Bring All App Windows to Front Setting (?!)

Please tell me I changed a setting somewhere and this can be fixed.
If I have twenty windows open - and I want to get back into my two pages documents - what is supposed to happen when I click on the Pages app icon in the dock?
The only information I know at the moment is that I /know/ Pages is open because I see the little spotlight under it in the dock. I can also see the TOOLBAR PULLDOWNS for Pages.
HOWEVER, there are no minimized icons on the right hand side of my dock for these OPEN DOCUMENTS. Which I understand because they are not minimized I guess...
Is this a problem in terms of how the OS is set up? Is there a setting somewhere that will clear it up?
Why don't my two open documents automatically pop to the front? And how on God's Green Earth am I supposed to know they are there if they don't identify themselves somehow?
Thanks for anything constructive on this.
- Jon

AFAIK, when you click on the window's yellow minimize button, the minimized window reverts to a Dock icon. I use Unsanity/s WindowShade X prefpane, which changes the app's Window->Minimize behavior. You'll just have to experiment.

  • Why can't I double-click to minimize all App windows to the Dock in Yosemite?

I am running the Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D131). I have checked the Dock preference 'Double-click a window's title bar to minimize', but not all App windows will actually minimize to the Dock - why? Apple Apps should behave consistently.
    These apps behave as expected:
    Safari
    Mail
    Terminal
    Preview
    Pages
    Messages
    FaceTime
    App Store
    iBooks
    TextEdit
    Terminal
These apps DO NOT behave as expected:
    Reminders
    Notes
    Calculator
    iTunes
    Contacts

Not a feature. In fact, there's no way, using just Illustrator, to extract embedded images. But then, it's only at version THIRTEEN! I save a PDF using no downsampling or compression, then open in Photoshop. When you open a PDF in Photoshop you are given the option to rasterize any pages or extract images embedded in the PDF. Choose Images then select the images you want. Save as TIF or PSD and re-link in Illustrator.
    Yes, it is stupid.

  • Bring background app window to the front from daemon

I have a daemon running that, under certain circumstances, needs to bring an already running applications window to the front (this is a pre login agent), thats not the hard part. The part I'm having trouble with is giving the window firstResponder when it is first brought to the front. When it does not have firstResponder it grayed out and icky....im not a fan of icky. If anyone has any tricks or tips on how one might fix that, they would be greatly appreciated

    From the j2sdk 1.4.1 API: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/awt/Window.html#toFront()
    toFront()
Some platforms do not allow Windows which own other Windows to appear on top of those owned Windows. Some platforms may not permit this VM to place its Windows above windows of native applications, or Windows of other VMs. This permission may depend on whether a Window in this VM is already focused. Every attempt will be made to move this Window as high as possible in the stacking order; however, developers should not assume that this method will move this Window above all other windows in every situation.
Because of variations in native windowing systems, no guarantees about changes to the focused and active Windows can be made. Developers must never assume that this Window is the focused or active Window until this Window receives a WINDOW_GAINED_FOCUS or WINDOW_ACTIVATED event. On platforms where the top-most window is the focused window, this method will probably focus this Window, if it is not already focused.

  • How to bring the new window in front of old window

    Hi everyone,
    Here is what I have:
there is a hyperlink on Page1.jsp, which opens another page Page2.jsp through onclick=
    window.open('./faces/Page2.jsp','mywindow','width=500','height=600');
However, after Page2.jsp is opened in a new window, it is always behind the old window with Page1.jsp. That is, Page1.jsp always gets the focus. I have to click Page2.jsp at windows' bottom bar in order to bring it up.
How to set Page2.jsp window in front of Page1.jsp window as default?
    Thanks in advance,

