Broadband Speed In West Kensington // Upload Speed

hello there
my name is gabrio, i live in fairholme road in west kensington... i wanted to ask how is the performance with BT broadband 20mbit in this area since i am thinking to request my own line given that at the moment in the flat where i live they have a shared connection which is really **bleep** especially in the evenngs so i want my own.
i read on forums that upload speed is just 448kbit which is a bit of ridiculous to me and i don't think we can get infinity yet in this area so that's what i would expect...
can somebody give me an idea about performance of BT? we should be on the Fulham Exchange if i am not wrong. i see the street cabinets from my window, apartment is pretty new so i think cables are in decent good condition.
many thanks
gabrio

Go to Solution.

according to this site http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search your exchange has been upgraded to 21CN and therefore any phone line should be able to get up to 20mb.. however this is dependant on the distnace you are from the exchange and also the quality of your line.
with 21CN you can get an upload of about 1mb and not the adsl figure of 448kb

  • Will a new router increase my broadband speed in this configuration

How much (if at all) can I increase my broadband speed by getting a faster router. Here's my config:
DSL line --> DSL modem --> Lynksys BEFSR41 Router --> Ethernet cat-5 wiring in house --> TimeCapsule WiFi
The computers using this network are an Intel iMac (10.6), a PowerPC iMac (10.4), and two Intel MacBooks (10.6).
The modem/router are located in an in-wall distribution box in a utility room. I want to keep the hardwired ethernet available in case the WiFi quits temporarily. The TimeCapsule is in a good location (top shelf bookcase on first floor) for coverage of my 2-story house. In principle could eliminate the Lynksys modem, and use the TC as the primary router, but it would be difficult to physical locate the TC where it could both distribute to the house ethernet and have good radio reception.
Testing via the hardwire ethernet (using Speakeasy and speedtest.net) shows download and upload speed 1.27Mbps and 0.32Mb/s. My ISP is pacbell.net. I get the same result via my W-Fi. Speedtest.net tells me my result is about 40% of the average for pacbell.net to my zip code 94301.
I've heard there are much faster routers than the BEFSR41, but I don't know if my internet speed is limited by my current router or by pacbell's DSL service.
    Any insights would be appreciated.

Will a new router increase my broadband speed
No...your speed is only going to be as fast as your weekest link, which in your case is the DSL modem and the connection speed package you subsribe to.

  • Broadband Speed Issues

I've been having an issue for the last few weeks with my broadband speed, as it has suddenly become very slow. I contacted the BT broadband support and they did some tests on the line and they came back fine. I then moved the connection from the master socket to the test socket re-did the speed test and the results were exactly the same as the master socket. So support seemed to think it maybe something to do with the ADSL filters and are going to send me some new ones. The connection is now back in the master socket.
I've done a phone test using a handset and there did not seem to be any interference on the line. So I googled around and started wondering if I'd been banded. I've recently moved (about 6 weeks ago) from BT broadband option 2 to BT Broadband option 3 which could have coincided with when the problem started, but I'm not 100% sure that this is the case. I was thinking maybe I've been banded since moving to option 3. I've not maintained a steady connection since my move to option 3 as my router is switched off every night. So I've now maintained a steady connection (connected to the master socket) for a over a day however the stats show no sign of improvement. I'm going to maintain this connection for 3 days as suggested in other threads to see if the stats improve. I just thought I would post to see if anybody had any other ideas, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've now maintained a connection for over 5 days but still seem to be on a banded profile there does seem to have been some errors and some signal loss but it does not seem to have been enough to have reset the clock. Is there anything else I can do to improve the speed or is it just a case of maintaning a connection until the speed decides to improve?

  • Difference between BT Broadband Speed Test and all...

