Broadband Slow in peak times & packet loss?

Hi guys,
I've had a number of months of reasonable surfing, but about a week or so ago I started getting problems with my broadband, at first I thought it was just "one of those things" so I left it for a while and when I got up the next day the problem had seemingly vanished. However later that evening the problem re-emerged and the pattern has continued ever since, with it being 'normal' during the day and then incredibly slow in the 'peak' times. I'm on totally unlimited (no useage cap) so I'm not expecting my broadband to be throttled and I haven't made any changes to the setup in the house for a number of months, so interference etc from my own equipment isn't an issue. I've connected my laptop directly to the hub and that had no effect on the problem.
During the daytime we get around 3-5mbps (its still abit lame, but its the best we can get :<), and then in the last few during the evenings those speeds have been being slashed to around 0.3-0.8mbps and at times it just dies on us.
I've been in contact with the helpdesk in india, but I'm at a point where I need some of the friendly mods to help me out as I'm not overly happy with the service on those phone lines with their standard flowchart of "help" where last night I was asked the same question 2/3 times by the same person in the space of 20 minutes :'(
Here's a snapshot of about 2 1/2 hours of 'uptime' during the problem period, the HEC events/ CRC events stats look mindblowingly massive so I suspect they are the symptoms of the underlying problem, the question is what is the underlying problem and how can I get it fixed. I can see alot of other people have been having similar problems - are we all in the same boat, could it be something widespread such as the weather? (I've looked on the status page and our area is apparently ok though)
As always any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Slow and lots of packet loss

    Hi Folks,
I have a wireless network set up at home with 3 macs on it. I have a G3 iMac (ruby) with an airport card (original), a Dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD also with an original airport card in it and finally a new MacBook Pro with the standard Airport Extreme 802.11N card and firmware.
Both the older machines connect and browse as one would expect them to and are lightning fast at browsing compared to the MBP. Is there some sort of mismatch with the cards?
The router is not Apple. It is a Billion 7402VGP (wireless and VoIP) with the latest firmware. It is not capable of 802.11N but is capable of 802.11g. I have tried the MBP with traceroute with 50% packet loss on wireless but none on ethernet. The G4 on wireless has no packet loss and is further away.
Any advice? What else could I tell you that would help you to help me?
MacBook Pro 15" 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.1.8.5

Hi Jane, Thanks for the reply. I have now purchased an AEBS(n) to try to overcome this problem. The Apple site says it is compatible with all versions of Airport card so I thought it would solve the problem. My new problem is to be found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1087292&tstart=0
However to answer your questions, The OS is 10.4.10 and I have run every updater I can find for all Macs concerned. hope this helps.

  • Very slow upload speeds and packet loss

My download speed is around 36M and my upload speed on speed tests either fails to connect or I get around 0.5M. Pinging google leads to frequent none responses, probably on average 1 in ever 8 pings fails.
I have rebooted the router, reset the router to factory settings and disconnected all devices apart from 1 clean CentOS desktop pc to do the speed test and still get the same results. Could someone please give me details so I can get this investigated properly and soon as it is effecting my work.

Still experiencing unusable upload speeds, can someone please help me with this? Below is todays test.

  • Broadband + Slow Safari Load Time speed tweek

Give this a go to see if it improves your slow loading Safari.
    * QUIT Safari before typing these commands into terminal
    To add this speedup behaviour:
    defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 0.001
    To remove this speedup behaviour:
    defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 1.0
Launch Safari again and give it a go. If not helpful, quit and enter the last line given above to remove the behaviour.

If this is a wizard generated form, was there any modification made ?. The jbInit
code by default sets up the InfoProducer objects. The ApplicationModule is then
created and queries executed when the publisSession method is called on the SessionInfo
object. This publishSession by default happens after the jbInit code. I would imagine
the publishSession method to take more time in comparision to jbInit code which
typically instantiates the UI elements and creates your form. Is there any other
setup that happens in jbinit ?.
If I remove the jbInit call from the program, the load time goes down to 5 secs
(which would probably be acceptable), but then I lose the navigation. Could you provide more info., on what you mean by navigation ?. Is is the setup of
the navigation bar and menu you are referring to ?.

