Bringing friends iMac G4 up to speed...

Hey all,,
My friend Jay who is clueless about anything technical has an early iMac G4 and I thought I would do as much maintenance as I knew how and then show him.
It has 10.1.5 on it 512mb & PC100-222S, 800mhz.
I thought I would start by repairing permissions but have never done this from a start up disk????
It is not an option in Disk Utility on 10.1.5.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Al

I have to admit I wrongly guessed that this was what this question would be about with the title Bringing friend's iMac G4 up to speed.
Panther and Tiger are a world apart from Puma. In fact many applications today need at least 10.3.9 installed (just have a quick browse on MacUpdate).
Personally I didn't cut from OS 9 fully until Panther arrived as Ceetah, Puma; and to a certain extent Jaguar, didn't really cut it.
So I would follow Bee's (as always) excellent advice.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IMac Wireless Dropouts, slow speed , what is apple waiting for?!

    hello everyone!
    i switched a month ago from a pc to a mac (intel imac 20" , 2,4ghz)
and i must say that it's great, except this : My wifi connections has a lot of trouble!
a lot of dropouts , and even if i keep a strong signal for a while (yeah, some days it keep a descent signal!)
i ALWAYS have slow internet speed (using firefox, but is the same with safari )
my brother has a macbook pro , and at the same place, he got 100% full strength, and NO DROPOUTS
a few days a go we buyed time capsule, we use it now as the main wifi routeur, because with the 80.11N we are supposed to have a MAX range extension , and more fast surfing!
well,....my brother and my father ( macbook pro 5G & macbook pro 2009) , yes, they have a faster and stronger connection, but I HAVE IT WORST THAN WITH THE OLDER ROUTEUR ( US robotics 9108 with a 7db wifi antenna )
and i just updated today, a security update was inculed, now i have dropouts EVERY 5-10 minutes!!
so, i know a lot of people have this kind of problem here, it's not a new problem,so my question is simple :
WHAT ARE THE SOLUTION TODAY? if solution there is!
does apple work on this problem to fix it, or not?do they RECOGNIZE that there is a problem?
and if there's no solution possible, can i connect a kind of "usb wifi key" like those for windows??
hope that someone can give me a CLEAR answer , even if it is to tell me that it never will be resolved!
    greetings
    fbs

    litle update :
i went to apple center (in belgium) to tell them my problem (still have warranty)
they told me "bring us the imac we will check it",
well, they said they "intensly" tested the airport cart and there was NO PROBLEM
so, first of all, i had to pay the test... 180€!!!!!(233$) for TWO HOURS TESTING!!***!!! apple,do you have a job for me?
second, when i placed the imac EXACTLY at the same place where he was before , NO AIRPORT PROBLEMS FOR SOME DAYS, always 100% signal and fast surfing
but now problems are back!!!!and it **** me off!!i'm going to buy on of these usb wifi receiver to test :
    http://cgi.befr.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item= 110368113907
an usb wifi receiver... if it still dont fix the problem , i'm going to sell my imac and buy a "hackintosh" 'cause that's realy **** me off!!
so apple, thank you to suck my money,(even if waranty is still running), and not even have balls to admit that the imac, have some wifi trouble!!! thanks a lot!
i will update if an usb receiver work!
    cheers

  • IMac (Late 2006) fan speed is 4600 rpm and nothing will change it

I just brought my iMac 24" 2.16GHz Late 2006 back from the Apple Store today and the ODD fan is running at 4600 rpm!!! The noise it generates is way too loud. It is comparable to the wind tunnel G4 I replaced. Any thoughts on how to lower the fan speed?
I took the iMac in on 12 Sep to repair microphone and video crashes. They repaired the mike and replaced the video card with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. I picked it up on 3 Oct.
I have SMCFan and iStat Pro installed to monitor and adjust the minimum fan speed. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps (e.g., reset PRAM, Safe Boot, ran troubleshooting utilities, etc. to no avail.

    David,
Looking through my old posts to refresh my memory, my face is red as *I AM* mistaken:O
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4064287&#4064287
I was recalling that Intel iMac users were doing the wrong SMC result three years ago (actually they were doing the SMU reset that was for the pre-Intel G-5 iMacs), and that you and I explained to them the correct way - which is of course what you recommended above:D
Nevertheless, since there is no further risk of causing the fans to race in this instance, I would myself do the wrong SMC reset method, and if it does not work, turn right around and do it the way Apple recommends. This still might result in correcting the problem.
By the way, it was widely reported three years ago that the SMC reset was frequently not successful on the first attempt, so the alternative is to try this harmless procedure at least several times before giving up on it.

