/s upload.
    MAC: 2,4 MB/S download - 2,3 MB/s upload.
    Wireless
    PC: 3,1 MB/s download - 3,0 MB/s upload.
    MAC: 2,2 MB/s download - 1,9 MB/s upload.
As you can see the Mac is always about 1-1,5 MB/s slower than the PC regardless of connection method. Please notice they are both standing in the same room, next to eachother with nothing to disturb the wireless signal. I've also tried changing their position.
Please help me gain my full connection speed with my Mac, be it wired or wireless, there must be some settings or things to tinker with.
Note that I am running with a fully upgraded Lion, this didn't change my speeds.
Below are some specifications for my Wi-Fi and router: (also note that I am not able to change the router as it delivers my optical TV through the internet (which doesn't work with any other routers, I've tried)

    Network Type:          Infrastructure
    Security:          WPA2 Personal
    Signal / Noise:          -50 dBm / -91 dBm
    Transmit Rate:          54
It's a Linksys WRP-400 router. With default settings (only added a WPA2-key and changed the SSID)

If you want my honest opinion based on my real life experience, almost all Linksys routers out there are anti-macs... I've had 4 and all have been crap, as soon as I changed the router to a USRobotics, 3COM, 2Wire, Airport Extreme, Vizio, NetGear, etc. it all worked fine...

  • Slow dial-up connect speeds

I need help! I've had my mini for 9 months. It's used primarily for internet/e-mail and occasionally some iphoto and itunes fun. I live really rural so dial-up internet access is my only connection option (No DSL/cable available). I have used the same ISP since my PC days (before the mini). The mini used to connect around 36K, but modem connection speeds have degraded overtime to 14K or less (have seen 9600!). I regularly run the maintenance scripts and occasionally repair permissions...I use YASU. Also reset the PMU. My mini went to Apple repair once for slow connect speeds but I was told it is my ISP.
Yesterday, I pulled the old Windows PC out and powered it up and using the same phone/modem cable from the mini was able to consistently connect to my ISP at 42-44K!! Wow! High speed!! Replugged the same modem cable into the mini and was able to connect at a blazing speed of 14.4K! There obviously is something wrong with my mini or its modem. Any suggestions or is it time to retire the mini and go back to the big, noisy, awkward Windows PC?...after all web surfing and e-mail is my primary computer usage.

I just bought a new 12" Powerbook and it will not connect to my local dial up ISP any faster than 28k. I've had the same ISP for over ten years. I've had the same phone line in my same apartment for over ten years. The G3 iBook I just sold connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 iMac I have at home connects at 56k almost every time. The Performa 6400 I used to have connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 Sawtooth I have in my music studio a couple of blocks away using a different phone line connects at 56k almost every time. Same ISP for over ten years, two different phone lines that work fine with four other Macs, the only Mac I've had that won't connect at 56k is my brand new Powerbook. It won't connect at 56k using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4 or 10.4.4. I tested the connection with CNET's online modem bandwidth test page and the Powerbook modem was connecting at about 26k.
so I took my PowerBook to the Apple store in San Francisco, they sent it to be repaired and when it came back said they replaced the modem, but it still won't connect at 56k when all my other Macs will.
so I took my PowerBook back to the Apple store in San Francisco, and they connected it to a phone line and got a 31k connection and told me, Well the modem connects, so as far as we're concerned it works, and the 56k is only the maximum theoretical connection speed and Apple does not guarantee you will actually get that modem baud rate, so we are not going to do anything else about it. I told them that there is nothing theoretical about all my other Macs connecting to the same ISP at higher speeds than the PowerBook and that Apple should be able to test the PowerBook to determine if their own tech guys can get a 56k connection with my PowerBook. The Apple store guy called his manager, who refused to do any more work on the computer.

