Broadband ISP's for Tiger

After long and arduous years with MS and PC’s I have bought an iBook. I have never used a Mac before and I love it all ready. However I used AOL broadband on my Pc and I would like to know if I could use broadband on my iBook. I know that I can’t use AOL however can anyone suggest another ISP that can connect me to the Internet using Broadband. Thank you and kind regards.
Ivor Harrison (New iBook and Mac user and loving it)

Hi Ivor and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Congratulations on your switch and your choice of the iBook. Good choice!
Your profile shows 'Durham'. As there are many Durhams throughout the world it's difficult to give you specific advice re ISPs. If you're from Durham UK then there are many ISPs available besides AOL. I don't know whether or not they're compatible with Macs but personally I wouldn't give AOL house room, whether on a PC or Mac.
I use Pipex, who are a well respected ISP having started life as a business supplier and later saw the potential in the home market. (Who wouldn't!). I have had very little down time over the 2+ years that I've been with them, they are absolutely Mac compatible and don't in any way dictate what sort of hardware you need to connect with them. I can't fault then except to say that they are probably not the cheapest. But you get webspace, 12 mailboxes, telephone support etc etc. More Here.
Post back if you need more help re hardware etc, and enjoy your iBook.

  • I have just moved my broadband ISP from BT to Utility Warehouse. I cannot access my AOL webmail account via Fiirefox

I have just transferred broadband ISP from BT to Utility Warehouse. After getting round the BT blocks, all seemed OK. I always use Firefox as a browser and have had bookmarks set up for my webmail accounts (various). All of those accounts can be accessed via Firefox except AOL which can only be accessed via Internet Explorer. I get on the initial AOL connection but cannot get to the Email sign in page.
I have tried to connect by various means but without success via Firefox. I have no desire to have to use IE and that is inconvenient anyway.

Apple discontinued BootCamp beta last year. They have all expired and no longer work.
    It was a beta program.
You need to purchase Leopard in order to install BootCamp and get the updates.
You can also install Winders without BootCamp using a virtual program like Parallels or using the free bootmanager, rEFIt. Either of these will allow you to install Winders, Linux or any other OSs on your HD, but you are on your own if you take that route.
The only support path is using Leopard.

I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Hello MacHeads: I downloaded Handbrake 0.9.1 for Tiger, so I can upload a homemade DVD for editing in imovie.  Problem is I can't even access Handbrake Help book, because I think my firewall settings are preventing me.  I tried turning off all my firewall

Hello MacHeads: I downloaded Handbrake 0.9.1 for Tiger, so I can upload a homemade DVD for editing in imovie.  Problem is I can't even access Handbrake Help book, because I think my firewall settings are preventing me.  I tried turning off all my firewall settings.?  IDK if I'm even doing that right.  Can anyone help out here?

You don't need Handbrake for that if it is your own DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle.
a DVD is in a compresed format called mpeg2, which is standard across all DVDs. This is what is known as a 'final delivery format' and is not suitable for editing. Because is is compressed, a 4.7GB DVD can hold a two hour movie (dual layer DVDs twice that), whereas the DV stream from a video camera, which runs at about 13GB per hour, is not compressed and IS intended for editing.
In other words you have to 'reverse engineer' the DVD back to an uncompressed format in ordfer to edit it. There is a penalty for doing this in terms of slight quality loss, but it is one you can live with.
When you have your DVD as an icon on your desktop, double-click it, and it will open to reveal a TS-Folder containing a number of various files, some called VOB. These are the constituent parts of any video DVD.
When you have downloaded and installed mpegStreamclip, and purchased and installed the Apple mpeg2 plugin, open mpegStreamclip and drag the entire TS Folder into its window. Then using the various menus available to you (just explore them and you will get the hang of it) ask it to convert to DV.
That DV file, which will be many times larger than the original TS Folder, and which can a while to create (be patient - make coffee or prune the roses!) is what you can now import into iMovie for editing etc.
When you have finished doing that, you then have to turn the project back into a DVD.
mpegStreamclip can be downloaded from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Will there be a Security Update 2009-006 for Tiger PPC

Apple released Security Update 2009-006 for Leopard today, but not for Tiger.
Is there going to be any more support and updates for Tiger, since Snow Leopard came out?

    Hahahahah, yeah....
Actually, I just tried to reply to your message using Safari 4.0.4 and repeatedly got this error:
    Request Timeout
The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.
    Reference #2.4da21160.1258046993.0
It did that with another page too, but is loading others fine. I am wondering if there is an issue. I may have to downgrade to 3 again, if that is possible.
I got used to using Firefox because I just upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 and had to use Safari 2.x, which doesn't work so well with the web anymore.

  • ITunes for tiger os

    Last iTunes for tiger OS

You appear to be using a Macbook.  An option is to upgrade operating system to 10.6.8 or higher which will allow you to use a much newer iTunes.  If you have a new i-device such as an iPod you have no choice if you want to sync.
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then  "About This Mac".  Write down what it says about "version"and report that here.  Now continue to "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
If you have a PPC Mac you cannot sync your idevice without a newer computer.
If it says you have an Intel Mac you can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but check system requirements first:
    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After installing run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.

