Broadband upto limits on package

Before I start I'm well aware of the use of 'up to' when speeds are advertised and am not asking for a rant about its use, that said however; a few Q's:
On my broadband package it states
Up to 40Mb download speed
Up to 2Mb upload speed
At the moment my exchange is 'up to 8Mb/s' - no problem there I get an average of 6.5Mb/s now.
The exchange is due for an upgrade iirc mid June 'up to 20Mb/s' (BT guess I'll get 11Mb/s)
There is no plan for Infinity to come anywhere near me to at least Mid 2012.
Now, having read some posts on here, some ppl seem to be being asked to renew their contract to get the increased speed after the upgrade. Is this BT's policy or are the sales team just trying it on?
As BTr operates a rolling contract, and supposedly informs you in advance of its renewal; can you just say no but remain with BTr on an 'out of contract' basis? I don't want to renew just on the basis of a guess of Infinty coming shortly after I'm due to finish my contract.
Finally, not any sort of major issue, but are BTr putting themselves into more problems with the regulators concerning 'upto' speeds by telling me I have 'upto 40MB' even though this is not a physical possibilty until 2012/13 (at best)?

Where do I look to see if I'm on an auto renewal or rolling monthly? Take it may be a chat to the billing ppl?

  • Broadband usage limits

    Hi guys,
I am not a happy bunny - previously had unlimited BB with AOL but BT sales advisor assured me that 10gb limit per month was a huge amount and more than enough for our family - he asked about downloading moviees (just occasionally) online wii games (rare) surfing (quite a lot) etc and said we would be fine.
One week into our BT contract we have used 2.5gb according to the monitor - I have no idea how since we haven't downloaded any movies or used online games. I found a website that asked me to put in my average surfing, downloading etc and it estimated we would use max 7gb per month.
Is it possible to get a breakdown of our BT usage? I can get itemised bills for mobiles and landlines so surely I should be able to get an idea of downloads/uploads etc?
    thanks for any help.

    Hi,
We have skype but rarely use it and haven't in the past month. My daughter does access facebook on her blackberry quite a lot but she gets that free in her blackberry deal. You tube - yes I watch the occasional news item that links through to Youtube.
I gather you can get a broadband usage summary from sky if you request it in writing. Are you saying that it's impossible to get any type of breakdown from BT? How can that be? Could you sell any other product and just expect the consumer to believe your estimate of how much they used? There has to be some way customers can query info they think incorrect?
In any event, after reading other replies it seems that what has actually happened is that we have been grossly misled by the BT sales guy we spoke to. (He also told us we could carry forward our old email address - which turned out not to be true either).
We got a promotional price for 6 months and when I called BT, the girl suggested we upgrade to 40gb and it would cost only about £5 per month more BUT she then said since we'd got a promotional deal on the 10gb we would lose that discount so our bb will increase from £13 to £22/23 per month.
I seem to recall that the terms included a 30-day period in which we could cancel so unfortunately that looks like the best course of action.  I don't want to have to worry all the time if we use iplayer or download a movie that we're going to exceed our limit - we are a family of 5 and all use internet, emails etc.
*When I told the BT girl I spoke with about this that I wanted to make a complaint because we'd been misled, she said there is no complaints dept as such and best she could offer would be to put me through to her manager. That didn't sound good either - there must be a customer service dept that deals with issues like this.
Finally, if someone could tell me how to access the home hub settings to check on usage that would be great.
I downloaded a program some time back called Netlimiter that was supposed to give you a running check on bb usage but it was a free version that doesn't seem to work on my machine.
thanks again everyone for the help.

