Broadband gone very slow

Hi Normally we get 6.5mbps as a minimum buta couple of weeks ago this dropped down to 1meg. A fault was logged with BT and the helpful guy on the other end of the phone thought he could see a problem and handed over to the engineers.
Engineer came out just over a week ago, checked the internal wiring, found no issues, moved on the the green cabinet (20metres from the house) and then was going to check the exchange (<0.5 miles from the house). Never heard from him again but the connection speed improved vastly and we were even getting a little faster than the 6.5meg we normally got.
Today we're getting 1216kbps download and 332kbps upload. 332kbps upload is normal, but what is happening to the download speed?

Speedtester refuses to test my speed saying there is an error at this time but using other speedtesters im only getting between 150-200kb download speed but getting my normal 902kb upload. Usually my speed is always about 9000-10000kb.
Is there a problem in the 0208 Essex area as two of my friends withing a mile away have the same broadband package as me also have the same speed problem??

  • Safari has gone very slow

    Hi there
I have an iPod touch and have found that safari has gone really slow. It takes ages to load the page and zoom in and out also scrolling up and down. It al started when I let my kids aged 11 and 9 used it.  They where not as careful as me when using it but I was supervising and they did not drop it or anything. I have rebooted it then reset it to factory settings in iTunes. I have taken off the apps that they put on there but it made no difference. It has been fine since ios 4 update came out so it had nothing to do with that. I always thought that safari was quite quick but now its unusable on some sites, manly sites with moving images. It is like there is not enough ram any more. I know its not the modem as the two computers that i have are just the same, pretty good and there both using safari. Its strange as my mobile phone with android did the same thing about 6 months ago and nether improved. The phone does it on any wifi and mobile network, so again it cant be the modem. Is there any thing I can do with the ipod to speed safari up, or is that it I cant use safari any more and use opera instead?
    Thanks for any help

    thanks both for the repliy
I now its not the network as its fine with everything else. Also I have already tried restoring the ipod with itunes and that didn't make any difference. I have now reset it like you said but that didn't work. Not sure what to do now maybe safari just want work like it use to. I forgot to say it is a second gen ipod touch so it is quite old now.
Any more help I would be very thankful for.

  • Broadband Always Very Slow

My broadband has always been very slow since we moved into our house 3 years agao. I had hoped it would improve through time but to no avail.
We are in a rural location which I am guessing is the problem but it is very frustrating. We cannot even stream audio files.
Is there anything we can do and I dont mean all the usual stuff we have tried all that and had a line spun to us from BT that they were doing things to help.

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
this may be the usual stuff again but in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Broadband speed very slow (again)

My broadband speed has been very slow for the past week or so, very hard to stream videos, download etc. Broadband download speed is normally around 7-8mbps mark and has been around 1-2 or lower this past week.
    Speed test..
ADSL stats (I think a housemate must have reset the router 2 days ago)..
There are no problems reported at my local exchange.
I already had this same problem in January. It was fixed for a while but now it is really slow again.. https://community.bt.com/t5/ADSL-Copper-Broadband-Speed/Speed-way-way-down-on-normal/td-p/1149716

this is not the same as last time.. last time your speed was down at about 2mb wheras this time you have 11mb connection.
can you run btspeedtester again with wired connection and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results

  • BB gone very slow ...help please

I live in a rural area, am about 3 miles from the exchange, so I'm used to not having a fast service, however my speed often runs around 1.22Mb/s download and 0.38Mb/s upload. But yesterday it dropped to very slow. I just decided to leave it for 24 hours to see if it sorted itself out. Well it didn't and I'm here now looking for some help please!
I have checked my local exchange, no problems reported.
I have worked through the BT BB Speed Wizard thing.
I did the Speedtester and these are the results

  • Upgraded to iMac - broadband now very slow

I'm hoping someone can help me here, as I'm really stuck on what the problem could be. I've recently upgraded from a Mac Mini to a 2008 20 Inch 2.4 GHz iMac. They were both on Snow Leopard, the upgrade went well and I used migration assistant to transfer across my files and settings.
Then I noticed that my broadband speed seemed slow. I thought this was probably just an ISP glitch, but today it was slow enough that I bothered to check more thoroughly - and it turns out it's the iMac that's slow. A broadband speed check I ran on my MacBook (1.83 GHz Core duo, so theoretically a slower machine in general) gave a result of over 10 Mbps. The iMac could only manage 1 Mbps. That's a tenfold difference! A check on iStumblr - again, with the machines right next to each other - shows a 10% difference in signal.
It's clearly not my wi-fi, or distance from the router (I have a full signal on the Airport icon, and I ran the speed test with my MacBook literally right next to my iMac). Could it be some settings that the iMac inherited from the Mac Mini, or does the iMac just basically have lousy wifi?
My office is too far from my router to realistically use a wired connection, so I'd really like to get this sorted if I can. Thanks for any help!

I've recently been having the same problem on my iMac as well. My MacBook Pro is testing much higher as far as broadband speeds. At one point, my iMac was running slower than dial up. I found that restarting temporarily improves speed, but lag often recurs. I have deleted the folder as described in the previous post and changed the channel on my router which has seemed to help. I was just wondering if anyone has any insight as to what might be going on with my iMac.

