Broadband almost going backwards

I have been a customer with bt since the 8th August so not long at all. I had major problems with my account right from the word go and was reduced to tears until after a total of around six hours on the phone trying to get help, one person sorted my problem within minutes.
I have noticed that my connection keeps dropping out in the past few days and my speeds have seemed slow. Tonight, my speed has virtually ground to a halt and alot of sites will not load as it's taking so long.
I ran four speed tests using speediest.net app on my iPad and the maximum speed is about 0.18mbps. I am unable to do the bt speediest as the page just won't load, the connection just grinds to a halt.
I really don't know if I can face phoning bt again as last time I was reduced to tears big time. I don't know what to do. I really would like to cancel my service with them as it's been so problematic and I cannot cope with their call centres.
I'm going to try and get through to their head office tomorrow to see if I can get some agreement to terminate because I can't use the Internet properly at all.
Sorry for the rant, am just extremely fed up with such poor service from such a big company.
Alison

The reason for your disconnects is your Noise margin.  Its very low at 3dB.  This could be because it is the evening when the Noise Margin drops due to the amount of people online.. Do you know whether it is higher or not during the day?
Also can you tell me which type of master socket you have? and whether you're connected at it?
Edit as jcampy has advised the internal wiring, as standard, the bell wire should be taken out of any master or extension socket as this can reduce the amount of interference your broadband can pick up and sometimes fixes the problem, see how to remove it here http://bit.ly/4LEKJg
Also try a tidy up of your cable as per this users (RogerB) post : http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217
To rule out internal wiring if you have the first or second picture of the sockets then you need to unscrew the faceplate and plug into the test socket as shown on this diagram

  • SYSDATE is Going Backward

    Hi All,
    I am creating a very simple way to keep track the timing for my processing as the following; however, the timestamp is going backward, any clues?
    My Oracle version is 11g.
    PROCEDURE xyz
    IS
    l_timestamp VARCHAR2(100);
    BEGIN
       SELECT to_char(sysdate,  'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mm:ss') INTO l_timestamp FROM DUAL;
       INSERT INTO timetracking VALUES ('merging data',  l_timestamp);
       COMMIT;
       MERGE INTO ....;
       COMMIT;
       SELECT to_char(sysdate,  'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mm:ss') INTO l_timestamp FROM DUAL;
       INSERT INTO timetracking VALUES ('completed',  l_timestamp);
       COMMIT;
    END;
    the process completed around 30-40 mins, and the result from the timetracking table stored as:
    action                time
    ====               ====
    merging data      04/13/2012 14:04:57
    completed         04/13/2012 14:04:47     <==== What is going on here ????Any clues?

    Look at your format mask. Note the difference between 'mm' and 'mm'.I assume you meant "the difference between 'mm' and 'mi'"... Either that, or you're being very clever!
    user4184769 - What orafad is pointing out is that 'mm' gives you the month and 'mi' gives you the minutes. So if your format mask is 'yyyy/mm/dd hh24:mm:ss', you're getting the months where you logically expect the minutes. You almost certainly want 'hh24:mi:ss'.

  • I am transferring contacts from my old iphone to my new iphone 4. The screen has had 'restore in progress' on the screen for 20 hours now with time remaining going backwards. Is this normal? Should I let it go on?

    I am setting up my new iphone4 and am trying to transfer all of the contacts etc from my old iphone 3GS.After linking it with itunes the screen has shown 'restore in progress' for almost 24 hours with time remaining going backwards. Is this normal? Should I let it continue?

    No, that is not normal. I guess you are trying to restore from the latest backup created by your old 3GS?

    I am trying to uninstall itunes and at thepiont where I try to remove apple mobile device support it never completes the timer goes backwards?