We're about 1.5 mls from the exchange in a straight line, and rough guess around 100mtr's from the cabinet. Line runs off a pole to our roof, where there's a junction box outside, enters the loft with 1mtr of flat cable, then junction box to 10mtrs of Cat5 twisted pair to the master socket - Not BT socket but is a MASTER. cables loop in/out terminals 3-5 (ring wire removed) the loop out then feeds a second socket around 8mtrs away. Router achieves same speeds etc at both points.
History: Broadband has always seemed to offer a speed of around 2.6MB/s as best when tested on the Intel speed test in the past, worst is possibly around 2.2MB/s. We're currently having fibre installed in our village, our cabinet is yet to be fitted.
About 15 days ago the phone line had sound like a scrunching crisp packet, and also steady static noise. BT were called who sent an openreach tech out around 3 days later. He identified and fixed a line break around 60m from the property, but also mentioned it might be an intermittent fault as the ringtone disappeared during his visit? however mentioned he was unable to check the pole, external roof and loft connections given the access.
He did also discover that the static noise on the line was only present with the router: Home hub 3 connected - you could also hear the odd noise the router makes down the phone when initializing. He tried a different filter and also the cable between the router and filter was changed, both making no difference he advised that we should report the router to BT. He left with the line being clear (with the router not connected), however mentioned he was unable to check the pole or the roof connections given the access.
So.. Phone line clear for voice calls, but broad band speed was: line speed 3.5MB but only 0.45MB at the device
BT 150 Broadband support were called who've supplied a new router - this didn't make any difference. Tech team 2 got involved who reset the line - apparently the fault? put a cap on the line. With this being done, the sync speed was 5.125MB/s and 4.6MB/s at the device (results off BT speed test) and I was advised that they'd monitor the line for 3 days as it 'learned'. Latency was also changed from Interleaved to Fast.
Checking the router info during this time showed figures as shown in the chart above, although the downstream was 4-5ish MB and the noise margin was 3.5db, FEC, CRC errors were much higher.
From that, the download speed has gradually dropped to where we are now.. and I'm talking to BT stage 1 again who are asking about filters etc, and completely oblivious to any past events on our line??
I'm not sure what to do, if anyone has any help it would be much appreciated, as explaining the above to someone who has only the ability to diagnose fault off flowchart each time is very time consuming! Many thanks

Hi, thanks for your reply, please see comments
is there still noise on quiet line test  dial 17070 option 2  should be quiet and best with corded phone. When a test is done with a corded phone there is a 'just' audible steady static sound to the line. It's not silent essentially.
do you have a test socket you can use? No. Our master socket is non BT but does have the capacitor? barrel behind the plate. The engineer ran all his tests through this, and as I remember found some issue at the cabinet, whch was fixed.
your connection time is only 4hrs is that due to manual reset or router dropping connection?  your noise margin is high at 12.9db as normal is about 6db sugegsting line noise and or drops in connection. It will have dropped. I think the best connection managed over the last week or more is just over 1 day without a drop.
can you run btspeedtester and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results
    0.49mbps Down
    0.00mbps Up
    43.13 Ping Latency

  • Adding broadband to an existing package – is it po...

A phone call from BT prompted me to look into adding broadband to my home phone line.
The helpful sales person insists that the only way to do this is to take out a long contract, 12 or 18 months, and to accept a "free" router.
The reason for the request is that my main broadband line is rubbish late at night, when I want to use the BBC iPlayer.
I do not want another router. (I have plenty of network gear lying around.) I do not want a long contract.
As the regulator is clamping down on over long contracts, you would think that BT might be happy just to charge me a monthly fee on top of my phone bill.
Is this possible? Or do I have to look at alternative broadband suppliers?

There are not many providers that offer a 30 day broadband contract
Most will provide a contract for 12 or 18 months and what is the harm in getting a free router, you don't need to use it, but keep it in case of problems and to help in diagnostics.
I don't use the HH3, but a D-Link Dir 825, but the HH3 is sat next to the D-Link but powered off, ready to take over if ever have problems and need to do further diagnostics

  • Basic broadband package off-peak?

Hello all, a relative of mine has the basic £10/month home broadband package and has asked me if i could find out if this package has an off-peak time that provides unlimited download bandwidth? If so, between which hours provide said off-peak times?
Thank you for your time and patience.

No, the basic package is limited 24/7. If you want unlimited your relative would need to upgrade the broadband to an unlimited package.

