Broadband sharing from my desktop pc to my ibook

i have a desktop pc at home which has a broadband connection which i want to share with my ibook wirelessly at the same time, so i can have the ibook use the internet wirelessly and the desktop directly connected to teh broadband while both being able to use the connection at the same time.
i just want to share my broadband on a windows PC with my ibook as easily as possible. and if so would the Airport express achieve this?
any advice would be much appreciated.

The AirPort Express does not have any LAN ports on it in which to be able to directly connect your Desktop PC - it has only one Ethernet port which is the WAN - input of your modem. The only way to have both sharing the connection via the AirPort Express is to have both wireless.
Hope this helps
Nik
EDIT: You may wish to consider an AirPort Extreme Base Station that does have a LAN port on it. This would allow networking. However, this would not support AirTunes as does AirPort Express

  • Will I be able to access my home sharing from my laptop if desktop is in storage for a few months ?

My desktop will not update iTunes. Running WinXP.  Enabled home sharing and all is well on my laptop (Win7).  I'm relocating out of state. Staying with family until I get on my feet for a few months. Desktop will be in storage.  Will I still be able to  access my  purchased music on my laptop although my desktop is boxed up somewhere else? I was able to transfer CD installed music to laptop thru a flash drive.

    Hi Finewhitesugar,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. Home Sharing allows you to both stream and transfer music between computers, as noted in the article below. You should be able to play any music that you transferred from your desktop to your laptop prior to storing it, but would not be able to stream anything while the desktop is off and in storage.

Other options would include redownloading any previous purchases directly from the iTunes Store to your laptop and/or using iTunes Match. You may find the following articles helpful:

  • Reading File from a Desktop/ShareFolder in SAP MII 14.0

    Dear Experts,
I have a situation where I want to read a CSV file from a source different than SAP MII server. Basic intention is to read a file from a desktop or some shared folder.
My first doubt is- Is it really possible in SAP MII 14.0 version?
But still I tried doing the same. Used Get File Text Loader action and text loader and provided file path from desktop which gives me an error. Here's the syntax I tried with mask as .csv:
    C://Users/XXX/Desktop
    C:\Users\XXX\Desktop
    C:/Users/XXX/Desktop
Error I get is as follows:
[ERROR] [Get_File_List_0]GetFileList: Access to the file path /C://Users/XXX/Desktop is not allowed
Please advise, if it is really possible in MII 14.0 . If yes, Am I missing any steps?
    Regards

    Hi Kirti
To read/load a file from your desktop you will need to execute some form of client side program like HTML or JS or applets. MII Transactions run on the MII server and would point to the Server's C:/ if the server has such a folder. Usually users do not have access to C drive of servers. Hence you see the error.
You will need to write some program that executes on your desktop and pulls the file from your system and then posts to the server.

  • How do u transfer a file from a desktop to an ipad?

I installed itunes and have the usb cable connected. I can see the ipad. How do i transfer files from my desktop to the ipad?

Depends what kind of files, you have to have apps that allow for file sharing in itunes. (if this is what you are refering to). Directions can be found in the help tab of the itunes toolbar.
Transfer files between your computer and mobile apps
If you have an iPod touch or iPhone with iOS 4 or later software, or an iPad, you can use iTunes to transfer files between your computer and an app on your device that supports file sharing.
You might want to do this if, for example, you want to save files you create on your device to your computer, or take files with you so you can use them when you’re away from your computer.
You don’t need to sync your device to transfer files, but your device needs to be connected to your computer.
For information about supported apps, see the documentation for your apps.

  • How can I send pictures or email from my desktop to a cell phone?

How can I send pictures or email from my desktop to a cell phone?
I use Gmail for my emails.

By sharing playlists you mean sending the list of song titles along with the songs themselves you can't.  That would violate Apple's contracts with the studios regarding sharing music, videos, books, etc.  Which is strictly forbidden. With the single exception that I am aware of which is Home Sharing.
If you just want to share the list of song titles you could take a screen shot and email that.  Hold down the home button and press and release the power button.  The image is then stored in your camera roll.

  • How to allow the user to upload a file from their desktop to MII Server?

    Hi,
Is there a way for the user to specify a file on their local computer to upload to the MII server for processing?  We have a method that works for uploading from a shared network drive, but now the need/desire is to allow the user to upload a file from their desktop.
Ideally, this would be a file browser that the user would click on to browse their local desktop and select the file and click "Upload" but not sure what's possible?
    This is using 12.1 SP4.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Extreme Base station can't extend signal from Mini desktop ?TCP/IP settings

I have a Mac Mini connected to DSL via a lynksys 8 port workgroup switch. I had 6 rooms in my house connected to the router by ethernet wiring. Worked great for several years. Now 2 rooms cabling seems to have gone bad (mice or squirrels, maybe). To avoid rewiring the connection outlets or pulling wire again (Ugh!), we bought an extreme base station. It transmits the internet signal fine when connected to the ethernet network (roaming), but I cannot get it to allow clients to access the internet in WDS mode.
The base station is in a central location where there is not an ethernet jack. It picks up the airport signal from the Mini (with extreme card and yes, I have the MAC address of the Mini chosen).
Internet connection is "shared" on the Mini and the laptops have no trouble accessing internet within close range of the Mini. The laptops can't access the internet through the base station. I suspect it's how the TCP/IP is assigned. I have tried every possible combination in the Airport Admin Utility.
In the WDS diagrams, it always shows 2 or more Base stations, never a Desktop and a Base. Are these incompatible?