    First try a repair install of Apple Mobile Device Support. If that goes through successfully, see if you can now uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support.
    If the Repair install doesn't help, try using the fixit from the following Microsoft document to remove Apple Mobile Device Support:

    I ran into this issue today and have not seen any posting regarding how to fix this in Linux, after using find and stat this is how you fix it....
    Within your fms directory their is a file named '. ' notice the extra spacing at the end, or follow this example.
    [root@xxx fms]# stat .*

    Change: 2011-03-23 16:59:26.000000000 -0400
    Notice that the directory has a newer timestamp, and the file has a timestamp in the future due to adjusting the system clock.
    Simply stop fms, mv the file, and start fms, tail -f your master.00.log file to confirm things start without a clock error.
    service fms stop && mv '.        '  test && service fms start

  • Broadband connection going up and down like a yo-y...

    Hello,
    I see many people have had very similar problems but can't really find a good solution through browsing the forum. So I'll put some data here and let's see if somebody has good ideas.
    - Victorian terrace so old cabling, phone line works all the time, quiet line test normall (hum with cordless phone).
    - BTHomeHub2 always shows blue broadband icon even when there is no connection. Connected via ADSL filter to the main socket, which to me seems to include NTE5. Connecting to test socket makes no difference.
    - Loose connection all the time, often (but not always) resetting HomeHub helps for some 30min-2hours and then goes down again. At the moment seems to be mostly down. Loosing connection in practice means that none of my computers have IP addresses.
    - I have computers connected via Ethernet and WiFi, latter does not seem to be causing the issue as when the problem is there, Ethernet connected computers have it too (no IP address).
    - Linestats, speedtest and diagnostic test attached, these all taken at a time when it was working. When it isn't working, my computer doesn't have an IP address so to my knowledge I couldn't access these tools anyway.
    Does this give a hint what might be the issue?
    When I looked at this helpful site http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm , paragraph BT's fixed rate limitations seems to imply that I should be running fixed 1 Mbps rather than trying to get anything higher. Would that be the reason? No idea how you would go to that lower fixed rate anyway.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From looking at your router stats it looks like you are in a banded profile due to all the resets as you tried to get a better connection - everytime you reset tge speed keeps coming back to 4544. If you continue with the resets your banding will deepen and your connection speed will go lower and your noise margin higher. You need a stable connection
    are you currently connected to the test socket
    http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/broadband_terminology.shtml
    there are problems with the older hh2 and it may be you try and get CS to replace your hub.  Provided you are in contract it should be free

  • My counter's going backwards?

    Hey,
    I have been trying to create a 3-bit binary counter for a project and nothing seems to be going right. In fact it needs to be a divide by 6 counter, but I'll worry about that later.
    At the moment I have the design, but it likes to count backwards instead of forwards. I'm sure it will be quite simple, but I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong.
    Thanks for any help you can give, I have attached the circuit below.

    Alrighty, I got it. I am going to post the schematic for you to examine. What I did was to look at the component information in the component properties dialog box. After examining the truth table for the IC I found that in order to reset them that CLR had to be low and PRE had to be high. In the original circuit when I tied all these to high all three LEDs came on indicating that all the Q outputs were coming up defaulted high. My thought process that if I leave PRE High and take the Q ouputs and invert them and feed that back to CLR then a reset could be accomplished. Since all three of them were high this indicated that binary 7 was being displayed. How to reset this after 6? I tried tying in a nand gate to the outputs of the last 2 thinking that it would display 6 and then reset. That was wrong. It counted to 5 and then reset on 6. This clued me in on what needed to be done. If it was reseting on the number you selected then in order to display the number you selected then you need to reset after that number which in this case would be 7. I then tied a 3 input nand gate to all outputs and now it will count to six and reset them on 7. This will allso automatically reset them to zero on power up.
    I hope this helps. Here is the completed circuit:

  • Broadband keeps going off

    Hello
    Glad I have found this site, as I have been having so much trouble with BT Broadband.
    Have reported it so many times approx a dozen if not more, had a engineer who found four faults.
    Basically still the same problem, broadband goes off, this happens up to twenty times a day, have started keeping a diary.
    also Vision box freezes then goes off.
    I feel we are paying for a service, we are not receiving, and which we have not been for months.
    everytime we phone up, they say they can not find the problem.
    Contract comes to a end in march, and i wish to leave, infact would like to leave now,as it has become infuriating.
    Does anyone else have this problem with BT,?
    Thank-You

    welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
    in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) bt speedtester and post the results .
    are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
    Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
    Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Read next or previous text messages w/o going backward?