  • How many upto 20meg packages have been sold

Hey guy's was wondering (this is 4 forum users not mods) how many of us have been sold upto 20 meg packages that's still only have upto 8meg annex a pack's it be cool to get a better figure as I have read a lot of forum's as well as bt and ever 1 still seems to be on annex a when standard upto 20 is norm annex m ???? So a estamate number wood be awesome to no

I think you'll find it is the way it works. Up to 8meg is DSL modulation standard G992.1 or G.DMT as it's sometimes known.
Lots of exchanges have been upgraded. If you've not yet, then it may be a case of waiting for them to migrate all lines across to the 21CN MSANS. If you've been sold a package of up to 20meg, please post your hub stats to show the current modulation type. If you're not on G.992.3 or G.993.5 you're not on ADSL2(+) and I'd suggest contacting the mods to see what's what.

  • How can I cancel my BT broadband package without p...

I ordered my 'unlimited broadband+free weekend call' package. It was supposed to work ~10 days ago. Now it still doesn't work after frustrating contact to the **bleep** phone service. So I'd rather quit the service.
What I was told is that I have to pay for around 310 pounds for that (my contract is 18 month). I totally understood that one should pay some money if he cease the contract before the fixed time. But for my case, it was because BT couldn't offer their service, then I chose to quit. How should I pay for this money? Who should pay for the time I have waisted on the **bleep** service?

It becomes muddier as the OP appears to have also ordered a phone package as well which should have been activated - the broadband presumably quickly followed albeit not working.
The OP could argue that although the service may have been activated the non performance of the broadband could void the contract assuming there was no operative connection - for anybody (except BT) knows it could have been ok for an hour then failed.

  • Broadband cancellation?

Hi there, I recently got the BT Broadband, TV and calls package for £17.99 (around 5 days ago now). However while I'm happy with the TV and calls, I'm not satisfied with the broadband. How can I go about cancelling the broadband? Surely it's within my rights to cancel it without incurring any fees, since I've not even had the package a week yet?
From paragraph 2 of the "Your agreement with BT Payment Services Limited" section under Terms & Conditions:
You have a statutory right to cancel your agreement with BT Payment Services Limited ("BTPS"). That cancellation right will expire fourteen calendar days beginning on the day after you make your first payment
    Thank you.

    walkerx wrote:
if BT aren't supplying the service as stated then the OP can leave without any charges
I agree but OP must be receiving at least a 2mb connection to make BT Vision work so I think that is enough to satisfy the up to 8mb or 20mb claim that broadband is being provided

    Hi.
The monitor is available for all account types, and is actually particularly useful for those on the limited allowance packages.
If your inlaws are unable to see the usage monitor via the typical method, you may like to point them at my shortcuts - options 14d-14g, hopefully one will work for them.

Because I have limited internet package on my att iphone 5, I update apps on my computer thru ITunes and then sync them to my phone.  The downloads seems to go thru and then install.  But when I turn on my phone, the affected apps continue to say they are updating and it never goes away.  I do not have wifi but when I am connected, the apps don't update.  Help!!!!

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • What phones can you still get the $15/month for limited data plan?

I am aware Verizon has switched over to the "Share Everything" plan. I think it's obsurd to charge $50 a month for only 1GB of data to share with the whole family. Anybody who pays for that, must be insane. But, that's not what I'm asking about.              I have talked to my local Verizon store and they said I can keep my plan if I just want to upgrade my phone. There are 3 other phones on my plan, by the way. I have a basic Samsung Rogue that has unlimited texting and a shared amount of minutes for phone calls. I asked about changing my phone to a smart phone and they said I could have the $45/month plan, or whatever it was, for unlimited everything. That was just a little bit more than what I was willing to spend. I considered switching carriers and decided against it, as Verizon seems to have the best coverage. Then, it occured to me that they used to offer a limited data plan that my sister had before she got unlimited. I thought it was about $15 on top of what I already pay, but I'm not for sure. So, since I am still on my old plan, would it be possible to add the limited data package to my plan?? Also, if that is possible, what phones have an option to have a data plan? Can it just be any smart phone? I would prefer a touch screen phone.
All answers are appreciated. Thank you!!

Yes it is true. when you add a line you are required to change to the share everything plan.
<Moderator comment. This information is incorrect. Current customer are not required to switch to the Share Everything Plan if the customer deals with a corporate store or VZW directly through Customer Service.<