  • Slow Internet during Peak Times

Hi I am actually a Sky customer but because of living in a rural area everything is done through the BT lines.
I'v known for awhile that if you are downloading or using p2p programms through peak times, your internet is slowed during peak times intentionally by BT, which I have no problem with, and since I am a Sky customer but working through the BT lines this also effects me.
    However...
The internet is getting slowed down even though no downloads are occuring during peak times, I am the only one in my house that uses downloads (parents just use facebook), whenever I do download it is for games on steam, but now I just do them at another house because...
    1) 10mb internet isn't all that great for downloading large files I would rather not leave my PC on for 2 nights just to download a game
    2) I can go to a friends house and use theirs and not be effected by the peak time limit, and download at a very high speed
My step brother uploads videos to youtube, and when he does them, its usually about 12AM before he goes to sleep, and never during the peak times, that is the upmost most stress that happens in terms of our internet traffic.
The internet slows down at exactly 5:15PM to 11:15PM, every single day, and during this time the internet is pretty much unusable, even to browse web pages, watching videos on youtube(in lowest quality 240p) or playing xbox/pc/ps3 is stictly a nono.
This is a quote from a rather basic forum page
"Total time taken to generate the page: 61.17250 seconds"
Even google takes an abnormally long time to load.
I phoned Sky and they said they cannot do anything as it is BT owns the lines and I should expect a call from BT soon, they did phone, but I was not in, and have never had a phone call again.
I am just wondering how can I resolve this issue.
    Thanks
    Stefan

  • IPhone - OSX 10.5.6 internet sharing via wifi has packet loss

I try to access the web on the iPhone (for testing purposes) via the bult-in internet sharing capability of my MacBookPro via WiFi. I get very slow connections and high packet loss on distances of less than a foot.
If I activate Internet sharing (eth0 - AirPort) I have packet loss of up to 80% on a Ping to the iPhone. This results in an unusable connection. In this case the iPhone gets a DHCP address from the DSL box (10.0.2.2). Pay attention to the HUGE standard deviation of the packets in case of the internet sharing!!
If anyone has config hints, I appreciate that very much. Does anyone know how to bridge en0 to Airport with WEP enabled?
    Internet sharing activated:
    --- 10.0.2.2 ping statistics ---
202 packets transmitted, 150 packets received, 25% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 18.312/1768.538/8198.289/2201.202 ms
If I set up a Computer-Computer network with a WEP password I get no packet loss, but of course I cannot access the internet that way because there is no way in preferences to bridge the networks.
    --- 169.254.246.154 ping statistics ---
443 packets transmitted, 442 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.441/1.983/57.068/2.691 ms

    I accidentally found a workaround:
    1. Activate internet sharing
    2. Goto network preferences and use AirPort: "Create network ..."
    3. Check require Password and create a C2C network
    4. The Airport Icon changes from the up-arrow to the computer icon
    5. Connect with the iPhone.
Packet loss is gone and sharing works fine.
BIG BUG: Procedure has to be repeated every time AirPort is turned on/off, as Internet Sharing disables/resets the airport setup!

  • Speed meltdown at peak times BT engineer appoint n...

