Broadband speed very slow (again)

My broadband speed has been very slow for the past week or so, very hard to stream videos, download etc. Broadband download speed is normally around 7-8mbps mark and has been around 1-2 or lower this past week.
Speed test..
ADSL stats (I think a housemate must have reset the router 2 days ago)..
There are no problems reported at my local exchange.
I already had this same problem in January. It was fixed for a while but now it is really slow again.. https://community.bt.com/t5/ADSL-Copper-Broadband-Speed/Speed-way-way-down-on-normal/td-p/1149716

this is not the same as last time.. last time your speed was down at about 2mb wheras this time you have 11mb connection.
can you run btspeedtester again with wired connection and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results

  • Unlimited broadband speed VERY slow (less than 25k...

When we first got setup around 6 weeks ago the broadband was fine but we had some noise on the phone line which we was told would settle down. - it did then got progressively worse and eventually the phone stopped working all together while the bt router continually lost connection to the broadband. After chasing BT for over 2 weeks we finally had an engineer out who found the phone line problem (previous engineer pinched two wires together causing it to burn out and short the circuit). we was told the broadband speed should pick back up after 3 or 4 days....today has been 5 days and doing a speedtest reveals my download speed to be (on average) 22kb/s with an upload speed of 15kb/s. Web pages take FOREVER to load and anything beyond text you may aswell give up waiting for. Just 6 weeks ago when shiny and new we was getting over 9mb/s - nothing changed internally the setup is all the same just the phone line issue.
Is there ANYTHING i can do to speed this process up? I'm quite put off after the experience i have had with BT services so far and the support have been hopeless.
Heres hoping someone has some ideas!

I'm currently getting around half my broadband speed. I normally download at 140-160kb/s but for the last few days I've been getting 80kb/s max. The modems been on for a few days and it's still like this, and there are no problems in my area. Can you see any problems ?

  • IOS7 wifi and LTE speed very slow.

iOS7 wifi and LTE speed very slow compared to iOS6.  This was proven with Safari and using speed test app.

I have exactly the same problem symptom ever since installing iOS7. Toggling the FaceTime or the LTE settings alleviated the problem until I installed the latest version on IOS (7.0.4- 11B554a). Now the bug is permanent, a Network Reset will not work anymore, a System Reset will work only for the first execution of Speedtest.
Looks like the network software is throttling LTE speed to the minimum (.50 Mbps) up/download speed no matter what. Now unlimited Data means nothing, maybe AT&T wants me to go to Verizon or Tmobile.
I reported this problem to AT&T Sept 26 when I first installed IOS7, they told me there was no problem really that I needed to wait for the LTE network congestion to go away...? Since I found a circumvention by toggling LTE I did not pursued the problem...
After reporting the problem again this morning, they sent me to the AT&T store to change the SIM card.... I will try this and report back if it fixes the problem... Although I doubt it will fix anything but burn and extra hour of my day. The AT&T rep said that if the new SIM card doesn't fix the problem I need to go to Apple for them to give me a new Iphone....???? I guess there are many iPhones gone bad after installing IOS7 (sarcasm).
If you have this same problem, please post here so that I am able to get back to AT&T with some leverage to get them to remove the choking of LTE. Basically, if everyone accepts the new low speeds, then, unlimited data is no longer a problem for this phone company.

  • Upgraded to iMac - broadband now very slow

I'm hoping someone can help me here, as I'm really stuck on what the problem could be. I've recently upgraded from a Mac Mini to a 2008 20 Inch 2.4 GHz iMac. They were both on Snow Leopard, the upgrade went well and I used migration assistant to transfer across my files and settings.
Then I noticed that my broadband speed seemed slow. I thought this was probably just an ISP glitch, but today it was slow enough that I bothered to check more thoroughly - and it turns out it's the iMac that's slow. A broadband speed check I ran on my MacBook (1.83 GHz Core duo, so theoretically a slower machine in general) gave a result of over 10 Mbps. The iMac could only manage 1 Mbps. That's a tenfold difference! A check on iStumblr - again, with the machines right next to each other - shows a 10% difference in signal.
It's clearly not my wi-fi, or distance from the router (I have a full signal on the Airport icon, and I ran the speed test with my MacBook literally right next to my iMac). Could it be some settings that the iMac inherited from the Mac Mini, or does the iMac just basically have lousy wifi?
My office is too far from my router to realistically use a wired connection, so I'd really like to get this sorted if I can. Thanks for any help!

I've recently been having the same problem on my iMac as well. My MacBook Pro is testing much higher as far as broadband speeds. At one point, my iMac was running slower than dial up. I found that restarting temporarily improves speed, but lag often recurs. I have deleted the folder as described in the previous post and changed the channel on my router which has seemed to help. I was just wondering if anyone has any insight as to what might be going on with my iMac.