I have recently moved to BT Broadband from TalkTalk as I was dissatisfied with the speeds that I was getting with my TalkTalk line – they were OK outside of peak time but woeful in peak time.  With TalkTalk, I was on their ‘up to’  8Mbps which, in practice, translated to about 6Mbps for download outside peak times but dropped to below 1 Mbps in peak (around 500Kbps and sometimes even lower!) – these measurements were taken regularly with both the TalkTalk and Think Broadband speed tests which were usually roughly in agreement and I haven’t had to rely on memory as I downloaded the spreadsheet records available to Think Broadband registered users.
I am now posting this in the hope that somebody can explain the difference between the BT Broadband Speed Checker (Here) and all the others available on the web.
When you are first connected to BT Broadband they warn you that your speeds will vary over the first ten days while they test your line to ascertain optimum speeds for it.  During that time, I checked it every day early, mid-day and evening (usually around 0630, 1230 & 2000 hrs) with Think Broadband and, yes, it did vary – the first day it started at around 1Mbps for download but rose to 10Mbps by the end of the day. On the second day, it rose to a peak of 17.8Mbps which was unbelievably fast to use (well, to me anyway) but never reached that speed again as over the rest of the ‘test period’, the download speed dropped and dropped to the point where I am now outside of the BT test period and consistently seeing only 2 to 2.5Mbps over a 24 hour period.
I emphasise that those speeds were all recorded using Think Broadband but I am now doing tests using the BT checker mentioned above and the speeds which BT indicate for downloads are consistently in the 14 to 18 Mbps range.  If I do the BT and TB test in quick succession, they generally show the BT calculated speed to be better than that of TB by a factor of around 7 (ie.  TB at 2 Mbps whilst BT show 14Mbps).  Now either they are measuring different things (or the sams things differently) or one of them is lying – all I know is that my general browsing experience is slower outside of peak times and I can tell by the time it takes to load pages.
I might have misunderstood something in these tests but I am now beginning to regret that I fell I for the BT sales pitch which promised me ‘up to’ 20 Mbps but ‘more likely’ 17 Mbps.   I have tried to discuss thisl with BT Broadband technical support but they were no use whatsoever – indeed, I got the impression that he was reading from a script and as it didn’t cover my issue, I was wasting my time – it would also have helped for English to be his first language!
According to the BT test, I am well within their ‘minimum guaranteed access speed’ (Here).  for my area (about 4Mbps) and therefore cannot do anything about it.  BUT that is only when measured using the BT speed tester – with any other, I am well below.  I am beginning to feel very conned and might even start looking to withdraw from BT if I cannot get this settled.
Can anybody help.  I will happily post detailed records of my various tests or router stats if they will help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Slow Broadband Speed

    Hello Whom May Consent
I have just found out that I am not the only one have problem with BT broadband speed. Many people seem to have problem with their slow Internet speed due to the exchange problem. That’s good, because after 10 calls to BT, I still don’t know what the problem with my broadband. So let me tell you what the problem is.
My Internet speed suddenly got very slow (0.4mb) since the morning of 05/11/2010. I thought this was just temporary problem with the Internet speed and nothing should be worry about. The next day, I still face the same Internet speed (0.4mb) which is ridiculous when you pay 25 pound per month. Therefore I took action and made a call to BT customer service. I am sure I dial the right number to an “ENGLISH” company and somehow the line goes to INDIA. Strange~~~
The guy on the phone question me 10mins to check my identity and ask me lots of stupid question like have you try to connect your computer with wire instead of wireless or have you try to change the filter for my Internet connection etc. In the end, the India guys on the phone told me after 24hours my connection should back on the normal speed (5mb). Guess what, it didn't’t.
Clearly I was very angry and made a call back to “India” again to find out that was the problem with my Internet. This time the India guy on the phone seems to know the problem and very helpful. He told me that there was engineering work by my area on the “BT Infinity” which slows my broadband down and this work should be done by Friday 12/11/2010. The India guy even made a promise that he will call me back on Saturday morning 13/11/2010 to check the Internet speed.
Guess what, the India guy let me down. Not just he breaks his promise that he didn't’t call, my Internet speed is still 0.4mb. I was so frustrated at this point and made the call to BT for the third time. I went through the same procedure (10mins of ID check) and this time India guy told me there is a problem with my local exchanger and will get the engineer to fix it. Again, he promised me that he will solve the problem within 24hours.
Sadly the problem is still unsolved. I called BT again. The India woman on the phone told me this time she need to send an engineer to my house on Tuesday on 16/10/2010. At this point I was so angry that I said something very bad to the India woman (I am sorry) but still agree to wait for the engineer to come to my house all morning (missed all lectures).
Long story short, engineer comes and nothing has changed and today 20/11/2010, the engineer comes again to try and solve the problem with my Internet speed. What all his done is change my telephone filter and nothing has changed. Internet speed is still is still 0.4mb. I have been told by the India guy on the phone after the engineer visit that my line is been investigated by the engineers and the engineer will call me tomorrow 21/11/2010.
I just hope this time the problem can be solved otherwise I will cancelled the BT broadband and get my money back for this month’s broadband usages.
PS if they charge me any money for the engineer visit, I will make sure who ever pickups my complain call to feel suffer