    In Mail, when you open a message there are two triangles at the top right that allows one to easily navigate to next or previous messages.
    However, in Messages, when you open an SMS text message, these navigation triangles are absent. In order to go to a next or previous message, one must hit the Messages button at the top left and go backward, select a new message. Then repeat over and over again if one wishes to navigate thru multiple messages.
    This is ********.
    Is there a hidden way to navigate to next and previous text messages? Or is there an app that adds this functionality?
    If not, then Apple needs to add this seemingly simple navigation feature ASAP.

    I believe you are talking about navigating between different SMS conversations since the iPhone's messages app is in conversation format by each contact that you exchange messages with similar to an instant messenger client.
    There is no option to navigate from one conversation to another from within an existing conversation, and there is no 3rd party app that provides for this and doubtful there will be. Such an option must be provided by Apple.
    You can use this link to provide Apple feedback.

  • TYPING PROBLEM CURSOR GOING BACKWARDS

    Since I have installed Yosemite, I have a cursor problem when typing e-mails (only e-mails). When I type an ' like in the word L'IMAGE, my cursor goes back automatically to the letter just after the ' when I am at the end of the word this means instead of typing " l'image parle" it will type "l'iparlemage"
    Slightly similar problem with 's in English, the cursor goes back to just after the ' as if not willing to insert a blank. It means I wish to type "Daddy's car" , it types: "Daddy'scar".
    This is really boring!
    Who could help?
    Best regards

    I have found a solution: in Mac SYSTEM PREFERENCES, choose the keyboard icon and there go to TEXT and de-activate the spelling.
    This has enabled me to go to MAIL, then EDIT on the top line, chose SUBSTITUTION and exclude SMART QUOTES.

  • Song order goes backwards

    Hello!
    So when I click on an album, the song order starts from where i tap and goes to the track BEFORE. I have the latest iPod touch and the latest iTunes. I just backed up my iPod and then restored my backup before this happened. Now its happening.
    OR
    I start with a track (one in the middle, like the 4th song), the next song that plays is the track before (in the same album), then it keeps going back to the first track!
    This is the strangest thing that has ever happened.... PLEASE HELP
    Thank you!

    *@ docsholl* Random or alpahbetical??? I ask becuase I find that if you choose an album via *Search > Artist > Album* you get the tracks in alphabetcial order instead of track order.
    In general iTunes is slightly more liberal when it comes to spelling than the iPod. In some cases differences in case between one entry and the next can be responsible for the iPod seeing the same tracks in a different order. Disk No. & No. of disks may also affect things. For a given album the following terms should all have exactly the same values. Album Title, Artist (except for Compilations), No. of Tracks, No. of Discs. & Part of a Compilation. The Sort Artist & Sort Album fields take precedence over Artist & Album and if used should either have the same values for all tracks, or match with the existing values for Artist & Album on other tracks. (This aspect can sometimes be used to make "Artist Feat. Guest" group properly with other tracks by "Artist". as iPod firmware to date has failed to use Album Artist for this purpose.)
    Normally selecting all the tracks from the album and retyping the Album, Artist & Album Artist info. is enough to fix this issue, although once I had some weird extended character that refused to be replaced in certain tracks. In this case the answer was simply to add some random info into each field, e.g. add XXX onto each value, apply the changes, then remove the excess text & reapply.

  • The iPhone time goes backwards: a time warp maybe?