...but can't figure out how for the Mini....
When you select "Share your Internet connection with AirPort-equipped computers," click AirPort Options to give your network a name and password.
Since they are the "same" network does it matter?
If one has no encryption or is using weaker encryption it will be the weak link for others to access your entire network.
Normally, if you want to seamlessly roam between the 2 wireless networks, ensure that they are using the same network name (SSID), same encryption type, same encryption level, and same encryption password. However any wireless device connecting to the Mac mini's network will be on a separate subnet.
Now I've got to figure out how to get files off the Office Desktop from the laptops, should I set up afp for airport or ethernet?
Enable Personal File Sharing on the Desktop.

  • Internet Sharing from some other source TO an AirPort base station

I have an unusual setup. My wifi comes in through some obscure USB adapter in my desktop Mac. This cannot be changed. I then connect my desktop Mac to my Mac laptop with an ethernet cable and enable Internet Sharing. This works fine.
What I would like to do is connect the desktop Mac to the AirPort base station instead of directly to my laptop. Then I could use the built-in AirPort in the laptop to connect to the base station. I've tried using the desktop Mac's internal AirPort with internet sharing, which works sporadically. I would rather use this new base station that I got if we could focus on that instead of fixing this other method please.
Is there a special way to set up the base station to do this? It doesn't work automatically. For example, should I use the LAN or WAN port? What settings should I change with AirPort admin utility?

    Yes that can work.
Enable internet sharing on the desktop Mac from USB to Ethernet.
Connect the WAN port of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the desktop Mac. Configure the AEBS to act as a bridge (not sharing a single public IP address).

  • How do I stream photo's from my desktop's harddrive (windows 8) to my apple TV?

I am unable to stream photo's from my desktop's harddrive (runs on Windows 8) to my Apple TV.  I turned Sharing on on both devices.  When I go to my apple TV (and my PC is on with Itunes running), and I click the Computer app on apple TV, I can only see my music in my library.  There are no photos or no other folders.

    In itunes
Ctrl B to turn on the top menu. Then
File > Home Sharing > Choose which Photos to sync to apple tv
This pops up a box where you can select Apps or folders to send the photos to Apple TV

  • Uninstall FCS2 from G5 desktop, reinstall MBP-17"

I have Final Cut Studio 2 running on my MacG5 Dual Core. I am thinking of purchasing the new Macbook Pro 17" and reinstalling FCS2 on the new laptop. I have heard rumors that a new version of FCS will be out around October so i don't want to purchase a copy of the current version at this time.
So my question is how (or should) I uninstall-deactivate FCS2 from my desktop G5 and reinstall it on a new Macbook Pro 17". I'm holding on the purchase of the MBP until I am certain I'm doing the right thing.
I have a Macbook that I purchased about 18 months ago on which I have FCE4 but I would really prefer to use Motion than Live Type, but I understand from reading the specs that FCS2 won't run on my Macbook because of the intel graphics processor.
Plus I'm ready to ditch the limits of using a desktop for two reasons: my editing is only to produce short work-related instructional videos and I really don't need the capacity of a desktop machine; and i recently got married and my wife lives in one city but for now I'm keeping my job in another city 200 miles away and alternating between working from my office and my wife's home and need to have my work 'transportable.'
Any guidance and advice would be appreciated. I have not found a way to uninstall or deactivate FCS2 anywhere in the online help.

Well bust my buttons! Great news. Thanks for sharing. I guess i never realized that. Appreciate the guidance. Best regards, Duane

  • In OS 10.6.8 how do I turn on printer sharing from terminal?

I have a Mac Pro and I need to share a printer, however every time I go to sharing and try to select printer sharing preferences crashes. Is there a way to turn on printer sharing from termina?

In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • Screen sharing from Tiger

Is it possible connect to another mac and gain access to its screen from a mac running tiger? I am trying to connect to my mac laptop that is running Leopard. I can get my laptop to screen share with this tiger computer, but not the other way. any suggestions?

Actually, you don't even need that vine server on your Leopard machine, or on your Tiger machine (I'm a little unclear who is who on your working configuration and who is who on your not-working configuration).
If you want to use your Tiger machine (VNC client) to access the Leopard machine (VNC server), then on the Leopard machine, go to Sys Prefs > Sharing, check the Screen Sharing checkbox, and click on the "Computer settings..." button. In the resulting popup, check the "VNC viewers may control screen with password" checkbox and enter the password that you will require the Tiger client to use to connect with their VNC client program. I assume you are using CotVNC or JollysFastVNC as the VNC client program on your Tiger machine?
Now, if I got the direction backwards, here is what you would do to use your Leopard machine (VNC client) to access the Tiger machine (VNC server): On the Tiger machine, go to Sys Prefs > Sharing and check the Apple Remote Desktop checkbox on the Services panel. I think that would do it.
Now, I, personally, further configure my Tiger machine to allow VNC from other Tigers as well as from Leopard's Screen Sharing program in Leopard, so while I don't think you would have to do the following for Leopard-only clients, if the above isn't working, then try these additional steps:
First, click on the Tiger (VNC server) Firewall tab in Sys Prefs Sharing. Click "New." There is a pulldown menu in the resulting popup where you can choose "VNC." Choose it. It will "quickfill" the port entry information for you. Save those changes and exit.
If that still doesn't do it, then return to Sys Prefs > Sharing > Services panel. With the Apple Remote Desktop service checkboxed and highlighted/selected, click on the "Access Privileges" In the top part of the resulting popup, you can grant access privileges by user; fill out as desired. In the bottom part, check the "VNC viewers may control screen with password" checkbox. IF you were allowing VNC access from other Tigers, use the password that you would want VNC clients to use. I think you probably need something in there if you have to do this last step.
By the way, you know that, in Leopard, you can launch Screen sharing from Finder by doing a ⌘k and typing in "vnc://{name of remote computer goes here}", right? Also, if you haven't already done so, you may find it convenient to drag /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app onto your dock and/or make an alias of it in your Applications folder.