  • Network Magic Connection Speed Fix

This came Directly Fom the net work Magic team.
Our engineering team has informed us that the issue is now fixed, please retry the speed test, if it still fails you will need to delete a Network Magic reg file and reboot your computer, please try the following: 1. Verify if you have 32 or 64bit operating system: *Click Start and right click on Computer and select Properties *Under the "System" it will show either 32 or 64bit. 2. Click on Start 3. In the Search field type REGEDIT and press enter. 4. Depending if you have 32 or 64 bit operating system, navigate to the following path: *64-bit OS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Pure Networks\Platform\1033\SpeedTest\nm and delete the "nm" folder only *32-bit OS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Pure Networks\Platform\1033\SpeedTest\nm and delete the "nm" folder only. 5. Close all the windows and reboot the computer. This should fix the Problem of Connection Speed. not showing up redirecting some where else.
    (Mod Note: Email address removed.)

    Peter,
Not only the Network Magic connection stopped, but if you try to connect with your Net2Go remote access website it's not there anymore.  Not even if you try to connect with your computer that's hosting it.
As I understand it, when Cisco aquired Pure Networks they issued their last upgrade, and with it came the announcement that the latest version would no longer have the Net2Go feature.  Indeed, they could choose to END Net2Go at their discretion.  It would seem that this is the case.  A shame, really.  My clients have come to depend on being able to retrieve their material and email links to their clients as well.  All Cisco had to do was provide a redirect, how much server power can that take up anyway?  It was almost like having a web site, and it cost nothing.  Sure was nice.
According to the End-Of-Life protocols as laid out by Cisco, they're supposed to give warning when there's a system they would no longer support, and they are supposed to get with you to help you ease into the replacement technology and give you several months to do so.  Slamming the door wasn't supposed to be part of it.
So now we have to either go without because nobody offers anything remotely like it (I checked), or we can all get domain names and pay for web sites and hosting.  Thanks a lot, Cisco.

  • Loss of Connection Speed

Can anyone offer any advice on how to get my issue with speed resolved?
For over 12 months I have been experiencing a connection speed of 3.5MBps, not great but acceptable. This meant a real speed pf about 2.7MBps.
About 4 weeks ago my connection speed suddenly dropped to 500k. I repoprted the problem and was told that there was a fault on my line which would be investigated. I had a return call saying that an engineer would need to visit, but the visit was not to be until 4th May. In this time my connection speed did improve a little.
I also phone BT Broadband sales to try and find out whatwas happeneding with BT Ignite as my exchange (Bradwell Abbey) is on a fibre to premises trial. I was told that they did not have any further information, but they were able to give me a small speed increase to 4MBps.
The engineer came and said that there was noise on my line and that he would connect me to a new pair of cables. He advised that it would take 72 hours for my speed to increase. After this time my speed had increases and I was getting a connection of 2200Kps, but nothing near what I had before. I therefore called support again and had over two hours on thephone, being passed from one department to another. The Braodband team saying that I still had a fault, but the engineers saying that I did not. Eventually they agreed that there was a fault and another engineer came on 16th May. he performed tests, but did not find any problems at my end of the line and I am not sure what he did at the exchange. However ny connection speed fell to 2048Kbpss still continuing to fall.
I called support again on Wednesday 19th and was told that my line needed10 days to stabilise and they were testing the slowest and the fastese speed that it could cope with. Today the speed is down to 1632KBps and I cannot see it gettinga ny better. I notice that the nosie margin on my line has now increased from 6dB to 13dB.
I cannot understand what has happened here as I was enjoying a reasonabel speed for a long period and this has been halved overnight. It does not seem that it will be resolved.
My next door neighbour has a connection speed of 4800KBps wth another provider. Should I be changing? I have been with BT Broadband since 2001 when it was first avaialble and having ISDN before that.