    it should have the focus

  • All app windows randomly flash in global repaint

As with many Swing apps I've used, the windows in my app are possessed with some impulse to convulsively repaint their entire contents at random times. This seems to happen most often when a significant paint task is dispatched in one of the windows. The convulsive repaint occurs in all of the app's visible windows, even where a window's contents have not changed in any way. The worst case is when I drag a scrollbar quickly -- it's as if the paint manager is suddenly bewildered by the mouse activity, and dispatches the insidious "paint gray" event to all windows, followed by the normal paint routine in all windows.
I'm very tired of watching my windows flash gray, then casually roll down their buffered contents. Somebody please help!
    1) Is there any way to prevent Swing from painting my window gray before invoking the usual painting of contents? I never ever ever want to see my window turn plain gray. Never!
    2) Or, can I control the repaint event, so that it is restricted to invocation on windows whose contents have changed? I see no reason to repaint window A in response to a scroll event somewhere in window B. ...it's times like this I wonder if Swing is secretly the result of a high school outreach program.
    Many thanks for your help!

I'm very tired of watching my windows flash gray,
then casually roll down their buffered contents.Yes. I think we all are.
Part of what causes this is the vast size that even a simple java program takes up in memory due to the size of the JRE.
    1) Is there any way to prevent Swing from painting
my window gray before invoking the usual paintingYou could probably change the default background color of windows in your windows display preferences, but that's probably not what you want.
There is no want to prevent this from ever happening, but you can make it occur less often by
    1. Doing all of your painting to ImageBuffers and just drawing those in your paint method(s)
    2. Setting an upper limit to Java's memory that is conservative and automatically restarting it when you get an OutOfMemoryError
of contents? I never ever ever want to see my window
    turn plain gray. Never!

  • Clicking on Dock icon only brings most-recently-used window to front

In Leopard, clicking on the iChat Dock icon would bring all iChat windows (contact lists, chats, etc.) in front of other open applications, and give focus to the most recently used iChat window.
After installing Snow Leopard, clicking on the iChat Dock icon only brings the most recently used iChat window to the front and gives it focus -- other iChat windows remain behind other application windows (if that is where they were before).
Is this just me? My friend tells me that it still behaves like it did in Leopard on his computer. Any ideas?

In the First Post your Specs said Snow Leopard, now they say Tiger
Sorry, I didn't realize it wouldn't remember that setting for me -- I am running Snow Leopard.
With Chax in Leopard/iChat 4 an extra item was added to the Window menu of iChat that says "Always On top"
No, this is not what I was looking for. I have another machine with Leopard, and it does not have Chax -- iChat windows are not always in front, but they all come to the front when clicking on the Dock icon.
I don't use it on the Buddy List as you can set it on Any iChat window.
What do you mean, "you can set it on Any iChat window"? You mean the Chax setting, or something else?
Are any Minimised to the DOCK ?
No, none are minimized to the Dock.
Chax does not work in iChat 5 and may be the cause of the issue.
There is a beta version of Chax for iChat 5.
I would delete Chax and then the com.apple.ichat.plist to remove any thing in it that refers to Chax and then relaunch iChat.
I deleted Chax and every Chax and iChat plist, then restarted my computer. The problem did not go away -- still, only one window comes to the front when I click on the iChat Dock icon -- the others stay behind other windows.

  • Forbid sending window to front after clicking on it.

I have application with main window in AIR which is maximized on whole screen and a few "small" windows which are created from Window component (Window was the only option 'cause times to time I need move it out of main application) and live above main app window.
I would like to have main app window always in the back and all other "small" windows in front of it. The problem is that whenever I click on main window system brings it to the front. So the question is how can I force AIR not to bring newly focused window to the front? I tried to set alwaysInFront=true on each "small" window (Window.NativeWindow.alwaysInFront) which worked but in the end it brought other problems and I didn't really liked the fact that they were always above all other application windows.
I know that I could use NativeWindow.orderToFront() method and after clicking on main app window send it behind all others but all sent windows into front then blink. Perfect would be to suppress default behaviour and don't let system bring clicked window to front.
    Any idea?

