Bringing iDVD menu template into FCP...

Has anyone figured on a way to export an iDVD template (with content in the drop zones) for use in other apps such as Final Cut. I've done this with iMovie and it works great, but there doesn't seem to be a way in iDVD other than burning it to a DVD and capturing it after it's been compressed.
Thanks...

I don't believe it's possible because you have to encode in order to get the footage.
You can encode, and then demux, and use MPEG Streamclip to extract the template, but you'll get a quality hit.

  • IDVD Templates into FCP

Okay, I know they're cheesy, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to get iDVD templates into FCP and if they're key-able once they're in? Or, if anyone has any tips on where else to get some fun templates? I know FCP has a lot of transitions, but I don't know about moving masks or anything.
I'm specifically thinking of the one that has the vertical bars sliding back and forth across the screen. I don't have After Effects or Motion, so I was just cropping slugs into bars and keying them around, but it seemed kind of silly. Any better ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ariel.

You can copy the .mov files out of iDVD 4.x themes.
You will need to go to iDVD application and do a control-click and slide down to Show Package Contents. Then open the Contents folder and then Resources Folder.
Find the theme you want, I'll use 000_Theater.theme as example. Control-Click on 000_Theater.theme and slide down to Show Package Contents. Hold the option key down and drag the BackgroundMovieNTSC.mov to your desktop. (the option key will copy the file to desktop so you don't mess up the original theme) This is a QT file that you can now put into FCP.
The only problem is that the movie is 640x480 and not the 720x480 format that FCP uses.

  • Bringing an Illustrator Logo into FCP/Motion

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to bring some Illustrator logos into Photoshop and then into FCP and Motion. When I bring them in they look squashed and out of proportion.
I know about changing the pixel aspect ratio to D1/DV in Photoshop before bringing them into FCP, but no matter how I do it they still look slightly squashed.
Can anyone out there take me through the steps of doing this. It would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ray

Try pasting the logo into a photoshop file 720x540. Then change the image size to 720x480 (if you're working in dv or 720x486 if uncompressed.) Uncheck the constrain proportions box. It'll look squashed in photoshop, but fine in fcp.

  • Final Cut Pro 7.0 nd Menu templates

Currently, I am looking to upgrade to FCP 7.0 via FC Studio Pro 3, and I am wondering about the menus templates/markers that are claimed to be available in FCP 7.0. Ultimately, I would be looking to try and generate a Blu-Ray disk by outputting in FCP. The web site has some info on the menu templates, however, is possible to have two separate menus one linking to the other? My DVD disks traditionally have two separate menus (one for each separate event) on the same Blu-ray disk. Currently, I can do this in DVD Studio Pro 3.0.,and have the ability to nest up to 99 separate menus/disk.
I am aware of the lack of support for Blu-ray disk authoring in in DVD Studio Pro 4.0 andI was wondering if the Blu-ray encoding and available menu templates in FCP 7.0 would allow me to do this.
Toast Titanium allows separate menus (one per each clip), however, they all have the same background and title as the first and there is no way of changing this.
Does anyone know or has already tried working with the FCP 7.0 and Blu-ray disk menus?

Did you convert the footage to ProRes?
You know, FCP 7 isn't supported on Yosemite. In fact, it wasn't supported on the previous OS either...Mavericks. And running old, end of line apps (discontinued 3.5 years ago) on unsupported OS versions means they won't be stable...because Apple not longer makes sure that FCP 7 will work...it's moved on to FCX.
And Apple is also moving away from Quicktime, and moving towards AV Foundation. The core of FCP 7 is Quicktime.  Mavericks no longer runs Quicktime 7, and that was a fully featured app. Quicktime X is unfinished, and very stripped down. It cannot open all codecs of MOV files...it converts ones it doesn't recognize to H.264 or ProRes and then opens them.  So one BIG issue is that the main core of FCP is missing, and what is there is a very stripped down, unfinished piece of software...that Apple is also phasing out.
My advice is if you want to continue using old software, you need to run it on the OS that supports it. THis is true of any software....be especially so if you are earning a living with it.  If you can't do that, then looking to the future and looking at supported editing apps might be in order. If FCX isn't your thing, there's Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer...

  • Importing photoshop images into fcp?

I'm currently working on a project where i'm having to blend in images/photos (jpeg/tiff format) with the HD footage i'm editing with. Simple question really; do you recommend that I re-size the images in photoshop so that the image is the same dimensions as the footage in final cut? I know some blurring/loss of image quality will occur but that's not important at this stage.
For instance my settings in fcp are HD 1440x1080, 16:9 aspect ratio. Just so I don't get left with big black borders around my photos once they're in the sequence is it best that I doctor them in photoshop and size them to the exact fcp frame that i'm working with?
I assume that if the image is too big for the frame in fcp it will crop the image so it fits nicely?
Thanks for your help on this,
    Alex

Your assumptions are all misguided; you're in control of everything FCP will attempt to do to your still images. However, you need to understand how to wrest that control from the defaults and that's a few dozen pages in the manuals.
Bringing layered Photoshop documents into FCP is different than importing still image files. Another section in the manual. There are entire websites dedicated to this topic, too, and you're going to to need to experiement on the numerous techniques suggested.
At its basic level, you want your images to have pixel dimensions that will support the maximum zoom you will want to use. If all of your images are simple full frames, create your still in the exact pixel dimensions of your sequence. Yes, you must understand the difference between square and rectangular pixels. Manual again.
If you intend to do zooms or other complex moves, you will want to size your images about 200% larger than your HD sequence.
Still images have no fields, only sequences do.
Stick around for a few more days and you'll get several additional posts.

