British Dictionary in 10.6.4 not working

This issue began in the pages forum here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2533369&tstart=0
My new out of the box iMac upgraded to 10.6.4 was not recognising the British English Dictionary.
All settings in Language System preferences were correct with British English at the top of the list.
I installed a custom en_GB dictionary - no change.
I reinstalled SL from my 10.6.3 disk and all was okay both with and without the custom dictionary.
I upgraded to 10.6.4 broken again.
UK spellings are marked as incorrect, no suggestions are offered when right clicked.
Anyone else have this issue or a solution?
Thanks
M.

I had this problem on a new iMac (bought in UK), it just refused to understand British English, despite the language and text settings being correct. I used the OpenOffice OED workround as suggested here. But I have since narrowed down the problem, thanks to my old iMac - both were running 10.6.4 - the old one understood color as misspelt the new one didn't.
I compared the contents of the applespell.service (in Macintosh HD/system/library/services) - right click and show package contents then navigate to Contents/Resources/ and guess what the folders for en_AU.lproj, en_CA.lproj and en_GB.lproj were all missing! It would seem that the non-US English variants are stored in these folders, without them you just get US regardless.
So I copied the old full version to my new iMac (made a copy of the original service first just in case, and a backup), after a bit of fighting with the UI to convince it that I really did both want and have permission to replace the file, I rebooted and voila... British English spellings again without the OED workround.
At least so far it's worked for me... it looks like some Apple update (or the original new installation) had a version of the spell service without the extra resources....

  • Instructions for adding a word to spell dictionary in Pages for iPad not worki g

Instructions for adding a word to the spell dictionary in Pages for iPad say to double-tap the word. At that point you're supposed to be given the option to "define" the word, which I take to be adding it to the dictionary.
Double-tapping only gives me alternative spellings of the word. I don't get an option to define.
    What am I overlooking?
    Thanks,
    Eric Weir

    Not working for me, Demo.
Entering the words in settings would be cumbersome. I have a long document with many unfamiliar names and technical terms.
In Pages with spellcheck on unrecognized words are underlined in red. Tapping once highlights they word in a pinkish box. Tapping twice brings up a list of alternative words in a graphic display rather a text suggestion with option to dismiss. Tapping outside the suggestions graphic cancels it but does not seem to reject the suggestions, I.e., not in the sense that you are then given the option of accepting the word into the dictionary.
Help gives a procedure for doing this, but it does not work.
The document I'm working on is a finished document. No composition or editing required. I just need to get it formatted for publication. Most of the words another recognized by spellcheck, and there are many, need to be enter into the dictionary.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Dictionary and selecting words does not work for Japanese documents

iOS 5 includes both English and Japanese dictionaries. However, it seems that dictionary function does not work for Japanese PDF documents, nor can I select any Japanese words in Adobe Reader. Please fix this!

You can start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")<br />

  • ITunes Store Pages not working correctly

Since a few days ago iTunes Store (on full page) is not working correctly. The "pictures at the top" do NOT rotate any more (usually every 10 seconds or so before) often with blanks too. Also when clicking on an Lp information the box appears but Blank too. I have tried all the usual methods - permissions and disc checks etc. If I use small page (not full) it seems to work OK. The problem began after Safari 5 arrived. Anyone else having iTunes problems like this? (Similiarly the Dictionary Application with Wikipedia is not working correctly - but thats another issue!). Any answers out there??

This issue has now been completely resolved with the introduction of iTunes 9.2 Everything up and running again - thank you Apple! (Still an issue with Dictionary app/Wikipedia not functioning correctly, this has not been resolved)

  • The built-in dictionary on my iPad only works with certain sites.  What do I need to do so that I can it all the time. (For example, it does not work when I read e-newspaper.)

What do I need to do so that I can use the built-in dictionary all the time? My iPad 2's dictionary functions on Japanese e-newspapers but not on the Arizona Republic or other e-newspapers.

Are you talking about the English dictionary?  Mine seems to work ok on the AZ republic web page.  Does yours not work on all webpages?  Does it not work when you type an English word in Notes and then do select and define?

The iBooks dictionary works fine for my iPhone 5, but it does not work for my iPad 2. Is this fixable?

I went to the Audio store to see about getting a surround sound and the salesperson asked me why I wasn't using AirPlay, he said it was better than the Bluetooth, better quality. So I do have AirPlay on my Sony and I installed the app on my iPhone 5 but they can't find eachother.......when I try looking for my iPhone on my receiver it does not show it. The Sony display works through my TV, the set up screen is there but it says no devices found. Like I said, the Bluetooth finds the iPhone and works ok, but the AirPlay does not.....looking at the manuel it says that the AirPlay will recognize my device (iPhone 5) but it does not..........

  • Firefox English GB Dictionary not working, why not?

I had three dictionaries installed and working fine in conjunction with spellchecker in FF 19 - but having updated to FF 22.0 only English (United States) is included. I have added English-gb numerous times and done numerous reboots and or FF restarts but the English-gb is simply not an option when spelling check queries spelling. The English-gb dictionary shows up in my add-ons but it simply does not work. (the add-on is not disabled either).
Also adding words to a dictionary doesn't appear to work either and may be related.
To summerise: The English-gb dictionary is added as an active add-on but it does not work!
    Operating system Windows 7 Ultimate.

Try to disable all other extensions.
It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled or not compatible extensions in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left end side of the Search Bar ("Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.
If this hasn't helped then also delete the addons.sqlite file.
You can also try to delete the localstore.rdf file and the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

  • Why is the built-in Apple dictionary in IOS7 not working properly?

I've updated the system of my iPhone 4s to IOS 7.0 and I noticed there is a big change in the built-in dictionary. I touched the" manage" button and downloaded several dictionaries, however, I came across an issue that the Apple dictionary is not working properly. The definitions are just not there. The Oxford dictionaries are fine, but I miss the buitl-in Apple dictionary like the one in IOS6. Does anyone have the same issue?

I had constantly wondered about the same problem and today I've finally figured it out.
I thought 'Apple dictionary' had to be the same simple, built-in one in previous iOS versions,
but it's actually dictionary for Apple-related terms only, I guess.
    Kinda like Apple Encyclopedia?
Just try typing Mac and something and that 'Apple dictionary' will give you the definition of Mac, haha.
Wish I had thought of this earlier then I wouldn't have been this disappointed LOL

  • Preinstalled dictionary is not working on 808

Hi I was using Nokia's preinstalled dictionary from a long time but I update my phone on 14th feb afterthat it is not working.
The problem is that as I'm an Indian so I need Hindi support for some english words. But after that update in place of Hindi meaning it shows blocks. Please help me to solve this.

Same here with my Nokia 700. I guess this affects all Nokia Belle Feature Pack 2 devices:
    Nokia 808 PureView
    Nokia 701
    Nokia 700
    Nokia 603
    Preconditions:
    Nokia Belle Feature Pack 2
    install Hindi Dictionary
Nokia_Mobile_Dictionary_hi.SIS; certificate is valid till 25. Sep. 2013
    Nokia Belle » Menu » Dictionary » Options » Languages » Target » Hindi
Then I enter a word and I get brackets. Yours, as well?
    Not required:
Firmware variant (product code) which contains Hindi as language, because in Symbian Belle Refresh and Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1, the Hindi Dictionary works even with a phone sold in Europe (tested by myself and reported here)
    Workaround:
Not sure if installing Nokia Pure Font helps as reported here. I have not tried.
    Consequently, please, answer if:
Nokia Pure Font helped you, or
you do not face this issue, because your firmware comes with Hindi as phone language