  • BT Broadband suddenly very slow on Mac OS X 10.5.8

    Hello,
I'm posting on behalf of my dad as his broadband is now so slow as to be almost unusable. He lives in the Suffolk countryside but should still be able to receive broadband speeds of up to at least 1.5mb/s on his local exchange. His BT broadband service has never been brilliant but has recently slowed right down. He has an iMac 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.5.8. He has tried upgrading to a BT Home 3.0 router but this has not improved his broadband speed. I have tried to run the BT speedtester but I can't get it to work because it says Java is not installed despite it appearing to be enabled as a plugin. I have tried this in both Safari and Firefox. I have asked him to try the speedtester available on the uSwitch website which has recorded a download speed of only 0.2 and upload of 0.1mb/s.  I would be very greatful if anyone has any suggestions as I am going to visit him tomorrow. I intend to try plugging the hub directly into the main socket via a microfilter. I also plan to try upgrading his operating system to snow leopard but I doubt that this will improve his connection. The quality of the phone line seems to have decreased recently too.  Is my only option to try ringing BT customer services?
    Thank-you!

    Hello,
Have upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.3 and now able to run BT speedtester:
    Also here are hub stats:
    Ran Uswitch speed tester again:
This suggests that we should be able to get up to 2.5Mb on this exchange.
Have tried quiet line test, line is not silent, there is low level interference on wire connected handset. Have tried connecting hub directly to master socket which has given a slight improvement in performance but still to my mind unacceptably slow. Could not repeat BT speedtest as limited to one test per hour. Ran Uswitch test again:
I know that he has just changed from Hub 2 to Hub 3 and it will take time to settle but broadband speed had already declined notably (to the point of being barely usable) on Hub2 before switching to Hub3.
    Any further advice gratefully received....

  • Dialup speed very slow

We live in a rural area where we can not yet get high speed (except Hughes...too expensive--Wild Blue sold out of bandwidth--no one close enough for wireless yet). My dialup worked fine on my Mac until I attempted to setup a mixed Mac/PC 'network' by just connecting the Mac to the PC via the respective ethernet cards using Cat5e (still have not gotten that to work-Help?). Anyway, after messing with the ethernet and dialup settings on the Mac, my dialup (no, I'm NOT sharing the dialup connectioin)on the Mac is now really, really slow. The speed on the PC is normal. The computers both have their own phone jacks. Anyone know why the internet speed on the Mac changed? I deleted the connection, created a new one and it worked noramlly for about an hour. Now going very slowly again.

Before I obtained broadband, I had three computers sharing a dial up connection. It worked, except for that speed thing. Here is what I did.
Get an Apple Airport Dual Ethernet Basestation (ABS) with modem. I did this back when the Dual Ethernet model came out, so you may have to use eBay to find one. I had a "Snow" model 802.11b made before the Extreme models with 802.11g came out. An Extreme with modem (did they make them that way? Think so, but only for a while) would work.
The advantage of the Apple ABS (with modem) is that you wire your computers or use WiFi as if you were using high speed. When or if you ever get broadband, you disconnect the modem wire and connect the DSL, cable, or satellite box. Make a change of configuration from your Mac and you done.
Back to the story. If both of your computers are wired, you have a problem in that the ABS only has one Ethernet port. This is OK if you can use wireless for the other computers. If not, you need to find a 4 or 8 port Ethernet switch to expand the one port you have on the ABS to many. I got one of these back then cheap ($20 or something). They are not as common now that all routers have multiple ports.
Since the computers don't all request pages at the same time, the setup works better than you might think.
Right now, you've likely got your Mac slightly confused as to where the Internet is coming from, hence it is slow. I've seen this and it can tough to correct.
    Hope this helps.
Now to confuse things. There might be a way to have the Mac use the modem to get the Internet and share the Internet with the PC over the Ethernet connection, but I've never done it.
    Good luck.

  • Broadband Always Very Slow

My broadband has always been very slow since we moved into our house 3 years agao. I had hoped it would improve through time but to no avail.
We are in a rural location which I am guessing is the problem but it is very frustrating. We cannot even stream audio files.
Is there anything we can do and I dont mean all the usual stuff we have tried all that and had a line spun to us from BT that they were doing things to help.

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
this may be the usual stuff again but in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?

  • Speed very slow for last 3 days or so.....121kbps ...

