  • Hi my late 2008 model Mac Book Pro has gotten really slow and has made a loud noise twice in the last month.

My Macbook is not acting right it has gotten very sluggish online and has made a really loud buzz or screaching sound twice  in the last month.  The first time I was just on the internet and it wouldn't quit making the loud noise until I turned it off and back on.  This last time it made it while restarting it or was in the process of restarting from updating and while it was still a black screen it made that noise but stoped on its own this time.  I have no idea what to check in Macs or where to looks for errors or problems.  If someone could please direct me in what I can check to see if there is any info on what may be problemactic on my computer.  Thank you. Laurie

Thank you ds store for replying.  Not to sound ignorant but I am when it comes time to this...how do I upgrade to 10.6?  I also think I have all the ram installed I can on it.  This is what system profiler shows in memory.

Also the link you profided is this what the update to 10.6 will provide?  I really didn't understand the tech language so I didn't understand what it was telling me.  I am sorry to be so inept on this.  I just had to have the battery replaced about a month ago and while in the store I was asking the tech to check all the error messages and make sure everything was OK because I had no clue what they meant or if I had any problems.  I just use it I guess you would say.  The tech said I didn't need to worry about any of that stuff that Mac's don't get viruses and I was fine.  Well that didn't answer checking for hardware problems or anything like that but he didn't have anything else to say about it.

  • IPod touch is REALLY slow to load and won't connect to iTunes on the PC

I have an iPod touch that won't connect to my iTunes account anymore.  It is also really really slow to load.  I have powered it down and back up and it is still really slow.  Has anyone else experienced this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Safari has got really slow..

    Hi
Over the past few weeks I've noticed Safari (2.0.4) has got really slow at both finding and loading web pages.
I know it's not my connection as when I open the same page in Flock or FF it's really fast.
I've emptied Safari's cache but it's made no difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Roger
Over the past few weeks I've noticed Safari (2.0.4) has got really slow at both finding and loading web pages.
I know it's not my connection as when I open the same page in Flock or FF it's really fast.
I've emptied Safari's cache but it's made no difference.
Here's a list of basics I recommend when Safari slows down:
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
     HD/Users/Home/Your_Name/Library/Safari/Icons
    * Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
    3. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Also the power to support the modem. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
For slow opening, I'd recommend checking your Font Book application for duplicate fonts (the ones with the little bullets next to them). If you find any, select them one at a time, go up to the Edit menu, and click on "Resolve Duplicates.
** I see that you are using a Powerbook. When you shut it down overnights than run MacJanitor. This a special script developed for Powerbook, iBook, Laptop etc ... users.

  • Really Slow Broadband Following Return From Holida...

I've just returned from nearly three weeks holiday. Before I went away my broadband was working fine. Not mega fast but to an acceptable level. Whilst away I completely powered off my computer and Home Hub. Since returning my broadband speed has gone really slow. Over the last three evenings I've run the Speed Test and have had the following reults.
    14/5/11 - 18:30 - Download Speed 72kbps, DSL U/S - 256kbps  - D/S 448kbps,  IP Profile 135kbps
    15/5/11 - 18:53 - Download Speed 83kbps, DSL U/S - 256kbps  - D/S 448kbps,  IP Profile 135kbps
    16/5/11 - 19:36 - Download Speed 92kbps, DSL U/S - 1280kbps  - D/S 448kbps,  IP Profile 135kbps
None of my equipment or wiring has changed. It's exactly the same as before I went away. I've also got a BT accelerator fitted to the socket.
Any ideas whats gone wrong and what I can do about it.  I'm sure it was faster than this when I was on Dial-up.

the crc up errors are a bug in the firmware.
you have a good 8mb connection with the correct 7150 profile.  the problem is your throughput/download which is rubbish.

Ok for some reason after updating from one of the software updates for mountain lion, iTunes has now become really slow! Also if you know what's wrong, please help me as I can't do anything whilst iTunes is syncing my iPhone and iPad. Thanks.

  • Broadband REALLY REALLY SLOW.

    Hello fellow BT users.
I have had BT Broadband (Unlimited) since 2007, it NEVER was brilliant, we received some slow downs, disconnections, the usual for most BT users so it seems (from what I've read on here)
Anyway, it seems that the broadband has got far worse in the last month... The speeds are unbearable. I can't even play any of my games on Steam at the moment, neither can I properly play on the xbox 360 as the connection either drops.. or it lags like crazy. Even browsing my everyday sites is a drag... I get lots of time-outs on pages loading or it could take over a minute for the page to load.
Downloading.... ufft.. where DO I start!?! As most PC gamers should know, there is a BIG Steam sale currently going on, lots of games ALL for great prices, so this is the time of year where I usually buy lots of games. This year I've saved myself the hassle & just bought Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, which I can barely download over 70kb/s (Which isn't much of a difference but still sad as usually it downloads @ 150 - 200 kb/s, even that is quite bad.)
Anyway, is there a way to sort it out? Not calling BT support, they are incredibly troublesome and can even make the situation far worse than it already is... no offence.

I think I just found it
    Sorry for the late reply

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.

  • My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do?

My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do? I did install a cannon printer upgrade and security upgrade. Not sure if it was something to do with that. Also I tried the disk utility repair and didn't improve anything. I also reset PRAM and SMC.

    1. Try booting in e Verbose mode - press and hold [cmd] + [v] keys just right after the boot chord sounds till you get a black screen and white letters.
if there are some delays in the boot process  -  you should see where the system is stuck.
this mode is not permanent - the next [re-] boot will be normal.
    2. repair permissions. disk utility does fine. Disk Warrior is better.
sometimes after half done updates (it may happen though should not) there are items that are "belonging to someone else"
    3. try  cache cleaner (or there are some other utilities as well - I just like SlCC  more)  http://www.northernsoftworks.com/snowleopardcachecleaner.html - it's shareware though the basic functionality is free for you to use.
Try caches -> deep cleaning (please read the developers site what it does) and select checkmark at all options - reply yes to the requests and after a reboot the next reboot should be as it is intended.
p.s be sure you do have backup