  • Variable Broadband speeds

We have been with BT for several months and our broadband speed has been variable throughout that time.  We were with Plusnet for several years before that and had the same problem there.  I always thought it was just something that we had to put up with but my teenage son has convinced me that we should try to improve it, so I am hoping someone here can help us.
We have a BT Home Hub 4.  I plugged a new filter directly into the master socket test socket yesterday - which temporarily improved the speed.  We have an extension but nothing is plugged in there at the moment.  I have done the quiet line test and it is quiet.  I've checked our exchange and there are no reported problems with it.

    Solved!

John46: yes I've already done the quiet line test and it was fine. (Although our phone line is intermittently so crackly that I find it difficult sometimes to hear what people are saying.  Apparently the people at the other end don't hear the crackles - just us.  Next time the crackles return I will do the quiet line test again if you think that would be useful?)
imjolly: the fact that we had a speed briefly of 5.7mb and now it is down to 2.66mb is exactly the problem I'm trying to solve.
While sitting at the computer this evening thinking about responding to you I watched the HH light turn from blue to orange and back to blue again.  I've just had a look at the Hub stats and seen the following:
    17:43:00, 24 Apr.
(93897.570000) DSL noise margin: 17.00 dB upstream, 7.00 dB downstream
    17:43:00, 24 Apr.
(93897.500000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 768 Kbps downstream
Just tried to access the speedtest and the HH light glowed green, then flashed green, then went blue, then flashed orange and is now blue again.  All in under 5 minutes.  Now the stats are:
    18:33:14, 24 Apr.
( 62.120000) DSL noise margin: 24.00 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
    18:33:14, 24 Apr.
( 61.960000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 6432 Kbps downstream

So, as I originally said - our broadband speed is variable!  Can anything be done to keep it at a high connection speed?

  • Broadband Speeds Have Dropped

Over the last few days our broadband speeds have dropped from 14mbps to now only getting 3.5mbps, this has happened after the technical staff told us they had fiixed a fault on our line. We are using a BT home hub 2.0

  • Incredibly Slow broadband Speed

Hi, I'm servering from a Incredibly Slow broadband Speed and can't nail the reason why.
The broadband for my street was down for a whole weekend although box said connection was ok - helpline was no help - just said try again tomorrow. Now we have internet but the speed is very very slow - speed test results are :
    Download = 53 kps
    acceptable range = 100-250 kps
    DSL Connection Rate 486 Kps (Down-Stream), 712 kps(Up-Stream)
IP Profile for line = 135 kps
    Upload = 541 Kps
    Addition Hub Info:
    Noise Margin (Down/Up) = 8.5 dB / 6.7 dB
    Line Attenuation (Down/Up) = 63.8 dB / 35.8 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) = 1.3 dBm / 1.1dBm
Prior to loss of service, my speeds although weren't great were about 1.2 Mps
I've tried all the suggestions like changing channels, filters etc and nothings change in my house since the degrading of service.
    Can someone please help !
    Best regards

I don't know if this will help, but I do notice that your output power is only 1.3dBm / 1.1dBm.  can I ask you to look on the back of your home Hub and check to see if it is a Type A or Type B, this will be on the label in the bottom right corner.  If it is a type B Hub then ring and ask for a Type A Hub as I have found that I get a better output power reading of around 16.0dBm.  When I was sent out a relacement Hub when mine went wrong they sent out a Type B and my speed went very slow, so I put the original Type A  Hub back on to see if it made a differance and my speed increased and my IP Profile went up.  So if this is the case, ring up tech support and don't ask tell them that you wont a Type A replacement Hub.  All the best in your efforts and don't forget that the more you insist the more you can achieve.

The BT speedchecker says 600-7150 kps is acceptable but I'm not getting anything like that now.  The latest test page said there were no problems! I am reluctant to speak to the Overseas Technical Dept as it took me 5 months to get connected to broadband with much stress and an eventual complaint to Ofcom as there was a problem with the wiring at the exchange, which I kept telling them.  My router is new and working fine. I suspect the wiring may need tweaking again.  I don't want to start taking my PC apart!
All I want is for an engineer to check the wiring at the exchange round the corner but how and who do I get to organise that?
Any help would be gratefully received!