  • Broadband becomes very slow all of a sudden

Hi I've been with BT for a quite a while now and i'm happy with the service they provide until now.
Ok so I started out with BT Total Broadband Option 1 and then gradually moved to Option 2 and now 3 I had all the Home Hubs V1 and V2 and currently with V2 at the moment.
Now I usually use www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net for checking speeds and I had a nice grade B on the ping test and a steady 6Mbps on my speed test.
However yesterday I was playing a few games on the PS3 when I noticed my NAT Type had changed to Strict, restricting me to access online play so I reset the Home Hub and that fixed that.
So I did test speed and ping tests and noticed that my ping had went all the way from 50-60ms to 300-500ms causing extreme lag in online gameplay, so then I did a test in speed and now it suddenly has gone down to ~1Mbps.
I did absolutely nothing it just changed by itself. Now I noticed something odd on the speed test, it stated that my telephone exchange was in Scotland(I'm in Northern Ireland so its perfect and the closest I can get to it) however it now states that my telephone exchange is now in London.
Would that have something to do with the speed and ping becoming high and slow?

    Hi EnZeeO,
Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like your speed has dropped quite dramatically.  Can you please run a speed test via www.speedtester.bt.com, this will give us a look at your IP profile.
Please also drop me an email to [email protected], include your BT account details and the link to this thread, I will run some checks from my end to see what has happened.
    Cheers

  • BT Broadband suddenly very slow on Mac OS X 10.5.8

    Hello,
I'm posting on behalf of my dad as his broadband is now so slow as to be almost unusable. He lives in the Suffolk countryside but should still be able to receive broadband speeds of up to at least 1.5mb/s on his local exchange. His BT broadband service has never been brilliant but has recently slowed right down. He has an iMac 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.5.8. He has tried upgrading to a BT Home 3.0 router but this has not improved his broadband speed. I have tried to run the BT speedtester but I can't get it to work because it says Java is not installed despite it appearing to be enabled as a plugin. I have tried this in both Safari and Firefox. I have asked him to try the speedtester available on the uSwitch website which has recorded a download speed of only 0.2 and upload of 0.1mb/s.  I would be very greatful if anyone has any suggestions as I am going to visit him tomorrow. I intend to try plugging the hub directly into the main socket via a microfilter. I also plan to try upgrading his operating system to snow leopard but I doubt that this will improve his connection. The quality of the phone line seems to have decreased recently too.  Is my only option to try ringing BT customer services?
    Thank-you!

    Hello,
Have upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.3 and now able to run BT speedtester:
    Also here are hub stats:
    Ran Uswitch speed tester again:
This suggests that we should be able to get up to 2.5Mb on this exchange.
Have tried quiet line test, line is not silent, there is low level interference on wire connected handset. Have tried connecting hub directly to master socket which has given a slight improvement in performance but still to my mind unacceptably slow. Could not repeat BT speedtest as limited to one test per hour. Ran Uswitch test again:
I know that he has just changed from Hub 2 to Hub 3 and it will take time to settle but broadband speed had already declined notably (to the point of being barely usable) on Hub2 before switching to Hub3.
    Any further advice gratefully received....

  • Broadband Suddenly Very Slow

    Hey guys,
So I woke up today to find out that the connection was insanely slow, first I just assumed that other people in the house were downloading things and using up the majority of the bandwidth, but nope. I checked on SpeedTest and it was only giving me a speed of 240 (or so) kbps, my upload speed was higher than my download speed (???!).
    I used the bt test site and it gave me this as a result;
Why has the IP profile showing 250kbps when we're supposed to be getting 2mb?
Do you guys need any other information to get this sorted? 250kbps really isn't enough for a family..2mb isn't even enough these days.
I really hate to be one of these people (since I work for customer services)...but seriously, ever since we joined BT it's been nothing but problems.

with your attenuation on a good line with no noise problem should expect about 3/3.5mb.  the resets have increased your noise margin to 9.6 from normal 6 which has inturn dropped youe speed.  this has also caused your profile to drop
one of the worst things you can do to your conenction is to constantly reset the hub.
are you connected wire or wireless?

  • Unlimited broadband speed VERY slow (less than 25k...

When we first got setup around 6 weeks ago the broadband was fine but we had some noise on the phone line which we was told would settle down. - it did then got progressively worse and eventually the phone stopped working all together while the bt router continually lost connection to the broadband. After chasing BT for over 2 weeks we finally had an engineer out who found the phone line problem (previous engineer pinched two wires together causing it to burn out and short the circuit). we was told the broadband speed should pick back up after 3 or 4 days....today has been 5 days and doing a speedtest reveals my download speed to be (on average) 22kb/s with an upload speed of 15kb/s. Web pages take FOREVER to load and anything beyond text you may aswell give up waiting for. Just 6 weeks ago when shiny and new we was getting over 9mb/s - nothing changed internally the setup is all the same just the phone line issue.
Is there ANYTHING i can do to speed this process up? I'm quite put off after the experience i have had with BT services so far and the support have been hopeless.
Heres hoping someone has some ideas!