HI I hope I still get help from this forum dispite been a customere of TalkTalk but before you close this page for been on the "other team" Im here for advice before I commit to agreeing to a BT engineers visit where I will be charged £65 if no fault is found and if this happens an I still have the issue it will be like taking a dagger to the back an paying for it.
My issue is this and I have had it for far too long now as long as i can remember but as devices become reliant on a constant speed the issue is starting to dog me more then ever. Basicaly my internet speed is approx 3.90mbps all day all night 18 hours of the day but as soon as 6pm come till about 11pm  my speed can drops to approx  0.70mbps an long periods as low as  0.40mbps totaly unusable for catch up tv buffering on even standard play nevermind HD content with web pages loading in image by image it reminds me of of old 56k modem days an win 98.
Talktalk tell me that my SNR is fluxuating an suspected a router flault they organised a test router to be posted out this in my heart I knew this would not fix the situation having been upgraded with a fibre enable router 12 months ago for  if i choose to go fibre although I still only have standard Broadband, the issue did not resolve with newer version router and nor did it improve with the brandnew router they dispatched for testing purposes. So in short the issue is happening on 3 roouters umteen different filters I have tried just as many adsl cables from router to masterbox and always testing speed using wired Lan cables which again have used about 5 in testing an still i slow down at this peak time. I may add that I have my router direct into the master socket even removing the front faceia plate and plugging  direct into test socket as talktalk desired for testing.
Im informed that lines tests show no fault but my SNR is flucuating as I say they say router fault but I fail to believe 3 routers can have same fault they have now asked me to agree to terms and conditions to a visit from an engineer to which states that I will be liable to a fee if  No fault can be found if the line needs upgrading to deliver adiquet service and if internal wiring of my doing causing the fault. I have no internal wiring as well just adsl cable from master socket to routers ive tested.
Im worried I will be charged a fee for no fault found and to be landed with £65 bill an still suffer this meltdown at peak times will be like a slap to the face with a large trout but think ther has to be some kind of issue somewhere !. I really dont know which way to turn.
I read that talktalk promise never to slow down peak times an yet I read to expect some kinds of lowering of speed peak times but to suffer  a drop  3.90mbps to 0.70/0.40mbps  is peak time meltdown.
I would just like some kind of advice before i commit to this engineer apointment yet not commiting means I paying line rental an for broadband service which is really not delivering  unless i surf/ catcvh up with my programmes thro the night or during the day which is not possible.
I dont know if it worth mention but I just remember 10 yr ago an 8 yr ago everytime i transfered services from 1 provider to another their was issue with activating me services I remeber an engineer had to visit  twice as after switch over I was unable to call out the engineer had to place a tracer box on my master socket an off he went to the exchange and was a while. On returning he said he had difficulty finding my line as in his words the line had been split due to low avalability of lines. On the 2nd occasion the engineer didnt visit me but a visit to the exchange was needed  before my services resumed after i switche dprovided it just didnt seem straight forward for me that is why is sticks in my memeory banks. Just thought I would mention this in case it helps shine light to resolve this current issue
Please any help would be appreaciated

Your not one of us we wont help attitude is why the world is in the sorry mess it is declining into and Hmm at we are called BT but not part of BT open reach this that and the other....this is why despite all the advertising all the flyers in my door all the sales calls to which i pretend to be interested for so long waste your time then give the following reason to why i will never ever be with BT ever again for last 12 years. Before the monthly fee for internet went mainstream an long before Bband aprox 1999 very few company's offered a monthly tariff for dial up it was by main 1p a min to connect BT started a monthly tariff to compete with freeserve worldonline and after 6 mths suddenly announced it was to terminate the contracts of the heaviest users. Their was no reason just a letter or termination of services and most comically no telephone number for answers just an address to write which was the most Northern point of Scotland no doubt to head off disgruntled customers. Seems BT wanted peoples cash but for people not to use the service much.
Basically every time I get a call or knock on the door from BT they get laughed at I see things havnt changed now suffering the identity crisis with products. services and maintenance not knowing where its head feet an azz is.
    that was 1999/2000
You were at it again in 2001
Are BT Openworld Set To Get Tough On Heavy ADSL Users? ... They have already written to heavy Satellite Broadband users telling them that if they dont stop using excessive bandwidth they will loose services .
I get a sense just how much they actually value customeres your money good just dont use us too much.
Or was that not BT but a branch off

  • Internet dropping at Peak Time, I'm being throttle...

    Hello
To put some context to this we've had problems for a while now with our internet and the connection dropping and being slow during peak times. I've recently been informed of throttling that can occur during peak times to high usage users. I'd qualify as a high usage user but as my package is Unlimited and the fair use policy has been abolished last year, thus I should not be getting throttled as I most definitely am. I have run tests and know enough about IT to know that this is the case but yet whenever I speak to someone over the phone (which I have done many times) they are not able to help me and tell me to do go through the same motions and state that there is nothing wrong with the line. I have been unable to get the throttling turned off over the phone and it's just infuriating now. To clarify I've had this package since before 2013 and as such my deduction is that the my P2P download speed is still being capped.
Can a moderator on these forums help me with this problem?

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
If you have not renewed your contract since 2012 then it is possible you still have the p2p in your t&c. Run the gkasnost test and check.  It would be worth renewing your contract as you may be paying more than necessary for your broadband
    http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Slow peak time broadband - intentional or a possib...