  • Broadband speed through the floor

    Hello All
Since last Tuesday my Broadband speed has been killed. I was consistently getting arounf 16Mbps (ADSL2) but since last Tuesday it has been averaging less than 1Mbps.
I have been in contact with BT Customer Care, and, in their defence, they have been quite good once I got past the offshore call centre.
Here is what they have done:
    - Replaced my trusty BT Voyager 200V with a new Home Hub 3
    - Initiated a line reset.
They said the line reset would complete by Friday the 23rd but so far I have seen no improvement. My router is showing the correct line speed as quoted by BT, (Details from the Home Hub copied in below).
You'll notice the line has only been up for 10 minutes. About 20 minutes ago the line dropped and I lost broadband and voice.
So I guess I have a couple of questions if anyone can help me please?
    - What does a line reset do
    - When would I expect to see an improvement?
Like I say, BT have been quite good about it I just would have expected an improvement by now if it was a line reset that was required.
Nothing has changed in my home equipment wise, except swapping the Voyager out for the Home Hub. I'm not using the Home Hub for wireless as I use an Apple Time Capsule. Locally, the wireless network is fine so it is definately something happening past the router, (as far as I understand anyway!).
Thanks in advance  for any advice!
    - D
    [EDIT]
I should add that when I used http://speedtester.bt.com this afternoon my download speed was recorded at 750kbps and upload was 1.09Mbps so I could upload quicker than download!!
    [EDIT 2]
I have just run http://speedtester.bt.com again and here are the results:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.51 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 18.1 Mbps
Looking on this forum it seems the IP profile for the line could be the key but as you can see mine seems OK, (I think!)

  • Unlimited broadband speed VERY slow (less than 25k...

When we first got setup around 6 weeks ago the broadband was fine but we had some noise on the phone line which we was told would settle down. - it did then got progressively worse and eventually the phone stopped working all together while the bt router continually lost connection to the broadband. After chasing BT for over 2 weeks we finally had an engineer out who found the phone line problem (previous engineer pinched two wires together causing it to burn out and short the circuit). we was told the broadband speed should pick back up after 3 or 4 days....today has been 5 days and doing a speedtest reveals my download speed to be (on average) 22kb/s with an upload speed of 15kb/s. Web pages take FOREVER to load and anything beyond text you may aswell give up waiting for. Just 6 weeks ago when shiny and new we was getting over 9mb/s - nothing changed internally the setup is all the same just the phone line issue.
Is there ANYTHING i can do to speed this process up? I'm quite put off after the experience i have had with BT services so far and the support have been hopeless.
Heres hoping someone has some ideas!

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you  run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Broadband speed gone, customer support claimed to ...

    Hello,
I have never had any problems with my broadband speeds before whilst being on bt. I can usually get speeds of 3-4mbps, and an upload speed of 0.2-0.3mbps.
About 15 days ago, my download speed just stopped working, and it is now running at a constant 0.1mbps, whilst my upload speed is staying the same. We rang bt the second this happened, and the lady on the line led us on a massive journey around our house, checking that the ADSL filters were all plugged in...since we've never had a problem before and nothing had changed, I thought this a little pointless but I checked anyway and they are all fine.
She then said that it was a problem with our exchange and it's currently being fixed. Should take up to 10 days. 10 long days later and the speeds haven't changed a bit, so we call again. And again we are led about checking filters, and at one point unscrewing a phone socket to check for a box of some sort? Anyhow, this ended up the same as last time, no change in speeds.
Then, we were told there was a problem with our profile, and that he had fixed it and it would be back to its normal speed in 4 hours. 3 days later and it hasn't worked.
When connecting to my router, the ADSL claims it has a downstream of around 4000kbps, and that's what I should be getting, but I'm not. I've tried connecting to the router via ethernet and it made no difference. I've also moved it onto different sockets using different filters.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Eddy

your profile is probably low due to either the router resetting on it's own or you trying to reset in the hope it will sort itself or both
in order to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1)
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? from whay you said you do have extension sockets in other rooms in your home
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem
