Broadband internet access away from home (powerbook G4)
I've cracked this when I stay with friends who have macs, but how do I go about it when I visit those with pcs? What do I do in Network Prefs, and do I need a special cable?
Depending on what service your friends have.
In System Preferences and NETWORK, You simply choose your method of connection, Wireless, Ethernet< or Internal Modem(Dial-Up).
Next many Internet Services require authentication and you need to check with your friends to see if this is the case with there connection, If not then you will just fire that baby up and log on.
Be sure you check with your friends, and make sure there isn't anything special you need to log on with.

Having trouble with connectivity, no internet connection away from home
Having trouble with connectivity, no internet connection away from home, can't check Facebook, weather, scores.......
if you don't have a dataplan and rely on wifi for internet that is how it works
if you do have a dataplan it sounds like it's not set up correctly in which case you should contact your carrier -
Internet connection away from home
how do I connect wirelessly when away from home? I see people at airports sing the net, also at starbucks etc. but I can not get a signal. I am using 2 wire wireless to connect at home with no problems. Any help appreciated.
MikeAll you really need to do is have the Airport displayed on your menu bar, and when there is signal you will see the bars as being black rather than grey. You can click on the icon to list networks to attempt to connect to - if they're open you'll have no problems.

HT1976 iPhone 5 has suddenly stopped connecting to the internet away from home
My iPhone 5 has suddenly stopped connecting to the internet when away from home. It was fine last Wednesday, then on Thursday all I got was 'Safari is no longer connected to the internet'. I cannot use the Messaging, Find my Friends etc.
As far as I know I have not done anything to alter any settings, but I did change my password on Wednesday - which works, so I think that's OK.
Has anyone any idea what is happening?
ictoauHello, ictoau.
Thank you for the question. You may find this article helpful in troubleshooting the carrier data connection issue you are experiencing.

Using iphone with macbook air to access internet away from home
Can I use the iphone as a dongle to access internet on Macbook air. I find using the iphone fiddly and would prefer the laptop when away from home.
You can, but you have to pay an additional fee to AT&T. I think it's about $20/month for tethering.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Yesterday, I suddenly lost the ability to access email and Internet on my I-phone when I'm away from home (where we have Wifi). Is there a simple way to fix this? I have gone into Settings and can't figure out what to do.
if you're away from how do you access data? through your network? check if you turned off your data. Go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>NETWORK
turn on Cellular Data if it's OFF
3G should also be ON for faster access. -
Can no longer access ESPN3 away from home
After setting up the remote access feature, I used to be able to access espn3 away from home, but can no longer do so. When I select an event to watch, I see the prompt to select internet service provider and then continue. I then receive a login error message from AT&T. I just tried the same thing using my wife's laptop and it works just fine, so there is something not quite right on my computer. Any ideas of what to look for to fix this?
Thanks in advanceBump.....still looking for some help if anyone has some ideas. Even after the upgrade to Lion, still have the same problem.

Hi. I have temporarily moved away from home. I am using a different internet connection, and I have lost my bookmarks. How do I get them back?
Generally speaking, your bookmarks are private to your computer, and if you set up multiple Firefox profiles on your computer, to the one profile.
Your bookmarks might be available to you at another location if you used the Sync service. In order to connect a new computer to the Sync service when you aren't near your old computer, you need a recovery key. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/share-bookmarks-tabs-and-more-your-other-computers#w_what-if-im-not-near-my-first-computer
If you didn't use Sync or can't access your account, someone with access to your old computer could email you your bookmarks. Since there is a range of different ways to do that and the best choice might depend on what you can expect the person you ask to be able to do... could they start up Firefox in your profile and follow menu steps to export a file? Could they drill down into a hidden folder on the system, zip a file, and mail that to you? Etc. -
Accessing WD home NAS whilst away from home
I am trying to find out about step by step guides on how to access my WD World Edition II NAS whilst away from home without using Mionet. I am reasonably technical but a novice at networking. I have an O2 broadband router with the drive connected to it. I have looked around for help but it seems to get very complicated very quickly. Do I need to change the settings on my router etc. Any help would be great.
Thanks@Teejay74 - make update for your firmware with latest one, WD replaced the Mionet for the wd2go.com, a WD tool that makes the share really easy and secure. Now with this tool you can share images from your NAS to your iPad/iPhone/Android , and on this last update you can connect from anywhere to you NAS with wd2go.

Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?
Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?
What I currently have:
Late-2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 (OSX Mavericks 10.9.5)
2.5ghz Intel i7 quad-core
16gb RAM, 1024gb SSD raid-0 (internal)
Connecting to the internet through:
Apple Time Capsule 2TB (via ethernet)
+
Time Warner Cable "Ultimate 100" (top speed)
I would basically like to be able to have my MacBook Pro on *at home* and connected to the internet via ethernet to the Apple Time Capsule.. and then be able to somehow connect and log in to my MacBook Pro, either through another computer or preferably, my iPhone 5s..
Mostly just interested in having accessibility to be able to make downloads, such as magnet links, while away from the computer.. and basically be able to come home to mostly finished or complete downloads.. Basically like how you can DVR/TiVo things from your iPhone and have it sync with your DVR/TiVo while away from home..
Is this possible? Thank you!!Yes you can do this.
I would suggest you start with TeamViewer.com (free for personal use).
You will need to install TeamViewer on your Mac AND your iPhone.
The Mac version will need to be configured for unattended remote access. You should practice before you leave the home.
There are other iPhone apps that can remotely access a Mac. A lot depends on whether they can get past the home NAT router. Be careful of apps that provide VNC access, but do not provide a way to get past the home router. If you try one of these, make sure you test it away from your home WiFi network. -
How can i access my PowerMac when i am away from home?
Hi, I have a powermac G5 at home and have just bought a mac book pro. is there any way to set them up so i can access the powermac when i am out traveling with my mac book? I guess i would need to leave the powermac on all the time, but how do i get the two connected? i have far to many files to use iDisc and i have a lot of extra drives attached to the powermac at home.
Any chance the answers could be simple!!! I'm relatively new to macs and know almost nothing about accessing computes over the internet.
thanks for your help.
martinHi Martin,
I am just implementing something which may be of interest to you.
I have a home network of a G5 Quad and several PCs which I wanted to be able to access, securely while I was away from home. (Using a XP laptop).
I have just purchased a LinkSys RVL200 VPN router and ASDL modem and after a fair amount of trial and error managed to get it working to my ISP, British Telecom.
Effectively I can now connect my laptop from anywhere on the internet and it is as if I am sat on home with it connected to my local network. Most importantly it runs via an https: tunnel (may not be the correct phrase) so it is secure.
To connect all I have to do is go to my IP address via the browser using https://, logon on and it creates a connection through which I can access my Mac and PCs. Once the connection is in place then I can run any application on my laptop and it connects fine. (Last night I tested it running ftp to my G5 which is hidden behind the firewall.)
The only thing I am not sure about is how it would connect using a Mac rather than an XP machine (the secure connect icon appears in the tray) but if it fits what you are looking for I'm sure LinkSys could advise on whether it would work.

TS1398 How do I connect to the internet with my iphone when away from home
I have an iphone 3GS which was fine , was able to connect to the internet away from home when at uni, at appointments. Since software update to IOS 6.0, can now only connect to internet wirelessly when at home-as soon as leave the house it disconnects. Is this just because of the software update? Have tried adjusting settings but got nowhere. Thank you
When your wifi is off. Do you see your carrier name at the top left with either 3G/4G. If not you can try a reset, hold down the home/power button until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
or settings - cellular - cellular data - ON
if those two suggestion doesn't help then you will need to contact your phone carrier to resolve the issue. -
the job takes me away from home and at times I need information stored on the iMac. I would like to access the main computer and its files through a second computer, Mac Pro. Is there a service that will allow me to access my main computer when I'm traveling? For example if I'm in Brasil and need to access files found in my main computer in Canada, what reliable allows me to connect between the 2 computers?