I really don't know if this will work for you on a Windows machine, but it is downloading the Tiger version for me on a Leopard machine, so may be worth a try …
    Safari for Tiger
EDIT it doesn't appear to like that direct link, but redirects to another short page offering me a choice between Tiger and Leopard versions again. See what it does for you—hopefully it won't enforce a Windows solution again!

  • Quicktime 7.4.5 for Tiger?

    Hi all,
I suffered the dreaded jerky playback with the QT7.5 "upgrade", so I reverted to 7.4.1 using Pacifist.
Problem is iTunes now says I need QT 7.4.5 to watch videos I have purchased, and if I open those videos in QT 7.4.1, apart from just getting a grey screen, I am told that I need to re-authorise my computer to play this content, even though if I do that in iTunes I am told my machine is already authorised.
    Two questions:
    1. I could not find a QT 7.4.5 on the Apple site for Tiger - only for Leopard. I clearly recall my QT was auto-updated to 7.4.5 a few months back so what is the URL to download the right version?
    2. How do I re-authorise my iTunes content so that I can play it (or will getting 7.4.5 fix it?
    Thanks muchly...

It is possible that something in either your pre-existing setup or your method of installing updates, are the root causes of whatever problems you are having with QT 7.5 particularly with choppy playback. Out of date plug-ins and add-ons could also be playing a part. Some users have found choppy playback to be associated with improperly loaded plug-ins and add-ons from third party vendors as well as those included by Apple with prior versions of Quicktime.
Third-party add-ons include DivX, Flip4Mac, or FLV components, while the included plug-ins are AppleIntermediateCodec.component, and AppleMPEG2Codec.component. The files for these are located in the root library, therefore a faulty component will load improperly for all users, resulting in choppy playback even when a user creates a new account. Some may need updating or just reinstalling to work with QT 7.5.
    You should therefore:
Remove and re-add all quicktime components and plug-ins.
    Navigate to /Library/QuickTime/
Move all plug-in ".component" files from the folder (to the Desktop, for instance)
Launch QuickTime and quit it again
Place the ".component" files back in the QuickTime library folder
Launch QuickTime again, and the choppiness should be better.
A few more things to try but in each case first close all applications and repair permissions.
1 Try opening then closing GarageBand, or launching then quitting the "Audio MIDI Setup" application located in Applications/Utilities. Failing that, go back to Audio MIDI Setup, and under the Audio Devices tab, make sure the Audio Output Format is 44100.0 2ch-16bit.
    Restart your Mac.
2 Go to the Library on your main hard disk and find the Internet Plug-Ins folder. Try removing the following files:
    QuickTime plugin.plugin
    Quicktime plugin.webplugin
    Restart your Mac.
    Re-install the Quicktime 7.5 update
Go to Home/Library/Receipts and delete the file Quicktime 7.5 pkg.
Download from the Download page on the Apple site the correct version of Quicktime 7.5 for your Mac.
Install it and restart your Mac. Repair permissions.
3 If still no luck, it is time to look carefully at your plug-ins and add-ons. The safest way is to download and re-install all of them. The ones you need in order to see and hear virtually everything the web has to offer are:
RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of all recent Security Updates.
(N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
If none of the foregoing worked, then you should consider and archive and install before repeating all of the above.
Note that most users experiencing these problems have reported that the Quicktime update 7.5.5, and the security update 2008-006, cured the problem.
Lack of free space on your hard disk can also cause 'choppy playback'.

  • Anything like Bento for Tiger?

I have Filemaker's Bento on my iMac, running Leopard and love it. My laptop however, is an iBook G3 with Tiger installed, and Bento won't work on any OS before Leopard, so..
Does anyone know of something that provides a small customizable database that integrates iCal and Address Book? I use iCal, Address Book, and Mail for my business, but need a good way to take down a bunch of notes, and maintain contact with customers. The notes are usually the same each time I take them, and I need to refer to them over and over.
Any ideas would be awesome. Thanks!!
    Stephen

About the only thing readily available for both Tiger and Leopard
to do these kinds of functions, and be transferable between all,
could be the feature set in MobileMe... as it gains strength and
the product gets on track to being the high standard we'd expect.
    { MobileMe and an iPhone? There's two interesting considerations! }
However, that is a service; and not a product for Tiger to do for
you what Bento does in Leopard. There should be some kind of
shareware to fulfill this rather basic need. Have you tried the
    software downloads page: http://www.apple.com/downloads/ ?
Some of the other software sites have links to shareware & free-
    ware, such as http://versiontracker.com & http://macupdate.com
which are searchable and also have a by topic index.
Hopefully someone with a more precise contribution will appear.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Good troubleshooting book for tiger

hello, has anyone heard of the "x-lab" book by dr smoke? is it pretty good? i read a little and it seemed like it could help. before i get it i wanted to check and see if anyone knows or can recommend other books for troubleshooting and repairs and such for tiger. i have the missing manual book and its good, but it's more like an intro to tiger. i would like to learn how to fix my mac and do troubleshooting and learn more about the os.
    thx

Hi! Dr. Smoke is one of the "masters" and is revered by all one these boards. It's a good book to have around in that time of trouble especially if you don't have another computer that you can use for research on a problem. Also one of the best ways to learn is by reading the posts and especially solved ones. You'll soon pick up on the best "experts" and you'll always find yourself reading anything they post! Tom