  • Unwanted block on menu template

I dragged the Grid menu template into my project. It has boxes for the dvd title, for play, and for scenes. But there is also an extra block that seems to have no purpose. I can select it but cannot delete it. Is this just a buggy template or is there some way to get rid of this extra block?

    Welcome to the forum.
The elements that you are seeing might well be extra Buttons, that may, or may not come into play, when you do the authoring. That will depend on the Markers that you have set. Do you see this initially, or do you see blank Buttons, when you Preview?
As a bit of background, PrE uses a Menu Set, which is a pair of PSD (Photoshop's native Layered format) files, one for the Main Menu and one for Scene Selection Menu(s). Each has pre-made Buttons on them, and they cover most possibilities. Unused Buttons are deleted automatically, when one goes to actually author the Project. An example of this is the Previous and Next Buttons on the Scene Selection Menus. If one has enough Chapter Markers to need three Scene Selection Menus, the first one will not have a Previous Button, and only a Main Menu Button, as there is no "previous" Scene Selection Menu to navigate to. The second will have both a Previous and a Next Button. The last will only have the Previous Button, as there is no Next Scene Selection Menu to navigate to. This is done for you by PrE. That is why I am asking where you are seeing these elements.
Can you do a screen-cap, pointing to the elements in question? I only have PrE 4, and no Grid Menu Set. I do not know if PrE 7 had that Menu, or not, and it might be just available in PrE 8, which not everyone has. Point to the elements, so we can see what you are referring to.
    Thanks and good luck,

  • Accidently recorded 60i footage - how do I bring it into FCP? Help!

I have just found that I have filmed some of my work in 60i (using a Sony Z1) and some in 50i. I actually wanted it all in 50i (PAL) as I'm in the UK and naturally wanted the footage to be consistent.
The problem I have found now is, is that I can't bring in the 60i footage onto FCP. I'm connected up via Firewire, and am using a G5. I've tried changing the capture settings to NTSC, but no joy. All I actually get is audio, as the video preview is disabled. Naturally it plays fine on the Z1. I've also tried it on DSR-45, in which it also plays back fine on the monitor, but I can't get anything into FCP.
Do I need an NTSC firewire cable? Or do I need to get the footage transferred to PAL (50i)?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Make sure that your Z1U menu is set to play back NTSC 60i video or if you are using a player other than the Z1U make sure it is set to 60i NTSC output.
Create a new project in FCP with NTSC 60i settings and import the footage. Then export the new footage to Compressor and transcode to 50i.
BTW there is no such thing as an NTSC Firewire cable. The cables don't care what standard you use
    Good luck.

  • How to bring footage from my DVD into FCP

    Hi,
I REALLY need some help! I edited my film in FCP and burned in DVDSP, the same goes for the raw footage. They are both now on a DVD. My problem is that I let my friend borrow the raw footage tapes (bad mistake I know!) and now he cannot find the tapes. So I want to know if it is possible to take the raw footage back off the DVD without loosing any quality, and to bring it back into FCP? Thanks SO much for the help!

Without losing ANY quality? Sorry, quality was lost when you encoded for DVD. More quality will be lost when you rip the footage off the DVD, and more lost again when you encode again for DVD.
Sorry bud. Gotta press your friend more.

  • HELP PLZ Importing stereo sound into FCP brings it in mono and not linked!?

Hi, I am needing to import some sound which is stereo. On the flash card it came on I have channel 1 and channel 2...now being primarily a avid editor im used to selecting the both clips and it links together to make one when imported. I have found when I import these into FCP it brings them up as seperate mono tracks...I need them to be linked as i'll be doing multiclips for A and B cameras....
Also in my tracks section it says 2A for both audio tracks...Is there something im missing or I need to do in order to get it to work.
    Thanks for the help

Hi, could you be more specific? I have tried marking in points on both channels 1 + 2 at the clapper board...I then dropped them onto the sequence separately and then selected that...then did the Stereo pair thing...however its not doing it...what is it im doing wrong?
Sorry to be pain...its all a little alien to me at the moment...

  • Bring .mts (AVCHD) or .mov into FCP?