  • EA2700 download speed - local port connection speed

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded my ISP connection to 200Mbs dl and 20Mbs upload.
Using a test (speedtest.net) to determine my connection speed i discovered that the downloadspeed only reached about 75 Mbs , but with the modem directly attached to the computer it reaches almost 190 Mbs , so the problem must be with the EA2700 router.
I've tried everything , upgrading firmware , downgrading firmware , changing the MTU , dissabling IPv6 etc.
I have narrowed the problem down to this: After starting my computer (from the off power) the downloadspeed is 75Mbs (although the status within the routers webinterface says i have both on WLAN and localport 1Gb).
After restarting the router (by the routers webinterface) the speed is 180Mbs.
Seems like i have to start the computer first and then switch on the router (ridiculous i know) , seems like although the portspeed indicates 1Gb i only have a 100 Mb port speed....
Any ideas? or is this just a crappy router?

I suspect that this is a basic internal issue in the router.
I'm a retired networking system administrator and am not unfamiliar with devices that don't work the way the sales force claims -- especially at the upper limits of those claims.
I have only been playing with the EA2700 now for a few days, but am absolutely astounded at how "un-professional" all of the documentation and support information for the device is.
I say "un-professional" meaning -- seriously consumer oriented. No technical specifics. Granted I'm familiar with the "classic interface" on Linksys products and am not particularly enamored of this new web based environment. But that's just my history.
At any rate. I'm fairly certain that you need to try to reach "tier 2" (or maybe higher) tech support on the phone to find out what the actual throughput capabilities of the hardware and software are.
200Mbs is a "new" speed common to FIOS, but not to Cable. The end result being that the probability that new-product testing at that speed is at best, incomplete. And, I suspect it has not been done at all.
While the "chips" may be capable of running at Gig-a-bit speeds, a router's speed is controlled by the internal "routing speed" of the software.
Before I retired, I used to confont this kind of issue routinely in working with Internet2 -- the hardware available "claimed" to be able to do the job, but the on-the-job evaluations proved that it was not capable. But we had to spend a lot of time developing tests to refute manufacturer's (marketing) claims.
It may be the simple fact that the EA2700 (as best I can tell) is now very long in the tooth -- apparently introduced back in April of 2012 -- 3 years ago - an eternity in Networking. That coupled with the fact that the EA2700 is the "entry level" device in Linksys' EA product line.
An interesting review (Review Date April 30, 2012) in PC Magazine: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2403745,00.asp primarily discusses the WiFi side of the router. It hedges its bets on the hardware by saying "We will revisit this router when that software becomes available. Perhaps then the true value of the EA2700 will shine though." (I haven't found that review yet.)

  • E2000 low connection speeds

I recently "upgraded" my router from a WRT54G to the E2000, and changed my wireless computers to USB-N adapters. At first they were only at 54Mbps but found I had to use WPA2 (I was on WPA) and after making the change, I had anywhere from 107Mbps to 130Mbps connections. (Although these are dual-band adapters, I can't take advantage of 300Mbps because I left the router on 2.4Ghz only since I have some wireless-G only laptops and I understand you can't have the router on 5Ghz because they won't connect.)  Anyway, a few days later, when I checked the connect speeds of these wireless-n computers, one was at 5Mbps, another at 20-something.  Signal strength is good to the computers as it's always been.  Does this router "alter" the speeds "as needed" or something?  Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Solved!

I just completed setting up my WRT54G with my E2000 and switched the E2000 to 5Ghz band. Now when my computers with dual band capability connects with the E2000 (using a couple of channels in the hundreds, like 129 and something or whatever) I see a connect speed varying anywhere from 140 to 300Mbps, whereas all my 2.4Ghz equipped computers are at 54Mbps.  My daughter's computer has wireless-n but only on 2.4Ghz and it originally connected as high as 130Mbps until I switched the E2000 to 5 Ghz so now she's stuck at 54Mbps.  I suppose if I had bought the E3000 (?) or another model that also supports both bands simultaneously then she'd have her wireless-n speeds as well as the others that could run on 5Ghz which affords more "open" channels compared to what's available on 2.4Ghz... (didn't want to spend that much money on a wireless-n router since I knew I could still use my WRT54G since selling it would get me almost nothing for it... might as well use it...

  • Extremely poor connection speed plus the line keep...