    I’m developing an iPhone application which logs GPS data in a SQLite DB, including their timestamps.
    When I’m running the application while I’m stationary, the timestamps are exactly what you’d expect, i.e., they matches the actual time shown by a wall clock, and sequential samples have increasing times.
    However, when I run the application in a moving car, I notice that every 5-10 minutes or so the timestamp jumps back in time, sometimes by as much as 30 seconds.
    For example, I might have a GPS reading with a timestamp of, say, today at 10:10:30, and the next GPS reading would have a timestamp of 10:10:01. After this happens, subsequent samples are well behaved (time is increasing), until after another 5-10 minutes when the time resets back again.
    To check whether this problem is only related to the GPS, I started writing in the SQLite DB also the actual time [NSDate date] in which the location manager reports a new point. This time almost equals the GPS sample’s timestamp (within a few mS), and is also subject to the same occasional reset back of 10-30 seconds.
    Has anyone seen this? Could it be a result of synching the iPhone time to that of cells along the way? If so, aren’t cells supposed to be synchronized to an atomic clock? If indeed it’s the time difference between cells, why wouldn’t the iPhone sync with the GPS time, which is atomic?
    Does anyone know how to solve this, i.e., having monotonically increasing timestamps?

    Thanks a lot Learning Annex Certified, that solved my problem.
    Indeed machabsolutetime() is available on the iPhone, and seems to be the only reliable way to tell the time difference between two subsequent GPS readings. One should not reply on the samples’ timestamps, because from time to time subsequent timestamps go back in time as described in my first post above.
    Caveat: the timestamp provided by the Location Manager is supposed to be the exact time in which the sample was taken. When one uses machabsolutetime() when a new point is available, there’s a small delay between the sample and the call of locationManager:didUpdateToLocation:fromLocation:, but hopefully the variance in the delay is small so the delta time between two samples is accurate.
    Now, if only machabsolutetime() would have been available on Win98.

  • System.currentTimeMillis() going backwards!!!

    Hi,
    The following program runs a loop, each iteration measuring the time, and ensuring the new time is later than the last measured time.
    I run it like this:
    java -cp . Test 500 1
    My JVM is this:
    ahl84:/nfs/ahl16/users/is/djepson/work/backwards $ java -version
    java version "1.3.1.01-release"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1.01-release-010816-12:37)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.3.1 1.3.1.01-release-010816-13:34-PA_RISC2.0 PA2.0, mixed mode)
    On one of our production machines, this program actually reaches the ERROR line - i.e. time is SEEN to go backwards.
    The problem also happens (although less frequently if I use a 0 for the sleep value - i.e. I am not forcing rescheduling on the main thread.
    Please, anyone any ideas???
    The machine in question has 2 CPUs if thats any help, but I can run it on other multi-CPU machines, seemingly without problem.

    I think You may be running into an os/hardware problem. The
    System.currentTimeMillis() returns the number of milli secs since
    sometime in 1970. However the actual resolution of it depends on the operating system and hardware. Its possible that the thread is being
    allcoated to different procs on your machine (after sleeps especially
    and sometimes anyway) and the OS call used by java returns different
    values.
    for some reason I have a hunch that this isn't a java problem as such.
    maybe os/ maybe hardware/ maybe interation of java with both.
    try forcing the VM to run on one processor only.

  • N97 - Nokia going backwards!!

    Few irritating things I have found with the N97 that the N95 8gb could do!!!
    I can not edit the label of a contact, i.e putting in "personal" mobile. Small but irritating,esp. after I'd synced the N97 with my N95 8gb but found it had put all mobile contact's down as "Business".
    I NEVER use the Qwerty keyboard (like the idea but just don't use it - yet) and find it very frustrating that when browsing the web I can not turn the phone and browse in landscape something a software update solved for the N95 8gb. Even before the update you could go in to options and rotate the screen something the N97 doesn't! Why would I want to walk around with the screen tilted up, it makes it harder to touch the screen, balance in hand holding bag getting knocked by rush hour commuters!
    Getting used to the touch screen but having use of an iphone get irritated with the double click and just feels stiffer when trying to navigate, as in you have to be more positive with your touch which then means you go in to the app instead of scrolling up and down the screen, but as said getting the hang of it.
    Having troubles with the wap, it won't work and the internet works, then doesn't, then does etc but I'm thinking this is a network problem than a Mobile problem.

    It is obvious that Nokia is trying to copy Apple's iPhone marketing strategy.