  • How do I connect my drive to iMac for best transfer speeds using an adapter

    Hi,
My question is: which port on my "old" LaCie hard drive should I use to connect to my iMac for optimum speed transfer? Should I use an adapter?
I am a pro music producer/songwriter & sound designer. I use large audio files in my AVID DAW Pro Tools 11 application both to read and write constantly.
For this I have dedicated hard drives such as a 6TB Promise Peagasus with Thunderbolt 1. But it's starting to run a little slow due to all the information residing only on this 1 unit.
I want to spread out my audio files on other hard drives as well. The one I MAYBE want to use, is a LaCie hard drive I have had for a couple of years.
Important: I only have 1 Thunderbolt port left to use on my iMac and 1 Ethernet port.
So do I need an adapter and what would be the speed then?
My question is how do I connect it for optimum speed transfer?
It is a LaCie D2 Quadra V2 E hard disk with 32mb cache.
    It has:
    1 FW 400,
    2 FW 800,
    1 High-Speed USB 2.0,
    1 eSATA 3Gb/s.
    I have an iMac 27" Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 running OS X 10.9.4.
I look forward to your replies.
    Kind regards,
    Michael

Thanks. Yes it is nice. Sounds interesting with your G force. I think I did put the Raid to 5, but cannot really remember. All I know is that when I did use Raid 5, I agreed to use 1 of the 6TB for some backup or security stuff that it takes care of on it's own. I thought it sounded good and safe when I installed it.
Am unsure how to check it.
I just read about the Raid block size which can be set to higher than my 32k in the Disk Doctor app to work faster with large amounts of continues data transfers. But it means that I should perform a new Raid. Not happy at all about this as I am very careful about my audio files.
Yes, I'll definitely go for the Thunderbolt/FireWire adaptor!

  • Can I download a copy of OSX Mountain Lion (which I paid for) from the App Store, to make a boot-able copy, from a Friends imac?

My MBP got screwy since Maverick install. I made a bootable copy on my machine of
Mountain Lion (or so I thought) with Diskmaker X. After moving all important files to an external drive,
I cleared HDD, and rebooted from thumb drive, with no success! This article gave me hope:
    http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/clean-install-mountain-lion/
Can I do this from a friend's iMac in App Store (my account) ?
    Thanks :)

If so, the first thing I would do is to back up your data on the ill mac. I assume both  macs have firewire port, get a cable and connect both macs via this cable. Then restart your ill mac by pressing T key after chime, it will become a simple external disk you should see on the desktop of your healthy mac. Back up your data.
Now, with this action accomplished, you may go on. BArney - 15E is optimistic and says how to restart in recovery mode—this may be possible if installation was complete for recovery partition (I doubt this, but I may be wrong).
Otherwise, I would reinstall from the scratch. If after connecting your ill mac via FW, you may see the disk in good order, you should also see the Lion installer within Applications folder. Copy it unto an external disk or flash disk and keep it safe, you will need it again.

  • IMac or MacBook Pro Speed questions.

I currently have the PB 1.67 Ghz. For those that have a New Intel MB-Pro or a iMac Core Duo could you please tell me if its a night and day difference in speed when using Motion? I'm Not talking rendering.. I'm talking interface speed.
My current computer is far from real time.
    Thanks
    Chris

Being heavy into Motion, I am reluctant to replace my
G5 with something just slightly faster in FCP/Shake
(and Shake Universal Binary isn't out yet), with a
non-expandable GPU. GPU is everything to Motion - I
want a hyperfast PCIe GFx card.
If I had to buy a new machine today, I'd buy a Quad
    with a 7800, not a MBP.
Patrick, true but individuals may need mobility and the MBP provides this. Granted, I am not the Motion poweruser you are, but Motion runs fast on my MBP. In fact, it feels (yes, this is subjective) like it is faster on the MBP than on the G5 Dual it was previously running on.
It all depends on your budget, the amount of time you will be spending in Motion (compared to other apps and their importance to generating an income or additional dollars), and your mobility needs.

  • 24" iMac 2.4GHz Fan Speed

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 24" Intel iMac 2.4GHz. Forunately I haven't experienced any crashing or freezing problems like some users have, but what I have noticed is that the fan(s) seem to speed up quite significantly for no apparent reason when the machine is idle.
When the computer is doing absolutely nothing sitting at 32 degrees, the fans speed increases from around 1200rpm up to about 3300rpm.
Can anybody tell me if this is normal for the 24" iMacs? I used to own a previous revision 20" iMac and I hardly ever heard the fans kick in. It wouldn't normally bother me, but the fact that it makes a lot of noise is kind of annoying.
I have updated to 1.1 with no joy. Currently I am using iStat Pro via Dashboard to read my system performace.
    Thanks,

    Elusive,
Any luck finding an answer? I have a similar problem.
My Hard Drive fan is running 5000-5500rpm all the time.
I've followed the instructions for resetting the SMC:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
But this did not help. It seemed to get progressively worse. At first going full speed only occasionally, then after around an hour of use, then less. As of tonight it comes on when I turn on the machine (after being unplugged for several minutes) and stays on at the >5000rpm speeds.
If you find a solution, let us know.
    Thanks,
    jp
    My setup:
    - 24" iMac 2.4GHz Intel (new/aluminum)
    - checking stats with iStat Pro widet
    My Fans
    - Optical Drive: 698rpm
    - CPU fan: 1200rpm
    - Hard Drive Fan: 5492rpm

  • Do I need to bring my iMac to one to one?