Anyone else experience drastically reduced download speeds at peak times recently?
In the past 2-3 weeks I've gone from a constant 24/7 speed of 3.4Mbps to very random speeds at peak times. It can range anywhere from 0.6Mbps to 2.8Mbps.
I've done various speed tests at speedtester.bt.com and always get different results.
I've used a non-BT speed tester (speedtest.net) to get results  that aren't an hour apart and the results here are strange. One test may give 1.1Mbps, another test only seconds later will give 1.6Mbps, another one again straight after could give 0.8Mbps, another 2.5Mbps and so on.
My IP profile has never changed from 3500k so I can't blame this. I'm wireless but I've tested wired too but no change. I've tried different wireless adapters tto. I'm not sharing a wireless channel with anyone so can rule out this. I know I haven't gone over my monthly limit. I've tried different routers. I've even been connected to the test socket for the last week or so but it's still the same.
I read a lot about users getting their speeds reduced at peak times, but I'm under the impression if my speed was reduced it would be a constant capped speed, not randomly going from 0.8 to 2.5Mbps in a matter of moments and then back to 1Mbps-ish.
It may not even be a "peak time" problem but I can't think what else it could be. At weekends I get 3.4Mbps, after around midnight and very early mornings (5am to 7am-ish) I get 2.8-3.4Mbps.
I did have an odd period of a week or so before this started of getting a download speed of 4Mbps (this was with an IP profile of 3500k oddly enough) - then the problems started. Might be a coincidence though.
There's no point speaking to anyone in a call centre in India since all they'll say is that my line is fine etc etc.
Anyone else experience this and found out what's causing it?
I just fail to see how I can go from a constant, never-buding-from-this-speed 3.4Mbps for months down to 1Mbps when all technical signs (IP profile fine, equipment fine etc) point to there being no reason why this is the case.

    welcome to the forum
if you are using p2p during peak times then the speed is managed
your problems sounds more like conegestion on your exchange when more people want to use the net at peak times and then download improves when people go to bed or during the day when they are at work

  • High Packet Loss, High Ping and Slow Connection Ov...

    Hi There,
I have been a customer with the BT unlimited broadband package for a little under two years and up until recently have had no real issues with the service. This was until around 3/4 weeks ago I noticed that the internet was very slow and certain online games or applications like Netflix would lose all of its quality or stop completely. At first I thought nothing of it and simply reset my BT Home hub router, and sure enough everything was back to normal. However after around 2-3 hours of moderate use (gaming online or watching Netflix) the problem surfaced again.
Now I am lucky if I can get the entire way through a 40 minute TV episode before the quality drops and/or the service requires buffering. I have already contacted BT via the helpline and the service lady ran through the obligatory steps (turn off, wait 5 minutes, reset the home hub etc.) but she failed to understand that although rebooting the home hub does alleviate the problem initially, the symptoms of a slow connection, high packet loss and high ping always return within an hour.
Four the last couple of weeks I have been trying to investigate the problem myself and I have done the following things:
Tested the line using the master socket (no difference)
Opened the ports on my firewall within the home hub (no difference)
Directly wired in the computer instead of relying on the wifi (no difference)
Tested for interference from neighbours wifi using inSSIDider office (it wasn’t, operating on different channels)
Switched every device that requires internet off apart from the PC (no difference)
So with all that in mind I am fairly confident that it is nothing within my house that has caused a significant reduction in internet quality.
Now I have tried my best to display the problem I am having by recording the connection quality for the last 24 hours. The table below represents the condition and quality of the connection after leaving it a period of time without resetting:
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection Information
    Line state:

And here is a result of the ping and packet loss during this time:
Now I immediately reset the home hub after running that test and ran the test again. These are the results I a achieved within 2 minutes of internet connectivity:

What is causing this poor quality in connection and what can be done to rectify the problem?
Thank you for your response in advanced.

Thank you for you quick reply, I have just moved my hub to the master socket again and re-run the test and I seem to be getting the same results.

I have also checked if the bell wire was attached and it is not. My socket is of the new type with the inclusion of an inductor on the faceplate. My ADSL filters and modem cable already have the middle connecting pins removed so I don’t think it is a wiring problem, at least in my apartment anyway. I have also searched for problems with the exchange and they are showing green for my area. (Liverpool Central)
I have just rang the quiet line and I do not appear to have any noise on the line. However, all I have is a cordless phone and I know that is not ideal for determining noise due to the radio frequency interfering with the phone speaker.
Again thank you for you time on this issue.