    Hi
I moved into a new build flat in Jan 2013, and had an outsourced engineer activating my phone line early Feb. When I first signed up to the service, the estimated connection speed was advertised to be 3-7 Mbps.
It's been about 12 months since the line was activated, and I've been suffering from 2 main problems which were never resolved:
    1) Line dropping - the middle "Broadband" light of my BT homehub turns from blue to flashing yellow once every few hours every day. On a very bad day, it happens every 20-30 mins. I need to work from home sometimes and to connect to my company's VPN. The frequent disconnection of broadband has caused a huge amount of trouble in the last 12 months!
    2) Very slow broadband speed - the estimated connection speed has always been advertised to be 3-7 Mbps. In fact, in the first 2-3 months after the line was activated, the average speed was 3-4 Mbps, but since last April the speed has remained around 1-1.5 Mbps, or 2 Mbps on a good day.
The speed seems to fluctuate a lot as well - I can tell from loading a YouTube video. Basically at all times it is impossible to load a 720p video properly. Turned it down to lower bit rates, it loads for a few seconds then stops loading at all. About a few seconds later, it continues to load again... so on and so forth.
I used to be able to use LoveFilm/BBC iPlayer streamed to my TV in the first couple of months, but now there is no chance of doing it at all.
With the combination of the 2 issues, I have complained to BT so many times but every time I was told that my connection speed was good, even though it is far less than the speed range I was advised when I first signed up. It has been extremely frustrating that it's almost the end of my contract but I still cannot get a stable broadband connection nor a reasonable speed that will load a YouTube video smoothly!
Below is the stats I've got from a speed test and from the HomeHub. Tonight seems to be a less busy night, so I will post the stats from another time when the issues are really bad.
The problem has been bothering me since I moved into this flat and I'm getting really desperate so any help is much appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Will

if you cannot access the master socket and hence the test socket you cannot eliminate line noise caused by the internal wiring and if engineer finds internal wiring the problem then you will get charged £130 for call out
removing the bellwire is easy but really need to be the master as well - still all extensions will be a start  bellwire removal

  • Very strange internet connection speed issue,

    Good Evening all.
I have a strange issue.   I got hooked up with a new ISP a few weeks ago and since that time I have had very slow PC connection speeds.   I have done speed tests,  and I get between 16 and 17mbps down,  but the PC runs and acts like I am getting 4 to 5mbps.  I have a Compaq Presario running Windows Vista Home Premium.  Service Pack 2.  There is 3 gig of ram and a 3ghz processor, with a 32 bit OS.
Here is how the setup looks.   The netgear modem is plugged into a regular phone jack and then goes through a router and then it is hardwired to the PC.  If I wire the PC direcly to the modem instead of going through the router,  I get the same mbps no matter what.  Between 16 and 17.
The wierd thing is that I can watch a movie on Netflix through my Wii with no issues.    This is strange to me because I would figure there to be more issues with wireless connections rather than wired connections.
I have a netgear modem and a netgear router.
I am almost wondering if my PC is not processing the incoming speed correctly.   I don't know if this is correct,  because I used to have Xfinity internet before this new internet and had absolutely no problems.  BTW my new ISP is called Edge Networks.  The boast speeds up to 30mbps.  I know that 16 to 17 is pretty good,  I just do not know why It seems like I am not getting anywhere near that.
While on the subject,  I also have another PC that I have gotten a USB adapter and am using wireless to access the internet.   This PC gets 5 to 6mbps down.   It is a Compaq running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.  It has 3 gig ram and a 64 bit OS  with a 2.3ghz processor.
I do not have a clue why I have such slow inernet page loading speeds,  other than the possibility that my PC's are just severly outdated.
Can anyone help explain this issue?

    Evadfa, welcome to the forum.
I suggest contacting your ISP for help with the problem.  They should be able to help you since they know their product better than anyone.  I don't believe that it is a computer problem, since it is happening on two separate computers.