I have a one-to-one appointment coming up, and I'm not sure if I need to bring my 27" iMac with me. The workshop is for Final Cut, and some media in my projects is on the computer, not my external drive.

From what I know, you don't need to take the iMac. The workshop is done with one of the iMacs at the Apple Store. I would recommend you to copy your projects to an external drive and take it if you want to have them a look at the Apple Store

  • 2011 i7 iMac optical drive fan speed

Can aynone confirm whether the deafult speed for the optical diive fan on 2011 i7 iMacs is 1150 RPM, i.e. 150 RPM faster than the 1000 RPM for 2009 / 2010 iMacs?

It is normal for the fans to run, they're there to cool down your machine by >>passing air over parts that heat up, they should be extremely quiet so you >>cannot hear them unless you have extremely sensitive hearing. 3500 RPM is >>extremely fast though so it indicates something else might be going on.
I am noticing the optical fan running quite high. And this is with normal usage. Web surfing, file manager lookups, nothing much else. However, I notice the optical fan speed climbing and getting louder. It will get up to approx. 5000rpms. This i can confirm because I am running hardware monitor and this is what is is showing.
So my question is this. Are the iMacs supposed to be relatively quiet for normal processing? When I say quiet, quiet so that you cannot hear the fans? I can understand a graphics intensive/watching movie causing them to get louder but other than that should they not be relatively noiseless?
Maybe some of you techies out there can reply with telling me what an iMac should be running at. (wrt fan speeds/temps). I would like to know how far off the norm my iMac is.
Thanks again and I look forward to your replies.

  • Betadeck to iMac, SDI- external HDD speeds?

Im trying to capture from a betadeck with an IoLD via SDI to my iMac's external Harddrive.
I am getting constant dropped frame errors.
My external harddrive is a 5200rpm drive. We are guessing that the drive speed is too slow, and the information is too much to handle for the drive.
Will a 7200rpm or 10,000rpm drive fix my problem, or is it something else?
    Thanks
    -Mike

    Good guess.
5400 RPM can barely manage DV. Now that you are getting into uncompressed SD, you need a FW800 hardware raid solution, like the Firewire VR by CalDigit or G-Raid2 by G-Tech.
Oh...wait, you already have the I/O LD connected via firewire...and you are on an iMac. Well...this setup is less than ideal. You only have ONE firewire bus, so using it for both the capture device AND the media storage won't bode will. Dropped frames will be very commonplace. iMacs ain't designed for uncompressed work..this is why. You really need a MacPro or MacBook Pro that have expandability...ability to add additional firewire buses, or connect to eSATA RAIDS.
So it isn't only the drive speed, but it is the iMac.

  • Imac 2009 scren and speed

    Hi iMacers
question 1 - My imac hasgone slightly darker in the bottom left hand corner, take it some sort of LED problem in screen. Can it be fixed?
Question 2 - My Mac seems to be running a slower please give some advice how to speed it up. I have taken most of my pictures and videos off and put on porable HD. seems as if Mac is thinking or doing somrthing in background?
    Thanks
    fffflip

Correct, but that does not mean that is has ceased working!
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • Cooling fan for iMac G5 - at top speed

Even when only one program is open (like now with Firefox) the cooling fan is running at top speed.
Is there any way to check on why and solve the problem?

    Hi jaygreenman,
Just wanted to suggest, since you are not receiving much help here, that you may want to post your topic over in the iMac G5 usage forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=881
Do a search there for "fan running full speed" or something similar and you'll find a lot of topics dealing with fan problems.
Sorry that's all I can suggest but hope that helps some,

  • Will my imac run the fast speeds for google fiber?

How can I know in advance if getting the fast googlefiber will actually make my internet connection faster on my imac?  Imac is four years old, running 10.6.8.

Not knowing what you're current Internet speed is, I can't say for certain you'll really notice any difference for ordinary web surfing. I have a  slow DSL and the only reason for getting a faster speed would be for downloading and uploading files. At around 1Mbps down and .38 up, pages load quite fast, so I don't think I'd notice the difference for ordinary loading of web pages. But going from my current DSL to Verizon fiber would make a significant difference for larger downloads. Right now a 1GB file takes over two hours; with 15/5 that would take far less, just minutes I suppose.
But to answer your initial question, the Mac won't have any problem with the increased speed.