    Richard

  • Extremely slow internet and 20-50% packet loss

This has been happening for at least a week. I've been trying to play online games such as dota 2 where I have up to 50% packet loss at times. I also try to watch streams however it is usually constantly buffering every 5 seconds on any quality over 240p. I have tried restarting both my modem and router. I've also done a ping test to google which came back with:Pinging google.com [216.58.216.110] with 32 bytes o

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 12ms, Average = 11msSometimes I will have no packet loss as shown but other times I will have 50%. It happens randomly. However streams will  never work above 240p. I have tried speedtesting my internet when it is slow and it comes back the usual 20 Mbps down and 5 up. Anyone know whats going on or any tests I can try? It is extemely frustrating not knowing what to do

I am sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with this. Has this happened recently? I was able to check the connection history and it does seem to be much better for the past week. If the issue comes back let me know, we might need to have a tech check this. -FC

Hi, wondering if you were ever able to resolve this or get any additional info from Verizon on it?
I have some customers on FIOS reporting problems to our ec2 servers.   After some a couple nights of debugging I found your post and I have a set of remarkably similar mtr output (also have a similar trace to a 108.x.x.x FIOS endpoint):

Wondering how to proceed with Verizon, as you mention this only seems to occur during night-time hours, so it's a tricky issue to get support on.  For us it means very slow (1mbps or less) transfer speeds between our servers and the FIOS customer, which is unacceptable.

  • PB G4 to WRT54G Ping Times with Packet Loss!!???

This morning when I woke up my PB G4, my Airport couldn't find my network. Found out that my father had turned off the modem and router because his Dell, which is wired to the router, had slow connection to the network (10 MB/ps or less, I think). I tried using Internet Connect using the assigned Network name and entering the WPA Personal password with no luck. So I then reset the router, configured to it's original settings and my fathers Dell got a better connection but my PB has gotten slower in connecting to sites and the page loading is considerably slower. Looked at iStumbler and it shows a lower signal and now it's showing noise, where before there was none. I ran a ping test to the router and got this.
    --- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 98 packets received, 2% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.536/2.495/26.476/3.414 ms
The router is a WRT54G v5 with the latest firmware that I had just reflashed.

I reset my router, changed the channel to 11 and disabled the SSID. That setting got a better but still iffy ping time with no noise.
I tried your suggestion and got this, along with some noise.
    --- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 99 packets received, 1% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.596/4.201/33.784/6.652 ms
    Any other ideas?

  • Time Capsule not compatible w MacBook Pro on 10.5.5 - packet loss

I've been limping along with rubbish internet speeds since upgrading to 10.5.5.
I assumed it was the isp - but then realised that the XP laptop connected via the same time capsule was having no problems.
Pinging shows 10 -30% packet loss.
In desparation we've reverted to the airport extreme and I have no connectivity issues which proves it a problem with how the MBP & Time Capsule work together.
All my data is on the timecapsule including my music library - how can I get this working again?

A "live verify" (ie, a verify performed on the currently-running system drive) in Disk Utility is unreliable. It's likely that you have a problem, but not guaranteed. You'll need to repair the hard drive at a minimum. Instructions are here:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
In my experience, repairs aren't always that reliable. In addition, I've been told that modern drives do not have these kinds of problems unless they are failing, but have no personal knowledge relating to that and don't know whether your five-year-old drive would be considered "modern." In any case, though, if it were me, I would probably erase the hard drive and restore from backups if I were you, rather than relying on a repair.
If the repair can't be completed, or if erasing the hard drive doesn't work, or if the problem comes back after erasing or repairing, then the drive is probably failing and will need to be replaced.
Regarding the bank issue, I believe this is either an error on the part of your bank or represents an attempt to hack your bank account remotely. If I were you, I would demand (politely, but firmly) an explanation of what the bank saw that they are identifying as malicious.
I honestly don't know how the bank could possibly identify malicious access, unless they noticed an attempted access from a weird IP address (for example, from an IP address in a different country or belonging to an identity-hiding service), which would indicate a hack not involving your computer. If malware on your computer was attempting access to your bank site, it wouldn't really look any different than a normal access attempt to the bank's site.

  • Thought you didnt get slow downs at peak times?

how come bt say that you wont slow down within peak times but on this site somewhere it says you may notice slow downs during peak times (4-11)???? im still getting high latency issues and its between these times. apparently theres only 30 out of 100 people in the cabinet, surely exchange congestion if thats the case.

So where are you seeing the latency spikes?