  • WRT610N connection speeds

I have V2 with the latest firmware on my WRT610N.  It keeps losing internet connection speeds.  Sometimes an IP release/renew will fix it.  If it does, It will be ok for a day and then it goes back down to 1.0 mbps.  I've tried a couple things I've found in this forum like turning off upnp and restarting but that hasn't helped.  Maybe I didn't do it right though.  Any ideas?  Please help!!

I have seen this as well.  This only seems to be a wired connection issue as I read others with the same complaints on this board.  I have a WRT610N v.2.  I have a new Alienware Area 51 ALX (fast) and I upgraded to this gigabit router.  I can actually track the slowdown using www.speedtest.net from almost 15 down to about 3 in the course of a day.  A router reboot returns the speed.  I also posted an issue with with a wired connection to my PS3 losing UPnP availability.  The fix for that was a reflashing of the firmware, but it seems that the only thing I would have needed to do is reboot the router as it showed up as unavailable again and I rebooted to router and it is available again.
I have sent this to Linksys tech support as well.  With as many people having this issue I hope they are already aware.
there appears to be a fix using a third party firmware update dd-wrt.  But I am not going that route just yet.

  • Confused connection speeds.

Hi BT Community, been browsing through here for a while now and I can't believe how many people have problems with this ISP, and the same sort of problems also.
    Here is mine.
Got my broadband installed in my new house last October (2010) and I was brilliant, was told to expect 8mb connection which I was getting, very very happy. Along came Christmas time and my homehub started giving me headaches, it would randomly restart itself, there was no obviously pattern, it could restart once a week or once and hour. So after enduring this for 2 months as I am quite a patient person I decided to contact BT about it. I got a lovely woman on the other line and we discussed problems (I am very tech savvy and have worked with networks and computers for a very long time) that we both suggested it could be. After some troubleshooting at my end and a lot of testing and diagnostics at hers, we decided to leave it a week and see how things go.
A week past and I was still having the same problem, homehub restarting sometimes 8 times in a row. Got on the phone again and arranged for an engineer to come out and check things out. He got his ancient laptop out of his bag and hooked it deirectly to my phone socket and done test (everything 100%) next he done the same test while connected through my homehub (again 100% fine) which didn't restart once while he way there conveniently. He was getting a constant 6000 kbps connection and streamed HD video on his laptop from the BBC iPlayer, which he was shocked that my connection could handle that. Anyway, I told him that I was unhappy with keeping the current homehub as I knew the moment he drove off it would restart. So he replaced it with one he brung in with him and then done the same tests on it as he did with the old one. Everything was grand and we had a friendly chat about when Infinity was getting put in my area etc etc, real nice guy.
So 2 months on and I can honestly say that My new homehub has never restarted on me once, Yay result????
Nope, ever since this visit by the engineer I have been getting extremely bad connection speeds during the day, am talking around 500 kbps, but in the early hours of the morning I get my full speed of up to 9000 kbps. To me this sounded like a fair usage policy thing where I have over spent on my bandwith and BT had chopped my speed or something like that. So I get on the phone and to my dislike I get a call centre in India, I sit and listen to the guy read from his script for a while, then I cut him off as politely as I can and tell him how it is, that I have done these procedure checks that he keeps asking over and over again, and that I know that the problem isn't as easy as plugging my filter directly into the test socket, or changing my filter etc... After me telling him everything that I have done, and he is finished doing the usual line checks and telling me that I am getting 8000 kbps sent to my homehub, we both come to the conclusion that it must be either my computer or my homehub that is at fault. I tell him that I will try a different adsl router and a different computer.
So I have went through 3 BT homehubs (borrowed a couple from friends) and I have tried 2 other Desktop computers and 3 laptops (laptops connected by ethernet and not wireless) and I am now running the broadband through a d-link adsl router with the same result.
I am confused as what this problem can be. During the day I get such a slow connection that I cannot stream a 360p youtube video without constant buffering, but yet if I am using the connection at 4am I am getting my proper service.
Find below my information (it's from the current d-link router I am using)