I have project files in .mts format and a duplicate set that is in .mov format.
    1) which set of files is best to bring into FCP for editing? I'm assuming by bringing in the .mts files, FCP is also applying a conversion to .mov anyway, so I should go with the .mov  instead of duplicating my effort?
    2) Does Log & Transfer of .mov files work the same way as .mts? or would I bring them in FCP differently?
    3) Can we bring the .mov files in at ProRes Proxy?
    4) When I want to uprez the proxy files, how does that work? Do I simply change the sequence setting to ProRes and rerender?
Lots of questions. Any direction, guidance, pointers to tutorials most appreciate. Thank you kindly.

Well first, you were smart to shoot progressive.  That means the scaling to Standard Def for the DVD should be fine.  Why not just bring them in as prores 422.  Drive space is cheap and you won't have to do the conform.  Only issue would be if you're system can't playback the prores smoothly, or if you need to do multiclips.  What computer do you have and what kind of storage?
Haven't worked with material from the camera, so hopefully someone else with greater experience will pipe up.
If no one does, post back and I'll give you my thoughts.

  • Motion 3 templates into M5

I want to bring in the Motion 3 templates into Motion 5.  Alas didn't bookmark prior reading.  I don't even care that they show up as templates within M5. (altho that would be nice.) I have 2 computers - one with M3 and one with M5.  Somehow a year ago I was able to bring over the entire CURVES Template folder from old computer onto new and can access it within Motion 5.  I have opened the Slider Template in M3 and saved as a Motion file and opened it in M5 and it worked.  I can open/save and will do so if that is the best way.
but how on earth did I get the entire Curves folder?  Where is it housed on my Mac running 10.7.5?
TIA for any help at all.

Motion 5 will open any Motion project back to at least version 2.0 (I've done it!)
The Curves folder and all the other basic Motion Templates from Motion 3 (and 4) are located in:
Root hard drive > Library > Application Support > Final Cut Studio > Motion > Templates.  Some of those templates have already been updated by Apple and are available with "Additional Content" in Motion 5 (Motion menu > Download Additional Content; examples: Skyline, Snap, Vine and a few others). A good number of the older templates are designed for standard def projects and will require adjustments to upgrade to HD (there's a method in Motion 5 to set up "Snapshots" to adapt projects to other aspect ratios, etc.)
All older Motion projects are "basic" Motion Projects. They can be turned into FCPX generators by selecting Publish Template and in the save/publish dialog, check the Publish as Final Cut Generator, then creating or selecting a Category and supplying the name.

  • IDVD Menu Capabilities

OK so I'm working on a somewhat complicated DVD project. I would like to create it in iDVD but I'm not sure if it's even capable of any of this, or if so, how to do it.
On the main menu I would like to have 4 buttons:
    1) Instructions: Plays an .avi file
    2) Play Video: Plays a series of 21 .avi files in a row
    3) Play Video from middle: Plays the .avi files from file 9 onward
    4) Chapters: Displays all 21 .avi files as separate chapters
I know how to do #1. Pretty straight forward.
#2 is more complicated. I'm not sure if you can play a series of files in a row like that just from the push of a button on the menu.
#3 adds on to #2 a bit because I want to still play these files in a row but leave out the first 8.
#4 is yet another variation of the other two because when I create a chapter menu if I add each of the files it will only play the one .avi file and not continue on to play the rest.
I'm sure iDVD isn't capable of all this but if there's a third party app that I could use or another DVD creator all together that would be great.

The simplest (because I'm pretty simple) way to do this would be to convert the avi files to quicktime files, using the converter download from Perian. Next, bring the converted projects into an app, such as imovie, and add 21 chapter markers to your joined project. That will take care of #2 and #4, as idvd will display both chapter markings and a "play all" option. #1 will take care of itself as a separate imovie file. #3 could be done again as a separate imovie project, beginning with your 9th file, with or without chapter markings.
Perhaps there's an easier way, but that's the way I know how to do it.
    Good luck.

  • Importing a Quicktime H.264 movie into FCP and DVD SP

    Hi,
I am curious why when I import a Quicktime H.264.MOV file into FCP it always makes me render (just the audio) when I place it on the timeline. Also when I try to import it into DVDSP it says that it is an incompatible file.
I know its an odd question, so don't ask me why I am doing it backwards.
Thanks to anyone that can help!
    Gary

    Hi David,
Thanks for your help. These projects are legal video stuff and I usually pause every hour and a half for about 10 minutes. (so I can put each segment on separate DVDs) I am feeding a video signal into a stand alone DVD writer AND into my Mac (I need to make a redundant recordings in case anything goes wrong). The problem with my stand alone DVD writer is to put in accurate chapter markers is a pain. Also it has a rather bland DVD setup menu which looks poor. So basically I am trying to take a video source from my camera and have it do the compression on the fly. I want to write my DVD in DVDSP because it has a ton of formatting options, and chapter markers are much easier to place.
Basically I am looking for the absolute quickest way to write a DVD without having to bring it into Compressor.
    Thanks again for your time!
    Gary