  • Minimized JFrame window to front

    Hi,
I having some trouble trying... to bring my frame to the front
I have a frame( frame1) and a button when clicked opens one more frame ( frame2).
I always want to make sure that only one frame2 window is open .. so i keep and check and when the button is clicked if frame2 is not opened then open a new instance .. else bring the existing window to Front.
Now toFront works properly if the frame is open and have some other windows open on top for frame2 ... when i click the button it comes to front... but when I minimize the frame2 window and then i hit the button again .. it doesn't come to the front. I want to make sure that the frame2 window comes back up .. even if it is minimized ...
Any help would be appreciated ... thanks in advance

    Only works in 1.5 but
    setAlwaysOnTop
    public final void setAlwaysOnTop(boolean alwaysOnTop)
throws SecurityExceptionChanges the always-on-top window state. An always-on-top window is a window that stays above all other windows except maybe other always-on-top windows. If there are several always-on-top windows the order in which they stay relative to each other is not specified and is platform dependent.
This will force your window to be always on top of all other windows.

  • ITunes 8 blocks other apps' windows

iTunes often will not allow itself to go "behind" any other app's windows.
You click any other app's window (or taskbar entry) to bring that app to the front, but that app instead remains "behind" iTunes' window!
This happens no matter what the other app is (Windows Explorer, IE, Firefox, whatever). The fault is definitely iTunes'.
One workaround is to minimize iTunes. Also, sometimes quitting iTunes and restarting it stops the problem.
    (Using Windows XP Pro SP3.)
Anybody seen this or have thoughts on it?

If you use Software Update it will designate the 10.7.1 specific for your model, and may miss somethings.  It is better to download the update straight off Apple's website.  Mind you, unless you know your software is not compatible with 10.7.2 or later, I recommend at minimum upgrading to 10.7.3.  That's where I found to be my happy medium with.   Run repair permisssion with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility when you are finished.  If you have any third party cache cleaning software remove it.   Especially remove MacKeeper if that got installed using these directions since it has given people more headaches than any.  The only utility you need is a backup utility.   And periodically let the machine stay awake running screen saver instead of energy saver.  This will keep the logfiles clean.  The combo updates are better than the delta updates.  Combo updates do multiple updates at once.

  • Xcode/AppleScript App - bring window to front

i have built an xcode/applescript wrapper application which executes a unix shell script. while the shell script is running (downloading + installing stuff, takes several minutes), the wrapper application is displaying an animated NSProgressIndicator (spinning circle). the idea behind this is that the user knows: as long as i see this progress indicator, the shell script is still busy. this all works fine.
however, as soon as a different application is covering the window of my wrapper application, i cannot bring my app's window to the front again by clicking on its dock icon or pressing cmd-tab. using exposé (mission control) it works fine. as soon as the shell script has finished, everything is back to normal.
it seems like the app is not responding to some events while waiting for the shell script to finish. what am i missing, any ideas?

Your application won't be able to respond to events if you are blocking the UI, such as running a long shell script or AppleScript without periodically giving the run loop a chance to do its thing.  You might take a look at running the shell script in the background by using NSTask.  Shane Stanley also has a chapter about doing this in his AppleScriptObjC Explored ebook.

  • How to bring a VI front panel to the front (of all open windows) when the parent VI calls a sub-VI in Test Stand.

In Test Stand when I call a sub-VI front panel, the pop-up window goes behind all the windows and the user just waits for the screen. I want the pop-up to come to the front so that the user can know what to do. I couldn't find any property that I can set which would make the called VI go to the front.

What version of TestStand are you using? Here are the TestStand palettes in LabVIEW for TestStand 2.0 and 3.1. You can also set a VI to be modal in  VI Properties>Window Appearance. Select Dialog or go to Cutomize and change the Window Behavior.

  • What is "bring all to front"

Under the Window menu is the item "bring all to front" and I have no idea what that means.  I thought it meant to get current windows shown but so far nothing happens when I click on that option.  ??????????????

For the application showing in the upper left-hand corner, selecting that option brings all of its open windows to the front or on top of any other app's open windows.