M speed is usually 1.5mb been down to about 300 the last few days and dipped now at 121 and just a measly 97 this morning....
done all the usual checks, and i noticed on a local internet forum last night that other is my area are suffering the same too with no explanation from BT
    (my daling code is 01595)
phoned BT...he said there were no faults it must be my end, repeated all the checks including the microfilter, he then said there WAS a problem with outtage and it would be 8 days before my speed was returned to normal....when i questioned this he explained it was cos of a powercut somewhere in the UK for 4 hours?????eh?
he then went on to quiz me if i had selected 1 when i phoned to leave feedback, when i said i had he seemed quite aggitated, quized me more about selecting to leave feedback and told me this effected his performance.
he then told me not to phone BT again for the next 10 days as this would confuse people and it would be an extra week on top of the 8 days i would have to wait for my normal broadband speed.
i am obviously totally disatisfied...i just want to know why my speed is slow and when it will return to normal
    anyone help.???

  • [SOLVED] Network speed very slow, no apparent reason

Hello, recently I switched from Windows 7 RC1 to Arch on my home machine (I have used Gentoo, Ubuntu, and Fedora 10 on the same machine in the past), and for some reason network speed is very slow.
I have Verizon's 20mbit/5mbit package, and I have always gotten that speed.
Using speedtest.net and 100mb.test from cachefly on multiple computers I have come to the conclusion that it is infact my Arch install that is causing the problem:
    - All other machines on my network are getting 20/5 (both wired and wireless)
    - I ran a speedtest from 2 other machines using the ethernet cable that this PC is on.  Again, full 20/5.
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from this PC -> other Arch box: ~2.8MB/s.
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from other Arch box -> this PC: ~2.8MB/s.
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from this PC -> UK VPS (100mbit line): ~539KB/s
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from UK VPS -> this PC: ~76KB/s
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from this PC -> Chicago Server (dual gbit lines): ~563KB/s
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from Chicago Server -> this PC: ~91KB/s
    speedtest.net result:
Upload speed seems to be unaffected.
I have tried disabling TCP window scaling, and appending my hostname to /etc/hosts.
What is weird though is that the other Arch box has an identical network config,  I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work.
My NIC is an integrated Realtek something, I can get the exact model if needed.

    Hi, whipsch
Can you try ethtool to see if your ethernet card is actually negociating and using a 100Mb full duplex link on your LAN ? If not you can try to force the link parameter with ethtool. Also maybe the driver of your NIc has options related to link negociation.
    Hope this helps,
    JF

  • Mac App Store download speed very slow...

I have been trying to download the App Store updates OS X Update 10.10.3 and OS X Yosemite Recovery Update to my iMac for the past several days.  When opening the Mac App Store, I click on updates and they appear.  However, when I select 'download' my download speed slows to the point of less than 1 MB per minute.
I seem to remember this happening when Yosemite was first released, but after a few days, I had no problem downloading Yosemite from the App Store.
This only occurs when trying to download from the Mac App Store.  When I download iOS App updates to iTunes I do not have the same problem so it seems to be only affecting the Mac App Store.
My internet speed is fine.  I can download fine from other websites, just not the Mac App Store.
After searching online, I found one solution that looked promising:
Finder->Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access->Preferences->Certificates->Certificate Revocation List- Changed from Best attempt to OFF.
Unfortunately for me this had no effect so I changed the setting back.
I then looked for a way I could download the files from outside the Mac App Store & found this:
       Apple - Support - Downloads
When downloading from Apple Support downloads page, my downloads were very fast.  The Yosemite 2 GB Combo update took about 15 minutes, a far cry from the App Store which would have taken hours.
Is there some setting I need to change to increase the download speed from the Mac App Store or is it just overloaded servers?  Why then can I download the files from the support page and not run into the same slow speeds?  Updating iTunes was also giving me very slow download speeds, so again, I went to the Apple Support Downloads & clicked the link to download the latest version of iTunes.  The file downloaded in about a minute.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Apple servers are overloaded. Instead of using App Store, use safari to download the updates manually from apple websites.
    Here's a link for OS X 10.10.2 Combo Update.
OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update
I had the same issue and downloaded manually from this link. It took me about 30-40 minutes. I'm using a 5mb connection. Your 40mb connection should be faster.
As for the iOS updates, you will have to download them from your iOS devices, because there are no standalone updates for iOS. Alternatively after you update your Mac, use iTunes to download iOS updates by connecting your iOS devices with your Mac. That should be faster than downloading through your iOS devices.

Speedtester refuses to test my speed saying there is an error at this time but using other speedtesters im only getting between 150-200kb download speed but getting my normal 902kb upload. Usually my speed is always about 9000-10000kb.
Is there a problem in the 0208 Essex area as two of my friends withing a mile away have the same broadband package as me also have the same speed problem??

  • Dailup speed very slow

Dialup isn't really fast enough for one computer much less another.
But you got to do what you got to do.
There is a raging malware for IE on PC's that's causing a lot of problems on the internet in the last few days.
